Life Hauptmann's first drama, Before Dawn (1889) inaugurated the naturalistic movement in modern German literature. It was followed by The Reconciliation (1890), Lonely People (1891) and The Weavers (1892), a powerful drama depicting the rising of the Silesian weavers in 1844 for which he is best known outside of Germany.

Hauptmann's marital life was difficult and in 1904 he divorced his wife. That same year he married the actress Margarete Marschalk, who had borne him a son four years earlier. The following year he had an affair with the 17-year-old Austrian actress Ida Orloff, whom he met in Berlin when she performed in his play The Assumption of Hannele. Orloff inspired characters in several of Hauptmann's works and he later referred to her as his muse.
In 1911 he wrote The Rats. In 1912, Hauptmann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, "primarily in recognition of his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art."
During the First World War Hauptmann was a pacifist. In this period of his career he wrote several gloomy historical-allegorical plays, such as The Bow of Odysseus (1914), The White Saviour (1912–17), and Winter Ballade (1917). After the war, his dramatic abilities appeared to diminish. He wrote two full-length plays that are similar to the early successes: Dorothea Angermann (1926) and Before Sunset (1932). He remained in Germany after Hitler's Machtergreifung and survived the bombing of Dresden. His last work was the Atriden-Tetralogie (1942–46). His works in German were published by S. Fischer Verlag.
Hauptmann died at the age of 83 at his home in Agnetendorf (now Jagniątków, Poland) in 1946. Since the Polish communist administration did not allow Hauptmann's relatives to bury him in Agnetendorf (although even the Soviet military government had recommended this), his body was transported in an old cattle wagon to occupied Germany more than a month after his death. He was buried near his cottage on Hiddensee.
Under Wilhelm II Hauptmann enjoyed the reputation of a radical writer, on the side of the poor and outcasts. During the Weimar Republic (1918–33) he enjoyed the status of the literary figurehead of the new order, and was even considered for the post of state president. Under Hitler he kept his distance from the regime, but never publicly criticized it. This, and the fact that (unlike so many writers and academics) he stayed in Germany, was strongly held against him after the war. A superb collected edition of his works appeared in the 1960s, and stimulated some impressive studies of his work (e.g. those by Peter Sprengel), but the tide of critical and public opinion remained negative. A few of his plays are still revived from time to time, but otherwise he is neglected. He was certainly an uneven writer, but at his best (as in 'The Weavers', his novel 'The Fool in Christ Emmanuel Quint', and the Novellen 'The Heretic of Soana' and 'Das Meerwunder') he can arguably rank with the best of his German contemporaries.

Das erste Drama, was ich seit sehr langer Zeit gelesen habe.
Leider konnte es mich nicht besonders überzeugen, dennoch bin ich gespannt auf die Besprechung in der Uni. Bei sowas hab ich ja generell immer das Gefühl, es nicht richtig verstanden zu haben und hoffe, durch die Diskussion im Seminar ein bisschen an Klarheit zu gewinnen. :D

Selten hat mich eine Geschichte so sehr aufgewühlt. Einerseits kann man alle Beweggründe und Handlungen der Charaktere nachvollziehen und doch fragt, man sich am Ende, wie es so weit kommen konnte.

May 25, 2022Μιας και αυτό το βιβλίο είναι ουσιαστικά μετάφραση του Καζαντζάκη του θεατρικού έργου του Γερμανού νομπελίστα Γκέρχαρτ Χάουπτμαν, και όχι δημιούργημα δικό του, είπα να το διαβάσω καπάκι με τα Λήμματα.
Διαβάζοντας αυτό το θεατρικό κατάλαβα πόσο μου έχει λείψει το θέατρο.
Διάβαζα μανιωδώς μέχρι το 2014 που ήμουν μεταπτυχιακός φοιτητής στο Μάντσεστερ, Θεατρική Συγγραφή και Δραματουργία.
Οι απορρίψεις θεατρικών μου από ΡΙΚ και ΘΟΚ έβαλαν το θεατρικό γράψιμο και ανάγνωσή μου στην κρυογονική.
Αλλά αυτή είναι μια μεγάλη ιστορία που θέλει δικό της χώρο.
Γι’ αυτό πάμε στα του βιβλίου τώρα:
Αυτό το έργο θυμίζει αρκετά τον Βασιλιά Ληρ του Σαίξπηρ.
Όταν ένας 70άρης επιχειρηματίας χήρος καταφέρνει να βγει από το πένθος της χηρείας τους, αποφασίζοντας να ζήσει ευτυχισμένος τα τελευταία του χρόνια (εξού και το ηλιοβασίλεμα στον τίτλο) αφού αγαπήθηκε με μια κατά πολύ μικρότερή του κοπέλα, τα παιδιά του φοβούμενα ότι θα χάσουν την περιουσία, επαναστατούν και προσπαθούν με κάθε τρόπο να διαλύσουν αυτή την σχέση, κάτι που θα φέρει τραγικά αποτελέσματα.
Αυτά θα συμβούν στην 5η Πράξη η οποία δεν μεταφράστηκε από τον Καζαντζάκη και δεν παίχτηκε τότε την δεκαετία του 30' για να μην σκανδαλιστεί το κοινό. Δεν παίχτηκε ανολοκλήρωτο το έργο απλά κάποια στοιχεία από την 5η μπήκαν στην 4η ούτως ώστε το δράμα να φαίνεται ολοκληρωμένο.
Αυτή η έκδοση περιέχει και την 5η Πράξη όπως επίσης και τις κριτικές για τις πρώτες παραστάσεις του έργου με πρωταγωνιστή τον Αιμίλιο Βεάκη στο ρόλο του χήρου Ματίας, την Κατίνα Παξινού στο ρόλο της νύφης του Ματίας, και τον Μάνο Κατράκη στο ρόλο του πιστού του υπηρέτη.
Νομίζω οι 50κάτι σελίδες με όλες σχεδόν τις κριτικές της εποχής ήταν υπερβολή. Πάνω κάτω έλεγαν τα ίδια και στα μισά κουράστηκα διότι επαναλαμβάνονταν. Το μόνο αρνητικό της έκδοσης.
Τελειώνοντας την ανάγνωση παρακολούθησα και στο YouTube την παράσταση από το Θέατρο της Δευτέρας με τον Λυκούργο Καλλέργη στον ομώνυμο ρόλο, την Έρση Μαλικένζου στο ρόλο της νύφης του, και τον Πάνο Χατζηκουτσέλη στο ρόλο του μικρότερου γιου.

I surprise myself when I remember that I've already read a few works by Gerhart Hauptmann by now, because I wouldn't say he's my first thought when it comes to assemble a seminar corpus or choose my holiday readings. Very few people read him in academia and yet fewer in the general public, and it's easy to understand why, especially if you read him in the German original and have to cope with the Gebirgsschlesisch that some of his characters speak. Nevertheless, every book I've read by him so far (Rose Bernd, Bahnwärter Thiel and now Vor Sonnenaufgang) has been a ravishing one. Not only was Hauptmann a master of the spoken word, but he possessed an incredible feeling for human behavior too: though really simple, the action in Vor Sonnenaufgang never turns melodramatic in spite of its typical naturalistic themes and approach, and the way he dramatically processes the premise of the impossibility of self-determination on account of the conditioning that milieu and genetic inheritance inflict on us is still brutal, but aesthetically coherent and revolutionary.

Ich muss zugeben, ich habe vermutlich die Hälfte aufgrund des Dialektes nicht verstanden. Volkswirt Loth möchte eine Milieustudie über die örtliche Bauernschaft schreiben und kehrt bei seinem alten Jugendfreund ein, welcher in eine zu Reichtum gekommene Bauernfamilie eingeheiratet hat. Dessen Schwägerin Helene ist, ganz anders als der Rest der Familie, weder Alkoholikerin noch ungebildet und verliebt sich in Loth. Das Drama ist komplexer als die Zuordnung zum Naturalismus vermuten lässt, so ist es nicht so, dass Hauptmann eine reine deterministische Logik zeichnet, in welcher den Figuren keine Handlungsmöglichkeit bleibt, sondern die These der sozialen Determination wird als nur eine der Positionen der zeitgenössischen Wissenschaft präsentiert. Diese wird schließlich auch als faule Ausrede Loths genutzt, um Helene doch nicht heiraten zu müssen, da er fürchtet, sie werde auch Alkoholikerin. Auch seine Positionen zur Emanzipation der Frauen bleiben hohl, was ihn ebenso voller Doppelmoral zeichnet, wie die anderen Figuren des Stücks. Am Ende stirbt Helene nicht aufgrund ihrer Herkunft und ihres Umfelds, sondern aus Liebeskummer und Verzweiflung wegen ihres selbstgerechten Werbers Loth.

Welcher Wichser dachte es wäre eine gute Idee dieses beschissene Buch zu schreiben ich schwöre wenn ich noch einmal irgendetwas über dieses Buch höre fahr ich mich gegen den nächsten Baum.
Der bescheuerte und unverständliche Schlesische Dialekt macht das ganze Drama noch um einiges schlimmer. Ach und ehm Die Tante hat Ihren Neffen gefickt also.... Joa war ganz geil auch das der Vater seine Tochter angemacht und begrabscht hat 10/10.
Übrigens, mega geil das Loth Helene instant verlässt als er herausfindet das Ihre Fam Alkohol trinkt. #ripAlene.
Noch um etwas hinzuzufügen: Fick dich Gerhart Hauptmann.

Es scheint mir verwunderlich, dass ein so grobes Drama mich dermaßen zu begeistern vermochte. In seiner Darstellung des Niedergangs der Familie Krause ist es doch recht vereinfachend, jedoch unbeschreiblich effektiv.
Die fein gezeichnete (jedoch freilich ziemlich stereotype) Figur der Helene als an ihrem Umfeld leidende zarte Seele, jedoch auch als Parvenu, der sich seiner Herkunft nicht entledigen kann und an dem ihm fremden Platz in der Gesellschaft verzweifelt insbesondere beweist ein enormes schriftstellerisches Können.

Wer sagte Naturalismus sei "forcierter Elendsrealismus"? Jedenfalls hatte diese Person Recht! "Vor Sonnenaufgang" ist dennoch auf eine reibi-reib-Art gut: Lauter eklige Scheißpersonen, die da kollidieren. Das epochenverschuldete Dumme lässt sich ertragen. Gut zu unterrichten.

Passend zur Epoche des Naturalismus befasst sich dieses Werk mit dem Alkoholkonsum der wohlhabenden Bauern. Diese Degeneration führt dazu, dass die Protagonistin Helene hofft, mit dem Familienfreund Alfred den schrecklichen Verhältnissen ihrer Familie zu entkommen. Als er von der Alkoholsucht der Familie erfährt, stößt er diese allerdings zurück, weshalb sie sich das Leben nimmt.
Ein perfektes Beispiel für die Epoche des Naturalismus. Befasst man sich mit deutscher Literaturgeschichte wird man in jedem Fall auf dieses Werk stoßen.

Ich hatte ein bisschen Schwierigkeiten, den Dialekt zu verstehen. Dennoch würde ich sagen, dass Hauptmann ein echt naturalistisches Drama geschrieben hat. Ab dem dritten Akt war es wirklich interessant!

Ich habe das Buch für die Schule gelesen und ich bin sehr überrascht darüber, wie sehr ich es mochte. Es war ziemlich spannend und ich wollte immer weiterlesen. Die Dialekte waren manchmal schwer zu verstehen, aber insgesamt empfehle ich euch dieses Drama!

ich musste es für mein studium lesen aber dies werk ist jedoch im alltag gut lesbar. ich fand die alkoholfrage und die behandlung und darstellung des umfeldes als etwas, durch das die menschen bestimmt werden, ganz interessant. allerdings macht mir der selbstmord von Helene keinen sinn… ich meine, es kann schon als eine Befreiung oder als eine Flucht vom Determinismus betrachtet werden, aber Hauptmann irrt sich, weil Loth ihr eine Alternative bieten konnte (vielleicht betrachte ich es aus einer heutigen Perspektive…)

Ich habe dieses Drama im Rahmen eines Uni-Seminars gelesen und war wirklich begeistert.
Es ist sehr tragisch, aber es fühlt sich in keinster Weise künstlich an, ich glaube das liebe ich am Naturalismus. Die Charaktere sind Opfer ihrer Umstände und das gibt einem eine Mischung aus Frust "Es müsste nicht so sein" und Anteilnahme im Sinne von "Du konntest es nicht besser wissen". Die Herkunft und der Aufstieg der Figuren zu Neureichen ist sehr interessant und so gut kontrastiert mit ihrem "bäuerlichen Kern" - wunderbare Milieustudie.
Man kann einfach nur mitleiden, besonders mit Helene, und sich über die heutigen Erkenntnisse der Wissenschaft freuen.

The truly frustrating thing about Naturalism (as the literary period which this book is a representative of is called in Germany) in my opinion is that the end of each and every story is already determined from the outset. If the father is an alcoholic it automatically means that the son will end up succumbing to alcoholism as well, no matter how much he may dream of possibly breaking out of his destructive surroundings. The same holds true for this drama. There are no surprises as the reader can predict the outcome from the very first scene - and I'm not really into those sorts of plots :).

8.3.21 So, mittlerweile habe ich es gelesen. Hat mir erstaunlich gut gefallen. Dachte ja immer naturalistische Literatur ist nichts für mich. Die Prüfung damals habe ich mit Wikipedia Artikel übrigens trotzdem geschafft.

Hatte mit der Sprache teilweise ziemliche Schwierigkeiten: Alter Berliner Dialekt.
