A ruthless Colonel, Omar Muka, gathers to him a dark army of “men without souls” . . .
Albinos, hunted by witch doctors who believe their severed hands can ward off Evil, rally around a charismatic but flawed leader to form an army of their own . . .
Poachers, driven by greed, push elephants ever closer to the brink of extinction . . .
Against this backdrop, Detective John Briggs arrives in East Africa with only one purpose in mind: to track down Jill Relson, the woman he loves, and bring her home to America. But the reason Jill came here in the first place was to find her best friend, who was kidnapped by Colonel Muka. Which means that if John wants to rescue her, he’ll have to run a gauntlet between Black and White armies. But the X factor in all of this is the elephants . . .
Hi there, nice to meet you! Here are a few things about me:
I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, back when it had more of a small-town feel. For a while I was incarcerated at (er, I mean I was a student at) Hillwood High, home of the Hilltoppers (whatever those are).
My father was a professor of Spanish & Portuguese at Vanderbilt University, and was awarded a couple of research grants which allowed us to live in Brazil on two separate occasions, once in Rio de Janeiro, once in Recife.
Later, I graduated from Vanderbilt with a double major in English Lit and Portuguese (yes, I had to take a class or two from my dad, which was awkward, but I would gladly do that again if I could see him now). Later still, I attended the graduate program in Creative Writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder, continuing the trend of receiving degrees from institutions with unusual mascots (Commodores and Buffaloes). I kept that going by earning an M.L.I.S. at Denver University, home of the Pioneers.
These days, I live in Broomfield, Colorado with my wife, two of my kids, and Rory, an outstanding Holland Lop rabbit.
If you have the time and interest, I hope you’ll visit my website at www.briceaustin.com, where you’ll find more information about my books, plus a couple of downloadable stories. Have a great day!
BLACK & WHITE, is the continuing story of the Must Trilogy, by Brice Austin. The first book was the drug Must invading a city and Detective John Briggs and with the help of an elephant expert, Jill Relson investing where this drug has come from.
Jill had returned to an elephant research station in Africa, to help solve two mysteries. What has happened to her friend involved with the Center for Elephant Research gone missing. Second, is this new drug responsible for the decline of male elephants.
Briggs has gleamed new information off the street that Jill might be into more trouble then expected in the very same people she has placed her trust into keeping her safe. He has decided to follow her into Africa. Austin has brought the reader into today's many issues regarding Africa. Human suffering vs money, private help aid vs government corruption, and modern society vs elder leadership.
Bice Austin's story line will make it impossible to leave this book down for long.
Black and White is even better than Must, the first book of Mr Austin’s trilogy. It works well as a stand-alone novel.
This part takes place in Africa, but somehow that is the natural outcome, and continuation, of book one. I don’t know if Mr Austin spent time there or not, but it reads like he did, and came under the spell of the magnificent animals we call elephants, as well as the country.
I reserve the five-star rating for books I expect to read more than once or even twice. Black and White fits this category.
"Black & White" is the second book in the "Must" series. I won the 1st book on Goodreads. It took me a couple of years to get to it, but when I did, I had to read more. I normally don't buy books any more, but I did pay for "Black and White", and have purchased the the 3rd book to see how the author wraps it up. Can be a bit confusing going back and forth from the different character's perspectives and different time sequencing, but overall, a great series so far with action, intrigue, with a "save the elephants" theme.
I loved this book just as much as the last one. The characters are great, the plot is thrilling, and the drastic variety of cultures you get to see is fascinating. I can't wait for the third book to come out.
I won Must in a Goodreads giveaway a few months ago, and in my review, I said that I wanted to get my hands on the second one, as the cliffhanger left me wanting more. I come home from work the other day and what do I find but the second book and a little note from Austin thanking me for my review. I was so thrilled. What a kind gesture.
I will update this review after I have read Black & White. I can't wait to see what happens next!
