The Valens Legacy #3

Over Our Heads

Rate this book
Sean's still up to his neck in trouble, but at least he's finally found an example of his father's work, along with all of his notes. Now all Sean has to do is figure out not only how to reproduce his father's greatest achievement, but to solve the one problem his father wasn't able to. Holed up in a cold war era bomb shelter, all Sean wants to do now is keep his head down and his family safe, while he untangles this latest problem. Like it or not however, Sean has set events in motion that will change the future for all of the mages and supernatural beings involved, should he prove successful. While many may welcome these changes and the freedom it will bring them, some of the more powerful councils will most definitely not. “Over Our Head” contains explicit sexuality, nudity, violence, bad language, attempted murder, actual murder, self-defense, pro-active self-defense, destruction of private property, vandalism, breaking and entering, tantric magic, polyamory, mayhem, gratuitous sex and violence, an opportunistic goblin, and a little girl who knows all about guilt trips.

I'm new to the Harem / LitRPG thing (If I'd known more about LitRPG when I wrote Shadow, I might have incorporated more elements of that into it).
I have a FT job, so I work on this when I can. Hopefully the next one will be even better.

This is a combination review of the entire 17+ book series as I binged the entire The Valens Legacy over the about a month.

The Positives:
- The writing is really good. Often when I binge an author things like their crutch words become constant irritants that didn't happen here.
- Stryvant doesn't mess around. The plot never really stops or meanders, each story having important events that carry the narrative forward.
- There's two maybe three arcs in this series but each flow one into another smoothly so it all seams like a natural progression.
- All the arcs are entertaining and engaging I always wanted to know what would happen next or figure out the mystery.
- The Main character rides the line of being a Gary Stu never really crosses that line.
- Functional magic system and cohesive world.

The Negatives:
- The pervasive fetish portions. Even during serious portions Stryvant will often break my immersion with sexual talk or fetishes.
- Repetitive sex and romance. It does get better later in the series, but since Stryvant's fetishes don't change over the course of the book neither do these scenes. I started skipping them, but he'd often stick important plot points in the middle of them.
- The women characters tend to be on the bland side and over sexualized.

Over all I enjoyed the series.

Rating 4.0 stars

Rating is about the same for entire series. Each book feels like its own chapter in a much larger book as the next book just continues on right where the last book left off. In this book, Shawn takes a more direct approach against the magic council and starts to free some of the Lycans. Also, Shawn gets someone pregnant (I feel it is not a spoiler as long as I don't say who it is who he got pregnant). On to the next chapter (I mean book).

Lycans vs the Councils..

In this episode.. lol Sean & Co basically make a plan and try to start towards their goal of freeing the enslaved Lycans...Silver is their greatest enemy and Sean’s father found a way to transmute it.and shield them from it’s devastating effects mainly death. So things get stolen, there is political backstabbing.. sex and more sex and then a Sean unlocks the key...
I did not know this was “LitRPG” don’t know the difference or why it’s not just called fantasy because that’s what it is basically.. in a kinky way sincde I forgot to mention before Sean’s 2nd wife is a Tantric Witch. Anyways.. I’m curious what the next stage will be and it seems to be a reoccurring theme that wherever the group stays.. it gets blown up or ruined..reminds me of Stephanie Plum’s cars always getting ruined lol

Not bad

The books are mostly enjoyable and if you just read them with a light mind you'll enjoy them more.

Saying that, my alpha brain still grumbles a lot at how wussy and non-alpha Sean still is. The girls all control him too much and he's too weak minded too often. I know he was this way prior, but his lion shouldn't be so meek with the girls.
Its cringeworthy how he constantly says he loves them amd they don't even say it back, and forcing him to please them constantly instead of them trying to please him, especially when he has stuff to do! - stop doing important things and come please me!
I know its mostly that the author doesn't know how to write a true alpha, 95% of males will never be an alpha and 4% of those won't understand women like a true alpha. So I can hardly blame the author, even though I am.
It all just feeds more into our feminist society. Every guy is so wussy whipped. It gets very annoying. Females aren't even complicated like guys think they are, you just have to understand that females are always acting..
Mm, not going to get into it.

Good Read.

A harem story. The story continues with the main character looking to stay alive. Plans are made and new friends are made. Note: There are adult situations in the story as noted in the book description.

CONTAINS SPOILERS

This series has turned into a bit of a joke and you need Hollywood action movie levels of suspension of disbelief at times. The biggest joke is that MMC has a pendant that uses nuclear fission to instantly convert all silver that he comes into contact with into energy. I'm not a scientist but this is ridiculous on so many levels. The amount of energy released from nuclear fission (a small percentage of E=mc^2) is massive even for small amounts of matter and would instantly incinerate the wearer. Has anyone ever used pure silver (and no other inputs!) to create instantaneous, controlled and safe nuclear fission reactions? LOL! I'm sorry if I'm wrong here, but this reads like a superhero cartoon to me.

The series starts out making it sound like male werelions are dominant, in control and possessive but that is obviously not the case for the passive push-over MMC here as his partners have him totally wrapped around their fingers. He does pretty much whatever they say and works his ass off while they have sex together. It's so bad at one point that Roxy kicks him and then punches him in the face so hard she breaks his jaw. Of course it's all his fault she had to beat him and he quickly and submissively apologizes. It is shameful that the author so casually accepts and normalizes domestic violence. Well, he's only a white male so who cares, right? Systemic sexism and racism 'hiding in plain sight' FTW! :(

FYI the story now caters to people who have a lesbian mind control corruption and seduction fetish as Jolene uses her tantric mind magic to corrupt and seduce the dwarf into becoming a lesbian. I've seen this so many times in these types of fake harem stories where all women in the world are lesbians but just don't realize it yet and they seemingly can't wait to cuckold the submissive MMC. It seems pretty clear that all future love interests will either be openly bisexual or will quickly be corrupted into 'dining at the Y' and it seems only a matter of time before the submissive MMC is cuckolded by lesbian orgies while he's putting his life on the line and working hard to protect them.

To be clear, I have nothing against lesbians and even enjoy lesbian erotica but this is clearly tagged and marketed as a harem genre story (which it isn't, in fact it's some sort of sharing/polyamory story). TBH, I don't know why the author has any sex in the series because it's done in a half-assed way. Enough to upset sensitive/prudish/repressed people but not enough (in terms of level of detail) to excite or arouse anyone who is interested in it.

The author's narrative is straightforward. Sean Valens, the main character discovers a lot of the "scientific" advancements his Dad made, in regards to Silver, the Lycans and Magic in this third volume of this fantasy novel series. As a William Wallace, like-character (from Scotland), Sean uses his just learned knowledge about Silver, to free as many lycans as possible, from enslavement.
Volume's 1 and 2 had a lot of Gun Fights (without any of the main characters having any gun training) and just relying on their recently acquired "mutant-changeling-lycan" powers and abilities.
Because Sean was bitten by Samson (neighbor and probably Mom's replacement "husband"), Sean has Lycan "Lion Beast-folk" powers as well as everything he has learned of magic from his Dad's books, legacy and what Jolene has helped him with.
All of the volumes of this series are short 150+ pages, 19 chapters (about 7-8 pages a chapter) so it is an extremely easy read. Sex scenes are not so explicit, so novel is not erotica or uncomfortable to read.
Harem currently stays at three (Roxy, Jolene and Daelyn). Sean has sensual liaisons with Roberta (old girlfriend and mother of one of Samson's daughters) so in a way, Sean has been having sex with his "other step-mom" and the mom to his "step-sister". But author does not make this uncomfortable at all. With all the Wolf-Lycans and Fox-Lycans rescued, it is just a matter of hours for Sean to crown a lot of the female Lycans part of his harem and retinue. Yes! Sean spends most of his time in Volume 3 having sex, but the more sex he has, the more Magic and Artifacts he can create, so author has made a synergy of the sex and the magic.
Story is about to go national, from Reno and Vegas to the rest of the U.S. and then probably to the rest of the world. Because Sean can create the Silver antidotes and the un-enslavement artifacts, well, he has just become the biggest deal with the Lycans since the invention of Magic.
Author confesses that his name is not really the "author's" that because of the subject matter, he decided to create a pen-name (pseudonym). As if it were easy to become the next J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter.

Scratches an itch

This is nothing but pure wish fulfillment and entertainment, but it scratches an itch that I think every man has deep down in the primal part of our brains. Spread your seed to as many women as possible, to have as many children as possible, while protecting them all as much as possible. If that doesn’t get your testosterone pumping I don’t know what will.

The only thing that kind of pulls me out of this story is just how fast the relationships form. A few days to go from strangers to baby daddy is a bit much for me.

Sadly, I feel the characters are going to become even more two dimensional. That’s the problem with harem stories. The more romantic relationships the main character has, the less time the author will usually spend on flushing out those bonds and the girls start fading into the background to just become decoration to show how cool the protagonist is.

That said, I’ll definitely be finishing the series. It’s nice to have a book where I can just turn my brain off and enjoy.

Took three books to make the Mormon joke. Honestly I was expecting it earlier and as the series progressed was hoping it wouldn’t come up, but can’t have a polygamous fiction without it I guess.

In the third book of the Valens Legacy we finally get to see the start of the great revolution that will (hopefully) end with the freeing of the lycanthropes. This remains a fun series and I was glad to learn that more books are coming. (When Amazon said that this was book 3 of 3 I worried that Stryvant would try and pull together the whole series too quickly.) Big things are happening in the world as Alex’s mastery of magic grows and he begins to take the war to the wizards who have been hunting him.

I found a lot of humor in Stryvant’s making fantasy roleplaying games an important entry on the resume of future revolutionaries. It’s actually a nice addition to the storyline because Sean needs brain power to help him figure out how to make his father’s dream come true and he’s a college student so how many great military and tactical minds could he have access to? But I can’t help but chuckle. I started gaming forty years ago and while I have learned a lot in researching parts of my world, it never occurred to me that “revolutionary” was a job that gaming was training me for—and yes, we did play our share of wars and revolutions over the decades.

Just Plain Fun

This is a really silly book based on ridiculous ideas from impossible magic and childish nightmares of lycanthropy. AND I LOVED IT!

It's well-written, with nicely developed characters and an impossible, but consistent premise; that most of our world is full of magicians, shape-shifters and despicable humans. That sounds about right to me.

Be warned: i was a dedicated fan of the Grimm TV series, so you know where my mind is at. But i also appreciate creativity and imagination. This Series has both in spades.

And the sexual angle? Why not? Physical love among and between people IS powerful and magical, so why shouldn't that power be usable in the realm of enchantment? Stryvant uses it well, describes it well, and treats it as fun!

If i have any complaint it's the cover art. All the covers seem to have been painted by some third-grader who wasn't paying attention in drawing class. Nothing in the cover art does justice to the author's vivid description of his characters.

Still a wild ride from start to finish but I'm starting to see the strain as the story is getting a bit too large for the narrative to handle.

Characters are still likeable and interesting with new ones added in pretty frequently. Our main hero is still great and fun to read about as he learns and improves too. The author even bothers to use physics or chemistry to explain a great deal of the magic which I appreciate.

The one problem in my opinion is the addition of each new woman. Without spoiling anything the meeting between the new witch on the block and Shawn alternated between adorable and cringy depending on the paragraph. That and final words spoken to his new foxy lady about bookends really took me aback. I guess I'm used to him building relationships with people instead of just walking up and claiming them.

That being said, I still greatly enjoyed the book despite it's flaws and can't wait to continue the series.

Okaaay..., so Were-creatures are the new transformational Super-heroes. Get bit by a (xxx) and get super powers. (sorry radioactive spider's already taken) Now every socially inept geek can become a super hero, chick magnet.

The story moves along, is exciting, etc. Not too many typo's. Obviously written for adolescent males (of all ages) since the females are pretty one dimensional (I've never known any girls or woren who were that easy. Oh, yeah... Were-super sexuality, right?)

If you're looking for sexy cotton candy, it's a good read-romp. However, I think Jan's other series are better books.

That said this novella series is a fun read.

Thank God for Kindle Unlimited. I've already got the next novela in the series. Wouldn't be following it otherwise. Too $$$ for the value provided.

Very fun series!

Sean lives in Reno, and a short time ago was a struggling college student, gamer, and of course a geek. In this third installment of the Valens Legacy. He comes into his own as a lion lycan, enchanter, and a poligamist! You gotta read it, but start at the beginning with Perfect Strangers, oh and make sure your calendar is clear for a few days, cause I bet you're going tonight read the series. But wait there's more! Book 4 is promised before thanksgiving, and there's always Shadow to tide you over...

Good quick read

I've read the three books so far written in this series. I'd describe them as well written, briskly paced, fun and quick reads. There is the inevitable minor typo inherent to the modern e-published format. (Not that we old dinosaurs who have read many print books in the past are not also familiar with finding them on the printed page too.) I have found three typos in just this short review I'm typing. I can live with one or two in a chapter!

I wish I could rate these higher

But I can't and give an honest review.
These are highly overpriced short stories. I'd pay the asking price if all three stories where put in one book.
Unless you have money to burn and don't care that you can read these so called books in two hours, read these on kindle unlimited. The three short stories together make for one nice book.
As is though my opinion is you the reader are being ripped off if you are buying each individual instalment.

The Inner Lion Roars

Sean and his mates take the fight to the Magic Council most actively trying to kill them. Sean finds that he has more allies than he thought. Will they be able to free the Lycan slaves? I like the characters. They are well written, interesting, and compelling. Good vs evil is always one of my favorite plot lines. The humor in the dialogue is great and the interplay of the main characters is fun. I am downloading the next book "Head Down".

Fun somewhat explicit read.

Usually by the second book you can figure out the theme of a story. "Jan" keeps changing it up just enough to keep me interested in what's going to happen next. These books are full of twists and turns. and even even several rolls bumps . The storyline can be deep and penetrating and the characters seam to be more like rabbits than cats. Or maybe cats In Heat..

Stories continuing

Plot and events are moving along. There is more of the usual explanation about how the magic works. The computer language is gone, more like physics terms now. The different female characters still all sound the same. The go to reaction of every female Seam meets is for them to blush at him. I wish the relationships had more to them, and that the women were more dynamic. But at least the mythos of the were-lion has improved, so good world build.

Surprisingly well thought out and written

This was a fun read like the others of the series so far. The story, characters, and even the (on the surface) over the top sex had depth and meaning and the story would be less of it hadn't been there. Everything was well trimmed editorially. I'm sure some people would be squicked at the taboos this runs over, but I don't care. This was an excellent read. Hell, if this was a Netflix series, I'd totally binge watch it.

Smooth Sailing

Reading onward from previous installments has seen a very smooth transition as Sean continues his undeclared war against magic users. The author has also effortlessly introduced another aspect of fantasy creatures, the weir wolf. So far its been a fun read and I plan on continuing with book 4. I recommend this to adult fantasy fans as it might be a bit strong for some.

So it was you after all?

Well it's nice to know that one of my favorite writers is still doing what he does best....Speaking to the novel itself I'll have to say it's pretty much what I was hoping for from the last book. Now all I really need is to see if the moment stay solid in the coming sequel.

Excellent book, good fun.

Liked the book even though it rolls heavy on the harem motif. Only thing that made upset is that they live in a bunker but they forgot to LOCK the door??? Just days after getting shot??? Young dumb category checked off. 😀 But that is exactly what they are and it works for the story.

Another roaring good book!

Enjoyed the continuation of this story which is gathering momentum book by book. Too many repetitive sex scenes again for me but just skipped past them. Great fantasy and adventure story of the hero against the establishment set in modern USA which makes it a bit different from a regular hero quest book.

This series is very entertaining. The characters can be a little 2 dimensional and the relationships between the main character and his little harem develops in a rushed and unrealistic fashion and without sufficient justification from the narrative. However, these books more than make up for it in action packed fun. Definitely worth a read.

The plot thickens...

I have read a lot of adult fiction. I like the sex but usually the time between the "fun stuff" is just boring filler. I enjoy these books a lot because I have similar interests and so they keep my attention from start to finish. Just remember, it's only kinky the first time!!! If you are not a prude, I think most will like them.

OUTSTANDING !!

Jan,
Your story about Sean and his group just gets better and better . He's going to have everyone gunning for him ! Where can he go from here. And how many more wives is he going to get ? I'm tired just reading about what he's going through. Keep it up and keep me tired !

I did it...

...again...I devoured the story in two days. It’s just that entertaining. What I like about it is that the main characters are people with a heart, they show it, and still remain tough as nails. Salute to the author for developing a story with some real humanity in it.

Another awesome book

Over our heads is another winner by Jan Stryvant and I can’t wait to begin the next. Sean and the “wives” are winning hearts and I am love how they are helping to liberate without war. Yes casualties happen and all that, but I can’t wait to see what adventures happen next. You would be crazy not to start this series.
