River's End Ranch #29

Midwife's Marvel

Rate this book
Dr. Joshua Hardy is at his wit’s end. It's bad enough that his beloved great-aunt is approaching dementia, and is always talking about hearing the fairies, but now she's insisting they want to talk to him too! To a scientist like Joshua, the idea is preposterous…right up until the moment he meets Allison Ravenwing.

Allison is proud of the work she does for the laboring mamas of Riston, and she doesn't consider her life lacking. At forty, she's set in her ways and knows what she wants from life: conversations with her little brother, her grandmother's special tea, and the look of wonder on a mother's face as she meets her baby for the first time. But Allison can't deny that sharing conversations, successes, and challenges with Joshua brings a new kind of joy to her heart.

As Joshua is struggling with his aunt's revelations, a mysterious something leads a desperate pair of orphans right into his heart, and Joshua and Allison need to make some difficult decisions about their comfortable lives. Do they maintain the status quo, or opt for something truly... Marvelous.

NUTS TO THOSE STUPID FAIRIES

The story is a wonderful addition to the River’s End Ranch Series but as each of them will read well as a stand-alone novel. Midwife’s Marvel will also have little bits and pieces from previous stories, as well as, many characters from this series. The story was near and dear to my heart, having a midwife, and the care and compassion that Allison shows for her patients, like Ellie. Having used a midwife for the birth of two of my children, I love reading stories that help emphasize the relationship between midwife and birthing couple.

The story is an experience in family, faith, love, science, mystery, and compassion, while it is also a love story for Joshua and Allison. It is a chance for a new beginning for them, and for two children, Nellie and Colin. There is the connection of long-standing friendships between Joshua and Will, and the admiration Joshua has for his great-aunt Jaclyn. It also shows that age doesn’t matter when it comes to finding love and happiness and maybe, just maybe listening to what the fairies are trying to tell you.

The plot has Joshua back in River’s End, and while visiting his long-time friend, Will, he will meet Ellie’s midwife, Allison Ravenwing. Joshua is a rocket scientist who discovered and patented a type of fertilizer that can turn factory waste and turn it into a viable fertilization method. Allison has devoted her life to nursing and becoming a certified nurse midwife. Their work has been their life, and in many ways, they were married to their careers. But meeting each other, they each feel something.

Aunt Jaclyn talks to the fairies and listens to what they have to say and is upset with Josh for not listening. “I might listen to my heart, but I’m not going to go start believing in fairies anytime soon.” The more he is with Allison, the more he wants to be with her. They talk for hours, and enjoy each other’s company, but could they be falling in love?

“The knowledge crashed over him with a certainty he felt deep in his bones. Force equals mass times acceleration, the Gravitational Constant is six-point-six-seven-four times ten-to-the-negative-eleven, oxygen has eight electrons, and I love her. These are scientific certainties.”

Life and love have a way of finding you when you aren’t looking. Finding two abused runaway children, pull Josh and Allison together for the welfare of the children. What does Aunt Jaclyn mean when she says that Allison isn’t the woman for him and the fairies told her so? “Allison Ravenwing was the woman for him. The fairies proved it.” “You’re the answer to a prayer I didn’t even realize I was praying.”

The story is new beginnings and learning to trust and believe outside of what you always thought was the answer. “We are stronger—better—together than we were apart.” “The family God—and the fairies—had brought him.” Just believe and open your mind and heart to the magic of the fairies.

This review offered in exchange for an advanced reader’s copy.

Dr. Joshua Hardy returns to his boyhood home in Riston, Idaho to be reunited with his beloved and eccentric Aunt Jaclyn. With a houseful of pet rabbits and an uncanny talent as a matchmaker, she immediately confronts confirmed bachelor “Joshy” with her secret romantic weapon: fairies! Joshua, an actual rocket scientist, has his empirical sensibilities assaulted and believes Aunt Jaclyn has entered terminal dementia. However, he by chance, (or was it?) runs into Allison Ravenwing, certified midwife/doula to his best friend Will’s pregnant wife, Ellie.

Both Joshua and Allison, a lovely Bitterroot Salish woman, are beyond forty and content with their professional lives and believe they are beyond the reach of romance. But, do Aunt Jaclyn’s fairies have different plans for them? The instantaneous attraction between these two is other-worldly, much to their confusion!

The only thing the story lacks is a couple of sweet children. Well, it doesn’t take long for the author to introduce a couple of young Native American children who are running away from their abusive home and are rescued by Allison and Joshua. What is to become of these youngsters?

The sense of mystery and wonderment the author weaves around these two lovers as the supernatural invades their romance is awe-inspiring. Just as thrilling is the wonderful joy of witnessing a live birth and the intimate bond between the new mother Ellie and her midwife/doula Allison.

This novella is near perfection in its ability to instantly hook the reader from the very beginning to its heart-warming conclusion with full-throttle emotion. I must add that this erstwhile tough guy and Vietnam Vet has also witnessed the live birth of his two children and experienced for himself the awe and wonderment of a woman bringing forth new life….the most thrilling adventure of all.

Caroline Lee has done it again with her awesome characters and story.

This is a fantastic read and so fun. I love happy endings and this one has a few. I loved this story and there are surprises too. Good ones, but unbelievable ones at least until they really happened.
I highly recommend this story by Ms. Lee. She is a fantastic author and a blessing to anyone who reads her wonderful stories. This one also has a surprise related to another of her wonderful series. It did sort of take me by surprise and I've read this other series already and loved every story in it.
In fact if you haven't read any of the River's End Ranch by five wonderful authors you should. To get to know who's who and background of this really fun ranch start at the beginning and they are all wonderful stories and all very good. The good thing too is they are on Kindle Unlimited so you read for free with a monthly general fee and if yo read a lot it is worth it to have this service without buying all the books. Give it a try and start reading this really awesome series today. Oh I couldn't put it down either.

I loved this book. To be fair, I've enjoyed the previous 28 books in this series also, but this book hits a personal spot for me. My bff in a home birth midwife. Until 10 years ago I didn't realize such a thing existed. But over the past 10 years of watching her I have formed a great respect and love for these women. The support they offer and the bond they form with their mama's is amazing. There is not a lot of contemporary stuff out there about today's midwives. Sure you read about them in historical novels but even then it's usually in passing because the main character of the story is the lady having the baby. As soon as I realized that Caroline was writing about a contemporary midwife I was beyond excited. The story is very good and I hope that Alison will be seen in future books as some of the other ladies at River's End Ranch decide to follow Ellie's footsteps and have a home birth. I definitely recommend this book and not just because of the midwife stuff; it's great from start to finish. I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.

Hero: Dr. Joshua -rocket scientist---- Heroine: Allison Ravenwing -midwife
plot/storyline:4.5* Engaging and fun. This was a sweet story of two people around the age of 40 who have never been married.
Ending-4.5*- A wonderfully sweet HEA. loved the epilogue!
Reading Enjoyment:4.5* I really enjoyed the fairies parts in this story! Their meeting was no accident, it was orchestrated by the fairies and was love at first sight. Between the fairies, a "crazy" old aunt, a short courtship, and 2 children who need love and a family,... you get a magical love story that will have you laugh and cry.
Overall rating:4.5 -(out of 5*)

An engineer, a midwife, and Jaclyn's fairies

This is book 29 in a multi writer series. I think that I unintentionally skipped most of the 20's but this one intrigued me. A chemical engineer, a midwife, and Jaclyn with her fairies.

It does help to have read at least some of the series as there is a cast of characters that show up every now and then. But this could stand on its own.

It was a short sweet read, just what I was looking for today. I like the fact that the included a chemical engineer which is what I am and a Native American as the West is a diverse place. It also contains imagery that I felt was very strong.

Retreat or insane asylum?

While there were some parts that were sweet (finding the 2 kids, laboring mother), other parts were flat out wrong (fostering process). Most of this book was filled with "fairy talk", which makes me think that River's End Ranch is really an insane asylum. Bigfoot? Fairies? A visible golden thread connecting 2 hearts? This book should be in the fantasy category because it's just so unreal. And don't forget the fact that we don't even know the 2 main characters.
85% of thus book was ridiculously stupid, so don't waste your time.

The Fairies are front and center in this book

This is the story of Joshua, scientist, and Allison, the midwife. If you are reading this as a stand alone book; you can enjoy it. If you follow the River's End Ranch series it is one of the best. Joshua is Jaclyn's nephew. Jaclyn with her gnomes in the yard and friendly rabbits in the yard and house, believes in fairies that speak to her. Joshua is a scientist and fairies are silly.

Oh, for the love of fairies! Josh & Alison’s meeting was no accident, it was orchestrated by the fairies & sprinkled with love from Aunt Jaclyn! Although their differences make a connection seem improbable, somehow fairy magic brings them together and give them a special task to grow their love. Top notch River’s End Perfection, and loved the tie ins from other series!

Never to late

Finding love doesn't have a expiration date. Allison and Joshua are proof that finding love can happen at any age. Comfortably settled into their careers and life styles, the fairies strike again, and they not only find a meaningful relationship, but an instant family with two needy children.

Really sweet.

This is the second book of this author' s that has mentioned special people and the possibilities available for them- I had no idea that down's syndrome kids could go to college and there were programs available for them. Thank you Ms. LEE.
Back to the book, both Allison and Joshua are great.

This was a nice story of two people around 40 years old who have never been married falling in love. Add in some fairy dust and a short courtship, because at this age you know what you want, and you get a magical story. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.

Excellent as always. Book #29 in a series. Has not lost it's momentum or freshness. Every book is connected but could be stand alone. It helps to read all and in order but not neces waitingsarily essential. Am anxiously awaiting the next episode!

I have loved all the books in this series but I have to say this is one of my favorites. Trying to convince a man of science that the fairies are real. It turned out really sweet and romantic.

Actually pretty powerful

Not for the first time Caroline's insights have made a profound change for me. As one must open one's heart to hear the fairies one must also open one's heart to grow...

Enjoyable read

The author artfully took the story line in unanticipated directions. I suggest one read this if one likes to watch an excellent writer twist and turn the plot of a good romance novel.

Josh & Allison
He is here to visit his great aunt Jacklyn and write a book; she is here to deliver a baby. What happens when fairies, gnomes, orphans and a search for a ‘grandma’ name for Muzz is added? Fun and Games reign! (Whitewater Wooing; Blacksmith's Beauty)
