सोमनाथ [Somnath]
सोमनाथ हिन्दी साहित्य के कालजयी उपन्यासों में से है। बहुत कम ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास इतने रोचक और लोकप्रिय हुए हैं। इसके पीछे आचार्य चतुरसेन की वर्षों की साधना, गहन अध्ययन और सबसे बढ़कर उनकी लाजवाब लेखन-शैली है। बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों में सोमनाथ का अग्रणी स्थान है। अन्य विदेशी आक्रमणकारियों के अलावा महमूद गजनवी ने इस आदि-मंदिर के वैभव को 16 बार लूटा। पर सूर्यवंशी राजाओं के पराक्रम से वह भय भी खाता था। फिर भी लूट का यह सिलसिला सदियों तक चला। यह सब इस उपन्यास की पृष्ठभूमि है। 'सोमनाथ' का दूसरा पक्ष भी है जो उपन्यास में जीवंत हुआ है। मंदिर के विशाल प्रांगण में गूंजती घुंघरुओं की झनकार इस जीवन की लय को ताल देती है। जीवन का यह संगीत भारत के जनमानस का संगीत है। आततायियों के नगाड़ों का शोर इसे दबा नहीं पाता। एक अजब सी शक्ति से वह फिर-फिर उठता है और करता है-एक और पुनर्निर्माण। निर्माण और विध्वंस की यही शृंखला इस कथा का आधार है।

आचार्य चतुरसेन शास्त्री ने विनाश, कट्टरता, बर्बरता, लड़ाई, प्यार, नफरत, स्वार्थ, बलिदान, वीरता की इस महान गाथा को इस तरह से बयान किया है कि आखिरी पन्ना पलटने के लंबे समय बाद आपको मंत्रमुग्ध कर देता है। भारतीय लोगों के धार्मिक विश्वास के बारे में इतनी अच्छी किताब। लेखक हमें बताता है कि भारत के शक्तिशाली साम्राज्य के पतन का कारण क्या था। वह उस समय प्रचलित भारतीय समाज के कई पहलुओं और प्रचलित प्रथाओं को भी प्रकाशित करता है। बहुत कल्पनाशील और साथ ही साथ जानकारीपूर्ण उपन्यास। विवादास्पद पुस्तक - एक सच्ची थ्रिलर और साथ ही एक इतिहास की किताब।

After Vaishali ki Nagarvadhu, I was expecting a repeat performance from Somnath and Acharya Chatursen delivered it.
It's yet another compelling fiction based on a historical event. The language is not as difficult as Vaishali ki Nagarvadhu. My only concern while reading this novel was, how much of it is true and how much is fictional. I didn't want to fall in a trap of drawing an opinion about Mahmud of Ghazni and other real people from this story. The end of the book contains notes from the author, describing how he got to write this book, how he sketched out the characters, who all existed and who were fictitious, what do various historic records say about those real rulers.
As one reads this book, one cannot but help taking sides with the invader Mahmud at times, while criticizing the invaded Rajputs for their flaws. And the author says how he didn't want to paint his characters in well defined colors of black and white, but paint everyone in red, because that's how people are in reality.
The end notes probably answer most of the questions readers would have, and reading it feels as if one is having a conversation with the author.

Somnath is my first book by Acharya Chatursen. I have a couple more on my TBR list. Its a very fine piece of literary genius. However, it took me a couple of chapters to get into the rhythm of the story, and the language was so pure that it was difficult to understand and visualize the scene unfolding before me in some places.
Though its a work of fiction, the writer has built the story around the characters and places that were there during those times, as one can see from the account of history he has put in of that period after the story ends. This historical sketch, the idea behind the story and the research gone into it, given in the last 40-50 pages by the author, nicely rounds up the book for me.

आचार्य चतुरसेन का यह उपन्यास सोमनाथ के मूर्तिभंजक आक्रामक महमूद का कथानक कहानीकृत रूप में प्रस्तुत करता है। चतुरसेन इस उपन्यास को लिखते समय भारत के विभाजन काल में थे। उन्होंने इस्लाम के वीभत्स और हिंसक रूप को लाहौर में बड़े करीब से देखा। किताब लिखते वक़्त वे गज़नी के उस प्रेत के प्रति दुर्भावना नहीं रखना चाहते थे जिसने मासूम लोगों को मारा और हिन्दू धर्म के महान ज्योतिर्लिंग को खंडित किया। क्योंकि ऐसा सोचना साहित्य के साथ गलत होता। अपने व्यक्तिगत विचारों को अलग रखते हुए एक बर्बर आक्रमणकारी का चित्रण करना एक शुद्ध विशुद्ध लेखकीय प्रतिभा का धनी ही कर सकता था। आचार्य ने वह कर दिखलाया।

For years I had not taken any Hindi book in hand.
I had read Premchand before and my expectations are always high.
This book definitely has raised them higher only.

This is my first read of Acharya Chatursen ji.
His writing style is different from the current authors of historical/mythology.
The time period that is covered in the book is around 7 months and he covers a lot of small
kingdoms too. There are many characters. Important ones have been opened in and out.
Many are left with sketches to be filled with our imagination. (This is where i liked Premchand. Not many characters and every (almost) character is groomed well.)
Also, he did good research, but he has said explicitly in last pages that some (important) characters are imaginative as not much of information about Ghazini is available in history books.

Only one year of hindi in school and then completing a classical hindi masterpiece of 400 pages is more than an achievement for me. Somnath is not a book, indeed its an experience , may be I am not eligible enough to write a review for this book.

Since childhood I have heard about great Somnath temple and Mehmmod Gazani who attacked and looted India 17 times. Somnath was his last attack and most infamous one, through this brilliant piece of work by Acharya chatursen, as a reader I got the chance to go back in that time, saw and feel the pain, sorrow and sacrifices of indian kings like Ghoga-Bapa and Dharam-Gajdev, Vimalshah and selfishness of many. The book is written so well describing each and every details of great temple along with important cities and their kings. We don't have much information about the personality of Mehmood, which writer tried to present as much as possible and got successful. Story is about how a brave and barbaric warrior executes his plan successfully for Somnath attack despite being miles away from the place, having brave kings and kingdoms in his way through his war skills and help from traitors.
Only negative of this book is some important imaginary characters created by writer for a good story but he didn't hide this from the readers. So few details are not accurate from history but since we don't have much facts available so writer tried his level best to uncover this story in best possible way.

Acharya Chtursen is my favorite writer in Hindi mythology, one can't stop reading.

उपन्यास के वह अंश अत्यंत प्रभावशाली हैं, जहाँ महमूद गजनी सोमनाथ मंदिर जाने के मार्ग में पड़ने वाले हर राज्य और वहाँ की जनता पर आक्रमण करता है, मंदिर तोड़ता है, अत्याचार करता है और लूटता है। यह भाग कल्पना पर नहीं बल्कि इतिहास पर आधारित है, इसलिए यह झकझोरता है और पीड़ा का अनुभव कराता है।
किन्तु जब लेखक ने कल्पना के सहारे गजनी का मानवीकरण किया तो वह स्वीकार्य नहीं हुआ। क्या वह लूट का धन छोड़ देता था? क्या वह स्त्रियों को देखकर कुछ अनुचित नहीं करता था? यह सब इतिहास नहीं, कोरी कल्पना है।
शोभना का प्रसंग तो और भी अप्राकृतिक प्रतीत होता है। पहले उसने अपने प्रेमी को गजनी का साथ देने से नहीं रोका, जबकि उसके प्रेमी ने उसे बताया था कि वह मुसलमान हो गया है और गजनी के साथ मिलकर अपने ही देश के लोगों को मारेगा तथा सोमनाथ मंदिर तोड़ेगा, तब भी उसने कुछ नहीं किया।और जब सज्जन सिंह ने सूझबूझ से गजनी और उसकी सेना को रेगिस्तान के बवंडर में फँसा दिया और अमीर मृत्यु के कगार पर पहुँचा, तब शोभना उसे बचाने पहुँच जाती है। जबकि शोभना जानती थी कि गजनी कितना आक्रामक है, उसने इस देश के साथ क्या किया, सोमनाथ मंदिर के साथ क्या किया, और चोला रानी के साथ क्या करने वाला था। हम तो सोच रहे थे कि जब अमीर को यह पता चलेगा कि शोभना चोला रानी होने का ढोंग कर रही थी, तो वह उसे मार डालेगा, लेकिन यहाँ उल्टा एक अजीब प्रेम प्रसंग चला दिया गया।

This books provides cinematic description about the destruction of Samanth Temple by Mahamud of Gazni during tenth century. Although historians had mixed opinion about this incident of the history.
The presentation style of Acharya Chatursen is phenomenal. This book can be developed in movies/series. It has romance, revolt, destruction, drama, politics and all other components needed for a movie. The compelling writing style of Acharya doesn't let you believe that this is just a fiction based on historical event.
Although it is told that King Bhima I of Gujarat fled the battlefield during the invasion, Acharya had shown him as a valiant warrior who was escorted by his comrades during battle. I am not sure who is historically accurate. Mahamud of Gazni returned to his homeland but couldn't take any of the jewels and money he looted. Acharya made him very pitiful at the end. It might have been done to please the Indian readers but I don't think it as one of the honest description by the writer.

मैंने कुच्छ वर्ष पहले ही एक नॉवेल पढा था "अल्लाह उदल के वीर गाथा "जिसके हर चैप्टर में युद्ध होता था तदुपरान्त शादी होती थी
यंहा शादी तोः नहीं होती पर एक के बाद एक युद्ध होता रहता हैँ यंहा तक के सोमनाथ की फतह के बाद भी ये ख़तम नहीं होता
कहने को तो सोमनाथ के फतह की कहानि हैँ पर ये अनुसरण करति हैँ गजनी के सेनापति की. अमीर -इसका मुख्य पात्र हैँ
शुरू में ही हमें नाम और रियासते जिन्हे अमीर को पर करने हैँ सोमनाथ तक पहुंचने में....
पूरा नॉवेल उन्हें एक के बाद एक पार करने में लग जाते हैँ
वह रास्ता मांगता हैँ नहीं मिलने पर वह युद्ध करता हैँ
लालच देता हैँ

Minor fiefdoms ruled by petty-minded individuals with delusions of grandeur, plagued by silly jealousies and perceived insults. Instead of putting up a united front to the invading hordes – they behaved traitorously and let the fanatical hordes conquer the country, loot the treasuries, rape, reave and desecrate temples.
The writing style is a bit hyped and needlessly detailed at times and goes into he realm of fantasy rather than remains faithful to historical accuracy. Nonetheless, quite engrossing.

If you've already read Vayam Rakshamah and Vaishali ki Nagarvadhu, this title won't appeal you as much. Still a good read if you are a fan of Acharya Chatursen ji.

प्रस्तुत किताब उन बातों को बताती है की महमूद जब गजनी से पट्टन जाने के लिए निकला तो रास्ते मे उसे कौन से राज्य पड़े ? उनमे से कौन से राजा ने उसे आगे बढ़ने के लिए रास्ता दिया और कौन से राजा ने अपने कर्तव्य का पालन किया ? लेखक को इस विषय पर लिखने के लिए पूरे 25 सालों का इंतजार करना पड़ा क्योंकि इस विषय पर ज्यादा जानकारी उपलब्ध नहीं थी | इसलिए फिर उन्हे बहुत सारे गुजराती ग्रंथों का अभ्यास करना पड़ा |
