A Child of Perometheus

Rate this book
All Jo wanted was to help Earth overcome the century-old genetic mutation that has devastated Earth’s population.

And then she got kidnapped by an alien.

Okay, so, kidnapped might be the wrong word. Zan did whisk her across the galaxy to a planet full of aliens who treat her like a science experiment, but he did it to save her life.

He’s actually not that bad. In fact, she might even like him. Maybe a little too much.

Zan’s people have a lot more in common with humans than she could have ever thought possible, including their own population crisis. Still, there’s no denying their differences. In particular, there aren’t many females around.

Unfortunately, there are other intelligent lifeforms in the universe, and some of them are getting desperate. If they were to learn about Earth, it could mean danger for all human women…

It started off so well, I was excited to see a new author of sci-fi series. It had a good, if complex story about genetics and the universe. at the start, I liked the writing, characters and world building. A range of interesting aliens, a premise of good versus evil but the strong characters morphed in to something else as it continued. The H was great, at the start he's a sweet beta, he saved her and potentially all humanity, but by the end the focus of the story has him as HER partner, not as strong H that he was. But the h is just so annoying. She's a scientist, saved by aliens, frightened but treated well and revered by the H, his society and colleagues. She cried - a lot, showed little curiosity, but was always feeling morally superior. She's so righteous, with a closed mind and continually judges others and their culture. By the end, when she's had so much opportunity to learn, she publicly accuses an innocent character of an horrific action, causing great distress. That is not what I want to see in a heroine, I didn't like her at all, so it was a struggle to finish.

What an amazing and wonderfully scripted alien/sci-fi romance. It's been awhile since I've read one and I'm thrilled I took a chance on Child of Perometheus.

The characters in this novel really steal the show. I love the strong heroine Jo and her brother Ben but her best friend Trish was excellently written and hilarious. Who doesn't love a great sidekick? Zan was my kind of hero -handsome, kind, attentive, and caring. I love an alpha male who takes charge of his woman, is protective, and loves her unconditionally.

The plot moves along at a steady pace and I love the premise that Earth women and Zan's race have reproductive issues that just might be able to complement the other. They're compatible in ways that no one realizes until it becomes clear that other alien races are a threat to human women, particularly the Gangor. The Gangor evil barbarian alien race was also expertly written. Rich detail is fluent throughout the book which I enjoyed.

The second half of the book really took off for me after the foundation had been laid, and there was plenty of action, suspense, nail biting tension, romance, and unexpected twists and turns. I love when an author can continually surprise me, which was certainly the case here with such a well-written and unique story. This is one novel you won't want to miss. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

At the conclusion I was shocked to learn this is a new author. Wow, reads like a seasoned writer wrote it and I'll be happy to read any sequels or more from Ms. Prince.

Mars Needs Women trope - but nicely done!

This debut novel by Harper Prince is chock full of goodness! Set in the not too distant future, women outnumber men by 7-1 on Earth. Our heroine, Jo, is working in a fertility clinic trying to solve the genetic issue that is causing more females to be born than males. During a weekend away from the city, she runs into an alien that has crashed on Earth. After she receives a life-threatening injury, she wakes up on his world.

The society that Jo finds herself in is pretty much the opposite of Earth. Here, fertile women are in the minority, which causes many many cultural misunderstandings on Jo's part. We see the budding romance as time passes, and come to root for the couple.

One thing I truly enjoyed about this book is that Jo is not perfect. She has knee-jerk reactions that made me angry at her and sad for her, at various times. Jo was quick to make a judgement but also quick to realize when she was not considering the culture or that she was wrong. Jo just felt real to me.

I hope to see more of this world and more of Jo and her alien love!

A really well told Alien Romance Book

I am surprised that this book doesn't have that many reviews. It is a pretty well detailed and thought out alien abduction romance book. Even though I kinda hoped she would end up with a harem, it is fine that she didn't. Loved the story.

2.5⭐️ but I'm not feeling generous enough to round up to 3⭐️

The MCs frustrated me so much in this book, but mostly Jo. The cultural insensitivity, the moral superiority, etc. While her heart was kinda in the right place at times, her actions and words were still harmful.

I don't like how her career ambitions went from "I want to do X" to "I want to help Zan do X." I understand he had a more advanced scientific background and technology, but still - she was a grad student working on a PhD before she was taken. She can't be taught?

How many times does it need to be said that Jo is tiny with such wide, child-bearing hips? I got it the first 5 times.

The White Savior-flavor of this story also just sat bad on my tongue. It seemed like an easy way to wrap up the zhor'i plot without actually having to work for their betterment. Where's the actual conversation about why Zhuna did what she did? Idk.

I'm also wondering about the repercussions to the treaty with the Gangors with Jo's interview at the end of the book? Is that abandoned now?

Also, did anyone explain to Trisha and Emily that these alien dudes mate for life or...? Like, sure when you're straight and you have to fight 10 other women for 1 man or share - I guess you might jump at the chance for man who only loves you, but...

I don't know how I could recommend this book be better, especially when I know it could've been much worse. I think this story just did not click with me, and that's fine.

Was this the best book I've ever read? No. Was this the best sci-fi romance book I've ever read? Yeah, probably.

The characters and relationship are realistic and it's easy to identify with them. The MFC acts suitable disturbed at having been abducted by aliens, and the MMC treats her accordingly. It's a definite "mars needs girls" trope, but done oh so well.

I've searched high and low for more from this author, and was genuinely sad to see this book no longer on Kindle Unlimited. I wish she would write more, I'd gobble it up!

Really inventive and entertaining! I found Jo to be an incredibly likable protagonist and I was definitely invested in how her story (and love life) played out. I hadn't read many (any?) sci-fi romance novels before and would now definitely seek out more in this genre. I can't wait to see what else Ms. Prince has up her sleeve and anxiously await the next installment of this series!

Note pour moi-même :

This was a very well written book. I'm a little surprised it doesn't have more reviews. I was searching for an alien romance when I found a blog that recommended this and it was just what I needed. It is a slow burn science driven story that kept me glued from start to finish.

Amazing Read

This book was amazing the world building was truly awesome. I love the main characters and how they develop as people and as a couple. The supporting characters are also very well written. There were many character arcs in this book. This book was worth every word.

Imperfectly perfect hero

Awesome sci-fi romance with some of my faves.... language barrier, cultural hurdles, a hero with smarts, and a heroine with some fire.

I love this book so much! The romance is so sweet, and it makes me feel like cuddling under a warm blanket. After I read it the first time, I immediately went back and read it again because I couldn’t believe that a book this good isn’t more popular! This book is a total diamond in the rough - so don’t let the small number of reviews scare you away!

So here’s a (mostly spoiler-free) list of the reasons I love this book:

1. The heroine is really intelligent, but makes mistakes. As a character, she feels like a real person, not just a perfect facsimile.

2. The hero is a total Cinnamon Roll (read: sweetheart). He’s also intelligent; he challenges the heroine in conversations.

3. There’s real chemistry between the two leads. They share a similar sense of humor and a lot of common interests. I never once questioned that these two were meant to be together.

4. The world building is very well done. I liked the way that the alien cultures and sci-fi concepts are developed.

5. This is definitely a sci-fi romance, in that the plot has a healthy mix of elements from both genres. As I’m a big fan of both, this made me really happy.

6. As this is a romance, the ending is HEA.

I don’t know if I’ve convinced you at this point, but all I can ask is for you to PLEASE give this one a try!! I have no motivation for doing so (read: this is not a paid review and I have no personal connection to the author). I really would love to see this book get more love both because it’s amazing and because I desperately hope that the author keeps writing!

This is one of the best scifi romances I’ve read. I read it originally on Kindle Unlimited but bought it after because I liked it so much, and now I’m glad I did, because it looks like this book has been taken down!

If you get a chance to read this, I highly recommend you do so! It’s a very high concept scifi romance with great world building, a super sweet, romantic hero, and a spitfire, flawed and realistic feeling heroine.

TW for off-screen SA and several threats and mentions of it. This book deals heavily with power dynamics between genders.
