This was my first time reading something from Cynthia Eden and I’m wondering why it’s taken me so long. I was utterly spellbound from start to finish. I was wrapped up not only in the stories of the heroes, the brave men and women of the BAU of the FBI, but I was also stuck in the minds of the killers. This story was bold and refreshingly unique and you better believe I’ll be diving into more of these books!
“Because predators didn’t always walk on four legs. The most dangerous predator...he walked on two.”
Macey, once a doctor doing residency, fell victim to a vicious serial killer who was operating right under her nose. After escaping certain death, she devotes her life to hunting predators just like him. As a vital member to the BAU, she’s caught and put away several murderers but hasn’t really gotten over her own terror. Bowen, also a member of the BAU, secretly (not so secretly) has feelings for Macey. He admires and respects her and wants nothing more than to protect her from any more harm. A body shows up, linked to Macey’s past, and the unit flies into action. But it doesn’t end there. Someone else is hunting serial killers and not only is he leaving them bodies to find, he’s taunting them. Can Bowen and Macey catch a killer before he catches them?
I knew exactly who I was choosing when I went to you last night. - Macey
Reading Into The Night was like watching an episode of Criminal Minds, which happens to be one of my favorite shows, so to say I was thrilled would be an understatement. The plot was fast-paced, thrilling, and intense. I had no clue who was who until the end. Every time I thought “Oh it’s so and so,” I was thrown for a loop. I love when an author keeps me guessing. With all of the suspenseful moments and the romance and feels that were developing between Bowen and Macey, there was never a dull moment. Bodies just kept piling up and I was on the edge of my seat waiting for these people to figure it out!
If you’re a fan of romantic suspense with a touch of psychological thriller, you’re going to love this!!
Release Date: December 26, 2017 Genre: Romantic Suspense POV: Multiple - 3rd person Heat: 3.5 out of 5 Series/Standalone: Standalone - Book #3 of the Killer Instinct series with character crossover
Bowen and Macey are partners in Samantha Dark’s unique FBI profiling division, and so even though they’re attracted to each other they’ve kept their relationship professional. That’s about to change when Macey’s dark past becomes their latest case. Emotions that Macey’s been able to lock down and control come churning up and she turns to Bowen for comfort and oblivion, giving in to that powerful sexual pull between them.
Bowen’s crazy about Macey, but his own dark past and Macey’s reaction has held him back from revealing his feelings. However, he’s not about to refuse her offer of sex with no-strings now even if he wants more. And with the new threat, a vigilante killer who knows both Macey and Bowen’s past, he’s grabbing on and holding her tight.
This killer is a few steps ahead of Macey and Bowen, hunting notorious killers while taunting them. It seems he’s focused his sinister attention on them for some unknown reason. They both struggle with a dark past, the reason they were invited to be on Samantha’s profiling team is because they’ve both had personal experience with serial killers. Macey was a friend, colleague, and then victim of “The Doctor”. She barely managed to get away with her life, while “The Doctor” got away to hunt more. Bowen’s link to a serial killer is revealed as the story progresses, and each of their tales figure into this story.
While I did figure out a couple of things, there were quite a few surprises and twists in this installment. I was on the edge of my seat and enjoyed every minute! Bowen and Macey’s romance was a thrill as well; definite sparks and chemistry, everything I hoped it would be! A copy was kindly provided by HQN via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
She felt as if she’d shattered into a million pieces and then been put together all wrong.
I just want to fall asleep in your arms and know that, for a few moments, I’m safe. Because that’s what you are to me, Bowen… You’re my safety in a storm.
My Review:
I fell right into this intense and intriguing story during its extremely powerful and harrowing prologue. I felt gripped by my hair and the tension in my neck did not relent until the last chapter. This was my first time reading Cynthia Eden and had no idea what to expect, I now expect to be reading her crafty tales quite often. The premise was interesting and the writing was well paced, wily, and compelling. Although the FBI didn’t like the idea of a killer besting them and taunting them with it, I rather fancied the idea of a killer killing off loathsome predators and wondered – why not let him be - until I realized there was collateral damage to innocents as well since killers aren’t all that discriminating… silly me for not thinking that through. And in the midst of all that hunting and chasing and slicing and dicing, a sweet and steamy love story blossomed – oh yeah… I liked that… I really like that a lot.
I sometimes feel for authors who love writing murder mysteries, since these perennially suffer from the inability to hold their readers’ interest, particularly when the cases meld into one another and they stop standing out, even with excellent writing and atmosphere-creation. Throw some romantic suspense in it and the whole story becomes electrified, but that problem of keeping things fresh remains.
Cynthia Eden’s ‘Killer Instinct’ series is strange one that keeps going under the radar for me, though it really deserves more than a second look. Perhaps this is a strange observation but I think for most of the books in this series, the characters and plots tended to blur into an interchangeable ball of mystery, murder and gore for me.
‘Into the Night’ did feel a tad bit too similar to the point where I couldn’t really distinguish each protagonist from another because all of them had their own secrets, worked for the FBI and turned dirty-talking alphas or wanting, sex-starved women in bed. Yet I did like Bowen and Macey, as I did the other couples (though they weren’t memorable enough to leave their own indelible stamp on me) so that was some conflict for me right there as a RS addict.
Thankfully Eden does deliver her twists, knowing full well that a murder mystery isn’t just a straight path leading to the whodunnit moment and that kept me entertained throughout, as did the surprisingly fast switch of relationship between Bowen and Macey. The mystery branches out into something more complex as the story goes on and with a few cases of the hunter getting hunted type of revelations, I got more and more invested as the pages kept turning. There are some parts where disbelief must clearly be suspended—it did get loopy when it was revealed—but by and large, there were hints that made it not too surprising at the end.
‘Into the Night’ isn’t a bad read and I’m going to say this up front. But it’s fatigue that’s setting in on my part, and I’m going with the been there, done that and read that line because it’s true. Like someone with a need of another, bigger and craftier fix, I think I’m jaded when it comes to Eden’s brand of RS (especially the serial killer cases because I've read so many of Eden's books) unless there’s something revolutionary in the works to come.
“Because predators didn’t always walk on four legs. The most dangerous predator...he walked on two.”
Ah ah ahhhhhhh! Mal terminei e já estou com saudade desse povo! Eu quero maisssssssssssss!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
“You’ve always been the one I chose.”
Eu adooooro demais essa série, os personagens, a narrativa... TUDO!!!!❤️❤️❤️ E pra variar, devorei esse livro! O enredo me prendeu demais! Amei rever Samantha & Tucker!!!
The book cover is finally representative of the lead! FINALLY!
I am probably more excited than is healthy, but Cynthia Eden's Killer Instinct series is thisclose to my ideal romantic suspense series. Smart, riveting, and sexy, it features complex and intriguing characters and a serious creep factor that will keep devotees of serial killer thrillers engaged. Simply put, they are good books. And I want good covers for good books, you know?
All has been quite on the series front since January 2018, and all of the members of Samantha Dark's elite FBI profiling unit have found love and peace (well, as close to peace as these tortured souls can get). So while I assume that the series has concluded for good, I also hope that Eden revisits the subject matter in another series. She did good - really good - here.
Read for SBTB October - December 2018 Quarterly Challenge: The final book in the series.
I’m a longtime fan of Eden’s work; but even I am disappointed in a story on occasion. The premise here is good, a serial killer targeting serial killers; but somehow it just didn’t work for me. For one thing, I’ve been experiencing psychological serial killer overkill lately. It’s like that’s the only crime that the FBI investigates in the world of RS books. Then there is the trope of the killer targeting the person investigating the crime. I don’t care for that, and it’s also been overused in the books I’ve read lately.
Too many things that happened were far too contrived and convenient, just to move the plotline in the right direction. Sloppy writing overall. Last but not least, the sex. It started too early, and the sex scenes overpowered the book. The story would just stop dead still for the longest time for yet another sex scene. Honestly, when do these oversexed energizer bunny agents get any real work done? Towards the end, the book turned into a huge potboiler of excess, a soap opera of incompetent and unprofessional FBI agents. Disappointing and frustrating read from an author who can do so much better
Macey Night is an FBI agent who survived a serial killer. He was a coworker, a friend, and a man obsessed with killing. “For science” because of course he had a higher calling.
When Macey escaped from him, he escaped as well. But he may have popped back up on the grid, and Macey and her partner Bowen are going after him. Years of nightmares and fear culminating to the point where they have found him. And when they arrive? Someone has beaten them to him.
While Macey and Bowen are tracking down who beat them to their serial killer, another tip comes in leading them to another serial killer on the FBI’s list. And then…yet again, someone killed him before they could arrest him. It’s as if someone is taunting them by finding their criminals first.
As the cases progress, it becomes more and more personal. With a possible serial killer targeting other serial killers, and one who always seems to be one step ahead of the FBI at that, Macey and Bowen start looking a little closer to home for their suspect. And things begin to get even more dangerous.
Meanwhile, Macey and Bowen are getting closer to each other, and when their nights heat up, their days are cooling off. Their trail on the killer goes cold. Macey is cold to Bowen. How can they start a relationship under those kinds of circumstances?
I feel like Bowen was patient, caring, and understanding with Macey. He’d wanted her for so long, but he wanted her to come to him. He didn’t want to pressure her. And when she did come to him, they combusted.
Macey for her part really wants Bowen, but she feels she’s been taken apart and put back together wrong, and doesn’t want to drop her mess at Bowen’s feet. It takes her a long time to understand he wants her, and that love is sometimes messy, and that’s okay.
I enjoyed their romance, and I really got caught up in their story. The killer was a surprise to me, and the whole plot was super intense and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
With her blend of thriller/romantic suspense, Cynthia Eden writes the most intense serial killers and the hottest lovers out there.
The survivor of a vicious attack, FBI agent Macey Night has dedicated her life to protecting the innocent from serial killers. Her teammate, agent Bowen Murphy, is just as determined to hunt down the monsters. Their latest case takes them into the Smokey Mountains in search of a vigilante with a disturbing interest in both Macey and Bowen's pasts.
Series note:This is the 3rd and finalKiller Instincts book. While characters from the previous installments appear, it is possible to read this as a standalone.
Macey and Bowenare both likable characters with compelling backstories. Their partners-in-love romance is excellent, and their intense chemistry is only enhanced by the "forbidden" feel of their relationship.
The suspense plot revolving around a serial killer targeting other killers is intriguing with numerous twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. While everything is eventually explained, some aspects are quite convoluted.
Overall, this is an entertaining and satisfying end to the series.
I love Cynthia Eden's romantic suspense books. She is a very good suspense writer and can keep the reader on their toes guessing and wondering what will happen next. It's only been one or two books where I figured out the killer. This one will keep you guessing and have you hoping you are wrong about the killer. :)
The romance was well done too but I've enjoyed better from her. Great read!
Quotes & Faves:
♥ “You’re mine, Macey.” His words had never seemed rougher or more possessive.
♥ “I want to sleep with you.” A faint smile curved her lips, but the smile never reached her eyes. “This time, I’m not here asking you to fuck me. I just want to fall asleep in your arms and know that, for a few moments, I’m safe. Because that’s what you are to me, Bowen.” Her smile had faded. “You’re my safety in a storm.”
Another twisting story about FBI profilers who have all been brought together due to their own pasts that connected them in some way to serial killers. Some are victims whilst others on the team are predators but all now share a burning desire for justice. Macey survived the diabolical 'The Doctor'and hoped he was dead but now it appears he is once again practicing his nefarious tortures . As she knows his opus operandi only too well Macey is sent to Gatlingburgh with her partner Bowen to investigate and discover if it is actually her nemesis or a copycat killer. This was never predictable and threw out all manner of conundrums as the author wove her story of revenge and a twisted sense of justice. It was fun seeing characters from previous books but I hasten to reassure other readers that I felt it worked as a standalone story. Amidst the madness and murder we also get a satisfying and passionate romance. For me though when at the end Bowen mentioned that Macey already had his heart it made me smile as yes it's very much a happy ending and there's nothing wrong with that! This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Into the Night continue the stories of a team of special FBI profilers. Each book focuses on a different crime and a different couple so they are stand alones. However, if you like one book, you will enjoy them all! Imagine Criminal Minds and add in 2 of the agents in a steamy romance and you have the Killer instincts series!
All the agents have some tie to a serial killer-previous boyfriend, family member, victim. In this case Macey is the only surviving victim of 'The Doctor'. When it looks like he has resurfaced, Macey and her partner Bowen rush to NC to look into it. However, they quickly realize there is a LOT more going on.
The story takes place mostly in the Smokey Mountains and Gatlinburg, TN. They mention a specific trail and mountain and I just had to look it up. I have a need to see things on a map.
So, this gives you an idea of the trail they begin to investigate (specifically the Rainbow Falls trail up to Mount Le Conte). It doesn't really matter, but if you are a visual person like me, you will enjoy being able to see a map of the place they are talking about!
Back to the story! Macey and Bowen are on the hunt for a copycat killer who has killed 2 serial killers the FBI was hunting (wow-that is a lot of killers in one sentence!). The action really does read like a TV show, and if you enjoy these types of tropes, you will really gobble up the story. The romance between Macey and Bowen starts as a 'just this once' kind of thing, then it becomes a secret romance because they don't want to let anyone in the FBI know. So, basically, its just sex at night, business as usual by day. That always works out, right? ;)
What I have enjoyed about all the books in the series is they aren't predictable. You keep wondering who the villain is, then once its revealed, you wonder how he/she will be caught, then you wonder if its really over! Eden is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors because her books always keep me on my toes!

Another great suspenseful mystery in this series. Twists and turns, romance, sex, and many who dunnit characters to keep the reader guessing. I never figured it out until very near the last page.
Great read!
In Cynthia Eden's Into the Night, the third installment in the Killer Instinct romantic suspense series, this twisted tale will make your head spin and give you whiplash in the ending. For FBI Agent Macey Night, she was the only survivor of Dr. Daniel Haddox's twisted crimes and lived to tell about it. Now as an agent for Agent Samantha Dark's profiler team, it would take her wits and her determination to deal with the most serial crimes. To help her fight the pain from the past, she became involved with her partner, Bowen Murphy, which was risky and against protocol. Between the two of them, they were on the hunt for Haddox and discovered his dead body with nails in his eyes. Now someone kept taunting them, especially Bowen, that he was the one who found him and took care of business. To prove his while, he was ahead of them every step of the way, until they've tracked down the next victim, a serial pyromaniac and arsonist. With someone watching their every move in the midst, they thought they would take this perp down until he went after a cop and later would go after them. For Macey and Bowen, things do heat up between them with a red-hot love for wanting each other. But when they're caught in the killer's crossfire, things change and put them in a life and death position... when they discover who was response with a shocking twist or two in the end that would leave you speechless.
There are certain books that you read that seem to take you awhile to get into, and then there are those you jump right in and seconds (only feels that way) later you are done with them. Into to the Night is one of those you jump right in and you are done in seconds. (again, only feels that way)
I've been waiting for this book because I was drawn to Bowen. There was just something about him that I needed to know more about. After reading Into the Night I knew why he drew me to him.
The man has layers. He's tough, strong, sweet, funny, loyal, mega scary and is willing to die for those he loves. In this case it's Macey he's willing to lose his life for. Throughout the book you realize just how much he loves her and it makes your heart squeeze.
I'm afraid that poor Macey was very busy hiding her emotions so it takes her a while to realize how she feels about him.
I will admit that I loved the story line. This one kept me wondering till the end. Every time I thought I knew who was who, I was totally wrong or I was right but I didn't know it. Confusing I know. I just don't want to give anything away that will ruin it for you. The funny thing for me is that as long as I have strong, likable characters a week story line is okay, but I don't care how strong the story line is, if I don't like the characters that's it for me. This had both! I can't tell you how happy that made me.
Into the Night is one of those books that I would recommend even if you don't read the rest of the series or anything by Cynthia Eden. This is big for me because I'm a read in order type of person. That's how good this one is for me. Now saying that I hope you'll take the time to read the whole series because I think you'll enjoy them all. Plus you'll really get to know the characters better.
This is Cynthia Eden at her best.. A total page turner with a killer that stayed many steps ahead as he not only profiled his victims but also the team hunting him.
Interesting twist that a vigilante serial killer was killing serial killers. Definitely got your fill of twisted through out this book. And even though some things were obvious there were twist a plenty that kept you on your toes at guessing what was going on.
One of the things I've liked about all of these books is finding out how each of the profilers lives were touched by a serial killer in their pasts – which was a requirement to be on the special FBI team. Samantha Dark's history held the top spot until this book. Macey's was pretty twisted and how that carried over into present day was another thing that kept you turning the pages..
Rowan and Macey also tied with Blake and Samantha as being my favorite couple in the series. Rowan was so dark and broody and alpha with his own past with a killer that still haunts him today.
Book three of Cynthia Eden's Killer Instinct series. It a fantastic series about a department inside the the FBI that tracks down serial killers, each agent involved has had an up close and personal encounter with one. The lead in this group Samantha Dark was dating one, another member's brother was one, in this book Macey Night was the lone survivor of serial killer who was a colleague and friend. Even though she gave him a life threatening wound and the authorities presumed him dead Macey never stopped believing that he survived and never stopped looking for him; and now she thinks she found him. Bowen Murphy is Macey's partner and has since the beginning loved her, he has managed to keep his desires at bay because of her past and because they are partners but this cases pushes him to his breaking point and everything comes out, even his own torrid past.
The premise of this one is very similar to that of one of her other book where the serial killer is focusing on other serial killers, but that is where the similarities end. The "Profiler" has manipulated everything from the beginning with an ultimate goal, Bowen and Macey are trying to get to the bottom of it before he kills again. But it's not easy when they come across red herrings and plenty of twists and turns along the way.
I love Cynthia Eden's characters they are all so wonderfully flawed and relatable it is easy to empathize and connect with them. The suspense is exactly how I like it fast paced, dark, and keeps you on edge the entire time. I was enjoying the story so much I forgot to make a prediction as to who the bad guy was. The romance is hot and heavy and Bowen is wooo, definitely one of my favorites from Cynthia Eden. Overall, it's another winner for me.
Dr. Macey Night came close to being a serial killer's victim - targeted for her unusual, two different colored eyes - and later joined the FBI to find the monster who terrorized her. Can she do it before she becomes prey again? Here is a link to my review:
The plot of this book was a bit twisted and going in every way but it was fun trying to understand what the hell was going on. As usual great characters, especially the women who are always strong. The men seems a bit made in the same clothes yet their past are interesting too.
Even if i guessed pretty quickly who might be the killer, i was still totally in the book because the ending is always a surprise between how and why !
A good serie with a good plot and heavy atmosphere, like a good thriller. The romance was a bit forced IMO though.
I read book two, I have yet to read book one, but it's OK because while this is book three in the series, it's a stand alone. You'll be fine if you jump in right here! In this book we start with Macey Night, strapped to a table about to be the next victim of her co-worker who is a bizarre serial killer. Fast forward a few years and Macey has quit her job as a doctor and has started a career in the FBI, determined to find her attacker and bring him to justice. She gets a lead on his whereabouts and sets out, with her partner Bowen Murphy, to hopefully catch him before he kills anyone else.
Except they get there and he's dead. Bodies are piling up, serial killers who have been on the run for years are suddenly being caught by The "Profiler" and it seems he knows more about Macey and Bowen than anyone else. They quickly realize that they are the center of this bizarre crime saga and are racing to piece everything together and bring this person to justice. Nothing is as it seems and nobody can be trusted.
I LOVED THIS BOOK. I finished it in a day and a half, and while I kind of had a guess (and was right) the accomplices and the larger story? Had no clue. That came out of nowhere but suddenly everything lined right up when I was worried we'd be left with loose ends. The ending is perfect, the story grabs you immediately, and Cynthia Eden is a writer that knows what a reader wants- a story that never dulls and is always moving forward. I cannot get enough of these books!

What happens when the FBI profiler becomes the profiled target of a killer? That is the question in Into the Night by Cynthia Eden. I felt paranoid but how realistic these situations seemed. I did not feel safe at all while reading this book.
The "Profiler", a murderer that profiles his victims has set his sights on the FBI agents that are searching for him. Macey Night wants to catch this killer more than anyone. He brings her worst fears to the surface and she will not feel safe until he is no longer a threat.
Agent Bowen Murphy attempts to help her overcome her fear and not only capture this killer, but to gain a peace and acceptance of life for Macey. How long will this killer be able to get away with his crime spree? And even if the killer is captured, will Macey be able to get past her fears?
A great read, I was glued to the book until the final page. Macey Night’s character is similar to myself, so in that I was drawn in even more. I wanted her to be able to overcome her fears, because if she could I felt that I would be able to do so myself. Getting to the end of the book and reaching the conclusion was exhilarating, even though the ending was a bit unexpected. I am very happy to have read this book. Great read for anyone who is interested in romance and mystery. Four stars.
I must confess the longer that Cynthia Eden writes romantic suspense the more I fall in love with her writing. She always has strong and smart heroines and Macey is no exception. Macey started out as a Dr. and when attacked she decided to be an FBI agent and help others that way. She has issues, but who wouldn't when they were targeted by a serial killer who she happened to know and work with. She's determined that no-one will ever get the better of her again. And she is also resolute in her single-mindedness to stop the killers.
Bowen is a strong, smart, and sexy. And ooh lala the sparks that he and Macey put off. They could start a forest fire. Unfortunately Macey doesn't want to get involved with her partner. But when things happen to make Macey and Bowen think that the man who attacked her has surfaced again, they start the hunt. Unfortunately, they find out that is not entirely accurate. And when serials start turning up dead then things start heating up fast in the case and in their love life also.
I will say that the I figured out the bad guy fairly quickly but then started second guessing almost as quickly. She got me lol. I love that she's beginning to outsmart me as to who the villains. are. I love her books and I give this one 5 stars. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Suspenseful and riveting, Into the Night was a thrilling romantic suspense story filled with many twists and turns. With Eden's signature mind for twisted characters and their reigns of terror, readers will not only fall in love with Bowen and Macey's fierce connection with one another, but also their fast-paced fall into a serial killer's trap that is seemingly both personal and highly skilled.
In a series where each novel can stand completely on its own, there's nothing repetitive about the characters or the motives behind their actions, leaving readers to be completely captivated with something new and fresh with each one. And somehow Eden keeps finding new ways to bring about death, danger, and design, thrusting her characters into untried depths of both hot romance and deadly situations. The strength and warrior spirit of Macey, a survivor of a horrible ordeal, was always present, and her sharp mind was clear, but conscious of what was at stake. She was the heart to Bowen's protective capabilities, but his ability to love was just as fierce. Both characters meshed so well in both personal and professional endeavors that it was seamless to believe their fall.
Into the Night was an edge-of-your-seat read, one that kept me guessing until the very end. It was one thing after another--turning the preformed ideas I cultivated with the evidence given and twisted everything on its head--leaving me to throw away all of my predictions to guess again, and that's the marker of a great suspense novel. The romance was just an extra topping that rounded out the story. I'm already looking forward to what's next in this series, hoping there will be more to come.
**Received an early copy; this had no bearing on my opinions**
Phew--another edge-of-your-seat read in this series!
Into the Night is a romantic suspense with many twists and turns...and then a few more twists thrown in, just for good measure. I lost track of how many side characters gave me creepy vibes (but yay, I was right about two of those creepy-vibe-givers, at least partially!) and whoa, so. Many. Murders. (and abductions. Those numbers were right up there too.) Seriously, this book was pretty relentless.
I'm not sure when Macey and Bowen even had time to develop a relationship--though somehow they managed. ;)
Overall I really enjoyed reading this. Though the ending did have a bit of a going-off-the-rails feel to it, ultimately it was en entertaining read that kept me firmly sitting on the very edge of my seat throughout.
Fingers crossed that there is more to come!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
