Brightmoon #9

The Dragon Caller

Rate this book
The dragons are coming, and only a Dragon Caller can stop them. But the Dragon Callers are long gone…

Ruell knows he’s different. At night, intense, lucid dreams take his mind far away, flying in dragon form over the oceans and coastal forests. It’s as if he’s in the dragon’s mind, seeing everything they see, feeling every sensation of their raw majesty. In his dreams, he’s the most powerful being in the world, not an oddity.

Could the dreams be real? Could he be the first Dragon Caller in thousands of years? If so, he has no idea how to control this power and the dragons are coming to find him. The only people who may be able to help are halfway across the continent, and he doubts he can reach them before the dragons arrive to spew their fire over him and everyone dear to him.

Garrett wants to protect his son, and he’s learnt a trick or two in his time, but if Ruell really is a Dragon Caller, every king and lord and petty tyrant will want to exploit his power, and they won’t ask nicely. Garrett and Ruell will find themselves in the middle of a war for dragon power, because whoever rules the dragons rules the world.

And if nobody rules the dragons, there’ll be nothing to stop them taking over the world. The battle will be for the very survival of humankind.

A stand-alone epic fantasy set in the Brightmoon world.

I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.

Wow what a book for a first time story from a new author. Ruell sees himself as if he is in the dragon. Couldn’t put it down. Received a free book but reviewing because it’s outstanding.

This is book #9 in the series but it stands alone just fine. I haven't read the others in the series and had no difficulty figuring out what was going on and who was who.

I really liked the main characters - Ruell, Garrett, Elestra and Taia. When Ruell was introduced, I thought he was a young child of 9 or 10 because he was so exuberant. Turns out he was 20, just good-natured and rather sheltered. I loved seeing Ruell come into his own and mature into a strong, powerful man.

Ms. Ross writes in such a way that the characters explode off the page including the dragons. Everything is so vibrant and beautiful that it feels as if you can actually "see" things happening. I loved everything about this book and will definitely be picking up the others in the series to catch up on past events.

I love everything dragon so was more than happy to read an Advance Reader Copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing same.

This was sent to me in exchange for my honest review from hiddengems.com and I can honestly say even though this is like the ninth book in this series it can be read alone and I plan on reading the others in this series because this was one that I really enjoyed reading. The travels and challenges that Ruell and Garrett took at each corner was just that much more exciting than the other and then when they met Elestra it really started getting exciting because the roads to Mesanthia and the people of Tre'annatha now I'm sure you are just going to have to read this one to figure it all out... I finished this on Christmas morning and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas as you follow along with the Dragon Caller...

Solid epic fantasy.

Ruell is the classic geek, adept at neither sword play nor political intrigue, but a naïve dreamer whose favourite pastime is burying himself in whatever book he happens to be able to get his hands on. Especially if there's a mention of dragons with the tome's pages!

It was enjoyable watching him blossom as he finally discovers the meaning of the strangely vivid and unusual dreams that have been plaguing him.

This was a well written, fast paced and engrossing story and despite being the ninth book in a series it definitely stands alone without difficulty. I've actually just purchased some of the other books in this series because this is a world I'd like to discover more about.

I was a little disappointed in the ending, it was quite predictable, and felt much more like a damp squib going off rather than an explosive, unexpected finale. I could also have done without the dose of romance, but that's probably just my bias and at least it only crept in to the closing chapters.

Nonetheless, this was a pleasant epic fantasy that I received as an ARC and had no hesitation in writing a review.

This is the first Brightmoon novel that I’ve read and it leaves me sad and bereft. Why? Because it was so much fun that I’m kicking myself for having missed the eight prior books!

Since this is the first in this series that I’ve read I can absolutely confirm that it can be read - and thoroughly enjoyed - as a standalone, even if I’m sure there must have been references to prior books that I simply missed. Pauline M. Ross has created a wonderful world for her characters to inhabit (and not just because of the wonderful dragons in it - though I am a sucker for dragons), and those characters l, from Ruell and his dad Garrett to the supporting cast, are superbly crafted. Add that to a fantastic plot that’s full of adventure, mystery and magic, and the result is a heady but thoroughly enjoyable mix.

Highly recommended.

One thing you can count on with Pauline Ross. A story that takes you away from this world. I volunteered to read an advanced readers copy for an honest review. Well, here it is! Loved it. Expected to. Wasn't disappointed.
I have read thousands of books, from every genre I can think of. I love to read. Some books are terrible. Some are what I call mind candy, light and easy entertainment. Some pull you in, take you to the depths, leave you richer and wanting more. This is from the last category.
Each book has been from a different part of Ross's world. Not all have dragons. All have magic. Many kinds of magic.
I'm a dragon aficionado. I favor Science Fiction and Fantasy. I prefer deep books. I like some Romance. This has it all!
Lots of reviews will tell you a smattering of the story. I will tell you this. Dive in. Dive deep. You'll be so happy you did. Guaranteed

In terms of steps in the world development, this probably is quite a big step. However, you really need to remember some of the key previous books (maybe all of them!) to keep some of the background straight. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the changes and development in the story, especially considering the title of the next book.

Still a good book but not my favourite in the series - and the wind blower came across as very weird to me, almost magical and weird.

This book was fabulous read. I loved every minute of it and found it hard to put down when it was time to go do something else besides read. The plot is compelling and the characters are easy to love. It was over way too soon and left me wanting more. I can not wait for the next book!! Pauline Ross has penned another winner.

I liked the premise of this book, but the characters felt a little flat at times.

Still a fun story, and I will likely read another in the series at some point.

In many ways, I really enjoyed Garrett and Ruell, but the language just simply got to me the F* bombs were thrown so many times it was hard to ignore. Parents, please keep this book from your children it is not worth it to expose them to this language. You may notice that the first time I tried this book I put it down with a one star rating, and I felt bad about it so I picked it up again to give it a fair read.
