Upstart Talents: Rhetoric and the Career of Reason in English Romantic Discourse, 1790-1820
Mulvihill (English Romanticism, U. of Alberta, Edmonton) considers the use and abuse of rhetoric by members of various political constituencies in English public life from 1790 to the end of the Regency. Opening chapters examine the techniques of rhetorical imposture in practical guides to rhetoric, parliamentary speaking, and the queen's trial in 1820. Next, the writings of William Cobbett are discussed. Finally, the rhetoric found in narratives of several well-known Romantic texts, including Mary Shelley's Frankenstein , is analyzed.
