When shall we meet again In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
Carly Gosse is a witch with a problem. Several of them. Her sisters treat her like a porcelain doll, her mother is keeping all kinds of secrets, and oh yeah, her boyfriend is a monster.
Styx also has a problem, a red-headed one that comes with freckles. He knows he should leave, but he can't abandon the little witch that has stolen his heart. Especially when Carly announces her intention to head to Asgaard to drop off something for her crazy mother. He has to follow her to the Old World, if only to watch her cute little backside.
But in this world of fairy-tale creatures, nothing is as it seems. The Gosse sisters know their mother likes her secrets, but they've never found out exactly why. When it all comes out at last, will any of them survive the fallout?
Especially when Carly realizes that Styx has his own secret. One that could rip them apart for all eternity.
Three out of four happily-ever-afters isn't bad... Unless you're the fourth.

The queen of twists is back in this final installment of the Toil and Trouble series. I'm sad to see it end, but I'm hopeful, if we all band together with pitchforks and torches, Heather R Blair will give us another story from this world—I'm greedy like that.
But back to this story. Carly and Styx. Seriously back when I started this series, I had no idea it would become my all-time favorite PNR. I can't say that each installment got better because Seph and Jack's story was just too damn good to diminish in any way, but they are all equally as good. And for a six book series, that is a very rare thing. So kudos Ms. Blair.
I'm getting sidetracked again, aren't I? Well, what I'm trying to say is Carly and Styx's story did not disappoint. Not by a long shot. I found myself reading this book very slowly, wanting to savor every minute of it. And you know—YOU KNOW—you've found a great book when that happens. I'm not going to get into the plot—to say one thing would ruin another—but I will say, I was surprised by a few things, smiling like a loon at other things, gripping the edge of my seat a time or two, and was left with an overall sense of contentment.
If you're not a lover of PNR or it's not your go-to genre, please don't dismiss this series. I promise you, it has a little of everything for everyone.

What an amazing ending to the Toil and Trouble series by Heather R. Blair!
I didn’t think she could outdo all the books that came before, but this one pretty much tops them all. It reveals so many hidden secrets that have been playing in the background throughout the Gosse sisters’ journey, all while showcasing Carly and Styx’s relationship. Even that wasn’t all that it seemed.
Carly always felt underestimated by her family. She’s the sweet one. The artistic one of the group. The one no one could trust enough with the tougher things in life. When she’s given a task that takes her into another realm, Styx refuses to let her go alone. Along the way Carly is confronted with the truth of what Styx is before she unleashes her magic in a most unexpected manner.
It’s really difficult to summarize this book because nothing stays the same. The story is constantly twisting and turning, taking the reader from one place to another with no time to grow bored or get bogged down. I would have never predicted it to cumulate in such a fantastic way. I laughed, I swooned and I cried but most of all I fell in love with this couple as well as the complex path they had to take to reach their happy ever after.
I don’t want this series to be over so I’m holding out hope that we’ll at least get some kind of novella in the future to update us on these characters and where their lives and decisions eventually take them. This was simply an incredible read and the series will remain on my re-read shelf forever!
This is an honest review of an advanced copy provided by the author but I'll be purchasing my own copy just in case magic really exists and this copy "magically" disappears.
Styx is mine. And I’m his. There’s never been any question of that in my mind, not since the first day we saw each other. However, I know Styx has what he might call ‘reservations.’ He thinks he’s too dangerous for me, too dark, too scary. - Carly
I lift her bodily off my lap and toss her to one side, my hands shaking as I leap from the bed and stomp to the other side of the room. I am way too big and badass to feel like Alice falling down the rabbit hole, but that’s exactly who I am. Except my white rabbit is one sexy, stubborn, redheaded witch. - Styx
A quick caveat before we begin...
I almost can't believe this is the end.
And it's such a creative, engaging, and exciting end at that!
I'm not sure how to much to share and how much to hold back regarding the intricate and fascinating plot, with all its neat twists and turns, because part of the pleasure of this book is discovering its secrets. And not only the ones concerning the leads, but those of the entire series itself. Chances are good that if you had some questions along the way, you'll find the answers here.
So I think I'm going to keep it somewhat vague because for those of you who've already devoured the final book (like I did), you don't need me to tell you about it. And those of you who've read up to book five and are about to dive into this one? You really don't want me to tell you too much about it. Okay, I know, I know. I'm not the boss of you. But please just trust me on this. It's going to be a helluva lot more fun if you experience the sweet, but hot romance (along with the unexpected crazysauce) for yourself...
Let's talk about Carly...
With Carly, what you see isn't always what you get. The quiet, overprotected sister who paints the bizarre and beautiful images that come to her in visions and dreams, is a good soul with a huge heart. But this lovely and artistic witch is often underestimated and misunderstood. She is a strong woman who isn't to be messed with and far more capable than anyone realizes. She's also incredibly dangerous and has some powerful gifts that remain hidden from everyone.
(Well, Carly's mother knows. Oriane knows almost everything... for reasons.)
When Carly is sent on a questionable mission (by Oriane) to Asgaard, she's instructed to bring a mysterious object to one of the gods. She's determined that nothing is going to stop her. Not even her viking-sized, growly, frightening, protective, distant, adoring and super secretive boyfriend (How's that for a whole slew of adjectives?) who has forbidden her to go (HA! Nice try, buddy...)? The guy who totally freaks her super protective family out and, for reasons he refuses to share, won't let her touch him?
That's right. Not even him.
So, she's got her work cut out for her on all fronts, but Carly isn't one to give up. She's going to do what her mother asked her to do because she trusts her. And she's also going to find a way to get her man to open up and be intimate with her because he's the one. She knew from the moment she laid eyes on him. And that's that. Except, well, it's not that simple. It never is for the Gosse women...
Who (and what the @#$#%!!!) is Styx?!!!
Styx fascinated me. Partly because I spent so much time wondering why he feared hurting Carly, why everyone but her was freaked out by him, and what in the world he was. Truth be told, Styx is one scary mofo. Seriously. When you learn the truth and what he's actually capable of? What his true purpose is? You will better understand his hesitation. But part of why I adored her was because he didn't frighten her and she trusted her instincts and her heart. From the moment they met, they connected on a much deeper level.
How can I resist a hero who genuinely falls for the heroine's soul and only ever wants the best for her? I mean, come on! He's ancient and he's pretty much seen and done it all. She's obviously not and she's inexperienced, but she's also wise for her years, doesn't fear him, and she wants him fiercely. And Carly is so through with waiting and being treated like she's too fragile. The push and pull of their dynamics, plus their deep and real affection for each other, was a pleasure to read. And the ways in which Carly responds to the stunning/challenging truths regarding her true love? Well, that's some touching and beautiful stuff right there, and it made me adore her even more.
Wrap it up, lady...
So, in summary:
Love. Life. Witches. Royalty. Gods. Immortals. Storms. Sex. Myths. Magic. Monsters. Battle. Separation. Acceptance. Time travel. War. Family. Loss. Secrets. Revelations. Soul-eaters. Shifters. Annihilation. Power. Alpha. Omega. Mystery.
And a bar called Toil and Trouble. It starts there. It ends there... maybe.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the gist without me giving anything else away. To put it simply, there's a lot going on in this book. It brings the many threads of this series together and weaves them into something unique and memorable that, in many ways, boils down to this:
“I love you all, and everything I’ve done comes down to that one simple truth.”
Yes. Yes, it does. So, hats off to the talented Ms. Blair for a wonderfully entertaining, moving, and enjoyable journey that I won't soon forget.

This series is so well written! Heather Blair does a great job making her characters unique. All of the sisters and their men have their own distinct voices! I loved the way Carly and Styx fell in love and got together. Carly was a lot tougher than anyone realized and Styx was perfect for her! The storyline and writing was so good that I was able to get over the former manwhore falls for a virgin trope. Luckily no real details of his escapades were given and I was actually curious about what form he was in when he was living it up sexually. I truly enjoyed this series and would love it if the author gave us more!🤞🏻❤️
This is the final book in the sisters series (I think). Although there is a book 7 about Georg Kivistö. A Curious Twist of Lime. Which is my next read.
This book belongs to Carly and the mysterious Styx. And it’s a great end to this series. And yes we get answers. In fact we get all our questions answered. How Oriane gained her powers and why she does all the crazy stuff she does.
I enjoyed this read and I’ve enjoyed this series. It features strong females, hot sexy men/gods/bears/assassins/monsters. So all in all a good selection of hot powerful men..
Warning - Please start with book 1. Not a standalone.
Tiramisu stars for the exquisitely layered plot. Heather Blair makes every word count.
Carly is gentle - an artist, a dreamer, a romantic at heart. Everybody treads carefully around Styx and he likes it that way. Carly has an overprotective family, a mysterious boyfriend, an unpredictable mother and a dangerous task.
“We’re family now, Carly,” he says, echoing my thought in that royal growl. “We want you to be safe.” “Styx is not safe.” Jack again. “And you guys are?” I deadpan. Three handsome faces scowl in tandem.
I've wondered and been a little bothered by Carly's unwavering faith in her mother. Good to know I'm not the only one...
To avoid nasty spoliers, here's a hint of what's inside : true love, death, immortals, shifters, royalty and family.
This is a dangerous world where legends and myths come to life in the most stunning settings. Take everybody seriously because they will surprise you in incredible ways.
Read it for the taut writing, high stakes and mounting tension. For the kickass leads, cunning villains and a clever spin on mythology and folklore.
An excellent conclusion to an intense series, I'm hoping for a spin off.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Damn.....I'm done. I tried to hold off the inevitable as long as I could but it's just so good! 4.5 stars for the whole series for sure. I loved it. Thank you Heather Blair for the awesome ride. Carly was great! A lot more badass than one would ever assume. Styx is fascinating top to bottom. I'm going to miss all these characters :(.
Okay, so I really suck at writing reviews after I've finished the book. I devoured this one in less than a day, but it took me forever to write this review. Sorry!
I've loved Heather R. Blair's work since I started her first series, Celtic Elements, and she just keeps getting better. This series, Toil and Trouble, was a splendid blend of the real world and fairy tale creatures. When I met Seph and Jack in the first book, Sixpence and Whisky, I fell in love with the world and the characters. Glimpses of Carly and Styx had me wanting more.
And yay! Ms. Blair wrote their story. What a doozy of a story, too! Styx is protective and completely in love, but he keeps Carly at arm's length. With good reason, though I'm not giving away that spoiler. ;) Carly is sick of everyone treating her like a dreamy kid who can't handle her own life, so when her sometimes manipulative mother asks her to return something to Asgard, she agrees.
I adored Carly and Styx together, especially since Carly wasn't a pushover. In short, read this series. You won't regret it.
Another fantastic entry into this series! I've loved Carly and Styx throughout the series and was excited to see how their HEA would go, and it certainly didn't disappoint. This wrapped up everything nicely and did it with an exciting story which pulled on your heartstrings! Definitely recommend this series to paranormal readers who love strong kickass women and deliciously alpha heroes!
A fantastic ending to an imaginative and amazing series! Each of these books have impressed me with the creativity and originality so I had pretty high expectations of this book...and Heather R. Blair did not disappoint.
Carly has always been the quiet and slightly misunderstood Gosse sister. For most of the series she keeps to herself and spends time on her unusual artwork. But this book showed a completely different side to her and I loved it. Gone is the meek sister who went years without speaking and in her place is a strong, confident woman looking to prove herself to her family and the man she loves, Styx.
Styx is another unexpected surprise in this book. He's been a mysterious outsider throughout this series and his relationship with Carly was never quite clear. In this book his secret comes outs and Carly learns that Styx is much more than anyone could have guessed.
I loved everything about this book but I think my favorite parts were watching Styx break down and accept Carly's love. These two are meant to be together and even death itself can't keep them apart.
Wow! Just wow! This was a great ending to this series. Styx and Carley's relationship is volital. Each book in this series can be read alone but is better when read in order. Start with "Sixpence and Whiskey" and follow the magical ride through them all. You won't be disappointed! I can hardly wait to see what Ms. Blair has up her sleeve next.
I really liked getting the main character's side of the story as well. There were some twists I didn't see coming but that weren't jarring either. Very enjoyable read. Have to say that I will like it better when I go in for the re-read though. I tend to be irritated by the parallel timeline books when the characters are all in the action together.
4 stars. This was a great end to this fun, addicting series! This is Styx and Carly's story. Carly is the final Gosse sister in the series. She has been in a relationship with Styx, as we have seen in previous books. Carly's mother sends her on what turns out to be a dangerous errand. Styx follows in an effort to protect her and a world of trouble ensues. I don't want to give away to much of the story, but there are a lot of twists and secrets revealed. But it all wraps up nicely in this satisfying conclusion to the series.
I had been looking forward to Carly and Styx's story. I was very intrigued by both of them from the glimpses we had seen of them in the other books in the series. There was so much more to them than I expected. Carly comes off as sweet and always happy, but there is more to her than meets the eye. She is also very strong and a powerful witch, often underestimated and coddled by her family. Styx was very protective of Carly and obviously cared about her, but he was also a bit of a mystery. In this book, we finally get to see who he is and how the couple fits together. I really loved Carly and Styx together. They were a perfect match for each other. The story is a bit intricate and complicated with lots of characters. I have to admit I was confused a few times. But, overall, I was really happy to see this couple get their HEA.
I am sad to the see this series come to an end! It is fun, sexy and mysterious. There is so much potential in this world with all of the fairy tale characters. I hope Ms. Blair continues the series in some way as it's one of my favorite paranormal series!
Three out of four happily-ever-afters isn’t bad… unless you’re the fourth.
Carly Gosse is always overlooked and babied by her powerful older sisters… and their significant others. With a mission from her Mother, Carly is ready to prove herself… until things start to go wrong…
Styx refuses to taint Carly in any way, he loves her and wants to protect her. But that is where it needs to end. But Carly is ready to take what she wants… and Styx who is more powerful than she has ever fathomed is just going to have to stand by and watch…
I absolutely loved this series, and this book lives up to the intense conclusion we have been waiting for. Carly is strong, and for the most part happy flying under the radar. But she is also sick of being handled gently… most especially by Styx, whom she feels will never treat her as a woman who knows what she wants. Styx, oh my goodness, who knew how sweet this monster would be… and just when we think he is more harmless than people have warned… watch him when Carly is in danger…
I could go on and on about Heather Blair’s writing. She is a master at weaving this paranormal world, and as someone who doesn’t read a lot of paranormal I was completely hooked with the first in the series, Sixpence & Whiskey. This series is fresh, unique and a must read for anyone who loves a good romance.
One final note: I had the fantastic opportunity to beta read for this book, and I am so excited for everyone to finally be able to experience Carly and Styx’s story!
Ah, this was really good. I loved Styx and Carly as much as I thought I would. I'm sad it's over, but I like when an author can tie up all the threads and finish a series, and this was a satisfying end. That being said… I absolutely would not be mad if there was a return to this world. Even a pop-in with the girls and their guys.
Is it actually possible to fall in love with death? Surprisingly, yes, if it is written by Heather Blair. Wow! Did this book take me for a ride. We finally get to know the quiet but mysterious little sister Carly. Who knew she would be a force to be reckoned with, one that is possibly the only one strong willed enough to go toe to toe and become the death's salvation.
While Carly was surprising, Styxx lived up to the glimpses we saw of him in the previous books and a heck of alot more. His protective and sweet side was such a contrasting element to his dark, sexy, and dangerous side, but it was just one of the ways Ms. Blair weaves a story and characters so beautifully.
The chemistry between the two characters was smoking hot, as usual in these books, but it was fun to watch Styxx literally squirm trying to be the good guy and resist.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC for the story, but I it's bittersweet to say goodbye to this series. It has provided a consistent escape into a world and characters that have been a privileged to know and experience. The books in the series have had it all for me. An alpha hero, a strong, smart and brave heroine, chemistry between the characters, hot sexy times, and an actual interesting storyline and adventure in each and every book. I eagerly await what lies ahead in Ms. Blair's imagination.
This book... beautiful. It had it all!! Love, loss, hope, heartbreak. My only complaint is genuinely that I wish it were longer.
I’ve been waiting for Carly and Styx’s story for what feels like forever - and like the other books, it shows all of our friends as an ensemble. Most of the other books in the series pretty firmly overlapped with the other stories; the heroines missing from one part to be dealing with her own storyline, which was later revealed in their own book. This is the first book in the series that seems like it entirely begins and ends after the conclusion of the other books. Although if I reread the other series, I might find myself proven wrong. I suppose that’s part of the fun!
I do really wish we could have seen Styx rescuing Carly from the wolves beyond the brief mention - I feel like I could never get enough of these two so of course that’s part of my review. :)
My favorite couple after Seph and Jack, these two did not let me down. The writing is superb as usual, and even tropes I normally avoid I found myself indulging in (virginity, instalove). I just really fell for them, and the writing was so persuasive I never gave the tropes a second thought. It just flowed so, so well.
These two were a fabulous conclusion to this series, which will go down as my number 1 favorite series of the year. And speaking as someone who had a tough year... these books really helped me through some rough times. I will be appreciative of a stranger who had these listed as a “favorite” on their bookshelf for a long time to come.
5+. Thank you, HRB, for a wonderful time.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read 5 of the 6 books in this series back-to-back, so I'm reviewing them as a group. It was a great series. I highly recommend it for paranormal romance fans who like a good mystery, well-written characters, and interesting stories. These books have happily-ever-after outcomes, but they aren't over-the-top romances where every other page is an excuse to rip off someone's clothes. As long as you are a fan of contemporary fantasy and willing to go along with creatures who hide in plain site who have magically powers, these quick reads are great.
Magpies & Moonshine is a wonderful conclusion to the Toil & Trouble series. Styx has been presented as a mysterious and ominous character throughout the series so I was curious to learn more about him. Let me tell you ... he does not disappoint. I loved his character. The way Carly wraps this tough guy around her finger is cute. The story delivers several twists ... one that will have you shouting with joy ... another that will make you want to pull your hair out. But it all comes to a lovely and satisfying conclusion.
ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't expect anything less than a fiver from Ms Blair! What a great and banging conclusion to an amazing series! It took me about a little less than 24 to finish this book, I was just completely hooked from start to finish. I was really surprised when I finally found about what goes on behind closed doors regarding Styx and Carly's relationship. Initially Carly was portrayed as quiet and sweet compared to the other Gosse sisters but I knew there was more to her than meets the eye, same goes for Styx. Whew, this story totally took me on a rollercoaster ride. It was really great, I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us next!
What a bittersweet ending to a fantastic series! Carly the cool artist. Styx with his mysterious name. I was curious about these two. Curiosity satisfied. So cute how they're both soul-eaters, hiding their true nature. Hey, even monsters have soulmates! For me, the best part was when Carly left Styx naked and tied to the bed. She left Death in bondage--but then texts someone to untie him. Classy! As par with the series, lots of plot twists and loose ties in neat bows. Love how it ended. I liked the family reunion, and their mother's explanation of their whole freaky lives. So far, this is one of my favorite series!
This T&T book revolves around Carly Gosse ( a witch ) and Styx ( a .... well you'll have to read the book to find that out ). It is a faster than lightning trip around the world to Aasgard and Helheim and back again. Tricks within traps and a very loooong game played by Carly's mom and Loki. Add in some old friends, family members with wicked powers and you have a non-stop speed train ride to happily ever after. I know, it doesn't give you any particulars, but i hate spoilers, so I'll say read all the books in order for the best enjoyment and then grab this one, settle in for a long read and enjoy !! 5+⭐'s !! I received a gifted copy of the book and am voluntarily choosing to leave an honest and unbiased review.
This is the final book of this series Though I am hoping we'll get another story or two in this world. I want to see if a certain character finds his HEA.
What a great ending to this series. We finally get the whole pictures now of why things are done the way they are. I was really surprised to find out about Styx and his role.
This is definitely one of my favorite series! I will recommend this to readers, nonreaders, and everyone in between! I am excited to checkout other books by Heather!
