"We knew they were coming one day, we just never imagined anything like…this."

Imagine being invaded by the Chinese and they want something only you have.
However, giving it to them would mean the death of someone you love.

What would you do?

When The Chinese arrive in Ridge Manor, Florida; Sheriff Wayne is the only one who knows they are coming. He tried to warn the rest of the town, but no one would listen, and now it is too late.
Joanna Marks has just come back to town after ten years on the run from her parents who did not want her to have the child she was carrying at only sixteen. The sudden death of her husband and father of her child forces her to come home just in time for the invasion.
As the days pass in the small town, now heavily invaded by soldiers, Joanna and Wayne both realize something is off with this invasion and with their invaders. Why are there so many of them, especially in their little town, and why is the highest in command settling at City Hall? Why are there no airplanes in the sky, tanks or bombs going off? Where is their military and how could they invade the entire country so quickly?
Each step closer to the truth is more terrifying than the last, and Joanna finds herself moving further from the world she knows and soon she dives into a world she did not know existed.

I'm just going to say that The Surge is a very weird book, and I believe that it rightly belongs in that sub-genre of horror considered the weird. Ambrose Bierce with his journalistic flair, and William Hope Hodgson, Matt Shaw, and yes, H.P. Lovecraft with their overt joy, describing creatures pulled out of a meth-heads nightmares, even with a little Edgar Allen Poe mixed in. Unfortunately, there's some highly derivative stuff in here as well, flavored with a too-large helping of John Saul, to its detriment, ugh!

The Surge, at its root is a paranoid nightmare that proclaims that the Chinese are going to takeover America. There is more to this, of course. There is Rose's patented gore-fest descriptions (that I love), and some characters that are solely introduced as grist for the mill fodder for the villains. If you're confused by the review, please grab a ticket, and stand in line, just like everybody else.

I didn't love it and the weird is not my favorite type of horror. Odd that the classic stuff moves me, but this did not. Despite its strangeness, there was an element of copycat that felt like Richard Laymon, bad and Shirley Jackson good. So take what you will from that. Rose is still a skilled author that I will continue to enjoy, but this one, weirdly-speaking, not-so-much.

The author clearly has a very active imagination but this was a bit too far-fetched for me.

Seems to be based on a U.S. fear of being invaded by "hordes of Chinese". Overly emotional and too many fortunate outcomes for the main characters. Just silly. This definitely belongs in the fantasy category.

Okay Willow Rose has got some imagination! The Surge is a must read if you enjoy suspense and vivid pictures of what your reading. I even found myself calling my BFF, who lives in Florida, to keep an eye out! It's that much of a great read. Be prepared to get nothing done once you start this book! 📖😱👍👍👍👍👍👏

Very, very strange

The characters are okay, but the storyline is downright strange. It is kind of like a YA fiction soap opera...not for the serious reader.

Barely finished it

I don’t mind sci-fi but this book was totally nuts. Like Jumanji on steroids
SPOILER ALERT:
Lizard Chinese people taking over the state of Fla to get back to their own world through a tunnel into the future. The characters were weak and unlike-able and the storyline was too far out there for me. I hate giving bad reviews but this was terrible. I read it till the end because I kept hoping it’d get better but it just got worse.

I didn't care for the blurb (preview) about this book...so I wasn’t in any hurry to read it. I knew I would read it eventually, because I read ALL of Willow’s books, but LET ME TELL YOU THIS! I will never, ever put off one of her books again! I started reading this and I absolutely CANNOT PUT IT DOWN. I should have trusted her! I should have known that if she wrote it, it's going to be wonderful!!! The characters are so...alive! It's absolutely unbelievable how she can introduce these characters so quick and I KNOW WHO THEY ARE!!! I would recognize any one of them if I met them walking down the street. I could gush on here forever, but I need to get back to reading. The Mayor has just spoken to her citizens and I'm anxious to see what happens next. I'm a die-hard Willow Rose fan!! (LOL and maybe a little sleep deprived.) ………………. Just finished the book, a most unusual book if I might add. I didn’t laugh, it was all pretty serious, until I was finished and looked back at what I had read. I cried a little, too. My hubby asked what I was reading about. I told him, Karma, then laughed again. Great book. Be sure to read it. One of her best…

WOW!! Willow Rose has one amazing imagination!! This book was absolutely bonkers but phenomenal!! WOW!! I loved this book so much!! It was insane!! It was fantastically bizarre and so engrossing. This is a must-read for fans of gripping suspense and vivid descriptions! This was a fantasy/sci-fi horror unlike any I've read before. It wasn't at all what I expected when I began reading it. The horror slowly crept up on me - I honestly didn't expect it from what I'd read in the synopsis, and I didn't expect it after I began reading it, until the book just took a sudden turn! The more and more I read, the better it got! This is my first book by this author, and it definitely won't be my last. I loved it! It was such an amazing story. Tense, fast-paced, highly imaginitive, entertaining, and full of so many wonderful characters and relationships! It had me teary-eyed as much as it had me on the edge of my seat! AMAZING!!

This is a fantastical journey into a small town who is beset by who they think are the Chinese--a virtual army of them--hundreds of thousands!!

It all started when the Sheriff's young daughter fell into what appeared to be a sink hole in their back yard. Then the phone calls started coming from his daughter on a phone that wasn't supposed to work.

When Joanna came back to town-just as her estranged parents left on a vacation. She had her daughter with her. She really did not have anywhere else to go.

The Sheriff kept trying to tell people what was happening--but would they listen--of course not---

This does have a happy ending for the town thankfully. But it does get a bit scary once in a while.

"Wow! This Story Is Shocking"

Here she is again! The Queen of Scream has created a threatening novel where the U.S. has been invaded by ... the Chinese. In Ridge Manor, Florida, Sheriff Wayne knows they are coming and tries to warn the rest of the town, but no one takes his advice seriously. Joanna Marks, after 10 years, returns to her home town. Her husband has died and she and her son have just now returned to be faced with terror. Wayne and Joanna soon realize there are no defense troops on the ground, nor fighters in the sky. This is a shocking, thoughtful, and frightening story. Awesome, you've got to read this very creative novel!

This is the first book I've read from Willow Rose and from the book blurb, I expected much more than I received. In several places, I found myself skimming over pages as the scenes seemed to just drag on forever. I also expected battles between the residents of the small town and the so-called Chinese soldiers as this was supposed to be a post-apocalyptic story.

The nightly phone calls from the Sherrif's "dead" daughter with future premonitions for the following day was a different twist. Other reviewers have also made comments about the story being "disjointed" - a statement that I agree with. I did finish the story which is the only reason I gave it 3 stars.

I just finished reading The Surge and tears are drying on my face. It started out a little slow, got weird, and then it totally hooked me. I enjoy books most when I am given characters that I care about, and Willow Rose certainly knows how to write them. Sheriff Wayne was fun. I loved peeling away his layers to find out if he was crazy, a freak, or just really likeable. Joanna was just really brave. I even ended up liking Martha, though it took some doing. I went into this book knowing nothing about it except that it was written by Willow Rose. I think it was better that way, so I'll end here.

This book was absolute fun. Estranged widowed daughter returns home, with her daughter in tow to the her home town. Just in time for it to be invaded by the Chinese. Nothing is what it seems. Great use of locations and such depth of characters. I really just enjoyed reading this book. Sorry it was only one book with these characters, because they were pretty filled out and believable. And any one who loves Florida as much as me, knows all about the sink holes, and this was a great way to build the story from. First time with this author. So gonna read some more of her stuff.

Chinese Invade Florida (with a twist)

What a great book. It's hard to decide how to review cause all I really want to say it's freaking awesome. I love Willow Rose's imagination. Her ability to not only think of these ideas but to have the talent to write such interesting books is truly a gift. I took one look at the cover and knew this would be something totally original. Chinese invade Florida with a twist.

Watch Out The Chinese? are coming to invade Florida!
I was leery about this book even though it sounded interesting. I also wanted to read it because I have Friends & Family that live in Florida. I ended up being pleasantly surprised since I thought I wouldn't be able to get into the story. I liked it and it kept my attention the whole book.I thought it had a very imaginative plot. I chose this book as my November Prime Kindle Owner's Lending Library Choice and I am glad that I did.

Can't decide exactly how I feel about this book...

This book had a fairly busy pace with engaging characters. However, I had a hard time with the story because I felt like we were missing half of the facts. Most items were cleared up by the end of the book, which was nice. The premise was a bit far-fetched for me and I would have liked to see more of a backstory/closing on the invaders. Wasn't a bad book though. I would read more books by this author.

WOW, talk about a Fantasy or Sy Fi but made your mind think. Was very interesting and you wanted to keep reading to see what happened.
Then you also had the death of her husband , which touched home and questions you asked your self. The guilt, the hurt and the things you cross and have to except. And the letting go, so their pain can go away. You feel guilty but on the other hand you blame yourself. 😢♥️

Pretty decent story. Quick, faced paced read. It was lacking that bit of background into how why of the creatutes story. You get a small bit of insight on them but are left kind of hanging. Also you are left feeling like well are they just trying to get home? I guess being in that situation might not have humans thinking along those lines, which doesnt say much for us lol. That you are putting all of the humans there against the life of one girl, well two after the other chic willing goes there (and come to find out others that were written off but dont have any major presence in the story). I have children so I totally get it but still.... I also would have been the one to have jumped to get to/be with my only child too, so theres that. So that seemed to be the only reason not to let the creatures get back to where they wanted to be that I could discern. But hey, maybe I missed any other reason/s. Still a decent read.

Not What I Expected

This is a well-written book, but with so many unanswered questions and with so many clueless characters. I figured out the identity of the invaders long before they did. This sort of sci-fi, sort of dystopian novel is completely different from anything else I've read by Willow Rose and it's a genre that I tend to avoid. That I finished it, even though it took a couple of weeks instead of a couple of days, is a compliment to the author.

Joanna returns to her hometown to pick up the pieces after losing her husband, but doesn't want to run into her family who kicked her out after becoming pregnant at 16. Instead she comes home to invading Chinese troops taking over her town, and she finds herself helping out more than she can believe.
Another great read from Willow Rose in a more sci-fi way.

Willow you did an awesome job with The Surge! I don't know where you get your ideas but keep them coming.
This book is about an invasion of the Chinese or is it? Read it and you will find out!
Willow Rose even though this is an awesome book, I myself prefer your scary books. Please don't ever give up on them!

The Surge was an AWESOME read!!

What would you do, if the Chinese invaded the Bahamas and the U.S.? A small town, in Florida is invaded by what seems to be Chinese soldiers. They arrived in small amount, until suddenly there are thousands. But, all is not as it seems as the townsfolk are confined to their homes; while others are killed.

Fantastic

Willow Rose has quickly become one of my favorite authors in a very short amount of time. The Surge was different than anything else I have read by her but fantastic from beginning to end. I think using the Chinese invasion played on all our fears to some degree. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Wasn't what I thought.

My first thought was that this wasn't a story I'd be interested in. Deciding to go out of my comfort zone I found it a quirky, different kind of story. Liked it more than I thought in would although, it's not a favorite but was fun to read. Gave it a 3 as being in the neutral zone.

Willow Rose has struck another home run for me with "The Surge" . The story is set mostly in Florida, a state which is a very likeable place anyway. The intrigue that besets the main characters seems so plausible, that I couldn't wait to see what would happen to them next. Highly imaginative story, with very believable characters make this read a very worthwhile endeavor.

What can I say? The Surge was exciting, fast paced, and one of the oddest stories I have read in a long time, but I loved every minute.
Even though Willow Rose is mostly known for horror, this is horror, science fiction, and weird all wrapped up in one. What a great read! Keep up the excitement Willow Rose!

Childish writing

I thought that I would give Willow Rose' s writing a second chance, after my dislike of the others I tried to read. Mistake! Juvenile writing, unlikable shallow characters and waste of time. Premise was interesting but handled poorly. I have learned my lesson. Never again!
