Knitting Basics for Beginners: Step by Step Visual by Katrina Gale is a step by step guide through the basics knitting steps. It also includes tips to repairs common knitting mistakes and methods of joining pieces together.
I wish I had Knitting Basics for Beginners when I first learned to knit some 35 years ago. No one has ever explained so succinctly how stitches different and how to best decrease stitches, but my favorite section was on gauging. It is easy for beginners to assume that if they use the needles and yarn recommended in the pattern that the size of the garment will automatically be correct. Gale did an excellent job of explaining why gauge is so important and how to measure it before ever delving into a huge project.
When Katrina Gale titled her book Knitting Basics for Beginners: Step by Step Visual, she was not kidding. She includes many visuals. I first read the book on a tablet and truly appreciated how with a simple double tap, the small images magnified to a size that was easy to follow.
Gales writing style is very conversational and lacks pretension. She could just as easily be your lifelong knitting friend as an unknown author, and that easy within her writing made it easy to understand the instructions and relax. After all, as she mentions in the book. Everyone starts out as a beginner and will feel clumsy at first.
I highly recommend Knitting Basics for Beginners: Step by Step Visual for anyone who is learning to knit or returning to knitting after a long hiatus.
