Three friends take a much-needed vacation in Raynham, MA.  If you are a fan of author Wol-vriey's horror novels, you may recognize the name of this town.  Strange things occur in Raynham, as if it is a gate to other worlds.  Jessica, Lucy and Reby experience odd sensations as they settle into their temporary home.  The olfactory presence of rot and death floods the atmosphere, only to vanish again.  Jessica, who has taken the vacation due to a near-breakdown at her advertising job, finds that her nails have turned blue.  The color blue is prominent in the hallucinations that haunt the three women and one of their neighbors.  Horrible images of violence and desecration are manifested, only to fade away as if they had never existed.  Jessica visits a local doctor, and is told that her blue nails are the result of an allergy, for which she is treated with medication.  Jessica is not sure what she is taking, but she experiences moments of fear and panic, followed by extreme calm and self-confidence.  Her friend Reby douses her own fears in sex with a married neighbor.  Their friend Lucy is permanently high, and does not know what to make of her hallucinations.  Something monstrous seems to be feeding on her, but who would believe her if she told them?  Meanwhile, the philandering neighbor's wife has a date with a weapon.  The normally timid woman has developed a deadly temper.  Could the local Realms of Consciousness Temple be responsible for the mood swings and strange behavior in Raynham?  Its recruiting members dress in blue and preach Alternity.  Jessica attempts to hold on to her sanity.  In order to remain employable, she must be clearheaded.  Jessica misses work.  Work means everything to her.  A new job opportunity is about to present itself.

I always enjoy Wol-vriey's extreme offerings.  Blue Nightmares was more otherworldly and intricate to me, which was a definite bonus.  This one had plenty of meat on its bones.  I saw Sinis.  So will you.

Many thanks to the author, who provided me with a free e-copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Author: Wol-vriey
Genre(s): Horror
Rating: 2 stars

Loves, Likes, Adores:
It was quite the unique story, thats for sure!

Dislikes, Hates, Ignores:
More so in the beginning but also only with the female characters, their physical appearance (such as how “fat” or “skinny” they were) was repeatedly mentioned. This got irritating for me after a point. Also near the end, I felt it started to drag on and I started to lose interest.

I did not finish this book. I made it to 35%. The women in this book are terrible and combined with the cheating spouse, I couldn't connect enough to finish the book.

I received my copy of this book via Goodreads giveaway, which does not in any way influence my review.

It did, however, make me feel bad about DNFing it, because from the synopsis it sounded like quirky horror which I find enjoyable when done well.

I do appreciate the time the author invested in writing the book, and the fact that he mailed it promptly after the contest. This book, however, is a steaming hot pile of garbage.

There were so many things wrong here. First: women don't think, speak, or act like this. This was so over-the-top, full-on, misogynistic sex fantasy (in the 27 pages I managed to read before the urge to vomit became too great) that it felt like it was being written by a hormonal, overly stimulated fifteen-year-old boy who hadn't been near a vagina since he exited the womb.

Second: How can you be 34 years old, an ad-agency exec (which one would presume required a college education, meaning you would be roughly 22 upon entering the job force), work for 12 years, and have already accrued 8 years of paid leave? Well someone please sign me up for this job?

Third: Prepositions and articles are not the enemy. You can throw in a "to" or "the" now and again without suffering any ill effects.

Four: Plurals vs. possessives. "Its" is not the same as "it's."

Five: Telling, not showing. I haven't seen that much between parentheses in that few pages since Algebra I.

Six: Writing what you know, only it's wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong with talking about your flatmates or reminiscing about attending Uni. Unless you are writing from the perspective of Americans. They don't do that unless they are being pretentious.

Seven: Clichés. So many tired phrases, reading them made me as worn out as they are.

Eight: This sentence on page 27, which was as far as I could bring myself to read: "While her exhaust waters gently trickled from her, Jessica thought back through the previous days."

No. Just no.

Putting this one down, donating, and hoping the next person to pick it up enjoys it more than I did.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

In 'Blue Nightmares', Jessica Schreiber decides to spend her company-enforced vacation with her friends in a beautiful cottage but she soon gets more than she bargained for. She begins having strange, disturbing dreams and wakes up to find that her nails have turned blue. As her relaxing downtime quickly becomes a never-ending nightmare, she realizes that perhaps there is no escape after all..

The premise was undoubtedly intriguing. Visions of tentacles, the stench of death and decay, voices whispering mysterious messages.. those created a sense of suspense and impending doom. The intricate descriptions of Jessica's dreams were interesting and kept me reading. However, there was too much repetition especially concerning the colour blue. I lost count of the number of times that the author stated that Jessica's nails were blue. The colour is an integral part of the storyline - that's established early on.

Jessica was the only character who was somewhat fleshed out. There was a lot of background information regarding her personal and professional life. She was convincing as someone suffering from job burnout as her thoughts constantly revolved around itching to work even though she was supposed to de-stress and unwind. As she always prioritized work, her marriages fell apart. Despite that, she still remained fully committed to excelling at her job.

The other characters were not only unlikeable; they were also merely cardboard characters. Lucy was high all the time, her head filled with hallucinations and rambling, senseless thoughts. Reby was obsessed with having sex - any man would do. She had no personality whatsoever outside of the bedroom (or wherever she chose to do her favourite activity). Meanwhile, the girls' neighbours - a middle-aged married couple Larry and Colleen were stereotypical in every way possible.

There was lots of sex and gore but most were gratuitous and barely contributed to the development of the storyline. Instead of some clues and information being gradually revealed throughout the story, the answers were given within the last few chapters hence coming across as rushed. It didn't help that Jessica, Lucy and Reby's lack of action (considering all the horrifying things they've seen) was incredibly unrealistic. I'd expected more of a reaction from Jessica since she's the only sane one.

The mystery behind the unpleasant dreams and awful smells was a bit of a letdown as too much was given away from the start. The were unconvincing and the amount of gore didn't quite deliver truly spine-chilling horror as there was never any subtlety or implication. That aside, the concept behind the motives and plans was well-thought-out. Plus, there were several well-written scenes that were wonderfully sinister as well as some funny, light-hearted moments. I liked the ending as it was aptly .

Overall, 'Blue Nightmares' was a quick and mildly enjoyable story serving up an abundance of bloodshed, sex and violence (not necessarily in that order).

I would like to say first thank you to the author for giving me the opportunity of reviewing this book.

Everyone to their own but this one was most definitely not for me. I couldn't connect with any of the characters. I found the storyline 'haphazard' for the want of a better descriptive word and after over 100 pages in nothing had yet happened other than overly descriptive passages which had no actual relevance to the "story" which I think was supposed to be about a gateway to hell? i.e. background details of each character, an inventory of what they bought on a shopping trip! and overly graphic sexual scenes - for me these were totally unnecessary and couldn't possibly add to the story in any way.

I was so bored with nothing actually happening other than sex scenes and the characters slipping in and out of hell and not knowing it I actually stopped reading the book two-thirds of the way in......sorry

We are back in familiar territory in this extreme horror novel. We find ourselves back in Raynham, Massachusetts. A quaint little town if your into blood, gore, violence, torture, murder, sex, and a couple of monsters roaming the streets. This is an extreme horror novel, you know when you pick up a book from this author you are in for a hell of a ride. And this book does not disappoint. I found this book to be a ode to H.P.Lovecraft. I think it has some commonalities to the movie “Dagon”. I really liked the Lovecraftian feel of this storyline. The world inside our world and the Gods, Demons and other Evil that lives there is fascinating.

The three main characters set out for a nice, calm, chill, summer vacation. They have however picked the wrong town for that.
The three girls are interesting characters. They start off as somewhat strangers but become closer friends as the story moves on, they seem sweet, kind and happy. That does not last long. The background storyline for the girls is very captivating and amusing. We see obvious drastic changes in each girl both by themselves and when they are together in a group.

The EVIL in this book is an enigma onto it’s self. The author has made it a living, breathing entity. A world inside our world. With his descriptive writing you are right there with these characters. You can smell the vile stench of rotting meat, dead bodies, feces, and blood. You know how the EVIL smells by the amazing words and descriptions that jump off the page. You feel the anger and anguish the EVIL radiates. You are also right there when the characters are questioning their own sanity, are they hallucinating the EVIL or not. The pure panic and horror the characters go through, you do too. In parts of this book I found my palms would be sweating and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. This was a disturbing book. I can’t wait to see if there will be other books set inside our world with this EVIL and the world it came from.

WARNING: There is graphic over-the-top violence, vicious, vulgar, and in some places disgusting language, plus raw sexual content, rape scenes, and beasteality. BEWARE, this book is not for everyone. Others who know what this book is about and may be familiar with this genre and author, you know what you are getting into, enjoy the ride.

52/100 (2018 Reading Challenge)

**Disclaimer** I was given this book for free to write a review. My first time, & I apologise to the author for the delay.

I read the book in odd stops & starts but when I was reading it, it was easy to get sucked in. But being read/to be read pile is extensive & well If I could juggle that many balls I would be the worlds greatest juggler.

This book is a good dose of what would probably be classed as ‘extreme’ horror. It can be quite brutal in places, but for the most part I am imaging, if your buying this ticket you probably have a rough idea of the show.

Being a horror fan since my early teens, (well before but adult horror anyway). These type of books kind of remind me of a ‘video nasty’ in book form. & if that’s what you are hoping to see well there is plenty to enjoy here. Which I like to do from time to time, Halloween days/October primarily for movies.

But hey for novels. The sun always goes down at sometime right?

No spoilers but the mystery was the best part for me. What is happening and why. To which I enjoyed the end, the final 25% tonight as the light had set for full creep out factor.

I was asked to read this book in exchange for a review - hmm well what can I say? The story as a whole was let’s say interesting.. some would maybe say a bit far fetched I’m only saying this as I hadn’t read anything about the book before starting! 3 main characters Jessica, Lucy & Reby all taking a well earned vacation. All 3 of them are very different girls and have very different opinions about life. I found this title a bit slow to start but then I found the descriptions of various things very long winded and overly descriptive (that’s my opinion) and felt the urge to skip these parts about half way through the book, I didn’t of course. Anyways - I’m not giving anything away about the storyline or what happens, other people don’t like reading spoilers. Not the best book I’ve read.. but I know what to expect from this author in the future. Thank you for allowing me to read your book!

I’ve been given 2 of the author’s books before as a copy to review and I’ve enjoyed both of them tremendously. They are “Wet Bones” and “Girls Are Not Smiling”. The style of writing was smooth, the ideas interesting and sometimes there was humour in it. All these led me to purchase this first book from Wol-vriey.

With no doubt I also enjoyed the style of writing in this book. It was smooth and gradual and the story builds up nicely. If you ask me I prefer this author over Jack Ketchum.

The only thing that made me give it a 3 is the horror content. I felt that the previous 2 I read was more horrifying and bizarre than this one. The climax was just ok. I half expected and was rooting for Jessica to escape but was pleasantly surprised the ending was the opposite.

Can’t wait to read his newest book “Mr Ugly”.

Disturbingly awesome!

As a request/invitation to read this from the author, I happily dove in & give it a 4 star rating.
If you love horror that is filled with fantastic imagery, a solid cast of particularly strange characters, an almost "Twilight Zone" surreal feel to it, then scoop up this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed the different story, the characters were an odd mix of people to group together but it worked! Genius ( a workaholic, a druggie/junkie & a nymphomaniac) coupled with a homely wife & her philandering husband, all set in a weird New England town. Oh and a super weird cult?! Fantastic fiction.

Well, that was different! Similar to Wol-vrieys' works in that there are strong female leads, but from there on it takes a departure from the out and out blood and gore we usually look forward to and instead it heads down to Creepy Town! A nice change of pace and by god was it good.

Seriously, this is one creepy book. It starts off by creeping you out and the creep factor increases steadily until your skin is crawling. But, unlike so many "Oh look, it's all turned out fine" creepy books, it stayed creepy right up until the end. I loved it!!!

You won't be disappointed, go on, buy it!!!

While Wol-vriey doesn't make it easy to label his work this or that genre, I guarantee you will never be bored reading his books. He has this unique ability to make your skin crawl one second and laugh out loud the next. I don't know how many times I've stopped and had to read a paragraph out loud to my husband when he gives me the eye for seeming to laugh randomly. I fully enjoy his unique blend of the disturbing and funny.
