Empathy and Eyebrows: A Survivalist's Stories on Reviving Your Spirit After Soul-Crushing Sh*tstorms

Rate this book
Between her time as a radio host, television figure, and social media personality, Danni Starr has never been afraid of sharing her opinion. In this book, she takes you on a whirlwind tour of her own life and beyond, with plenty of personal perspective and #BlackGirlMagic to go around.

From her struggles with workplace discrimination to the wild Rumspringa of her post-divorce months, from postpartum depression to the joys of friendship, Danni tells her story with honesty, humor, and moxie to spare. Despite its lows, life has given her plenty of joys—good friends, an empathetic gift, lovely daughters, and a great pair of eyebrows. They’re unorthodox weapons to be sure, but with them she’s faced down everything that’s been thrown at her and forged a wicked set of survival skills in the process!

Let Danni take you on an entertaining, enlightening, and engaging tour through her life. All you need to join is some empathy—and, with any luck, the brows to match.

This book was raw, real, vulnerable, empowering and beautiful. A collection of essays describing vignettes through her life, some had me laughing, some made my throat close with tears, and some made me angry. Finding out how Kane finally got what he wanted and the dirty way he went about it. I know he did not hold on to that and then play it like an Ace card after the shit I heard come out of his mouth ON THE AIR over the years. I don't often say things happen for a reason, but I'm glad Danni is where she is. Her shine will never be dimmed and her ability to speak across racial and gender lines makes her a unique-corn. Get it? 😁🦄 So glad I got the opportunity to hear this in her own voice and look forward to more from her.

I'm a Danni Starr fan, and have been anticipating the release of this book. It did not disappoint! The book is a collection of essays Danni wrote about her life. I relate to her so much. The section near the end about her Grandpa had me in tears, it was like she was describing my grandfather and the loving relationship he & I shared. Keep being you, Danni, and thank you for this book.

Danni's story makes it worth reading the book. However, I had greater expectations. I am not saying that the book is bad, but it did not match my expectations.
I have first heard part of her story in a podcast hosted by Nora Mcinerny and because of that I wanted to read the book. I think Danni is a better talker than writer - hope she will get offended by this, as this is not my intention.

Love!

I read this book in one day. Danni bears her soul about love, laughter, loss, and everything in between. But this book is not written to gain sympathy, but rather is meant to empower. Great messages about being a badass woman on the daily. Highly recommend.

Fave lines
Life is a constant evolution of things, of thoughts, beliefs, love and friendships.

Things I've said I would never do, I've done. People I thought I couldn't live without are no longer in my life.

Quick read that had me both laughing and crying. If you’ve been a fan of Danni’s on the radio, you know the audiobook sounds like she’s sitting next to you wanting to chat.

I just got this book yesterday personally from Danni Starr. I'm not a book person but I can't seem to put this one down. Emotional uplifting type of book I needed to read.

As a long-time listener, I was able to discern what Danni was referring to in many of her stories. I chose to read the book to get to know her a little better but reading it as a "newbie" I wouldn't be able to piece together a good picture of who Danni Starr really is.
The essays would have made more sense if they were placed in chronological order... or any type of order. They would have seemed more cohesive instead of a jumble of thoughts. Great thoughts, but jumbled nonetheless.

This book is awesome!!!!! I “met” Danni Starr on the radio no listened to her every morning on my way to work and she made my day!!!!! I wished my weekends away because I couldn’t wait to hear her stories and BGM on my way to work. She is as real as they come and when I found out why I wasn’t hearing her come through my speakers anymore I immediately saved a different radio station in the #1 spot on my radio preset. I quit following the other DJs on that channel and have not missed it at all. So thankful I got this book (Danni even wrote a message to me inside the cover) and I get to see her on Instagram and her Podcast. If you haven’t read this book, please read it. It helped me after I got divorced after 20 years of marriage and I reread it whenever I need a “push” out of my depression.

Relatable and Raw

I didn’t know what to expect when I began reading Danni’s book. I loved that she took us on her journey and I didn’t even realize how much I needed this book in my life. It is the most relatable book I’ve read in a long time. I highly recommend.

I grew up listening to her on Hot 99.5 and she was always my favorite. At the time It saddened me to know that she had left my favorite radio station (but now I literally feel hurt knowing my favorite people on the radio that i still listen to til this day treated her so badly. Looks like Fam in the Morning with Danni will be the only station that I listen to on my drive to work).

I read this for book club and definitely wouldn't have finished it otherwise.

I did like the chapter where she spilled the tea about the Kane Show, because I remember when all that went down and also always thought Kane was kind of an asshole. Other than that, though, Danni's worldview is just very different to mine. Other than a commitment to social justice, I don't think we have that much in common, so I didn't get a lot out of this.

quick read. topics of each chapter jump around a lot. the book as a whole doesn't really have a flow. but there are some good stories/life lessons/ advice sprinkled throughout the book.

This was a very raw and honest book. There was good advice that came across in real world applications without sounding like a self help book. It was eye opening to see so many cases of racism that she has to face in every day life and how see she has to teach her daughters. It was very easy to read and enjoyable while also learning about hard lessons and life changing advice. She seems to be a very down to earth woman, who tells it as it is.
