She's a take-no-prisoners fireball. He's a sweet-talking charmer. It could be love...if they don't kill each other first.
Hotshot lawyer Luanne Price may not believe in happily ever after, but she'd do just about anything to earn her absentee father's love. So when he waltzes back into her life with a plan for her to marry his business associate, she foolishly agrees. But on the wedding day, things go south. Fast. Luanne's desperate to get away, even if that means hitching a cross-country ride with the infuriating Jack Avery.
Jack needs to get Luanne out of his system. He'll watch her tie the knot and forget about her. Once she's married to another man, then she'll be off-limits forever. Solid plan. Until he spots her army-crawling through the bushes to escape the Wedding of the Season.
He knows he should let someone else deal with the runaway bride. But if there's one thing Jack has never been able to do, it's resist Luanne. Will their romance rev up on the open road, or will Jack and Luanne crash and burn?
Running With a Sweet Talker is the second book in a series of comedic contemporary romance novels. If you like zany characters, razor-sharp wit, and unlikely love stories, then you'll love the second book in Jami Albright's Brides on the Run series.
I'm a born and raised Texas girl and am the multiple award-winning author of The Brides on the Run series--a fun, sexy, snarky, laugh-out-loud good time. If you don’t snort with laughter, then I haven’t done my job.
I'm also a wife, mother, and an actress/comedian. I used to think I could sing until someone paid me to stop. I took their money and kept on singing.
I love my family, all things Outlander, and puppies make me stupid happy. I can be found on Sundays during football season watching my beloved Houston Texans and trying not to let them break my heart.
This one is funny and sweet. He’s so good to her, and I really liked it. She has a lot of character to her. Book type boyfriend with a smidge of assholery to disguise his sweetness and vulnerability.
Safety: Both of them are the respective best friends of the couple in the first book so have known one another for a year-ish? Both dates other people before. He likes her spunk ALOT and has sort of been pushing for her whereas she thinks of him as a menace. No information given on OP during this time which is honestly what I prefer. You enjoy both characters without any preconceived thoughts. 7 months ago, they nearly had a ONS.
A little offbeat. It’s kinda hard to fathom these characters as professionals, adults…. Much less lawyers. Yet, there’s something that really works here. The dialogue is real, clever, natural and a little snark, smexy, and silly all wrapped up in candy coated fun.
But….
It gets stale. Like four-year old cookies. After about 25%, it drags. By 50%, I’ve twiddled my fingers to the point of arthritis. Thelma and Louise meets woe is me and has a baby with ‘oh he/she is so hot, but I can’t act on it.’ Im sick of how “bad” her dad is, how weak her mom is, how his dad is a hurt ass, how his mom is a dead liar, and all the emo trauma that resulted. We get it. I’m over it, and the horse has been beat the fuck to death.
I’m sick of hearing that he’s a ladies man but seeing that he has zero moves. I’m sick of hearing how badass she is and seeing that she’s just a frightened rabbit.
The road-trip thing begins cute, but it turns into rambling without humor or point. The chemistry is there, but it’s drowning in a puddle of sap. This isn’t slow burn, it’s just slow.
DNF at 55%. May work for someone with much more patience than I have.
This book was hilarious. But all the details kept adding up.
When they first met, she confessed her fear of never being loved and he ran out in the middle of their ONS.
He brings up that humiliation constantly to distance himself from her and make her feel like shit.
He allows two old women to rob them, refusing to take even the $20 they offer him, because he was poor once and sees that they need his luxury vehicle more than they do. In the middle of nowhere.
He convinces the heroine she should join a stripping contest to get the money reward. Otherwise, they'll have to sleep in a park.
He's protective but only when he feels like it, and immediately says mean shit to her when he feels he's being too vulnerable.
This guy was not my idea of a real man.

I really wanted to give this one more. I really REALLY did. The story was so much better and more compelling here. The characters were interesting and I liked them (for the most part) and I did love how Jack and Luanne made this journey together and grew separately as characters as well as they grew into being a couple. Like seriously, the only bone I have to pick with this story in this regard is that I was a bit disappointed in how little them being lawyers factored into the overall story (it's just my personal take here, this story just didn't have most of the elements I love about romances with lawyers as main characters).
So yeah, this book was well on the road to earn 3 or even 3.5 rating but then there were these things - sometimes small, sometimes big - that just make me go:
But no, no, no, NOPE, not gonna happen.
So, to break it down fast and as painless as possible, here's a list:
1) author's take on depression
These are bits and pieces about Luanne's mother:
"Baby, Mama can’t get out of bed today. I’m too sad."
“She committed suicide?” “Not outright. But she wasted away to nothing and died in her sleep one night.
Does this remind you of something? Like sure, "too sad to get out of bed" and "wasted away to nothing" might not necessarily mean Luanne's mother suffered from depression but to me it clearly suggests it. So imagine how ticked off I was when Luanne repeatedly said/thought she didn't want to be WEAK like her mother. I just honestly can't. Then there's also all the talk how pathetic (and again, weak) her mother was for making her happiness dependable on a man and man, who knew women being emotional/having feelings is such a crime.
2) author's take on coming out
This is a perfect example why SOMETIMES it's best for authors not to write about what they don't know. Because based on what I read in this book, I can tell the author is The Straightest Person to ever straight and I don't mean it in a good way.
There's this conversation that happens between Luanne and Kyle (Jack's biological dad's partner) where he talks about how he and Mitch started their relationship. So the gist of this talk was (apart from it being the push for Luanne to give Jack another chance):
- not coming out of the closet is destructive to you - not coming out equals to "your crap" - you OWE IT to your family to be honest
*eyes twitching so much I can barely see*
I know it was a small part of this book but it MADE ME SO ANGRY, like who are you to tell a queer person what their responsibilities are or how much "healthier" it'd be for them to come out. Not every family is all rainbows and roses and sometimes staying in a closet is the only way for someone to feel safe and comfortable. It's not anyone's obligation to divulge their sexuality. You have no business telling queer people what they owe to others when you have clearly NO IDEA what you're talking about.
Sorry not sorry but this set me off a bit.
3) author's take on guns
The screech of the screen door and the cocking of a shotgun punctuated Jack’s threat. Kyle, Mitch, Mimi, and Leslie all poured onto the porch. Kyle handed the weapon to Mimi. “There you go, Mimi. It’s cocked and ready for you.
It's the South and you love your guns, WE GET IT, MOVE ON
Phew.
Other than that, there were few other things that bothered me but to be honest, I have no energy left to go into them. To sum up, this book had LOTS of potential and I really liked the romance part. It's just sad that it got overshadowed by the issues mentioned above.
Clearly, this author and her works just aren't for me and I for sure won't be touching any more books of hers.
Jack...dreamy, sexy, arrogant Jack. Behind that mask of confidence and sexiness and pure male goodness, hides a vulnerable man... who isn’t such a tough guy all the time.
Luanne is a little spitfire who intrigues Jack. He can’t resist her sass. He’s drawn to her beauty.
The chemistry between these two was electric. Their relationship was fun, never boring. Both being attorneys, they can’t help but try to outsmart the other.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching them try to stay away from each other. They irritated each other. They picked at each other. Yet they watched out for each other. They needed each other. The slow burn was delicious.
This was another fabulous story in the series with more excellent writing that made me fall in love with everything about it.
I freaking love Enemies to Lovers romances. The sparks, the cutting remarks, the repressed heat. Running with a Sweet Talker has all of those things, but so much more.
I recently re-read this book because it is so incredibly good that it deserves valuable space in my reading time. Luann runs from her own wedding before the I-Do's are said and her only option for a getaway is her sworn enemy, Jack. They hop into his car and start on a journey that leads them to past secrets, found family, self discovery, and love. Along the way there are plenty of laughs and swoony sighs and hot scenes. I freaking LOVE this book, y'all!
Like the other books in this series, Jami Albright goes well beyond the standard tropes and delivers a story that feels like a breath of fresh air and gives you all the feels. Her writing is stellar, her characters funny and flawed, and her stories are equal parts sweet and sexy.
Luann is a smart, feisty, female lead who is no pushover. I love her wit and her passion. Jack is so very sweet under his protective layers of charm. These characters fight their own demons, both separately and together, in a perfect blend of heart and heat.
There might have been just a little too much slow burn in this one - but I think that's how the author writes in general (although I only have one other book finished so...)
Both successful attorneys, Louann Price and Jackson Avery have been verbally sparring since the start of Running With A Rock Star. Louann is forthright and pulls no punches with everyone around her - except her own father, who treats her like a commodity and has a gift for making her wonder if she really remembers the sad/bad/mad things, like there's something wrong with her and not with Marcus Price.
After Jack helps her escape from her wedding to a man chosen by her father, they end up running away to keep Marcus from finding Louann and bringing her back to close the deal with her ex-fiancee.
To cap it all off, Jack's father has basically disowned him because he discovered (after the death of Jack's mother) that he isn't Jack's biological father. Never mind over 30 years of being a father. If this relationship hadn't been addressed and borderline salvaged near the end of the story, I'd have been REALLY disappointed.
So - Jack & Louann head out to meet the rest of his biological family. But Jack is also a master of keeping his feelings and emotions under lock and key. I felt like it took Jack WAY too long to admit all of the truths that he had buried.
But, it was still a cute story - although (as I've already mentioned) the slow burn was really too slow (in my humble opinion). How many times is too many to almost "get there" and have one or the other change their mind at the very last moment? For me, it's probably maybe twice. My opinion, for what it's worth.
Pfiouuuhhh... The opening scene got me rolling of the floor while laughing, snorting! And it was just the beginning... What a road trip it was, from the escape of the weeding to the highwaymen old ladies, the striptease contest and so many more moments. I love Jack, he is so much more than this grinning prim and proper man, what a kind heart he has, so compassionate, fun, smart, ready to defend the weak and the oppressed, being a wall for Luanne to lean against. Luanne is an amazing but so broken woman hiding behind her smart mouth. But with Jack, she begins to open up, to realize her past must not guid her future. As I loved Scarlett’s family, I definitively adore Jack’s one, they are aware of their flaws but they try their best to not fail their loved ones even if they did big mistakes. How I hated Luanne’s father, how she tools so long to see through him, but what a little girl would do for her Prince Charming dad... What ever, don’t miss to follow Jack and Luanne journey to forgiveness, truth and love.
4.5/5 stars. This is one of the best books I've read recently. Although I would have wanted more background of some characters, not so rush ending and a bit more father/son relationship, I have great time reading it, I love all the side characters and I love Luanne and Jake so so much. A great book to have a fun time!
I truly enjoyed this book! It was written with such humour & tenderness as well. I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book, as well as needing Kleenex too. We first see Jack waiting to see Luanne walk down the aisle towards someone else but then he's watching her run from her wedding. Next he's helping her escape her controlling father & cheating fiancé she was pushed to marry. Luanne & Jack were definitely a match, they pushed each other's buttons & pulled the best out from each other. Unfortunately Jack's life is turned upside down by a secret kept by his late mother. When they were together Jack & Luanne were combustible & the fact that these two warriors were able to lean on each other was great. I loved the characters of June & Pearl who got one over on Jack. I also loved his grandmother Mimi & her southern phrases. I would love to have a chance to use her line...call me that again & I'll put a knot in your tail. The way that Jack's new family accepted him & Luanne was beautiful. The way they backed her up against her disgusting father was awesome. This series looks to become a favourite & a definite reread when it's finished. I voluntarily agreed to review this book.Definitely recommend.
Running with a Sweet Talker has got to be the best book I’ve read in some time. I loved the first book in Jami Albright’s brides on the run series and was excited to dive into Luanne and Jacks story. Oh my damn, was this story amazing. It far surpassed my expectations.
Luanne and Jack are perfectly matched in every single way and it was so much fun seeing them fight for and with each other. This book has a ton going on that I won’t spoil but let me tell you, it’s definitely a slow burn romance. These two are both so stubborn there were times I wanted to throw my kindle across the room! It was so amazingly worth it in the end though. 5 stars all around!
Also, I totally swooned at this line: “You’re my end game, Thumbelina,”
Do yourself a favor and dive into this one immediately!
Running With a Sweet Talker takes you on an emotional run literally!
The book is an explosive enemies to lovers story. The plot is touching, romantic, lovely and hilarious with its fiery characters and heated bickering. What a messed up family our dear Jack-ass has and that poor Luanne...
Evidently, you can't choose your family but you can choose your own path and above all the persons you want to be surrounded with.
Eventually this story shows us how important being truly loved is, no matter where you come from.
I feel like a total bigamist here, saying I love this book as much as the first one in the series. Okay, I am! Another funny, in depth, wonderful book boyfriend— I should have known when Jack showed up on Honey’s porch with Gavin in the first book.
Thanks to Jami Albright, I’ve totally given up cat memes, but you’ll have to rip the dog memes out of my cold, dead FB page before I give those up. Anyway.
Even though this is a comedy, it’s maybe one of the best portrayals of a gaslighting relationship (father-daughter) I’ve ever read anywhere. It’s insidious, mind-warping, and yes, perhaps worse than physical abuse because it twists your mind and confidence in yourself and your reality that can have you questioning yourself for years afterward. So, much praise for Ms. Albright.
I double-love this book to go with the first one, and can’t wait for #3 to make its way to my Kindle app.
I loved this book! Hilarious! So romantic! Jack was such a smooth talker!! This book cracked me up! It was such a feel good book I couldn't stop reading! Can't wait for the next one! Love Jami Albright!!
I didn’t know what to expect from this book beyond maybe a light, fun read... but wow, I really enjoyed this book. The characters are fresh and I loved the way they spark off each other.
Luanne and Jack were such a joy to meet! I can’t get over how charming this story is.It made me have good belly laughs and at times choked me up so badly
These say characters were so awesome and loved reading their story, I was so glad that Luanne and Jack got their own book, they so deserved it and their story deserved to be told and was perfect.
This is the second book in this series and I'm loving it even more. We met Luanne and Jack in the first book and their story is packed with even more zany antics. They both have a Lot to learn about themselves and how they help each other books a fun filled beautiful journey.
I wanted to read about Jack and Luanne after meeting them in the first book. They are something together, that's for sure! Somehow, I ended up sucked into the first book and immediately got this book to continue the feel good vibe I had going on. Loved the characters, enjoyed their journey and wanted to be apart of the family they found themselves a part of. Guess I'll have to read the next one now!
So so good. First book in series was good but this was great. I laughed, cried and want to read again. Obviously well edited, no mistakes to take you out of the great characters and story. Supporting characters real and distinct, a sign of a real writer. Read this author!!!!
Luanne is a lawyer and she has seen enough divorces to know that love and soul mates do not exist so she views the request from her father to marry his business associate as a way for them to become closer.
Jack is a lawyer as well and they met when they were helping Scarlett and Gavin in Running From A Rockstar. He is attracted to Jami and figures that seeing her get married will end those feeling permanently.
What neither expected was that Luanne would change her mind and become a Runaway Bride or at least try to until her car was blocked in. Jack becomes her knight in shining armor and a zany adventure filled with laughs and love begins.
I loved both these characters and their chemistry was electric including the way they knew to push each others buttons. This is a great addition to the series and I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook and thought the narrator did a great job of bringing Jack and Luanne to life.
