Dead End Ghosts & Magic, Book 4 By: M. R. Forbes Narrated by: Jeff Hays I hate that this is the last book! I love this series but it ended as it should. I have been so satisfied with this series I am going to find another of this author's series and try those. This was excellent. Magic, humor, touch of romance, bringing the dead to life to do his work, lots of different creatures, lots of action, twists and turns, in-game action, and so much more. It has everything a fantasy and sci-fi lover could want. I love the characters, the witty remarks, the cleverness, the plots, and all the twists that happened. I will miss this. The narrator was wonderful and made me feel like I was part of the action. Great voices and sound effects. Well done!
Note: As this is Book 4 in the series, you really need to enjoy the previous books to get what’s at stake in this story.
Whew! Such a mix of feelings over this book. It was a great, wild ride but I am sad to say it looks like this is the end of the series. First, it was awesome to see Dani back in the mix. She is so good for Conor and just a great character herself. I love her snark and quick comebacks and her absolute certainty once she’s made a decision. There’s some unfinished business between her and Conor and that might break them apart. I was on the edge of my seat for part of the story waiting to see how things would be resolved between them.
Frank, the trogre, continues to be the heart of this little adventure group. Amos is a jerk with a noble cause (protect Dani). Prythi is also back and her cyber skills are put to the test. Then there is Ash, Karatona’s son. He’s a young dragon that owes his life to Conor.
On the other side, we have Samedi. He’s gathered so much power from tricking and cheating Conor. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Conor and his team try to stay one step ahead of Samedi… and sometimes failing. The woe! But Conor and crew rally each and every time. Even though there are zombies.
Death also enters the fray. Yep, that Death. Conor has to figure out what side he’s really playing for. There were so many ways for all to have been lost for our heroes. I was caught up for the entire story! I especially liked Forbes’s take on the Morrigan in this tale, even if the trio create a serious headache for Conor.
The ending was a deliciously tense bit! Conor has been dying for years from cancer but I really didn’t know how things would fall out for him. I also feared for his companions. Even throughout the action, there’s bits of humor tucked in everywhere. Ash and pixies and all of Amos’s comments! Snort laugh! The final ending was very fitting. Perhaps we will see Conor again some day but if this is all we get, it’s been a worthy series. 5/5 stars.
I received a free copy of this audiobook.
Narration: Jeff Hays has done this series justice! He has a great, rough voice for Conor. I also love his voice for Amos, who is sarcastic or dissatisfied or making lewd comments all the time. All his female voices are feminine (he does a great job with them) and I loved having Dani back. He went the extra mile with the ultra-creepy voice for Samedi. There’s quite the range of emotions in this book, especially for Conor and Hays did a great job performing those emotions. 5/5 stars.
The pacing is a bit off. I feel like we get almost no downtime to let these characters interact. The entire book we're teased with a conversation between Conor and Dannie that never really happens. There's also am overuse of teleportation and twist solutions. The ultimate way the main problem is "solved" is fine and clever, I would have loved to know about it ahead of time and see how it was going to be pulled off. Instead it just gets dropped on us in the last pages.
I also feel like we get to see Conor do less and less necromancy as the series went on. Eventually it's just a general-use magic that always seems to be what the situation called for, opening doors, moving rocks, breaking metal, as a shield, as a generic damaging spell, etc. It would have been cool to see Conor have to raise someone against their will and use them to finish a job, and see what the other characters thought of it, just some cool use of actual necromancy to explore it as a concept more. Basically I miss Evan.
Anyway it was still a fun ride and if there was another book in this universe I'd buy it for sure.

This series was a pleasure. The suspense in this book lasted until the last page. The necromancy continued to evolve and educate us in a not so common type of magic. A consistently flawed main character continued to disappoint himself and not the reader. Hard choices made and avoided keeps you on the fence about becoming loyal to him. It also keeps you objective and curious about how you feel regarding his decisions or lack there of. I learned about myself by taking the ride for the whole series. Creative magic and detailed revelations one element at a time of how it works and why it works. I hope to enjoy the world created here again some day. Thank you to the author.
Final book! Got to say, this was seriously a trip. I thought about rounding up to four stars for this one, but honestly it still was roughly a 3 star experience overall. I did feel like the whole cast together really balanced out the more unpleasant elements of certain characters, but it was still a bit rough around the edges and formulaic. Also, sometimes too repetitive.
I didn't love the ending. I think it was a touch abrupt and a bit strange. I'm not entirely sure what they were getting at with the conclusion, but I can make some guesses. It'd been interesting if the end was expanded a little, but for the most part I was satisfied with how everything turned out.
I'm going to read the remaining short stories included in the collection and then review the entire collection.
Or maybe not end. But new beginning. I would enjoy Conor as death. If I have a complaint it’s that I read a lot and had forgotten large parts of the story since reading the last book over a year ago. Or felt it blend in with other similar books. The author could have gave us a better refresher in the first few chapters.
Yes. Totally. This entry wraps up the series quite nicely... our as nicely as this series can. I mean, it's about a necromancer with terminal lung cancer. But the action is non-stop and clearly written, and every character gets exposition and growth. Loved the series, loved the world, and will miss it!
Dead End was GREAT! In fact I loved them ALL!!! All four books in the series, but this 4th book was the most satisfying. I absolutely lovelovelove it when the bad guys get it. Take that! Thanks for a great read M R Forbes! Only took me 2 days but only cuz I was sick and getting better ... still blew through them way too fast though.
I have read this series since the beginning and it had a lot of ground to cover in the last book, but it was worth the wait! I am thrilled at how this final book pulled through.
What a great ending this book was to a brilliant series from M R Forbes. I thoroughly enjoyed to see the culmination of the trials and tribulations of Connor Night and friends. A great series...
The series started slow, but i persevered and came to enjoy the following books. Terminating in 'Dead End', which brought a satisfying end to the series. It just shows that perseverance can be rewarded.
Loved the series as a whole. Really good characters that were mostly well written. Not sure how I feel about the very end because I was hoping for a different turn, but very good overall.
