Tragedy strikes Tia Cartwright at the tender age of fourteen and she employs alcohol as a coping mechanism, to rid the haunting memories. By eighteen she is a full-fledged alcoholic. Attempting to find sobriety, she makes the decision to move, with her cousin Nick, to a place where she had been happy as a child, her parents' vacation house in Maui. Sobering up is a struggle for her. The detoxing more difficult than she realizes. She seeks comfort for her troubles in the ocean and all its surroundings. It's here she encounters the woman on the cliff. A woman with breathtaking beauty and eyes that draw her in. A woman who will change her life forever.
Fourteen is a trying time for a girl, caught in the middle between childhood and adulthood when family support is the most crucial. For Tia, that is also when she witnessed the brutal deaths of her parents the siren call of alcohol turned her into a full-fledged alcoholic by eighteen. With her cousin Nick as her support system, and a paradise retreat to go to, Tia will try once again for sobriety and to calm the raging demons that swirl in her head. Will the gentle lull of ocean waves sooth the cravings she feels or will she find that the pain of detox is too much to bare? If only Tia knew what was waiting for her in her future and how strong she would have to be…
BLINK:BREAKING BRANCHES proves once again that J. Kahele has that special gift of pulling her readers in with heart wrenching drama, then creating a world of chaos for them that we feel every step of the way. She also has the creative power to turn on a dime and throw in a twist that leaves readers hanging from their fingertips grasping for more one more page as quickly as possible!
After meeting Ella, someone she feels she can instantly call a friend, she meets Michael, who is like fingernails on a chalkboard, yet always manages to have Tia’s back. Why would the two hottest people on the island want to befriend Tia with all of her hidden problems? How does she tell them about her past, her illness and still be able to look them in the eye?
Not only will Tia learn there is more to their friendship than meets the eye, she will learn that there is more to fear than a bottle of alcohol and it has set its sights on her. Will Tia finally believe in herself and how special she really is? Will she free herself from the demons of the past to embrace the powers she possesses in the present and into the future?
Didn’t see this one coming and again, J. Kahele has given me hours of both pain and pleasure in a world filled with sun, sand and secrets as one young woman not only discovers who and what she is, but finds an inner warrior willing to stand strong. Fabulous writing from a fabulous author!
I am voluntarily reviewing this complimentary ARC!
I’ve read a few J. Kahele books and this one threw me for a double loop. First, she not only left the adult contemporary world and braved a whole new world of the YA/new adult persuasion, but she did it with a cutting-edge topic like teen alcoholism. But she didn’t stop there. Kahele throws in a helping of the paranormal to raise the genre stakes even more. Add to that, Kahele’s writing seems to get better and better as she moves from page to page, phrase to phrase, and paragraph to paragraph flowing flawlessly.
The plot is solid and there are the usual twists and turns that we’ve come to expect, know, and love from Kahele’s stories. Another thing that stood out front and center was the characters and the character development. Starting with perfectly flawed protagonist Tia Cartwright, Kahele crafts a three-dimensional character that feels strangely familiar: like that person in all of our lives that has been through a lot but seems to eventually rise above it, and we admire them because of it. That’s Tia!
The secondary characters are also well done, so well done in this genre, I had to take a peek at Kahele’s author page. Sure enough, she has daughters. I’m willing to bet they’re teenagers; she writes the characters way too well. And nobody paints a picture quite like J. Kahele. Experience the magic in this beach setting. “The ocean lived and wandered free, happy to flow gracefully with the caress of the wind. A serene piece of heaven, it mystified me with its beauty. The blue sky, sandy beach, and high, rocky cliffs finished the picturesque view, but it was the running of a small child across the mucky shore that brought a memory into my mind.” If that doesn’t bring you to the table…move on. 5 easy stars.
Just when I thought this author couldn't blow me away one more time, she's done it again. J Kahele never ceases to amaze me with her stories and BLINK: BREAKING BRANCHES is exactly why I keep coming back for more! Once I started reading I could not stop! I read this mind blowing story in one sitting.......it is that good! I was racing through the pages but didn't skip one word, I was that invested in the story of Tia and what was going on with her. My emotions were all over the place while reading. One minute I was laughing and the next I'm holding my breath afraid of what was coming! I love when an author can do that to me and J Kahele does it to me each and every time!
Tia Cartwright is a college student who has lost her parents years ago to a senseless crime and she is struggling. She lives with roommates in Maui and one of them is her cousin, Nick. He is trying to help her overcome her alcohol addiction and let the past go, but Tia is so lost. She witnessed her parents deaths and just can't move on. One day at school she meets Ella and the very same day, she meets Ella's brother, Michael on the beach when she gets hit in the nose with a football he just threw. Well, her life is about to change and go in directions she never ever expected. BLINK will have you feeling as if you are sitting on the beach with Tia, feeling the salty warm breeze on your face while trying to figure out how to use your super powers to save the people on the island. Oh yeah, BLINK goes there and its awesome!
I loved watching the relationship between Tia and Michael grow. At first, he annoys the hell out of her, but soon, she realizes he is just trying to help her. BLINK is filled with twists and turns and the paranormal aspect is just crazy! J Kahele pulls her readers in right from the very first page and never lets them go. She just keeps throwing intense situations at you that will have you feeling as if you are right there with Tia and Michael, running for your life. Trust me, everyone needs to read BLINK. You won't regret one minute of reading it! That is why every time she asks me if I want to read and review one of her awesome books, my first response to her is duh, of course! Now the only thing I'm sad about after finishing BLINK is that I have to wait for the second book!
Young collegiate Tia Cartwright is an orphan living on Maui with housemates who have become family. Tia is no damsel in distress, however. She has survived the worst life could throw at her, so feels entitled to live on the ragged edge and drown nightmares in alcohol. After she enthralls Michael Wellington, the man everyone wants (and most have had), she finds that he and a few others use secret super powers to combat a powerful menace to humans in this Hawaiian paradise. Tia’s reckless behavior makes her likely prey—or recruit?—of this mesmerizing malevolent force. Breaking Branches, an aptly chilling title, is a mix of folklore/graphic novel with haiku-like passages tossed in. When Tia is drawn to the warm ocean beach, you would swear you are there yourself. The writing flows effortlessly and captivates. Impressive debut for J.Kahele, well done!
I read the Mine books by J Kahele and thought she could not write any better, until I read this book.
Blink is not anything like Mine, it is more of a thriller book with some definite paranormal characters. I am more of a historical fiction reader and I cannot believe that I have been pulled into yet another one of her stories. Her writing is so simple and real, her vision unique.
Tia is a young woman who lives in Maui and uses alcohol to numb her from the nightmare that haunts her every night, about her parents murder. She meet's the Wellingtons, specifically Ella and Michael. In an instant friendship forms between Ella and Tia, but Michael irritates her to no end, but as the story enfolds, both of them find an attraction deep between them. The Wellingtons, however, hold a deep secret, that is revealed to Tia almost immediately. A secret that would change her life forever.
