Love comes with a price – especially among the undead.

Sunny Martin is on the run from a monster–the monster within herself. Since the night she was drained of her blood and left to die, she has lived alone and in fear of the beast and its violent urges, always on the move.

When a tumultuous affair with the mysterious leader of The Chosen ends in betrayal and murder, Sunny finds herself on the run once again. Heartbroken, she struggles with her desire to return to Nicolas, only to realize that sometimes you can never go back.

In the ensuing days, Sunny must face the death of someone she loves, and face the love of someone she fears—an outlaw Chosen even more dangerous than the one who broke her heart.

Roh Morgon discovered the magic in stories at an early age, both in books and the ones she made up in her head. As a child growing up in a remote Southern California canyon, she explored the wild hills barefoot with her brothers and rode her horse bareback at top speed. A wicked youth spent hitchhiking across the West and perched on the backs of Harleys eventually gave way to soccer mom duties and full-time college studies—at the same time. In her spare moments, she learned how to herd cattle, swordfight, and plant an arrow or a knife in a target—not necessarily at the same time.

Her years spent in the lofty mountains of Colorado and the stark plains of Wyoming, the red canyons of central Arizona and the rolling hills of California, provide some of the diverse stages upon which her characters re-enact their lives.

She’s best known for her vampire series which includes Watcher: Book I of The Chosen, the 1840s historical horror novella, The Last Trace, and The Games Monsters Play. Her next novel, Runner: Book II of The Chosen, will be released in late 2017.

Roh currently shares her home in the Sierra Nevada foothills with three mustang horses, two crazy herding dogs, and a very patient husband who reminds her of the need to eat and sleep. She writes fantasy and urban fantasy for middle grade, young adult, and adult readers.

This would have been 5 star except that it seems book 3 is never going to be written.

Just as in Watcher, it is difficult to tag this novel with a specific Genre. I’ll go with urban fantasy. Although, one could probably go with Mystery. Or romance, and so on and so on.

Roh Morgon has written the second novel in the Chosen series and given us more of Sunny. This is well written, powerful, suspenseful and full of heart-pounding drama.

Story line: (Contains spoilers).

Sunny, traumatized by her actions at the end of “Watcher”, flees Nicolas, and heads for the mountains in an attempt to get as much distance as possible between herself and the man she can’t seem to take her mind from.

On the way she meets a troubled and abused teenage girl and the two strike up a friendship. Although it doesn’t totally help cleanse Sunny of her guilt and shame, it does give her something else to think about. She sets herself to helping Sandy (The teenager) obtain a future. They become very close. So close, that Sunny tells Sandy about her secret. Sunny’s a vampire. Not your standard run of the mill vampire. A vampire that only feeds on animals.

Tragedy strikes and Sandy makes Sunny promise to contact her daughter. Now Morgon has us join Sunny as she returns to Nicolas, only to find out he has disappeared. Her ensuing search takes her back to California, where she keeps her promise to Sandy, and expands her search for Nicolas, as well. The search doesn’t go as planned and the battle of wills begins between herself and a group of renegade Chosen.

A dynamic page turner.

A pacy vampire story
Runner continues the story of Sunny, a woman whose life was turned upside down when she was attacked and changed into a Vampire. I enjoyed book two much more than book one, which was more focused on how Sunny adapts (or not) to her way of life. This book is much faster, feels a bit shorter as well as I read it in one sitting. It introduces some well-developed characters who tug at your heart strings.
This book is well written, easy to read and very enjoyable. Sunny realises she may have made a terrible mistake and has to figure out how to resolve it. The book does end on a bit of cliffhanger, and you’ll need to read book three Seeker to get a resolution to the story, and I can’t wait!
This series although started a bit slow, is certainly picking up the pace and I can’t wait to see how Sunny finally accepts her new life and what she decides to do with it.

wonderful series

Omg love all three books. I cannot believe the last one was 2017 and I’m just reading it now in 2025 which kind of weary me because if it’s been that long, I’m not sure the next one’s gonna actually come out which is sad cause it’s a great series and I’d love to see what happens between Sunny and Nicholas and Taz. Wow can’t believe it’s been that long since the book was put out and it’s still not a number four yet hopefully soon who knows I hate it when authors do that though because it makes you forget about the book like if it takes so many years before the next one comes but it’s a wonderful series. Wonderful read leave you hanging side there’s not more to read.

Glorious

I absolutely loved book II who would have thought I would ball my eyes out over a vampire book. There are so many twist and turns so much emotional rollercoaster trips that I couldn't catch a breath. This author truly has a gift of writing and look forward to book III and looking into other books she has written

So many twists and turns make this a very compelling continuation of Sunny’s story! In trying to avoid her major fear of becoming a monster for real, Sunny leaves the life she is starting to build and has to start over once again. It is so heartbreaking to see everything this troubled and struggling character is going through, but it’s also so wonderful to see and cheer her successes.

The introduction of Taz and his crew bring lots of new problems and also move along Sunny’s personal growth. I’m so ready for the next one!
