I'm not rating it because I don't think it was bad but poetry is very hit or miss with me and I didn't feel it today. I hope to reread it in the future and have my feelings changed because I really liked the concept.

So far my favourite was 'Pirate thinks of Mermaid'.

thinks
her love on my lips gentle & fluttering
softly // my love jasmine white & lychee silver
unspooling in her palms an opening
to the light

- “girl in front of me but not rlly girl at all //
more shark than girl & more pirate than girl w/ a hunger in ur eyes
that flushes my heart thru to the tips of my toes”
- Ocean Deep, Darshana Suresh.

Ocean deep is a beautiful poetry collection about the love that develops between and a pirate and the mermaid who saves her. Not to be that person- but these poems make up a wonderful story that’s better than the Little Mermaid. Is it because it’s sapphic?

Possibly, but I said what I said.

Overall: This may be short but the poems were gorgeous and I highly recommend.

I say hold your breath and you say I have
since I saw you

I don't know if there will ever come a day where I can read a description like 'a pirate and her mermaid love' and not be hooked right away (pun wasn't actually intended).
At least today wasn't that day.

This is a really lovely collection with a just amazing theme.
I love that the poems are gentle and beautiful on their own, but still tell a coherent story when they're put together like they are in this collection.
And I also love that we get to know their names in the Afterword: Malina and Asha. Beautiful.

I may be a little biased on this one, but I think Ocean Deep is definitely a chapbook worth checking out, maybe? It's a collection that I'm incredibly proud of, and has to be one of my favourite works to date. I hope you find reading it to be as gentle and warming as I felt when writing it, and more than anything, I hope my two girls bring you somewhere homely and welcoming.

I'm not sure how else to say this so here goes: Darshana Suresh makes beautiful into something tangible I can almost touch.

A lovely chapbook full of warmth and yearning.

for something unforgiving
& something brimming with forgiveness too"

I found this chapbook and author through good fortune and my love of pirates and mermaids, and what a great first impression. Ocean Deep is so sweet and lovely, with so many wonderful details and lines, it's hard to pick what to call attention to in this review without quoting half the book. The mermaid's fascination with the back of the pirate's knees? The pirate's easy association of the shark- and pirate-like mermaid with safety? The entirety of "Scar-let and Honey Soothed"? The whole book?? Really, it's a delightful read, and I knew by the end of "Mermaid & Other Shooting Stars" that this one would go on my favorites shelf.

This e-book was short but confusing and pretentious. I found it hard sometimes to decern which character was thinking/speaking which poem. I'd recommend reading the author's note first. However, I do like poems that tell stories and thought it was warm and expressive.

Mermaids, pirates, and poetry? C'mon, this was 100% going to be five stars for me.

(But really, this is incredible even if you're not obsessed with pirates the way I am. Go download it for free and taste the lychee.)

favorite poem:
pirate thinks of mermaid
thinks

Just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t connect to any of the poems and I felt very bored as I was reading through.

Lo he leído, pero sinceramente no estoy segura de saber cómo me siento con esta mini-colección de poesia.
