This "hero" needs to die. Seriously. This guy was a lazy, unambitious, stupid, womanizing asshole who used the heroine for her money - which the motherfucker spends on his cougar Italian mistress and on his other women. This guy has a gold medal in the vagina diving olympics. This novel triggered one of my biggest issues, which is infidelity. The "hero" was a whiny little bastard who hated his father but jumped to do whatever the mean old man ordered him to do. This was one hero who deserved to be cuckholded and then dumped. He needed a taste of his own medicine but the heroine had far too much self respect to lower herself to his below the pavement level. This guy is technically a gigolo because he sleeps with the heroine only when daddy forces him to do it to conceive the precious mother f*****g heir - by threatening to withhold money. What a pussy of a man ! I hated how his primary purpose for the heroine was as an incubator.

The heroine was a lovely, kind and wonderful American heiress whose title hunting family thought they would buy some social status by marrying her off to the asshole H. This poor woman brought a huge dowry to the marriage but was forced to stay at her husband's oldest and most poorly maintained estate. I am surprised the heroine wasn't tempted to do like those 19th century women on the popular true crime tv series and give that bastard a steady diet of arsenic in his tea and soup. Or get him drunk and suffocate him with a pillow. There was no CSI then to pin the blame for his death on her. I HATED THIS GUY WITH A PASSION. HE WAS A NASTY PIECE OF WORK. And he acted like a scared pussy when his cougar mistress turned her leeching ass up at the home he shared with his wife. Some things are just unforgivable. I don't care that he eventually changed. It was too late in my opinion. He needed to die just for having the bad taste to go dumpster diving in that nasty OW's hole of hell. Cheating is bad enough but cheating with such a skank is a worse insult to his pretty and classy wife.

Just a quick note: At the sentence level, Her Errant Earl wasn't terrible. But I think the story was lacking about 100 pages of character development.

Honestly, the main characters and their motivations remained a mystery to me. There just weren't enough meaningful scenes for me to understand what drove their actions or reactions. One day they were saying, feeling, and doing one thing, and the next, they had done a 180° about-face with very little explanation.

By my own 'every author gets a 2nd chance' rule, I'll eventually be moving on to book 2 of this series . . . unless any of my dear GR friends have a better suggestion when it comes to this author's work. :D I'm open to suggestions! <3

Not a fan. Does this series improve???

The premise of Her Errant Earl was promising. You’ve got an earl who only married out of obligation, after which, he immediately ditches his wife and goes on a salacious booty bender throughout London society. He returns to his wife months later needing her help and the wife wants NOTHING to do with him.

description

This was set up to give good angst. I expected that the wife would rebuke her terrible husband’s advances at every turn and the husband would unwittingly fall for his wife as he tries to make up for past awful actions. Instead, you get a doormat heroine who suffers from the incurable traitorous body syndrome and is doing the dirty deed with her husband by Chapter 2 (or something around that).

description

Not only did Victoria NOT make Will grovel, she barely made him apologize. He slept with EVERYONE and she just blew it off as no big deal. Making it even worse, Will didn’t even do anything to make her fall for him when he returns. He throws her some bread crumbs of attention. Basically, the heroine is so starved for attention she was satisfied to take any scrap of affection or disingenuous compliment thrown her way and had zero self-reflection as to why she was so content to settle.

There are a lot of teasers in this book (TBI resulting in almost amnesia, the return of a scorned mistress and a-hole duke), but none of it materializes to anything worth reading.

The cover of the book was pretty, though. And it’s free on KU.

One of them whiplash-giving about-turn/redemption stories that abound these days.
And every sin is supposed to be in the past and done by 'his old self'. All the ass-hattery, cheating, falsehoods lie in the past (hazy but not very distant) and now suddenly he finds her attractive, sexy, intelligent, appealing and un-leavable when she was plain and imminently forgettable before and he couldn't dump her fast enough.

Her Errant Earl is the first book in the Wicked Husbands Series which are smutty historical reads with husbands being assholes, then seeing the light. This is Will and Victoria’s story. Will (an Earl) is the only child of the Duke of Pembroke. He was raised in a negligent/abusive household and HATES his father. He rebels by trying to embarrass/disobey his dad by basically being an irresponsible manwhore. Victoria is a rich American heiress from a title seeking family. The dynamic isn’t unique… she thinks he loves her, but he's being forced into the marriage for her money and unfairly resents her. So, he dumps her in the country after the consummation to chase skirts in London. The book opens with Will being forced home by the Duke's orders or being cut off finacially.

If you read a lot of historical romance this is fairly standard, but if you prefer to have zero cheating in your romance… I’d skip. I didn’t find Will overly cruel. Personally, I found him more manchild than alphahole. I didn’t hate him though. I felt the author did a good job of making his transformation/maturing believable. Victoria is strong and pretty likable. She offered the love and support he needed without being a pushover.

Bottom Line- This is a quick, easy read that I found entertaining, but all his bad behaviors occur before the book starts, he doesn’t love another, and the reconciliation takes place in the country away from the ton, so I didn’t find it angsty at all. Good not great. It’s free on KU, and there’s a short epilogue one year out.

Safety- Will’s abuse is only mentioned (flogging, neglected, etc.,) but his puppy is killed (for sneezing on his mom's dress) and left in his bed Godfather style within the first chapter. It isn’t graphic but FYI if animal violence is a trigger.... FYI.

Will is with numerous women during the 5-mth separation after he abandoned Victoria in the country. No scenes are on-page and there’s only one quick scene with an ex-mistress. He rejects her & defends Victoria... but FYI.

4.5 Gilded Age ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such a good time. Asshole married angel for money. Does more assholery, and angel (Victoria) is slowly growing up before our eyes. CAN YOU FEEL THE ANGST!

Will is forced into the marriage by his evil father the Duke. He is consumed by bitterness and self pity, and leaves his American bride in the country. He is off to London and forgets about her, for 5 months.

When the Duke (Daddy dearest) says he will cut him off financially if he doesn’t provide an heir, he comes back to Victoria to save the marriage. (Get heirs so he can get $)
Albeit for all the wrong reasons.

They actually both start to fall in love as soon as they meet (the second time) and it’s so beautifully done. You feel his betrayal and both of their grievances and pain.

Will is very seductive 🌶️ and he sets out to seduce her from the get go. I did not feel it was body betrayal, it was literally seduction, and a lot of writers could learn from that distinction. I mean I can’t write at all😁 however this was well done, because he was ever so charming.

The American heiress plot was fun, you could really feel how lonely and isolated Victoria was. Yet she had the backbone to set boundaries, not rigid ones, but realistic ones. She had agency, a little more than her British peers.

Will did have a mistress while in London and Victoria definitely struggles with forgiveness, as she should.

However cheating is a large part of the plot, and it is done very well. You might not end up loving him, but you will end up forgiving him.
The self loathing and his low self esteem is evident and it was actually nice to see him grow as a human being. Victoria is a naive girl to begin with, but she is strong. And there is grovel!

Hear me out, I realize cheating is bad, and it is avoided like the plague in books atm. But it does provide big feelings.
This story isn’t about the cheating, it’s about growing and forgiveness and becoming someone you can stand, when you look at yourself in the mirror. It also provides a lot of feels and drama, which is something, I as a reader absolutely love.❤️

So why not 5 ⭐️, well because his past was explained a little rushed. Also her abandonment in the country, was not quite detailed enough. But it was close🙌

Should you read it? YES! This was my first book by this author and and already downloaded 3 more.

Ps. This is how you write an epilogue!

Hmmm, difficult to review as this is one of those books that you would love to hate as a reader. I rated it high because it was a goldmine for the therapist in me!

The Plot
William, the Earl of Pembroke, courted, wedded, bedded and promptly abandoned his American heiress wife Victoria. After spending 5 months in London behaving as if he is still a single rake, he is back in the country trying to play husband! Fighting, cajoling, seducing, more fighting, mistrust, conversation, sex, accident, love, misunderstanding, sex, fighting, leaving, grovelling and happily ever after.

My Thoughts
- The plot was predictably straightforward, there wasn't a lot of guesswork involved as to what would happen next? But damn if it did not keep me glued to my phone for a couple of hours.
- Scarlett Scott really knows how to keep a reader engrossed even if it is through a mini-novel. Her writing style is excellent and engaging.
- The story was a rollercoaster of emotions that went up and down and all of it incalculably, especially when you felt you were settling into a flow of things.
- The characters were interesting in a way that, as a reader, I had to keep amending my opinions about them as the book progressed, it speaks volumes about the author, not letting the readers jump to conclusions, predictability of the plot notwithstanding.
- A tale of opposites attract, the relationship between Will & Victoria was constantly evolving at an alarming rate but since it was a mini-novel, I have no complaints about the pacing.
- There were conflicting emotions aplenty and left me a little confused at times as to how did I exactly feel about the situation unfolding as I read, maybe a few lines of clarity would have helped.

Trigger Warings
- Separation period of 5 months
- Abandonment
- Cheating, plenty of it (nothing descriptive)
- Parental negligence
- Parental abuse (emotional & physical)
- Killing a puppy, who the fuck is that bloodthirsty?

The Hero
Ah, William was a psychologist's dream! The prologue quickly and quite horrifically outlined the life he must have had as the ignored and despised ducal heir. No wonder he is incapable of trust & honesty and understandably, whenever he found himself in a position of power he is going to exert it. Unfortunately, a victim of the aforementioned power struggle was Victoria. But come on man, there is something called a conscience. His actions were reprehensible at the beginning, I found myself plotting his not so sad demise. But his character development was built up effectively inciting just a teensy bit of pity & sympathy from me. But I would not be as forgiving as Victoria was and I still maintain - NOT ENOUGH GROVELLING! William was a hero, difficult to digest.

The Heroine
Victoria was, the best way to describe her would be, naive. Poor thing was caught so unawares about anything regarding the man she married, his family or his situation, she was swinging like a pendulum between trust & mistrust. There were times when I was indignant and physically aching on her behalf and then there were times when I wanted to kick her. It felt she was happy on scraps of affection at times, other times she felt like a smart cookie, attracting flies with more honey than vinegar, confusing the crap out of Will who had no clue how to deal with emotional intimacy. I understand very well why William fell for her but still have no clue as to how the hell did she fall for him well before his personal growth kicked in and he started with honesty.

My Recommendation
For a tiny book, I sure did write a lot. But this is one of those stories that will inspire a reaction - you may love or hate it but you cannot ignore it. Bottom line is, all I am looking for is a story that manages to keep my interest and this one sure did. Please read the trigger warning before you decide to read this book. If you are okay with them, you may end up enjoying it, as I did.

Safety warnings attached at end.

Victoria fell in love with Will, only to find it was all a charade for him. He beds and abandons her for months in the country. Then when he returns he expects her to forgive him and act like nothing has happened.

Give this book a try if you like
-Steamy! Multiple explicit scenes and there were so many kisses and touches throughout the book
-No villain or mystery or murders! The hero is rather the villain here haha
-Arranged marriage – Will's father decides on the bride and Will is forced to carry out his wishes or disinherit.
-American heiress marries an English peer
-I put this under experienced heroine because her virginity is gone when the book takes place and you don't witness that, but I she's definitely not 'experienced'
-A bit of second chance/enemies to lovers – they are married and the heroine sees the hero's true colors. The book pick up months later with that animosity already established
-An irredeemable hero – many probably hate him, but gosh I love a jerk hero sometimes. Though he's not really a jerk on page, its implied past actions.
-A GROVEL – this hero has a lot of make up for and he begs forgiveness

I loved this book!! I kept hearing Scarlett Scott is steamy. I read a lot of ARCs and they are so hit or miss for me and some are closed door and I'm not prepared for it so this was totally what I needed. There's so many kisses and touches in this book. It feels consistent, sprinkled throughout the story. These characters are together throughout the book, there's no long separations on page.

I enjoyed the Victoria. She's got a soft spot for her husband but still draws the line at his hurtful behavior. She's kind and understanding, yet feisty and holds her own. She's in utter turmoil by his confusing behavior. And I don't blame her. Because Will can be devastatingly charming. I cannot say I wouldn't fall under his onslaught of tender touches and words.

Will has a hurtful past that has made his goal in life to torture his father, the duke and disobey every decision he can. He hasn't cared about anyone's feelings but himself. He's selfish, uncaring...I don't know why those are my favorite heroes. :P The duke threatens him and he has to go back to Victoria and she doesn't make it easier for him. He has to earn her trust and love again.

I loved so much about this book. I loved the angst, the heartbreak. I loved all the little touches. I loved the hero finding and baring his heart. I would preferred a tad more character development, and I did think the heroine gave in just a bit too easy in a few situations. Still, very happy with this book, I plan on reading another one soon.

Her Errant Earl is one of the worse written Victorian Romances I have every read. There is virtually No storyline. We don't even know Victoria's the Heroines full name nor do we know the lead males full name. Will is all we know and he is Earl of Pembroke. Heir to a duchy which we know very little about.

Will is a real Dog of a husband. I know this series is call Wicked Husbands but Will is worse then Wicked he is a Dog. He leaves his American Heiress after consummating there marriage for 5 months. Will goes and install one of his mistress's in his townhouse in London. But he has more then one mistress. He left the dumb American heiress in his run down and crumbling estate. While him and his mistress live the High Life off her money in London. Until his father the Duke or whoever he really is. There is not much written about him. He orders Will go back to his wife and produce and heir or no more of Victoria's fortune for him. The Duke controls Victoria fortune. Really how stupid is Will? Everyone in this story is dumb!!

What a Load of Bull Crap!! Victoria should have left this Dog of a Bastard and gone home to America. What Will did to her is unforgivable. I wish Victoria had more guts and integrity. She is poorly written. Well the whole story is poorly written.

I am Grateful I got this Free on Kindle Unlimited!! It's not worth you time to even read. What a Waste. I have heard that books 3 and 4 are better but 2 is just as bad as bk.1

This book lacked depth, especially in the characters. It did not take long to read and I skimmed some - tropes are angsty but this one lacked any. There is backstory and when H returns, most of the re-connection occurs in a couple of days. h is hurt and angry but the H just turns her on and she "takes him back" almost immediately although her attitude is a little distant for a few days. The one scene with the ex caused a ripple, but not as much as it should because the h is ultimately very understanding. The H's motivation for all is cold and cruel parent and Daddy issues. While H abandoned h after the wedding and consummation, she was able to restore a crumbling estate in 5 months because, although young but American, she is very capable.

Will was so horrible right from the start. He married Victoria - consummated the marriage and fled to London, where he had plenty of women in his bed. When he eventually goes back home, he expects Victoria to carry on as if nothing happened, but she obviously doesn't want anything to do with him. Victoria tries to hold out, but eventually falls in love with Will. I won't spoil the ending! 4☆

This series keeps popping up, and honestly I had next to no memory of the story. I’m not sure why it was originally included in my ‘How bad can it be?’ tour. It’s well, written, and rather engaging.

Hes a disingenuous swine for a good chunk of the story, his conscience does kick in, but he doesn’t own up to his behavior. It inevitably blows up in his face.

ETA… he’s not that wicked, he’s used self indulgence as a way to passive aggressively fight with his father.

All things considered the original 3 stars is generous and review stands.

I’m on a how bad can it be kick... this one wasn’t horrible. After about 50%, the disingenuous, slime ball hero became more tolerable. The heroine was likable enough, but kept falling for his swarminess, she was smarter than that. Off to read book 2...

DNF @ 66%

The story deals with a marriage of convenience between the hero and his American heroine. There is some forced drama of him being under the thumb of his dad and needed to beget an heir. Nothing unusual here or anything handled with a particularly deft touch.

I found the premise dull compared to the second book, Her Lovestruck Lord, which promised more drama. However, I made the mistake of picking this up as I am a series-completionist (not sure that is a word - but should be).

66% in, I couldn't take it anymore. The book is quite dull and the last "twist" gave me enough of headache that I decided to bail.

There is something about the writing here which doesn't work for me. Everything feels a little superficial and thin; when combined with the standard plot there is not much here to be invested in. Too many "traitorous heart" being "set aflame" in "ashen-faced" characters. Basically there were too many of the typical historical lines one after the other that I felt bored.

I don't think I will continue in the series... just think this author is likely not for me.

I did end up reading this a while ago, as it was KU. So I thought what the heck.
It was totally unsatisfying romance-wise but excruciatingly entertaining in a 'watching trainwreck' fashion.

The thing I remember bothering me most, was that he let his mistress live in his London townhouse.
How long will it take to erase that memory in the hea?

Totally unsafe until he travels to his country estate to beget an heir. But he still lies to her about most everything, even if he keeps 'it' in his pants. I do wonder about how safe/clean 'it' is though.

Scarlett Scott has grabbed me with many of her stories, and I’ve been meaning to read Her Errant Earl for quite some time. Although this was a quick read that had me hooked, I did not love it in the way I have loved other books by the author.

There was plenty packed into Her Errant Earl, ensuring the book keeps you turning the pages, but I never fell in love with the characters. In fact, I really disliked our male lead. There were a couple of things that he said that came close to changing my mind, but these lines were not enough. Nevertheless, it was addictive and I could not put it down.

Although not my favourite Scarlett Scott story, this one kept me hooked and made for a great quick read.

Victoria and Will. I liked this story. Will is a villain hero who leaves Victoria in his country estate after marrying her for her money. He leaves after having sex with her on the first day of their honeymoon. So she is no longer an innocent miss. He then goes to London spends a ton of money on other women and spending her money on fancy living. The story is steamy, but not satisfying steam because even though the prologue wants the reader to pity him he is a jerk. This hero uses sex and his good looks to get his way and this heroine summits too easy. I wanted the heroine to grow a back bone after flaunting other women and living with his mistress openly for part of the five months of their marriage, I would have preferred the heroine make him grovel and earn his way in the sack.
The hero also comes back into her life after 5 months and immediately tries to have sex with her because his father wants him to have an heir. IMMEDIATELY-he arrives in her bed and expects to have sex. Not because he loves her-he does not yet, but because he ran out of her money and his father is demanding a heir. (He keeps the heir part a secret). I was upset that she accepted him back into her bed and life so easily especially since he was away those five months she knew via the tabloids that he had sex with Lady Lady Lonsdale, The Duchess of Eastwick, Mrs. St Hillaire, Countess of Ardmore, lady Northclyffe, Lady Shillington, Lillie Longwood, and his mistress Maria.
Thanks heavens they have a nice hea that saves the story for me.

This book was quite boring. There was no angst at all, the story was predictable: right from the beginning we are being told Will is coming back to Victoria because he needs an heir. She is mad because he left her for 5 months so he has to pretend, charm and seduce her in order to gain access to her bed again. So we easily guess that this hidden motive is going to break them at some points (not even the other woman could spice things up: she came and left!)

Other than that, nothing interesting happened: Victoria was aloof, haugthy and cold to him, then he said 2 or 3 words, touch her and she melts. I understand how confused he felt one morning at breakfast, because I couldn't stand her to be honest. Warm then cold then wondering why he won't look at her... really Vicky?

He wasn't great either. A professional cheater who spent months in bed with several women and only put an end to his immorality to produce an heir. Depraved and proud apparently!!

A fast angst-fest (in the best way) steamy hot read, I enjoyed the high heat level and all the drama! Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a nearly irredeemable hero, lots of feels, and a good groveling, and this book definitely delivered.

Oh man, this was kind of painful for me. I don't like to give single stars, but this was awful. It was shallow, the characters were nincompoops (I don't think I've ever said that about book characters before, but it feels apt), and hardly anything at all happens. Lots of inconsistencies, the depth of a paperclip, it was just all around poorly crafted. The intimate scenes were decent I guess? I can't think of any other aspect that was actually. I have the second book on audio already from the library, so maybe I'll still try that one, (sped up doubletime so it's less of an investment), I like to give authors more than one shot, but honestly I'm quite hesitant. -- Nope, I just read the blurb and a few reviews on the other one and it sounds very, very, similar. Maybe I would have ended up giving IT a whole *2* stars, but life is short and there are a lot of other books out there, I'm cutting line.

I want to be fair since this is the first time I’ve read a book by this author. First, I like her writing style. Second, the book was well organized. The story itself was consistent. The editing was good. These are the reasons why I gave it three stars. However, the story itself ….eh. The problem is the hero is the dog of all dogs. I mean “ick.” If there were venereal disease during that time, Pembroke would have caught them all. Gross. A hero like that isn’t something a romance fan would swoon over or cheer for. The heroine….I wanted to like her….I tried. I understand she didn’t have a lot of experience turning men down for sex; I understand that Pembroke was her first love, but geez. Talk about a push over. I kept yelling at my Kindle, “Run like hell!” “Sell furniture in the house if you must for money, but leave!” Whew. And don’t get me started on the father. I’m willing to read another book by this author down the road because her writing style is good, but this particular plot; the main characters’ flaws were too much.

Thought I'd try a new author. Never again. Horrible whiny couple. He's a cheating, self centered, lazy daddy's boy and she's a spineless tstl heroine who knows what he is and still gets "wet" everytime he looks at her. Terrible unrealistic plot. A dnf at 50%.

Didn't feel the love.

Pembrook forced to marry and have an heir.
But once married to Victoria he send her to the country and skip around sleeping around.

But he has to have an heir or be disowned.

Back with his wife he must woo her. But she's mad and playing hard to get.

Just okay.. No awe moment in their relationship.
