No Shame #2

No Limits

Rate this book
Josh is convinced he’ll never find someone who’ll love him the way he is. He’s not exactly a catch with his PTSD, which has transformed him into a homebody most of the times. Sweet, maybe, but also boring as hell. Plus, there’s that submissive tendency he recently discovered and is dying to explore. His complicated relationship with Noah and Indy don’t make it easy, either. When Connor shows interest in him, he can’t believe the sexy cop would look at him twice, let alone make an effort to get to know him. When he does, Josh discovers they have more in common than he’d ever thought possible.
Connor had survived the ordeal that left his best friend and fellow Marine dead, but that survival came at a price. He’s a robot, going through the motions, but barely alive. Until fate intervenes when he meets Josh. The vulnerable man triggers all kinds of protective and dominant urges in Connor, but what would a cute guy like Josh want with an inexperienced, closed-off, bossy steamroller like him?
When Connor discovers his past endangers Indy, all hope for a future between him and Josh seems lost. After all, there’s no way Josh will ever choose Connor over Indy’s safety and Noah’s lifelong friendship. When a crisis hits, can Connor prove he’s strong enough to deal with everything that’s thrown his way?
No Limits is a steamy M/M romance that ends with a HFN, but has a continuing storyline as well. It’s the second book in the No Shame Series, and IS NOT A STAND ALONE NOVEL, so make sure to read the first book (No Filter) first. It contains hot sex, a little BDSM kink for beginners, more hot sex, and a beautiful friendship that transcends labels. Also: trigger warning for mentions of sexual abuse.

Would you like the long or the short version of my bio?

The short? You got it.

I write steamy gay romance books and I love it. I also love reading books. Books are everything.

How was that?

A little more detail? Gotcha.

I started writing my first stories when I was a teen…on a freaking typewriter. I still have these, and they’re adorably romantic. And bad, haha. Fear of failing kept me from following my dream to become a romance author, so you can imagine how proud and ecstatic I am that I finally overcame my fears and self doubt and did it. I adore my genre because I love writing and reading about flawed, strong men who are just a tad broken..but find their happy ever after anyway.

My favorite books to read are pretty much all MM/gay romances as long as it has a happy end. Kink is a plus… Aside from that, I also read a lot of nonfiction and not just books on writing. Popular psychology is a favorite topic of mine and so are self help and sociology.

Hobbies? Ain’t nobody got time for that. Just kidding. I love traveling, spending time near the ocean, and hiking. But I love books more.

3.5*

This is far better plotted than book one was but it still doesn't seem to be able to make its mind up about what sort of story it is.

There's elements of BDSM, elements of possible poly relationship, elements of crime thriller and elements of military comfort but it's all jumbled up together.

There's also the odd grammatical errors, this one's stand out being Connor admitting he's gay being a momentum occasion instead of a momentous one. They stand out for me probably more than they would for a casual reader because I was a journalist and sub-editor for almost two decades.

Now, having said all of the above, I found Josh and Connor's relationship development to be well done, the Dom/sub nature making good sense as a method for Josh to deal with his PTSD and it didn't give me any magic dick feelings.

Although, speaking of, the descriptions of Connor's and his inhibitions about it were both hilarious and beautifully emotional at the same time, proving it's not just men with small penises who might have hang ups. It was handled well and worked within the narrative.

Plus, for all the seriousness of a lot of the plot, there was also a good amount of humour in this one to temper the serious elements. It'll be interesting now seeing what happens with Josh's wayward brother and how Indy's criminal threats from his past get resolved.

#ARC received from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

3-3.5 stars

compared to book one this one was way more entertaining and i think that josh and connor have a better connection than indy and noah.

this one i think flowed better, while yes this was very insta love i didn't let that bother me since it worked with the situation.

i do think this ended a tad abruptly, but it will be interesting to see how book three goes, being aarons book (josh's brother).

4.5 stars. I am really enjoying the non formulaic, original plot and characters that this book series is offering. For real, these characters don't totally follow the normal "romance" patterns and it's so f*cking refreshing I could cry. Their lives are messy, their decisions are not perfect, their love is deep in many different ways and they all work toward propping each other up through their various neurosises.

So, yeah, if your romance has to come with clear boundaries and single minded devotion this book might not be for you. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely single minded devotion but these relationships are big enough to hold onto the other relationships that are just as important to them. Honestly, I was a little disappointed when the couples paired up more exclusively from the last book. This change is healthier for all of them right now but it also diminishes the importance of the past relationships slightly. Honestly, it feels less organic of a change and more like the author caving into hetero-normative expectations that judge "monogamish" relationships that she didn't seem to lean on in the first book. I think she was a lot braver in the first book and I want that back. I hope that once these guys settle into their lives and find alternative ways to deal with their pain they can find a way back to each other in all the ways that connect them.

Again, this is a cliffhanger ending so if that bugs you keep waiting out the series until all four books are published.

It was a good touch that Nora Phoenix brought in the need for some BDSM but did it responsibly and with thought. The fact that she had Connor seek out professional help was unexpected but helped to give a reader that is not familiar with, or has the wrong impression of the lifestyle, some honest prospective. The lifestyle is about individual needs more than anything else. Pain is sometimes a part of it and sometimes its not. Josh's need was mainly built around Conner's dominance, but Connor wanted to do everything to not only give Josh what he needed but protect him in the process. I really liked the first book but this one I totally loved and can’t wait for more of each of the partner's stories. This author had the wonderful ability to weave a story with all the situations interweaving. It's a story about broken heroes, and this one has four! I also thought at first that this was a ménage story...but it isn’t. Sure, these men have crossed the line becoming more than just four friends...but that isn’t what the story is about either. It's about learning to draw trust from your significant other and build strength from it. I am really looking forward to the next book, hoping that Indy’s past doesn't catch up with him or the other three guys. Great series and a really wonderful book.

I didn't like this one quite as much as the first in the series. One of the things I really enjoyed about the first book - the open sexual sharing between the friends and MC's - was missing here. Josh get's a boyfriend in Connor, who is very possessive and not open to Josh sleeping with anyone else. Maybe that changes but I missed that dynamic. And I know that it was portrayed as Noah and Josh being codependent and the sex between them not being healthy, but the way it was written seemed really sweet and driven by mutual caretaking, which I love.

The kink exploration between Connor and Josh was interesting, but it had one of my personal pet peeves. At one point Connor tells Josh that Josh can't cum without permission. Then later, Connor takes off Josh's cock cage and gives him a blow job until he comes, but he doesn't actually give Josh permission to cum - it's just "implied by the actions", I guess? It just bothers me that it wasn't written in that Connor used his words. I think this was even more noticeable because Josh keeps talking about how he always wants to be open, and say things out loud. It's been made a big deal of. And then they just don't talk?

In general Connor and Josh seem to lean into the undernegotiated kink thing, which works sometimes, but just wasn't my favorite here. Josh says he trusts Connor and will do anything he asks, but is that really a good approach with someone who's been sexually assaulted and has PTSD? I'd personally have felt a lot more comfortable if there had been on page discussion when they tried new things, at least once. And not just Connor trying something, and then feeling guilty that he hadn't asked Josh about it afterwards, and it turning out OK because they're just so magically in sync.

Overall 3*, I can't say I'd definitely recommend it, but plan to keep going with the series.

No Limits is the second book in Nora Phoenix's No Shame series, and a far as I'm concerned, this one's just about perfect.

I love a continuing story where the main characters stay involved in the plot. New folks come and go, sure, but the relationships between the guys we fell in love with in the first book keep evolving and become more interesting. It's a fantastic way to do a series.

Also, I gotta say, the ratio between ridiculously hot sex and plot development is ideal. Watching Josh and Connor discover what works for them was fantastic. The connection they make helps them become a happy couple, as well helping them come into their own as strong and healthy men. They're so passionate together, and Nora Phoenix truly captures all of this in No Limits.

And speaking of capturing the essence of the story, I’ve got to give a huge 5 stars to Kenneth Obi for his spectacular narration. He truly brings these men to life, all their emotions and each character's unique personalities... it’s amazing.

I highly recommend this fantastic series, and if you’re an audiobook fan you're going to really enjoy Kenneth Obi's performance. I understand the audiobook version of the third book in this series, No Fear, is due out any day and I cannot wait!

I guess this one is like marginally better than the first if only because there is a semblance of plot but I'm super frustrated that the details that are in Healing Hand don't actually make any sense from the actual story. So not only does Noah not even talk about any of his friends in the ER department which is where he knows the MC from Healing Hand, but Connor and Josh also don't go to Ford for their d/s training. Like why would you make up facts about a book. The Slow Hand and Healing Hand books came out after this series so there was literally no reason to lie about it. And now I'm annoyed. Also this one is still maybe 50% of sex. Maybe more. I don't know. Also I have these as an audiobook and I hate the narrator. I don't know what he is doing but it's bad and so I've just resorted to reading them as ebooks and I'm just forgetting that I own the audiobook because absolutely not.

I don’t even know what to say. I thought the first one was insta-love but this one...seriously. The MCs are saying ILY after A WEEK. I don’t get guys to tell me they love me after YEARS together.

Am I going to keep reading the next ones? Probably. Now I need to see how everything is gonna end. I already know, from a spin-off book, that there’s going to be a character in this series who has a condition that makes him fell horny and hard randomly. I mean whaaaaaaat? I need to read this.

ETA: Did a reread on 05/13/24 and the book lost a star. I had forgotten that Josh and Connor were making love declarations after three short meetings, and one date that didn’t ever end? I dunno, but it was like day two of that date that the declarations were being tossed around. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I lost a bit of respect for the characters when it comes to how they treated/interacted/viewed Josh’s brother Aaron. He shows up at the door beaten with his world falling apart all around him. It makes sense that there would be some initial wariness and distrust because he sided with the parents when Josh came out. My question is what the hell else was he supposed to do? He is the younger brother, he still needed a place to live since he was presumably still a youngish teenager. Should he have stood up and said, “Oh hey Mom and Dad, Josh isn’t the only gay son you have?” Come on… in what universe would that make sense? He is described as spoiled and he is villainized when after 6 days he hasn’t found a job and a new place to live. Wtf??? He was beaten when he arrived… in what world would employers be jumping to hire someone who looks battered? He isn’t allowed to heal? I dunno, maybe that one small thing shouldn’t be such a big deal, but to me it showed how unsympathetic these characters were for anyone outside their personal bubble. I didn’t get the impression that even knowing Aaron was gay made any kind of dent in their perceptions. They could be so loving and supportive of each other, but f*#k the brother, he’s on his own. I don’t know why I didn’t notice it the first time around, maybe I needed to hear it narrated to pick up on the behavior. 🤷‍♀️ Otherwise I feel much the same about the rest of the story.

Nora Phoenix has created yet another series that weaves the lives of several people together that brings out all the feels.

We get introduced to Connor and Josh in this installment and holy hotness!!! These two have off the charts chemistry and the steam is intense.

We get more insight into Indy and his backstory in addition to some plot twists that keep you flipping those pages to see what happens next. Highly recommend this book!

This was a great continuation from No Filter. I was excited to see Josh and Connor together, and they did not disappoint. I wasn’t sure how things would work out with Indy and Noah from the first book on the sidelines, but I’m happy with the way it was handled. I liked that we not only got POV from Josh and Connor, but Noah and Indy where appropriate as well.

There are underlying themes running through these books of taking power back for yourself, accepting responsibility for your actions, and how important open communication is to friendships and relationships. So even though there are lots of sexy times (with some D/s this time) and some action (vigilante justice for the win!), there are just some great character-building moments that made me fall in love with all of these guys. I’m looking forward to the third in the series, and am glad they’re being released fairly quickly so I don’t have to wait long.

*Update: After having finished the series and having reread this (and the whole series), I'm upgrading it to 4.5 stars, because I liked it a lot more once I knew the entire story, and I predict many rereads in the future.*

3.5 stars.

Josh is the sweetest, so seeing most of the story from his POV was definitely a plus. Also, seeing him finding his happiness with Connor both in love and in dom/sub sex made me happy inside.

That being said, there is A LOT of sex in this one. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I am really liking the plot of this series, so the sex scenes are a little too frequent for my liking when I'd just like to see them solve their obstacles and find their HEA.

This was definitely way more entertaining than the first book. In this book we get to see more character development and more of a story line forming. Josh and Connor are figuring out the dynamics of their relationship. As their relationship develops we get to learn more of their background stories. Ever since book one I was curious as to what happened to Josh in the past and we get to learn all of that and my heart was really hurting for him.

I really enjoy these characters as each one has a way about them that makes them completely captivating. Josh, Connor, Noah and Indy have a very weird and at times confusing relationship but it’s actually starting to grow on me. These four men continue to bond as well. I love the fierce loyalty and protectiveness that they have for each other.

This author throws in some action that I was totally digging. I loved loved loved it and let me just say, Indy is one fucking badass!!! As the story continues to unfold, I’m sitting on the edge of my seat to see the outcome. I’m definitely seeing this through as Nora Phoenix has me completely intrigued and falling in love with these guys.

Josh and Connor finally get their start to this series. I started feeling very attached to sweet, shy, damaged Josh in No Filter, Book 1 of the No Shame series. He is so selfless in the amount of himself that he gives for others that he cares for. With Indy it's a chance to see what intimacy and sex can be, with Noah it's relief from pain, companionship, and unconditional love. They all find love with one another in a way that would normally make me cringe and completely avoid the story altogether but the way Nora puts these men together is something beautiful.

With the introduction of Connor I was nervous that this would turn into an M/M/M/M polyamory book and I was so not down with that. I was skittish enough when it was Indy, Noah, and Josh together. What happens here, though, is a meeting of souls. Josh needs something specific and what he has with Noah and Indy, while comfortable and loving and passionate, doesn't completely fulfill him in all the ways he needs. There's something missing even though he's relatively happy with how things are currently.

Connor has needs as well. He isn't sure what he needs or how to fulfill them because he's so limited in experience. His confidence is shot because of difficult sexual situations he's been in in the past. When Noah gives him the all-clear in No Filter to express interest in Josh he waits until he can't wait any longer. Their first moment together, though, is frustratingly short and no one is clear on anything. Josh decides to go out of his comfort zone and approach Connor because there's a chance that there could be more and he can't let it escape.

From here things move quickly to serious hotness and connection like they've never experienced. It becomes very clear almost immediately that they are what they've been seeking but didn't think they'd ever find. When complications arise with Connor and Indy's pasts clashing it seems like what they've been just starting to build is going to crumble before anything can stick. Indy is important to Josh and while he doesn't want to give up what he could have with Connor, he's committed to keeping Indy safe and happy. The strain on their relationship could mean the end for them.

Indy, however, sees that Connor is probably being truthful and also sees how much Josh needs him. He's willing to try and to stay because of his love for Josh and Noah. There are hints that Connor is holding something back and we don't get to see exactly what that is in this story and I suspect it'll be something rather huge, maybe in No Fear? Despite that something being held back Connor does have the best interests of Indy, and especially Josh, at heart and does what he can to show faith until they can all trust him. With the exception of Noah...maybe.

Noah and Connor butt heads quite a bit in the beginning because of their needs for domination and pecking order in their house of complicated affections. Neither are willing to back down and it's causing some serious tension for everyone. A paintball game and a trip to the E.R. and things can finally find a way to happiness but it's that trip to the E.R. that sends Indy running.

Indy loves Noah so much but can't see past his need to run. He's not running from Noah, not really, but he doesn't see how he can stay either. His past feels like it's nipping at his heels so he goes and attempts to get a new life again. His heart, however, is a much stronger pull and he makes moves to go back to where his heart is home.

When he learns about Josh's own past coming back to haunt them all he goes vigilante and preemptively cuts it off before it can get back to Josh. He is seriously badass and I'm impressed that sweet, tender, scared Indy can be ballsy and determined. His willingness to do everything in his power to protect his chosen family is awesome and I'm even more in love with him.

Overall this is an intense story and I'm very much a fan of where things are going for these couples. Josh is getting what he needs in Connor and moving away from the sexual connection he has with Noah and Indy. Indy is moving closer to Noah and away from the fears of his past. Connor finds perfection in his vulnerable lover, Josh, and is determined to protect them all under the same roof. Noah is willing to let go of his dependency on Josh to give him his freedom to pursue Connor fully and to allow his own relationship with Indy to truly flourish. Each of these men are worth loving and their finding themselves through all the drama that surrounds them.

Nothing is completely resolved, though, because Indy's past is still out there pursuing him. Josh's brother is in the picture. Connor's secret is still a secret. There is a lot of potential for No Fear to be really great and I'm excited to see where things go from here.

Read and very willingly reviewed this ARC for the author.

I liked this second book in this series - but be warned: this is no Stand-alone!!!

I liked Josh in the first book, and I liked him here as well ... most of the time. but his behaviour toward Aaron was in my opinion disappointing.

nevertheless, I will read the next one ... maybe his behaviour will change

Even better than the first of the series! Connor is an amazing guy, and watching his relationship develop with Josh is fantastic. I especially loved their time with Mark. And so many interesting other characters introduced here -- Aaron, Mark, Professor Kent -- can't wait to see if they each get stories!

Always room for more

The addition of Connor into the group works well. It does change how the original dynamic works at first, but they manage to work it out.

I like how open everyone is about sex in these books.

Review by The Blogger Girls.

This is a continuation of sorts to the previous book, No Filter, which I reviewed here. That book established on the relationship unit with Noah and Indy becoming the main couple. That left Josh, who, still part of that unit, needed to find his own match. He found that in Connor, the cop we also met in that story.

Josh has a few issues, namely his PTSD, which causes him to need an understanding partner. He also likes things a little on the rough side, sexually, despite his past, which also adds another layer to his issues. Connor has had a difficult time with being gay, though not for the usual reasons. He is mostly closeted where his job is concerned, and since most of his sexual interactions have not gone well due to his size, he never saw any reason to change that status. But, he is definitely interested in Josh, if they could just each get past their own insecurities. After a few stumbles, they reach a point where they are able to do just that.

There is also the factor of the other men in Josh’s life, namely his relationship with Noah and Indy. It is confusing for Connor at first, and it takes him a little bit to fully understand how they all fit together. Suffice to say, they are all ready and able to make some changes that enable Josh to focus more on Connor, and Connor is very understanding and even gets pulled into the unit a little more as their relationship progresses. The end result is perfect and exactly what each of them needs.

In between all of this, Noah has some issues with his disability, Josh’s past almost catches up with him, Indy’s past is still nipping at his heels, and Josh’s brother, Aaron, turns up, all of which end up making them a stronger unit. Things seem to be moving in the right direction for everyone at this point, but there is no doubt still some trouble coming down the road. The next installment looks to continue the story with a focus more on Aaron’s story, and it should be interesting to see how things work out for him with the martial arts professor, Blake.

This is a sweet story, just as the last, with some interesting twists. I loved watching Connor and Josh explore the dominant/submissive side of their relationship. While not traditional BDSM, it is just the right thing for these two and fits them perfectly. This installment read a bit stronger than the last, and Ms. Phoenix definitely has a knack for introducing details and making them all play out in a way that fits. I’m really looking forward to more and can’t wait to see the rest of this story play out!

Read 10/19

I like a few sex scenes in my romance stories,
with "a few" being the key words.
This was more sex than story.

It got old fast and I started skimming towards the end, ready to be done.

I also got a little tired of hearing about -
The Beast.
It felt like another character in the story, and an unwelcome one at that.

Book 3 was a DNF.

After the first book I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one, and it did not disappoint. First, I want to say that I actively avoid BDSM 90% of the time, but this was so well written and so perfect I couldn't have loved it more. The story continues directly from the first book, the characters continuing to work on complex relationships and work through trust issues. Seriously love these men and this series. I actually gasped "no" when this story ended.

Around 3.5 stars This second book is better plotted than the first one. It's easier to see that this is a part of something bigger and longer. I'm interested to get the while story. I also really enjoy Indy's journey. That keeps me interested. And also Josh. That's why I'll go on.

No Limits is the second book in Nora Phoenix's No Shame series. Note that this series absolutely must be read in order, so you shouldn't be reading this unless you've finished No Filter. Here's what you can expect:

❤️ MM romance with a polyamorous relationship (no cheating)
❤️ Third person multiple points of view
❤️ Cliffhanger that continues in No Fear
❤️ Hurt/comfort
❤️ Found family
❤️ On the run with a hidden identity
❤️ Three military veterans
❤️ PTSD representation
❤️ Amputee representation
❤️ Relationship with D/s dynamics and an exploration of kink

This series is very unique to anything I've written before. Since you shouldn't be reading the second book without having completed the first, I'll give an overview of the dynamics but feel free to skip if you'd prefer to go in blind. No Limits mainly focuses on the developing relationship between Josh and Connor, however, Noah and Indy's relationship from No Filter continues to develop, and we get multiple passages from their points of view. The relationship between the four men is complex and continues to grow, and I've never read anything quite like it. There's no cheating, and all parties are consenting.

I fell in love with Josh in No Limits, and I was so excited to see him and Connor together. Now that I understand how the series is structured, I felt less blind going into this story. I can totally see how one could be addicted, because as soon as I closed the first book I knew I had to dive into the second book. Josh was so sweet and endearing, and as we learn about the trauma he's endured, I think we can understand just how he triggers all of Connor's possessive instincts. I absolutely loved how their D/s dynamics were portrayed, despite them both being so new to kink. It made a lot of the inconsistencies and missing pieces in Josh and Noah's initial relationship make sense. Again, there's a strong sense of communication and emotion between the three men, and seeing Connor thrown into the dynamic was very intriguing. I imagine we'll be seeing how things progress in the remaining few books, even though the main couple will be shifting in No Fear.

I don't want to give anything away, but once again, the sex in this book was beautiful and healing, including the kink. I loved the emphasis on safety and aftercare, as well as trust. I was frustrated with Noah for being so hard-headed in this book, if you know you know. I also wasn't sure what to expect from Connor because Josh is just so precious, he deserves the world. I definitely didn't need to doubt Connor for a second, because under the dominant cop/ex-Marine's exterior is a man who was born to protect Josh. I really loved how the four of them become this strong family unit. I can't wait to see what's next for these boys, as there's an ongoing suspense/thriller plot that hasn't been resolved yet. If you're open to a non-conventional, beautiful love story, check out No Shame!
