Why did Paul frequently employ a diverse range of metaphors in his letters to the Corinthians? Was the choice of these metaphors a random act or a carefully crafted rhetorical strategy? Did the use of metaphors shape the worldview and behavior of the Christ-followers?
In this innovative work, Kar Yong Lim draws upon Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Social Identity Theory to answer these questions. Lim illustrates that Paul employs a cluster of metaphors--namely, sibling, familial, temple, and body metaphors--as cognitive tools that are central to how humans process information, construct reality, and shape group identity. Carefully chosen, these metaphors not only add colors to Paul's rhetorical strategy but also serve as a powerful tool of communication in shaping the thinking, governing the behavior, and constructing the social identity of the Corinthian Christ-followers.

Kar Yong Lim is Lecturer in New Testament Studies and Director of Postgraduate Studies at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia (Malaysia Theological Seminary), Seremban, Malaysia.
Lim has written an interesting book, loaded with helpful insights. First, he demonstrates that Paul's use of metaphor was not only linguistic, not only meant for rhetorical explanation, but that he used metaphor to actually shape the lives and behaviors of his audiences. Second, he relates Paul's use of metaphor to social identity theory, and demonstrates that Paul's use of metaphor helped to shape the boundaries of early church communities. And third, Lim takes these insights into an analysis of metaphor in 1 and 2 Corinthians, and shows how specific metaphors, such as family, body, and temple, were used to encourage certain behaviors and community structures.
I believe that Lim argued his case well, and that his use of metaphor theory and social identity theory was appropriate to the material and to his analysis of Paul's letters. I had just one critique. At points, Lim established discussions while leaving out some of the most important details. For example, in his discussion on family metaphors, he discusses these metaphors from a horizontal-community dynamic, including Paul-as-father, brothers and sisters, slaves, and children. However, he never discussed the God-as-father motif, or the concept of inheritance; both of which are found in the Corinthian letters, and both of which are vital to understanding the church-as-family metaphor.
Aside from some important missing elements, I found this book to be insightful and helpful. I'll be citing it in my own work.
