"When a land rich in sulphur became a marshland, such appearances were known to occur. When sulphuric gases escape from the bowels of earth, it would appear as a mass of fire. They stay lit for some time or disappear in a flash. Those who did not know about this natural phenomenon would be frightened and interpret these appearances as dancing ghosts. Vandhiya Thevan had heard some elders speak about this phenomenon."
"Some of the boatmen jumped into the river looking for the child. The Emperor himself jumped into the water and was looking for the child. But where could they look? It was a flowing river. The river could have carried him away... And then a miracle happened. A little away from the boat and right in the middle of the river a lady was holding a child in her hands. She was half submerged in water. Her golden face, chest and uplifted hands were visible above water. The Emperor saw the woman.
No one knew what happened to the lady who saved the child. Nobody could identify her. And so it was said that the River Goddess – Ponni - must have saved the child. Every year on the same day, special poojas were offered to the River Goddess.
Till then Arulmozhi was the darling of the Palace. From then on, he became known as the darling of Ponni. And he was called Ponniyin Selvan. (Literally meaning the darling of River Ponni)."
