Everything you know is about to change.

Victoria Brie (yes, like the cheese) has her future planned: go to an Ivy-League school, become a medical doctor, save the world. Easy as pie.

If only life were that simple.

When she comes home to find her parents murdered by an elf — yeah, an elf — she’s thrust into a world of magic, mystery, and a madman who wants her dead. The question is… why?

Merged with a powerful artifact created by an evil mastermind, Victoria is hunted, stabbed, burned, shot, and attacked in the street… but she’s a survivor, damn it, and no one’s taking her out. She falls in love with the magical underground city of Fairhaven, and when the elf who assassinated her parents comes after her new home, she’s not taking any prisoners.

This series is an enchanting urban fantasy saga with a steampunk twist. Your only regret will be not starting it sooner.

WARNING! This story contains cursing because these eighteen-year-olds are honorable rebels. If cursing offends you, you might not like this book.

Glow: The Revelations of Oriceran
The Fairhaven Chronicles, Book 1
By: S. M. Boyce, Michael Anderle, Martha Carr
Narrated by: Brittany Pressley
This is a story of friendship, family, magic, and power. It's also a book about belonging. Two gals who have been friends forever must find a fantasy town and a wizard that lives there. I love this town! Great imagination! I would want to live here! Great plot, action, and it is just a lot of fun!
The narration is terrific too!

I want to live in Fairhaven!!

Victoria Brie is normal teenager of two journalists parents until...her parents are killed. And not in car accident or plane crash either. Victoria's parents are killed by something that shouldn't exist, I mean people don't have pointed ears or throw fire, right? The weirdest thing is just before her dad dies, he gives Victoria a gift. This gift hurts, like so darn bad, feels like her arm is going to fall off, hurt. As soon as the gift is on her arm, she starts noticing the bad guy who killed her parents, Luak, is having a hard time getting past her new defenses. This angers the fire throwing elf so he sets fire to the only home she's ever known.

Victoria is devastated. She has lost everything, except Audrey, her best friend. And to top it all off, she's stuck with a thing stuck in arm she can't control. Oh, and a killer elf is loose. The girls make it their mission to find out more about the thing in Victoria's arm and how to kill Luak.

After her parents memorial, Victoria has a meeting with their attorney. The attorney tells Victoria that she will have enough money to live off for the rest of her life and gives her a safety deposit box key. Well, you can imagine, what the girls did? Yep! Off to the bank. In the box she finds a velvet bag of crystals and a notebook. The notebook is full of information on place called Fairhaven with information on Oriceran also. There are also letters from her parents and directions for what to do next. And guess what happens next?? Luak!! He attacks the girls but Audrey was prepared, she shot him. Didn't do a whole lot of good though. Luak ends up destroying the notebook.

The girls decide to head to the strange new world of Fairhaven, yep without any idea where to find their guide. Or who to trust, any clue what to do what so ever. Victoria and Audrey muddle through and end up doing what needs to be done by being them. I want to tell you everything, but that wouldn't be right.

This is an amazing book with an outstanding world within a world. There is even a whole new game to play. Berserk! I'm serious. The characters draw you in, no matter what they are, human, wizard, ogre, goblin, or even elf. I am sure you'll love these people and places. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Looks like I managed to start two new urban fantasy series in a row. First Samantha Kane and now The Fairhaven Chronicles. l would personally classify this one as young adult as well as urban fantasy though.

Again this is a story that starts off with a young girl who suddenly gets thrown into a mystical world where magic is real and thing go bump in the night. Yes yes l know, l have been using that last expression a lot but I happen to like it.

However this is also a story about a young girl seeking revenge. Our protagonist are not exactly finding her new world by falling into a rabbit hole. Instead she is introduced to it by means of death and mayhem. There certainly is no uncertainty who the big bad wolf, eeh…I mean elf, is as he presents himself in a way that makes this point quite clear in the first few pages of the book.

So there is the magical world and there is there is the revenge. There is however also a third theme running through this book. That is the theme of two BFF’s taking this perilous journey together. Alongside Victoria is her best friend and as the story progresses their lives and destiny becomes more and more intertwined.

The story is quite plain and the writing simple. That is not to say that it is a bad story nor that the writing is bad but it is why l decided to put the book in the young adult category.

I quite liked the book. It is a good fast paced adventure. There are plenty of likable characters including wizards, orcs and various other kinds of fantastic creatures. There is a fair bit of humor and a of course a healthy dose of action.

As l am writing this l am already reading book #3 in this series. As I said the story and the writing is fairly simple so the books are quite quick reads. Still, the story builds itself up and I do feel eager to learn what’s going to happen in the next chapter not to mention the next book.

It had potential, but didn't do it for me

At the beginning of the story Victoria witnesses her parents brutal murder by Luak "the bad guy" elf. Yea, he's an elf, magic is real, and Victoria is now invested.

Along with her friend Audrey, (who hops on the "lets kill Luak bandwagon almost immediately) Victoria goes on an adventure that lands them in the magical land of Fairhaven.

Fairhaven is an interesting place with Elves, Trolls, Wizards and all kinds of other magical creatures, that Victoria's parents were very well aware of. It turns out her journalist parents pushed their way into this world and bullied people to sate their curiosity.

The whole drive behind this story is revenge, and Victoria has it in her head that she is going to train to use the artifact A.K.A " magical knife in her arm" and then she is going to kill Luak to avenge her parents.

There is an issue though, the artifact is black magic and illegal, and anyone found with an artifact like hers is given an immediate death sentence. So Victoria has to hide it by wearing long sleeves all the time. That's not such a big deal, but the magic of the artifact is reactive to Victoria's emotions, and can out her as a "host" of the artifact at any time, and for a hothead like Victoria that's tough.

Honestly, Victoria is a hothead with a hero complex. Both her and Audrey have personalities akin to stereotypical high school jocks. I just couldn't warm up to them.

This is bad, because for me to like a book, I really need to at least like the main characters, and if I don't it just spoils everything for me. I won't be reading anymore of this series. 2⭐'s -its just not my cup of tea.

Wow! What a powerful beginning to this series!

From the first sentence, I was gripped, and then I sat and continued to read this story and, within minutes, I was crying so hard, I had to stop, and sort myself out!

I've always found Michael Anderle's writing to be powerful, but his teamwork with Martha Carr makes this ever stronger, more powerful, emotionally, and with such depths, it's got ever harder, when I reach the end of a book, to want to stop there - which, thankfully, because they both write so prolifically, this means that there are still many more books, and series, for me to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed the concept of two 'ordinary' human girls getting involved with Oriceran, and all of the mixture of magic, monsters, and of so many types of Magicals, that they have to learn to deal with, and so quickly.

I also totally love the game 'Berserk' and, even though the girls likened it to Quidditch, I honestly think it's nothing like that, and it has it's own, unique, rules! Lol

Victoria and Audrey have their own strengths, and weaknesses that, fortunately, blend together to give them a solid base to work with and, in playing Berserk, they show this to the full - this was a fun game, even though I kept wincing - a lot! Lol

I'm loving that both girls are training so hard, each to her own strengths and that, despite her deep need for Justice, for the brutal murder of her parents, and also the vengeance she also feels - after all, she's only human - Victoria can be talked down out of her rage at Luak, to be cognizant of all that's happening around her.

I honestly don't know where this story is leading, but I'm very eager to get on to book two: 'Shimmer', in order to find out, so I'm going to finish writing this review, and I'll start reading it, then I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!

A return to the Oriceran universe. After being disappointed with the Leira Chronicles and the School of Necessary Magic, I’ve been wary of the universe. That said I’ve also seen pretty incredible stories in this universe as well. Thus, I thought to try the Fairhaven Chronicles and found myself… intrigued.

Glow has a charm to it that other Oriceran books fail to grasp. A sense of wonder and a point of view not so condescending that it makes the novel reek of superiority. It is hard to feel for characters that simple appear superior in all aspects to any other lifeform.

It also does something better than most of the other Oriceran novels that I’ve read thus far. Its pacing isn’t frantic and the story flows smoothly. The words don’t seem rushed to the point of haste making waste of a good story.

That said it does have a couple of issues. One being everything seems too simplistic for the protagonist to overcome. While sometimes the main characters get their butts whooped, other times it seems like they simply have no issues or challenges whatsoever.

Outside of that, the only other major issue is that the ending seems rather abrupt. Little happens and it happens in so few words that it could have been fleshed out much more fully.

Overall, a pretty decent start to the next chapter of my reading in the Oriceran universe. Looking forward to seeing where this all goes. I would recommend giving this a try over the official start with the Leira Chronicles.

So, I can say that I believe the MC of the book to be inspired by a real person, because I have a friend who acts EXACTLY like her. Head strong and listens to NOBODY until 11th hour and then somehow pulls a miracle out of her ass to stop things from becoming a disaster. The MC does have a reason to be jaded and angry af. With that said, I do like how the other people around her know about what's going on and try to help her cope with her grief as well as trying to adapt to their new surrounds all in the span of like 2 weeks. A LOT happens quickly, but then the book slows down and evens out relatively quickly. I enjoyed the book. I also love the wizard who's teaching the young MC how to control what she's becoming and that her best friend isn't one "woe me" type of people. When something is off, she's let's the MC know she's being a dunce. The witty banter back and forth and the dark and light tones weaved in together make for an enjoyable read.

Wow! What a wonderful world!

I love Fairhaven! Ms Boyce has done a wonderful job of world building in this book. I want to live there! Lots of magical creatures like ogres, goblins, elves and more - plus two humans -Victoria and Audrey. The book starts out with lots of drama as Victoria comes home from school finding her parents losing a battle for their lives with an evil elf. These two besties follow a map through a portal to the underground town of Fairhaven seeking revenge for the deaths of Victoria’s parents. Here they meet kind and wonderful characters which this author describes so vividly that I have fallen in love with them. In order to hone their skills in preparation to take down this evil elf, the girls learn to play a popular game of Berserk which sounds so fun! I am now hooked on this series. Onward to Shimmer.........!

A good first novel in a new series.

The characters were well written, if somewhat lacking in depth and each went through significant growth. The setting is interesting although it could use more exploration, which will likely happen in the following books.

The plot was formulaic and simple following the old murdered kin, quest for revenge with sudden magic powers and a wide elderly teacher. This fit the ancient archetype of the Hero's Quest found in so many stories from the mythological Hercules and Gilgamesh to starwars and Robert Jordans wheel of Time saga.

This doesn't detract from the story but instead gives a strong foundation for the following novels to build on.

It’s ok

Given what happened at the beginning it’s understandable the way that Victoria reacts as far as being vengeful. On the other hand the only time she’s angry in the book is when she’s thinking about the murderer himself. Otherwise, she’s enjoying her new life. Jealous Audrey, such a great best friend. So glad she’s not my best friend. Oh, a berserk? When it’s being introduced to you think of Harry Potter and Quidditch. Pay attention. The only reason this book got three stars is because I could read it all the way through without wanting to throw my phone. That’s it.. sorry..

The Hero

Victoria Brie's parents were murdered by a magical elf. As his last act before death, her father gave her an artifact with dark magic that gives her a chance to protect herself. Audrey, her best friend, goes with her to protect her. I like Victoria's stubborn, never give up attitude. Audrey is loyal and protective and their relationship adds a sweetness to the story. The characters are l compelling and grow in competence. I look forward to the next book "Shimmer".

Great story

The foundation of this series Revelations of Oriceran is growing as a different author adds their twist. As a whole the universe created is growing by keeps and bonds. This expansion is like a facet of a Jewel a part of the whole that just adds to the brilliants. Looking forward to the next chapter of Audrey and Vivian story.

Good start to the series.

Some fun characters, loved Bertha. Enjoyed the story, not sure what to think of Fairhaven.

Well Victoria is hell bent on revenge for the murder of her parents that nothing else matters. Just as well Bertha is there for Victoria 's BFF who left everything she knows to support Victoria through such a hard time.

A new heroine

A gentle introduction, quickly followed by explosive action. There are hints and tantalising teasers sprinkled throughout, and the unfurling of the story is smooth and interesting. The strength of friendship is beautifully portrayed, and strong emotions are shared in their fullness.

A new author for me, and I look forward to reading more of her works.

There are YA books that are entertaining & written in a way that adults can truly enjoy them. This is not one of those books. In fairness, the overall story was interesting. however, the 2 main female characters were annoying & the situation itself was "too easy". Who knows, maybe they'll evolve into something more. :)

Not as good as I expected..

The summary of the storyline sounded good and the book cover was okay. The first chapter started good. After the parents died, the mc personality got annoying. It got worst with the whiplash of changes in characters P.O.V. at every paragraph. Too confusing for me and ended up too hard to follow. DNF for sure.

Love the characters, plot and setting. Victoria and Audrey are amazing.
It's a story of action, grief, loss and is so creative. The characters are so unique and have depth.
This was kindle unlimited and had a nice page count, I loved how sometimes we got Audrey's POV and how she is training in weapons while Vic trains in other things.

Its ok

Its a good story! I found some parts a bit confusing. I have read other books by these 2 authors that I liked a lot better. For me there is something missing in this book. Just my opinion. Its just doesn't have that wow factor that I usually have when reading their stories.

Fantastic Story

This newest addition to the Oriceran universe is a very interesting story, and the main character is very interesting as well. It has just a touch of steampunk to make it all the more interesting. The next book should be rather interesting to read as well. 😎

Am I the only one who wasn’t won over by this book? I couldn’t make it past the trite writing style where every thought the character has makes me want to poke my eyeballs out. “Oh my god my world will never be the same” kind of writing. You know the type. I regret to say I DNF at 24%.

Glow was "dang" good book.

The characters are so good, the story line is different & I'm so happy I took the time to search the sci-fi, urban, speculative genre for something new. I am immediate moving on to Shimmer!

Enjoyed the heck out of this!

Definitely a book to read if you like YA fantasy. Violence-- there is plenty. The characters are definitely there. Victoria and Audrey show up as nor all teens but both grow much larger as you go through this tale! I love the twist on the characters

This was a really good read, probably more aimed at young adults but I still enjoyed it in a Harry potter type way. The main protagonist was well defined and the descriptive text was good. Recommended for adults too!

Real urban fantasy

It's so difficult to find true urban fantasy, the kind not polluted with unnecessary romance, and filled with creative magic, original characters, and an engrossing story. This tale has it all. Read it and prepare to binge read the next in the series, too.

I wanted to like this but I didn’t like how many POVs you got or the main characters. Everything was just “let’s run headlong first into danger and defend things we know nothing about.” Will prob at least read the next one to see if I can get into it more.

It was well written and was a good read. The friendship of the heroine and her friend was a great aspect of the story line. Revenge leads to a new world with new friends and challenges. But the original friendship stays strong.
