When a fly-on-the-wall documentary crew drops in on a night shift in Bath city centre, PC Ellie Grange and her team are fuelled with anticipation at the thought of becoming TV reality stars.
They need it real. They want it uncensored – and they crave a true-to-life experience of the demands faced by Britain's cops on our streets.
It's a beautiful evening – the first night shift of a set in the historic Georgian city… what could possibly go wrong?
The exhilarating prequel to the first Detective Deans novel, STORM LOG-0505.
Former British CID Detective with the Avon and Somerset Constabulary turned crime fiction writer, James D Mortain brings compelling action and gritty authenticity to his writing through years of police experience.
He began writing in 2012, following a chance encounter in a Bath bar with SAS veteran, TV personality and author, Chris Ryan. Using his own real-life experiences within a busy CID department, James creates gripping, fast-paced crime thrillers that will keep you on the edge-of-your-seat until the very last page.
His first series has become a Kindle bestseller both in the UK and overseas. Featuring Detective Andrew Deans, these books are a chilling blend of police procedural and the paranormal.
James has also written a soon-to-be-released novel featuring DI Robbie Chilcott, which will start a new urban crime series set in Bristol, UK.

THE NIGHT SHIFT is the intro into a series featuring Detective Deans (Deano) and his team. PC Ellie Grange is beginning a round of night shifts. Normally, she looks forward to them. Tonight, besides her partner, she is accompanied by a documentary crew compete with cameras.
Not everything goes as it usually does. And even Detective Deans finds himself on the wrong side of a bunch of thugs.
This is a very short story, a great introduction to this team dedicated to rooting out the violence and crime. There's a lot packed into this and it's very well written. The characters are fully defined and I can't wait to see what happens to them next.
I was so impressed with this short story that I went out and got the first full length novel in this series ... STORM LOG - 5050.
This has most things that make a good short story, but the shallow characters wouldn't persuade me to automatically start following a series. There's plenty of action played out at a frantic pace to give an impression of what a night shift might be like in today's police service. The reality TV crew that accompanied it says it all.
Having read Storm Log, the first full length Dean's book, which is absolutely awesome by the way, I was very much looking forward to a little story about him set earlier on his life. It was very gripping. From start to finish I was hooked. So, spend your money, half the price of a latte, sit down for a bit and just enjoy the realism of a typical police night shift. And raise a g!ass to the hard working coppers out there. And don't forget to buy Storm Log also!!!!
This was okay. The characters seemed well crafted and it gave us a good idea of the character of the main character who is going to be the protagonist of the series Mortain is writing. However one thing I found odd was the focus on the female pc who felt like the main character instead of the main protagonist which for me made the story disjointed and clunky. Also it felt like an episode of some sub par police drama. Didn't really like this one.
The story felt stiff, too documentary. I didn't feel the emotion so much as I was told what I should be feeling. The editing needs some cleanup. There is potential here for a series, but it didn't call out to me or suck me in. I felt like I could take it or leave it at the end and will probably leave it.
After serving 30 years in the police force this has brought back the feelings and memories of working a set of night shifts in a city centre beat.Looking forward to the following stories
Fabulous Prequel to the Detective Deano Series. Not long, but ti fills you in on events that are touched upon in the main books. I truly love the way James Mortain writes, a true master of the art.
This might be a short story, but it's certainly a good one, and although I read this after reading Storm Log-0505, Dead by Design, and The Bone Hill, the other books in this series, it was great to read about Deans earlier life in the Police Force, I enjoy reading Police action thrillers, and theses four books are among the best I have read, I certainly hope that Author James D Mortain, writes a lot more books like these.
All I can say is that I am glad that I read the first book in the series before I read this. I certainly would not describe it as a gripping story in any way and it came across more like a simpering love story with lots of darlings. I would recommend just reading the three books in the series and giving this a miss as I feel it could put some readers off.
