14 books9 followersসাগরময় ঘোষ (২২ জুন, ১৯১২ - ১৯ ফেব্রুয়ারি, ১৯৯৯) একজন স্বনামখ্যাত ভারতীয় বাঙালি সাহিত্যিক যিনি কলকাতা থেকে প্রকাশিত দেশ পত্রিকার সম্পাদকীয় দায়িত্ব পালন করে জীবন্ত কিংবদন্তীতে পরিণত হয়েছিলেন। ১৯৯৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে তাঁর মৃত্যুতে লন্ডনের দ্য গার্ডিয়ান পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত শোকসংবাদে তাঁকে বাংলার ‘সাহিত্য ব্যাঘ্র’ হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করা হয়েছিল। মৃত্যুর কিছু পূর্বে ১৯৯৭ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে তিনি বিংশ শতাব্দীর সবচেয়ে দীর্ঘজীবী বাংলা সাপ্তাহিক দেশ পত্রিকার সম্পাদক হিসেবে অবসর গ্রহণ করেন।
তাঁর জন্ম ব্রিটিশ ভারতের পূর্ব বঙ্গে, বর্তমান বাংলাদেশের চাঁদপুরে, ১৯১২ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ২২শে জুন তারিখে। চাঁদপুরেই ছিল তাদের পৈতৃক ভিটা। কালক্রমে নদী ভাঙনে হারিয়ে গেছে সেই পৈতৃক ভিটা। তাঁর পিতা কালিমোহন ঘোষ ছিলেন রবীন্দ্রনাথের সাক্ষাৎ সহচর। মায়ের নাম মনোরমা দেবী। জ্যেষ্ঠ ভ্রাতা শান্তিদেব ঘোষ ছিলেন রবীন্দ্র সঙ্গীতের বিশিষ্ট সাধক এবং ভারতের জাতীয় পণ্ডিত হিসেবে স্বীকৃত। সাগরময় ঘোষ শান্তিনিকেতনে পড়াশোনা করেন, তিনি রবীন্দ্রনাথের সরাসরি ছাত্র ছিলেন। শান্তিনিকেতনে অধ্যয়নকালে কবিগুরু রবীন্দ্রনাথের প্রভাবে সাহিত্য ও সঙ্গীত, সর্বোপরি শিল্পের প্রতি তাঁর গভীর অনুরাগ জন্মে যা প্রয়াণাবধি তাঁর মানসপ্রতিভাকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করেছে।

If there are books that can make the reader feel privileged to have read them, this is one of them. I had bought this anthology in 2017 to read Bengali stories by esteemed writers in their original form (not translated, that is). At the same time, I wanted to improve my command of my native tongue by moving out of a comfort zone where I would be content to read English translations. While reading this volume required me to spend a considerable amount of time flipping pages of a dictionary to learn new words, I can firmly say that the effort was worth it.
Desh is an acclaimed literary magazine that has been in print since 1933. Its Sharodiya (Durga Puja special) editions have been published annually for nearly 80 years now, dating back to 1943. In this compilation, selected stories from the Sharodiya editions (1943-1988) have been included - 55 stories by 55 writers over 55 years of the magazine's existence in the year 1988. While I was reading them, I could not help but feel indebted to the then editor of Desh, Sagarmoy Ghosh, who undertook the onerous task of hand-picking the finest ones from an ocean of narratives penned by the leading names of Bengali literature. Such an endeavour allowed me to discover these tales and form a deeper bond with their prose. This review is my humble way of expressing heartfelt gratitude to the doyens of Bengali literature.
This collection contains the works of a vast array of prominent writers (barring Rabindranath Tagore who passed away in 1941) with names ranging from the Bandopadhyays (Bibhutibhushan, Tarashankar, Manik, and Sharadindu), Narendranath Mitra, Subodh Ghosh, Narayan Gangopadhyay, Syed Mujtaba Ali to Banaphool, Sankar, Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Samaresh Majumdar, Sunil Gangopadhyay, Abul Bashar, and Dibyendu Palit. Female writers such as Pratibha Basu, Ashapurna Devi, Bani Basu, and Nabaneeta Dev Sen adorn this treasure trove as well. Many readers would be happy to know that Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's posthumously published story Corel is also a part of this anthology.
As one might expect, there is a wide range of themes explored through these stories. From Sharadindu Bandopadhyay's Dehantor where we get to experience a spooky incident involving planchette to Buddhadeb Guha's heart-wrenching Indur which speaks of the intimate bond between a grandfather and his grandchild. While Bimal Mitra's America depicts an American man's dismay at the plight of an impoverished Indian family, Shibram Chakraborty's Stree - Maane Istree? portrays the playful bickering between a married couple. Moti Nandi's Kapil Nachche is an account of the distress faced by a family due to the Sanchayita Chit Fund scam of 1980 (without actually naming it) whereas Mihir Mukhopadhyay's liberating tale Neel Aparajita is about a young woman who takes it upon herself to defy her father's choice in the context of her impending arranged marriage. In addition to these, one of my personal favourites is Botrish Number Bichhana by Sanjib Chattopadhyay - an exceedingly well-crafted narrative of an idealistic music teacher who witnesses a degradation of social values and, ultimately, becomes a victim to the acts of opportunistic individuals surrounding him. I am also confident that Sunil Gangopadhyay's Desh Sharodiya tale from 1977, Debdoot Othoba Baarohaater Kanakori, can be considered among his very best.
On a concluding note, I would highly recommend this book to anybody who loves to read stories that, in essence, compellingly capture the inner and outer worlds of human beings. This collection, unquestionably, is an excellent account of the evolution of the short story genre in Bengali.
