SHE NEEDS A CRYSTAL BALL. INSTEAD SHE GETS A CAT.

After losing her fiancé, friends, and job, Wendy Fairmont moves back to her hometown to lick her wounds and start over. But when she discovers the man next door may have been murdered, she’s sucked into an investigation that isn’t making her too popular with the new neighbors.

Soon she encounters a former classmate who’s transformed from nearly invisible to totally irresistible, making it difficult to stay focused on setting up her new photography business. Not only that, but her old school nemesis is now married to the small town’s sheriff, and she’s determined to make Wendy’s life miserable. All this, as well as a stray cat channeling the spirit of her grandmother, makes Wendy’s fresh start more like a dead end.

Will she be able to return to her former life, or will old demons resurface to destroy her future?

Negative Exposure is the first book in the Killer Shots Mysteries. Part Gilmore Girls and part Nancy Drew, this series has plenty of snarky humor, quirky characters and intriguing mystery to keep readers coming back for more.

A new to me series and author to start off the year, and I have to say, I'm so glad I started this series! I was drawn to these characters immediately and since I found that I do have the other two books, I'll be reading them hopefully soon.

I love the author's style and sense of humor! The dialogue between the two nemeses, Wendy and Sherry, was priceless. And when Wendy took down the killer in an exciting showdown, well that was really cool too! I hadn't guessed who the killer was thanks to some great red herrings. This was definitely a great Saturday entertainment book!

I enjoyed the story enough. I love mystery books, and cozy mysteries have a special place in my heart, add to that the setting of small town. Wendy back to down to move into her grandmother house, on the day of a funeral of her neighbor.
We progress to the suspicion he was murder and whodunit it?
Different characters with their own quirkiness, some with motives and some are just delightful.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wendy Fairmont is moving into her grandmother’s house that she’s just inherited in her hometown. She’s leaving behind heartbreak, another business she sold to her assistant, and former friends who didn’t stand by her. She’s looking to start over by finally opening the photography studio she’s always wanted. She’s moving in on the day of Harold Attwood’s funeral. And there’s a car parked in her driveway that needs to be moved. When she knocks on Beverly Attwood’s door, she’s getting into more than just a house. She’s getting into secrets that people don’t want exposed and are willing to be quite nasty to keep covered up. She’s meeting some people for the first time and some people from her own past.

Dale opens the door. He’s Beverly Attwood’s son-in-law. He doesn’t want Wendy giving Beverly decor ideas because the house is for sale. She meets Curtis, her next-door-neighbor on the other side. He’s a banker. He blows hot and cold and Wendy isn’t sure what’s going on with him. His wife seems nice, though. Then there’s Jake Faro. He was a nerd in high school, but he doesn’t look like a nerd now. He’s super good looking and has great body. But he’s very secretive about what he does for a living. His sister, Nancy, is a real estate agent. She’s helping Wendy find a property for her photography studio. The two of them are going to be great friends. She’ll never be friends with Bert Crosby. He’s the president of the golf club. He’s rather arrogant and doesn’t let anyone else get a word in. He’s got secrets, too. And, of course, there’s Sheriff Grady. He’s married to Sherry. In high school, Sherry was Wendy’s nemesis and time hasn’t changed anything between them. So the sheriff isn’t looking kindly on Wendy. Beverly Attwood, the lovely widow, really likes Wendy, but every time the two of them spend any time together someone starts another story and Wendy gets in more trouble or something happens and someone else gets hurt.

And there’s Cricket. A gray cat that is a neighborhood stray until she moves in with Wendy. She does things with Wendy she hasn’t done with anyone else. Including seem to communicate with her in a way almost like her grandmother used to. Could Cricket be channeling her dead grandmother?

Wendy was a fun character who seemed to be reactive rather than proactive. She sort of seemed to go with the flow rather than mapping out her own moves. I understand that she was licking her wounds from the recent break up and betrayal of friends. But this is a young woman who is going to be starting her new business in her hometown. Get moved in and get that business going should be her first piece of business. She’s messing around with all sorts of things like the gym and funeral parties and the neighbors. And dinner with old school friends. That would be Jake of course. And taking photos in other people’s homes. There’s just something about cozies that strike me as removed from the real world. They are written loosely, for lack of a better word. They don’t quite relate to real life or reality. You just don’t go into someone’s home and snap photos without getting their permission!

Jake was another interesting character. One that I’m not sure I completely understand. I’m sure we’ll be seeing him in future books as well. Jake had a total crush on Wendy in high school. Nancy, his sister, told us all about that. He was a nerd back then. But now he’s former FBI. Former because of an injury that required a hip replacement that got him a desk job. Now he’s not working for the FBI anymore. He’s working some sort of computer monitored security, but I didn’t understand it totally. Not sure it was explained totally. But he’s got the town wired it seems. And he’s still sweet on Wendy and willing to give the relationship another shot, but not rush into anything.

I really liked Nancy, too. That’s Jake’s sister, the real estate agent in town. She and Wendy hit it off really well. They seem willing to tell each other everything, no matter what secrets are involved. They seem headed towards being BFFs. Looks like there’s a good basis for a series here. A photog, real estate agent and a security guy in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Might be worth a second look. Book #2, Freeze Frame, was just released last week. It’s available in ebook and paperback.

Honestly, I feel generous with this rating. It was more a 2-star read in a lot of ways but since some of the stuff I didn’t like was more personal vs the actual writing I rounded up. Wendy Fairmont moves back to Cascade New Mexico after dumping her rich fiancé (losing all her friends in the process somehow) and selling her business and somehow Small Town NM has learned of the break up (and see it as a shame for some reason) and I’m not sure who told anyone as Wendy is moving into her recently deceased grandmother’s home and doesn’t really know anyone in her old home town any more (Maybe her semi-estranged parents and brother blabbed about it? We don’t know the drama there, but it’s hinted at)

Her move-in is blocked by the after-funeral gathering next door. She learns, her neighbor, Beverly has lost her golf-fanatic husband. To Wendy’s chagrin, the eccentric Beverly seems to embrace this as a new strange out from under his thumb and wants Wendy to do a photoshoot of her. (This is going to be Wendy’s new vocation, photographer). In the process Wendy learns a) that Beverly’s daughter and son in law are trying to have her declared non compos mentis so they can get her house and sell it and b) there appears to be blood stains all over the floor.

So that’s probably number one for me. Is Sheriff Grady so incompetent that a death from head injuries wasn’t investigated at all and who pulled the carpeting over the blood stains? Wendy isn’t interested in solving the mystery at first, more interested in keeping Beverly from being railroaded by her son in law. She also meets up with a few people she knew in High School: Jake, who had a crush on her and has gone from nerd to hot cyber security man, Jake’s sister Nancy who is her realtor and Sherry, mean girl from high school now Grady’s wife.

And that’s problem number two. We don’t know Wendy and Sherry’s past beefs with each other (especially since Wendy was a beauty queen and not another nerd being bullied) Sherry is definitely a bully and super catty but both of them act like they’re still fourteen to the point that a) Nancy calls Wendy on it and b) they were actually knocking each other down and flinging stuff at each other to get to the spinning bikes in a public gym. What thirty-year-old woman does that?

Far too much of this was given over to the childish, unexplained rivalry between the two women. It got to the point that Sheriff Grady was actually threatening her, and Jake based on things his wife had said and if I hadn’t been seventy percent through this I would have DNFed it. I won’t read cozies where the amateur sleuth is up against a sheriff/detective who actively doesn’t want them there (because let’s be honest, they could easily just arrest them for interfering with a police investigation). But weirdly enough, just a chapter or two later, he’s fine with her being there and she goes from ‘he’s an idiot’ to ‘it should be left in his hands’ with no explanation.

It wasn’t horrible but I’m not sure I’d read more of this. Wendy is far too immature for me. If you want to act like you’re still in high school, I have no way of connecting with you. And now for a minor spoiler (so look away if you don’t want to see)

Wendy and Jake know that Dale, Beverly’s son in law has faked evidence that she’s got dementia, so he can steal her house and that she might be in danger, it’s never followed up other than maybe the sheriff sent a guy to her daughter’s house where she is now. It’s like the author forgot to tie that up a bit.

I really enjoyed this book. I have listened to a few of the author's other books from the Maycroft Mysteries series and thought I would give this series ago to. Glad I did because it has everything you could want from a good cozy mystery - funny situations, a love able cat, romantic interest, intrigue, paranormal help, plenty of suspects, a hopeless detective and a great cast of characters. I liked the characters who were interesting but down to earth and like able, the kind of people that you might have living next door. The mystery was well worked and kept you guessing. I have already downloaded the next audio book in the series, I enjoyed it that much.
The last thing Wendy wants or needs as she arrives with the removal van at her new house is to find a funeral going on next door and a car blocking her driveway. Not dressed for the occasion or ready to meet her new neighbours she never the less rings the door bell and is sucked into the crazy world of a small town village. The man of the house died in the den but rather than morn his death his wife is worrying about redecorating or having her photo taken, the son in law is eager to sell the house and his best friend can't help but take digs at him during his eulogy. But was his death really the accident it seems? When Wendy discovers blood no where near the supposed accident site, she has to ask herself who she can trust? Her gran's old friend and the murder man's wife or the hunky neighbour next door that know a little bit to much about what goes.on in the neighbourhood? A missing golf club points the police in one direction but Wendy is determined to find out what really happened.
I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job with bringing the story a characters to life.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

'Negative Exposure' is funny, entertaining, and at times surprising - in a word, a good cozy mystery you'll likely choose to relax after a hard day's work. It's quite fast-paced, though the pace sometimes slows down a bit when the 'social' part takes over the 'criminal' side of the story. but both are equally well executed. There are enough twists in the plot and red herrings to satisfy your 'criminal mind' and enough quirky type of humour to make the social relationships between Wendy and all the people around her interesting to follow. Wendy herself has the kind of personality that will make you like her a lot - a seemingly lively, energetic former beauty queen, with hints of great sufferings and mystery in the past, who is also still involved in old-time school rivalry...

Narration by Ms Krause is very good. She does quite nicely all the voices in the book without exaggerating the male ones. the pace of her reading is also good, and she relays all the emotions convincingly. I liked it a lot.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

Here, Wendy is moving back to her hometown after a breakup with her fiance and selling her business. On the day she is moving into her grandmother's old house, there is a car parked blocking her movers. Wendy believes the car belongs to someone attending her neighbor's funeral reception. Wendy gets to know her neighbor's widow and starts to wonder whether her neighbor wasn't murdered. Plenty of suspects from the widow to his banker to his son-in-law to his golf buddies. In the midst of her investigation, Wendy has decided to start her own photography business and is getting to know long lost acquaintances.

This is a very likeable cozy. Wendy's inner monologue is funny and filled with sarcasm that made this book all the more enjoyable. Another plus was Cricket, the cat who adopted Wendy and might be psychic.

I listened to this book -- the narrator, Karen Krause, did a really good job with Wendy's sarcastic tone and all of the quirky neighbors.

Negative Exposure, features Wendy Fairmont, a character from Lisa B. Thomas' Maycroft Mystery series. Wendy leaves Maycroft, Texas and heads back to Cascada, New Mexico when she inherits her grandmother's house. She is looking for a fresh start after the ups and downs of her life. Her first fiance died, she sold her event planner business, and then she broke up with her rich boyfriend. Now she wants to start a photography business, thus the catchy book title! When she gets back home, she discovers that her neighbor, Harold Attwood, died recently. As she gets reacquainted with the people from her past, she gets to know, Jake Faro, and his sister. My favorite line from this book is,
"Sometimes the world was just too peopley!" In this first book of the Killer Shots mysteries, Wendy proves that she makes a good amateur detective! I am looking forward to future installments of this series.

I think I’ve found a new favorite cozy mystery author. I was worried at first because the audio was only less than 5 hours but turns out, it was perfect. I couldn’t stop listening. I drive an hour one way to work. I would get there and keep sitting listening. I was late clocking in several times. This book had it all, along with humor and that all around feel good vibe. The main character was great. I really hated her nemesis but she made a great bad apple to hate. The whole book and world was written very well. The whole going home years later and seeing how people had changed and some things not so much, was a great set up. I absolutely love the cat and how grandma was channeled. I hope we find out more about that in the future. It was written just right as to make it even believable in real life. As far as narration, it would be hard to find anyone better for these books. I also had a hard time knowing who the killer was.

Wendy Fairmont returns to the town where she grew up after inheriting her grandmother's house. She is returning with her tail tucked between her legs after her fiance decided she wasn't good enough for his family's money.

On her moving in day, there is a memorial dinner next door, the elderly neighbors husband had recently died, and due to unusual circumstances, Wendy discovers the man was murdered. Due to the town sheriff's attitude, Wendy sets out to discover what really happened, and also to save the neighbors home from the clutches of her son-in-law.

This is the first story I've read from Lisa Thomas, it has engaging characters and a solid story line. I look forward to continuing this series.

This one was a lot of fun... it has mystery, murder, paranormal elements, comedy, and a light romance. Honestly, what more can you ask for? I don't want to give anything away so I will keep this short. Wendy is moving back to her home town and into her grandparent's home that she had just inherited after a pretty big breaking-up. Shortly after she arrives she finds herself caught up in a mystery of a potential murder and the story progresses from there in such a cute, quirky way that I had a hard time putting it down. I highly recommend to those who love a great funny cozy mystery. The narrator did a great job and was enjoyable to listen to.

A really nice cozy mystery

I liked it from page 1. A good vibe. Wendy already made an appearance in a couple of books in the Maycroft Mystery Series. She moves back to her home town only to find herself in trouble again.

I loved it! Well written, good flow, pleasant writing style, quirky characters, likeable main character, intriguing case. I didn’t know whodunit until the very end. It was also humorous! I loved the cat, Cricket. She adopts Wendy (and not the other way ‘round!). Wendy thinks her dead grandmother is talking to her through the cat. And I’m inclined to agree: the cat was very helpful!

I really enjoyed this cozy murder mystery by Lisa B Thomas. I had not expected some of the twists that occurred in this story. I found some aspects of the book to be realistic (starting over, competition with former rivals) while others not so much. The story has some great humor along with endearing characters. I really liked Wendy and her antics, and fell in love with Cricket. Karen Krause is a new narrator to me, and she performed this book great! I thought she fit the New Mexico dialect. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.

Wendy is starting over back in her hometown. That hometown is a very small town where everyone seems to know everything about everyone... except they really don’t. Even though a neighbors death was ruled accidental, things don’t seem right to Wendy...

Lisa B. Thomas has written a great cozy mystery! I loved the characters and I’m really looking forward to Wendy’s next adventure.

Karen Krause did a lovely job with the narration. I would not hesitate to listen to more of her narrations.

This book is really interesting once I get past the disturbing first chapter.

Wendy Fairmont moves back to her hometown to lick her wounds and start over. But when she discovers the man next door may have been murdered, she’s sucked into an investigation that isn’t making her too popular with the new neighbours.

Negative Exposure is the first book in the Killer Shots Mysteries. Part Gilmore Girls and part Nancy Drew, this series has plenty of snarky humor, quirky characters and intriguing mystery to keep readers coming back for more.

When things go terribly wrong for Wendy Fairmont's life she does what anyone would do.....move back to her hometown. But things aren't like they used to be. Her neighbor may have been murdered, her high school arch rival married the town sheriff and would love to make Wendy's life unbearable. The characters in this story are really developed. I love all the bantering between them and Wendy who will and does stand up for herself. Can't wait for the next story in this series.

Great book

When Wendy Fairmont moves back to her hometown she didn't expect to be caught up in her neighbor's trouble. As she tries to learn the truth about the situation she suspects the neighbors husband was murdered and not dead from an accidental fall. She meets new friends and reaquaints herself with old friends in this 1st book of what promises to be a good mystery series.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book.

A cute hometown cozy mystery as we follow this relatively fast paced shorter listen. Wendy is a well written character and the story is intriguing. I thought the author did a great job keeping things interesting in this first book of the series.

The narrator did an excellent job with voice differentiation and gave a perfect amount of emotion and energy throughout.

Positively Ready For More Exposure

All of the ingredients necessary to becoming the author of a new series, Lisa B. Thomas has created a series based on a character found in several earlier books. Characters with depth and secrets round out the first of many more Killer Shots Mysteries to come. (Please!) May I be a Hot Shot fan?

Real life is absurd. Sometimes that is good.

Real life is frequently absurd. Only a skillful novelist can write a story that is equally absurd and still believable. This book comes close. Okay I believe that things could happen this way, but it reads more like the way people remember events as a little larger than life. Still fun.

Lite reading. Good story

I don’t like books that are continued in the next book. By the time the new one comes out l’ve moved on. I don’t care what happens to the characters. I did like the story. It was a fast read and was interesting. A nice cozy story.
