These two treatises deal with the issue of trials and tribulation, extremely essential for every Muslim especially in the times that we are living in today. People often see, and hear of, the believers being afflicted with adversity and tribulation, and conversely they often see, and hear of the disbelievers attaining leadership and wealth in this world. This leads them to mistakenly believe that well-being in this world is only reserved for the disbelievers.
A believer may face many trials and tribulations that test his faith, patience and endurance. In a world full of conflict and war, with many also suffering from personal and family problems, shaytan causes a person to question many things. If a Muslim is tried with a difficulty, then the reasons for this are many - including one's own sin, which arise from leaving something obligated in Islam or comitting an act that is prohibited.
Trials are also a means of Allaah purifying and aiding His servants, ennobling them and granting well-being through His Wisdom. The most severely of those who were tried were the Prophets and then those closest to them in following their guidance.
“Allāh, Glorious is He, knows everything, before its existence and after its existence, but He desires to witness them in reality, and know their faith being lived out.”
At first this book felt like a collection of verses organized under headings and I noticed that it was written for the kind of reader who is already familiar with some of the Islamic terminology (not included in the glossary at the end). Then, the powerful topic that this book covers and its profound wisdom offered by one of the greats of Islamic scholarship came to life...and I grew certain that I would need to re-read this again in the future inshallah.

Subhanallah! its an amaizing book... Our scholars have written such books of which we are in desperate need....today, in the times of Fitnah The astonishing thing is that this book was written thousands of years back... Subhanallah! I highly recommend this book to be read at least two times by a student of knowledge May Allah let us act accordingly Ameen
My rating is mainly due to the translation and the not-asked-for footnotes, that sometimes are way too creative in how they try to frame the imam's own writing.
ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah on combatting lusts and desires 🧵
“It is said, ‘Patience is that intellect and religion stand firm when faced with lusts and desires.’ The meaning of this is that human nature runs after that which it loves, but intellect and religion prevent it. As such the two are at continuous war with each other, and this war has its ups and downs. The battlefield is the heart, patience, courage and firmness.”
With these books I always have the trouble of not being able to understand much of the main part. But the two appendices in this book were great and very beneficial!
