Book Description Jake Weylin came home from Afghanistan a broken man. The former USMC scout sniper is lost between the dreamlike operas stuck forever in his head, and life in Anacostia, a hardscrabble Washington D.C. neighborhood. Some days he’s back in Kabul. Other times he’s lost in the land of the ‘brave and the free.’ He doesn’t know what he’s searching for until he locks eyes with the new nurse at the free clinic and thinks, ‘Do I know you?’ While in the Marines, Lacy Wright served by providing security to the international press corps in Afghanistan. Now she carries every image of the carnage she witnessed like a curse. To deal with the pain of all those hard memories, she commits the men and women she saw die to canvas. With a steady hand, she gives them a few last moments of life. She breathes on them and she talks to them. She calls it painting them home. Jake calls it crazy. He may be right.
Growing up in the countryside of Wisconsin, I always wanted to be a writer. I've dabbled in poetry, short stories, and more daydreaming than most. Way back when, I remember long Sunday afternoon drives with my parents where they'd tell us eight kids to, 'Look out the window and see something!'
I've been looking out the window ever since . . .
In the great Northwest pines, I saw a woman who had nowhere to run find refuge in the arms of a tender warrior seeking his own road to healing. In the hills of Wyoming, I saw a broken man who thought he'd lost everything rediscover the man he was in the eyes of a pretty girl. And in the Dairy State, (yes Wisconsin), I saw two people fall in love and overcome horrific obstacles on their way to happily-ever-after.
Life is short. Pick up a good book. Read. Write. Enjoy. Look out the window and see something!
Jake, Jamal and Lacy – I was hooked from the beginning. All of them lost and hiding from life. Jake isn’t sure where he belongs since leaving Afghanistan and the Marines. He searches out his Marine buddy Jamal and does his best to save Jamal from himself. Jake and Jamal meet Lacy at the clinic in the rough neighborhood of Anacostia where Jake is always taking Jamal to get patched up from his latest escapade. Lacy, a Marine herself, works at the clinic and is hiding from her privileged life and her parents who tried to have her committed. A life in which she no longer fits into nor does she want to. Jake, Jamal and Lacy become friends and their journey of trying to save each other begins. I don’t know how Ms. Winters does it but she draws the reader in from the first sentence and keeps you hooked with twists and turns throughout the book. Every book I read ends up becoming my favorite. Looking forward to #17!
The heroine has served and can tell the two friends who show up at her work are soldiers who are still serving and struggling to survive. She had things happen to her once she came back to the US, which didn’t help her with coping with what she had seen, and made her move away from her family because of it. However, the two men who seemed to show up know what she had gone through. She didn’t realize exactly what each of them was living with until she spends more time with them.
Our hero had physically come back from the war, but mentally he’s still there or flashes to their sometimes. He’s struggling and helping another one of his soldiers, who is also a friend, helps him too. They can’t stand living in a house because they find it too restricting, so they are homeless. However, the new nurse where he takes his friend makes him think he can do better, before he slips again.
The plot is a good one dealing with those who have served and what they deal with when they come back from serving. It’s also very good in how it deals with how they come up with ways to survive even in different positions. Add this to the complication of someone trying to take the entire neighbourhood they are currently living in and renew it into something to make money and you have another whole set of problems. This includes those killing healthcare workers and people who have gone to the clinic. What they didn’t realize was just how far our hero, heroine and friends would go to make sure evil was either killed or arrested.
This is the 16th from this series, and I liked how the author dealt with the return from serving in this one. I'm curious to see what the next book brings.
Irish Winters writes about hot, hunky, sometimes troubled heroes. In her intro to Jake, she warns us that Jakes does not fit the mold. He is one of those heroes who fought for us and lost part of himself in the process. Remember, don't choose a book by it's cover. Jake is much more than he appears at the beginning. He's always a hero. As we learn about this marine (not an ex-marine. A marine is always a marine) we see his protective nature is unchanged. He watches over his buddy who tries to find peace in the bottle. He watches over Lacy, the former Marine, now a nurse, at the free clinic and more people in the neighborhood. Circumstances put Jaamal and Jake in Lacy's apartment as she refuses to allow Jake's buddy to get lost in the system. At the same time, the neighborhood is being threatened by an evil man wanting to renovate it at the expense of all. When they find out there is more, we see Jake's metamorphosis. Can the three of them with limited resources take on a wealthy man with big connections? When danger hits home do they risk their lives? The feelings they finally acknowledge? This story touched my heart in the way few books have done. The raw emotions, the methods of dealing with their pain, the fears and nightmares, as well as the support shown, and the love between these broken heroes touched my heart. One of my favorites things about a series is checking in on the lives of those characters from earlier stories. In this case, there are a lot and a celebration brings many together. I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.
Those who are looking for a sweet romance, this book is not for you. This story is about LIFE, raw, ugly, mean, twisted, demonized…..but as Irish says…Love changes everything!
Behind every ex-Marine is a story he/she may not want to talk about. Life leads some down really rotten paths, through treacherous swamps, up really steep grades and across unmentionable deserts. Jake Weylin and Jamaal McCune, were 2 unlikely buddies you will ever see, but they were brothers just the same. They took care of each other and those they deemed “worthy”. Lacy Wright was “worthy”.
Lacy and Jake met over Jamaal, at the Free Clinic when he messed up…again, and needed to get some stitches. Lacy stunned Jake, she smiled at him, actually smiled AT HIM, and It stuck! Jake and Jamaal looked out for Lacy, and others that lived and worked in a seedy side of town, Anacostia. But something was going down, both men had been seeing people get hurt, bad hurt. Then they were both busted up. Now Marlee……was dead! Lacy was running for her LIFE! Jamaal was bad hurt, Where was Jake?
Emotion and adventure are the guides of this book. People you might never ever look at its heros! The path a winding twisted trail through lies, deceit, anguish and ultimately to Love! So I dare you! Its not an easy book to read…some of the events are horrific, but stay with it, its “worthy”!
Touching, intriguing and amazing. Are just a few words that come to mind after reading JAKE. No one, but those who have endured it, can understand the trauma of war. Some return the same, others come back different in ways we see ... and some we don't see. Jake is one with changes not seen easily.
When Lacey Wright was in the Marines she served as security for the press corps in Afghanistan, but the carnage she witnessed doesn't go away. Her only relief is to paint, calling those who died in the hot horror back home. Now a nurse at a free clinic, she meets a survivor and fate takes a hit on her heart.
JAKE is life that is real, painful and yet with moments of love, laughter and celebration. Irish Winters gives us a look at those who have fought for our freedoms and now fight their demons in any way they can. A friend of Jake's hits the bottle and that causes problems, because Jake is an always will be a Marine who looks after his buddies. Lacey has a few secrets, including a family that wants to “help” her but you will have to read this book to find out more.
If you are looking for an amazing read with a couple that truly deserve a happily ever after, people who will fight the good fight for each other, camaraderie at its best, funny moments, tearful moments and surprises then get your hands on JAKE, IN THE COMPANY OF SNIPERS right now.
JAKE...IN THE COMPANY OF SNIPERS...BOOK 16 Jake is not your usual hero. He is dirty, smelly and lives on the streets or sometimes in the basement of an abandoned IGA in one of the roughest sections of DC. He is an ex Marine who lost part of his company in an ambush in Afghanistan. He has taken on the role of protector in this rough neighborhood, protecting the few business owners that remain, his friend Jamal, an alcoholic, and secretly keeping watch over the pretty nurse who works at the Free Clinic and lives nearby. Lacey is also a former Marine. Each copes with their demons in a different way. Jake is often delusional and hallucinates but always the protector. Jamal copes with alcohol. Lacey turns to her paintings. The three take on a very wealthy and evil man who will stop at nothing to achieve his evil goals. With the help of the TEAM they succeed.
Ms. Winters has once again brought us a very emotional and spellbinding story. There are tears and laughter. If you like romance and nail-biting suspense, this is the book to read.
I received a copy of Jake, In the Company of Snipers, Book 16, in exchange for an honest review.
Emotionally my heart is full. This is not your typical book about military veterans becoming part of the sniper team run by Alex. They aren't in the jungle, or Ireland or the desert but the run down suburbs of DC. Veterans still fighting the fight while living on the streets and coping with severe PTSD. Winters does a beautiful job capturing the reality of what our heroes deal with upon coming home from service, families never understanding, walls closing in and memories of dead soldiers. My heart went out to Jake and Lacy as they battled a greedy man involved in many disgusting "projects." Although this is book 16 in the sniper series each book has it's own storyline with a mission and love interest. The occasional team member will make their presence known and assist the mission. Thanks to Ms. Winters for my advanced copy, I wrote my review voluntarily.
Jake’s story is so touching and emotional. He and Lacy are so perfect for each other and their story is both sweet and heart wrenching. I loved Jake’s relationship with Jamaal and Jamaal himself was a hoot. You couldn’t help but fall in love with both of these marines who are having a difficult time adjusting to life after Afghanistan. Then there is Lacy, who has her own emotional demons. The three of them develop a special bond and your heart goes out to each of them. I also loved how Zack was an integral part of the story. Of course Alex and the team all make appearances which is always enjoyable. I did receive a copy for an honest review however I would never hesitate to read any book in this series because they are all awesome. Don’t forget to have a box of tissues nearby, you will definitely need them.
What can I say but Wow! Irish Winters has done it again with Jake! When Jake and Lacy meet for the first time you know that chemistry is at work, even though it takes over two years to ignite. Lacy's secret in the closet that she is afraid for anyone to find out about is a total tear jerker, finally knowing what she had been through. Jake lives with the ghosts in his head, unable to separate reality from memories and hallucinations but he knows that Lacy is now on his daily watch. Put these two together with fellow displaced Marine, Jamaal and some killers with no conscience out to do things all their way and it becomes a deadly recipe for disaster. Add in The Ultimate hotness of Alex Stewart and his Team, the edge of your seat danger, hot sex, and brawn with a side of tenderness and you have one amazing book!! Beware lack of sleep ahead when you start this one!

WOW, what an amazing story. I have loved each and every one of Irish Winter's books and I always say that the last one that I have read is my favorite but this one just might be my favorite. This is the 16th book in The Company of Snipers series and they are all able to be read as stand alone books and I so hope that they don't end any time soon. If you haven't read one yet I really suggest you pick one up and read it. You will be so hooked. Be prepared for some serious reading time! Thanks yet again Irish for an awesome book, please continue!
I volunteered to read this book and I am oh so very glad I did!
Forget a 5 star review....Jake deserves 10 stars, at least!
Irish delves into the land of severe PTSS/PTSD and once again, enlightening us on how we, as a nation, really need to be more aware of what's going on with our Military. And she does so by letting Jake and Lacy tell us their tale of love and healing. We get more from the TEAM that we have all come to love and get introduced to some new characters we would love to see more of. And to top it off....Irish gives us all a little something special at the end.
Seriously, by far the best book I have read in a very long time. A definite must read!
What an intense punch! I was all set to read Jake and make him the broken one in the book that makes a recovery. Ms. Winters' isn't about to let my expectations get in the way of this incredible story. Jake was broken and he knew it. He also knew how to help his buddy Jamal from sliding too far into his rabbit hole. Lacy… she came out of nowhere and knocked me completely for a loop. Sure she had her secrets, but when we see her internal demons, wow! All of them have some level of being broken and not supported by family or society. They show great strength and iron will. When things go from bad to worse in their worlds, they stand up and amaze us.
This is actually the first book in the series that I have read and I loved it. They don't have to be read in order but I do want to get the rest of them. This was very well written and it pulls at the heart. Jake and Lacy are both haunted by their pasts. Jake sometimes relives the past and tries to save everyone, and Lacy is dealing the best she can. There is a new danger that has them working together, can they work past their demons and right the wrongs. And can they believe they are worthy of love. I was given an advanced reader copy and I voluntarily leave this review
Enjoyed very much. Intense moments. When Sergeant Jake Weylin and Lacy met it was like there hearts did too. Both marines shared some common issues. In there own ways dealt with PTSD. How they dealt was different. Someone was after them, and now with proof to expose them it was only a matter of time. Jake, her, and Jamaal. Lacy helped them when they needed it, and Jake would not let anyone hurt her.
Along the way Lacy and Jake feel fast for each other. See where things go
Jake and Lacy - true love - one man and a smarter woman
Here I go again. This is the third time I've started this review. I love Ms Winters stories. I fall in love with the characters. I'm drawn into the story, I cheer, I laugh, I cry. Each book is it's own story but some of the people you met previously do show up. They do work for the same company ,they are friends. Enjoy
I absolutely love this series!! Jake pulled at my heart probably more than any other book i have read for a very long time. However Jack and Lacy both have some very real and very scary demons they are trying to move on from, Lacy has found a way to send hers "home" and Jack finally found a woman that could help him in moving on. I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!
I think this may be my favorite. I loved the story and enjoyed catching up with all the TEAM in the last chapters. Don’t forget to read the very last page and keep turning until you get to the hidden epilogue. It continues with Jake and Lacy after their baby is born.
Jake is the sixteenth outstanding book in the series " In the Company of Snipers"written by author Irish Winters. Jake's story is almost unbearably sad. His story really touched my heart. I highly recommend it. Thanks to the author for the advance copy.
In true Irish Winters fashion the first few lines draw you in. This story was sweet and heartbreaking. I loved how the story was brought to a close with a few closures for some other characters as well. Great story. Great author.
This book is sweet and heartbreaking all at the same time. Irish Winters knows how to get you hooked from the first line and take you on a journey. Loved how older characters were brought back in and just like Jake were given closure and a home for the future.
This book hit so many of my feelings. It was a wonderful read. This book is amazing and i honestly think it is her best one yet.. i have recieved this book from the author in exchange for an honest review
I don't know how she does it but each story is so unique and so different. Yes they fall in love, but the situation in each storyline is so incredibly different. These books are so hard to put down!
I really loved reading this. Another great story. Need to get the next book. Thanks again Ms Winters, I don't know how you do it, but you always come up with very interesting and captivating stories. I'm hooked! 😃💜
A thought-provoking story of one mans experience after being in the military. Jake Weylin fights demons from his days as a USMC scout sniper, and he keeps his distance from most of the world, while he battles in his mind for the world he’s currently in. When he crosses paths with Lacy Wright, a fellow marine, his life is in for one hell of a ride.
