كتاب العقلانية والحرية، ترجمة شهرت محمود أمين العالم لكتاب Rationality and Freedom الذي ألفه أمارتيا كومار سِن. ويبحث الكتاب في الأفكار الأساسية المتصلة بمفهومي العقلانية والحرية وتبعاتهما على الأفراد والاختيار الاجتماعي. وعلى الرغم من أن هذين المفهومين يجدان وفرة من الاستخدامات في عمليات استكشاف الفلسفة السياسية والأخلاقية وفي السياسة العامة، فإن هذا الكتاب يُعنى تحديدًا بالاقتصاد ونظرية الاختيار الاجتماعي؛ كما يُعنى بسبر أغوار طبيعة المفاهيم البديلة لهذين المفهومين وسماتهما ومضامينهما، مع أن أحدهما غير منفصل عن الآخر، بحسب المؤلف.

About the author

Amartya Kumar Sen is an Indian economist who was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to welfare economics and social choice theory, and for his interest in the problems of society’s poorest members.

Sen was best known for his work on the causes of famine, which led to the development of practical solutions for preventing or limiting the effects of real or perceived shortages of food. He is currently the Thomas W. Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. He is also a senior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, where he previously served as Master from the years 1998 to 2004. He is the first Asian and the first Indian academic to head an Oxbridge college.

Amartya Sen's books have been translated into more than thirty languages. He is a trustee of Economists for Peace and Security. In 2006, Time magazine listed him under "60 years of Asian Heroes" and in 2010 included him in their "100 most influential persons in the world".

I have come across an interesting anecdote called Rational Fools:

" Consider an old story of a quarel between two children concerning two apples. Child 1 asks child 2 totake one of the two apples, and 2 immediately take the bigger of the two. Child 1 grumbles, You are so grabby. Given the first pick, I would have chosen the smaller apple. To this child 2 replies, So what are you grumbling about--you have got the one you would have chosen!
Reasons for choice do make a differenec---not just the fact of choice.

প্রথমেই বলি, বইটি আমার কাছে খানিকটা দুর্বোধ্য লেগেছে। অমর্ত্য সেনের অন্যান্য বই, খোদ অর্থনীতির জটিল বই ও প্রবন্ধগুলোও আমি খেটেখুটে গুগল করে অন্তত নিজের কাছে সন্তোষজনক বিচারে বুঝতে পেরেছি। কিন্তু সে তুলনায় এ বইটির পিছনে আমার শ্রম ও সময় অনেক বেশি লেগেছে। এ আমার নিজস্ব সীমাবদ্ধতাও হতে পারে।

‘কার্যকারণ ও স্বাধীনতা ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে যুক্ত’- আমার বিচারে, প্রায় ৮০০ পৃষ্ঠার এই বইটির মূলসুর এটিই। স্বাধীনতা যদি ব্যক্তির আকাঙ্ক্ষা হয়, তবে সেই আকাঙ্ক্ষার পিছনে কার্যকারণও থাকবে। যুক্তি নয়, কার্যকারণ- কেননা, অধ্যাপক সেন Logic নয় Reason কথাটি ব্যবহার করেছেন। আবার কার্যকারণের ক্ষেত্রে তিনি বলেছেন এটা freedom of choices এর ওপর নির্ভর করে। আমি ইংরেজিটাই লিখলাম কারণ বইয়ের বিষয় বিবেচনায় এর সঠিক বঙ্গানুবাদের সাহস আমার হয়নি। তবে দু ক্ষেত্রেই তিনি স্পষ্ট করে বলেছেন, এ ধারণাগুলো অর্থনীতিতে যেভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তা থেকে একেবারেই ভিন্ন। আর এখানে এসেই বইটি জটিল হয়েছে বলে আমি মনে করি।

অধ্যাপক সেন তাঁর সকল বইয়েই এমনকি কিছু কিছু প্রবন্ধেও বিষয়ের প্রয়োজনে অর্থনীতিশাস্ত্র থেকে দর্শনশাস্ত্রে মোড় নেন; কিন্তু এ বইটির ক্ষেত্রে তিনি নৌকো বেঁধেছেন অর্থনীতির ঘাটে কিন্তু ডুব দিয়েছেন দর্শনের নদীতে।

কষ্ট করে পড়ে ফেলতে পারলে আখেরে দুটো লাভ হবে। এক, এই বইয়ে অমর্ত্য সেন যে ধারণোগুলোর বিষয়ে মতামত জানিয়েছেন, তা অত্যন্ত শক্তিশালী যুক্তির উপরে দাঁড়ানো এবং ড. সেনের অন্যান্য বই বা বক্তৃতার তুলনায় ভিন্ন। দুই, স্বভাবজাত একাডেমিক ভাষার বাইরে এসে প্রবীণ অধ্যাপক এ বইয়ে তাঁর নিজস্ব একটি ভাষা তৈরি করেছেন। আমার ক্ষুদ্র জ্ঞানে মনে হয়েছে, ভাষাটির সাহিত্যশৈলী ও বাক-বিভূতি অনন্য।
