Henry Bins has Henry Bins. A sleeping disorder, named after him. He is awake for one hour a day. He wakes up at 3 a.m. then falls asleep at 4 a.m. Life is simple. Until he hears the woman scream. And sees the man leave the house across the street. But not just any man. The President of the United States.
Nick Pirog is the bestselling author of the Thomas Prescott series, the 3:00 a.m. series, and The Speed of Souls. He lives in South Lake Tahoe with his other half, Stephy, and their pup, Potter.
I read this as if it were one book (the five parts total to over 540 pages), and I reckon that is what most people would do. A very charming book and loved the central character of Henry Bins, and also his girlfriend Ingrid. Considering the background of the characters, the plots are quite implausible, but hey – it is a nice book you feel good having read.
Henry Bins has this strange and tragic affliction since birth – he can only stay awake for an hour a day from 3-4 am. After his hour is up, he falls into a slumber, in an almost comatose state with no awareness of what is going on. There are only 3 people worldwide known to have such a condition and it is named as the ‘Henry Bins’ syndrome. So, to explain his situation, Henry introduces himself as ‘I am Henry Bins and I have Henry Bins’.
This condition means that Henry missed out on most joys which others would take for granted – be it company of friends (who would be so accommodative as to meet him at night within his waking time), leisure or even learning. He makes his living trading in stocks and does reasonably well to keep going. While his mother had left a few years back, his dad is his source of support. He soon has a cat for company, and often talks to it.
In the first book, he hears a woman scream from the place across the street during his waking hour. As he rushes to the window to peep out, he thinks he has seen a known and influential person walking out of the house. He is determined to get to the bottom of the matter, and has to deal with a skeptical law enforcement. Ingrid, a cop, who he meets in this book, goes on to become his girlfriend. In the later episodes, he learns more about his mother and his own condition. In the last book, the President is kidnapped and Henry gets involved.
The book ends the central plot logically closed, but with some loose ends concerning his parents. In the afterword, the author mentions that this is deliberate and that he intends to write two more books continuing the series.
An enjoyable read (try not to parse the plots too much), which I recommend for the characterization, and smoothness of the flow.
Reread on 3/12/25. Bumping my rating up to 3.5 stars. Also, After rereading this I think the cat thing is purely in his head, as in he is just pretending to hold conversations with the cat.
I had never heard of this series until I saw it on Book Bub for 99 cents. It looked interesting so I decided to go ahead and buy it. From reading the description I thought it was going to be a darker suspense thriller, which is what I was looking for. This however, ended up being an odd mix of mystery and suspense with some cozy mystery aspects to it. The latter is mainly due to the fact that the main character talks to his cat like he can understand what he's meowing at him, and the cat seems to understand him too. The cat behaves in many other ways that are not realistic for a cat at all as well, and I think it was an odd choice to include this in the series. It's hard to categorize this because there are F bombs thrown in at times along with the cozy mystery aspects, and that just makes it feel off kilter to me. It could have been a really good suspense thriller, but unfortunately I think the attempt at humor with the cat just made it seem far too unreal.
I also thought this was a complete series when I bought it, but when I got to the end there was a cliffhanger and a couple of other unresolved things. The author has said there would be two more books in the series, but it's been 5 years since this last book was published, and all the other books were published within a year of each other, so I'm not holding out too much hope for an ending at this point.
Overall this series was enjoyable, but not very realistic, and definitely not what I was hoping for when I picked it up. There is a nice message about time and how we choose to spend it because, of course the main character here has very little of it to spend with the people he loves. Realistically, I think him having a relationship that lasts would probably be next to impossible, even though he does find someone in the series who loves him enough to try. On a deeper level I don't see how a relationship could work and the challenges with this are not really addressed.
Apparently this has been optioned by Sony Pictures, and I can see the appeal of making this into a suspense thriller type movie or TV show. I'm wondering how much it would end up resembling the original product if it ever gets made though. I think it could definitely be improved upon.
As a whole I'm giving the series 3 stars because although it wasn't what I thought it would be it still kept me entertained and wasn't bad to read. Also these are short novella length books so this really just read like one whole book, but I'll go ahead and add my rating for each individual story here:
This was a surprising delight to read and nothing like I expected. It is smart, fast, and fun. A bit over the top but an absolute joy to read. This is suspense thriller served up with a side of comedy and requires the reader to have the ability to disconnect from realty. If you can manage that then you will love this story.
I fell for the writing, the characters and above all the animals. Not only will I continue reading this series, I'll be checking out the other offerings from Nick Pirog.
I picked up this series of novellas and started reading them last year. I took a break between 2 and 3 and I just finished the series but must say I became hooked! What an original and ingenious idea. Henry Bins is a pretty ordinary guy except for one thing. He is awake only one hour a day, between 3 and 4 AM. His father and his housekeeper help him out so that he can use his hour of being awake most productively. He has made millions in the stock market. Starting with book one Henry finds himself in a series of crazy situations that really challenge his ability to deal with them in only one hour a day. He has help from his dad and later others including a cat by the name of Lassie, who happens to talk. This seems so natural you end up not even questioning it. Henry is also trying to learn about what made him the way he is and his search leads in the most crazy direction! There is a lot of tension and anticipation as Henry navigates his crazy world.
Nick Pirog is a gifted writer with a great sense of humor and a wild imagination that is on full display in these five intertwined novellas. They must be read in order. There are two more installments coming out soon. I can’t wait!!! There are so many twists and turns throughout this story and the mix of drama and humor just keeps you fully engaged. I did pause between 2 and 3 but after that I just couldn’t stop. Definitely recommend this series if you are looking for something different.
It's been almost a decade since a series took my husband and I this much by surprise. It was the first of Charlie Huston's Hank Thompson series, Caught Stealing.
We were searching Audible for a road trip book and this one is currently being offered up as a freebie. Our criteria is we both have to like the premise and the reader sample. Both got 2 thumbs up from us and we were on our way.
Other than taking us by surprise there's really no other comparison to be made to the Hank Thompson series, other than an ability to make us laugh out loud and delightful relationships with a cat. The violence factor is way lower, the sex is merely alluded to, and the action is non-stop and will not let you go. This one is much more suitable to enjoying with your kids of a certain age, and maybe your parents too.
I see Mr. Pirog has just released a new standalone, The Speed of Souls. This one magnifies the fantastical ability to communicate with cats and dogs. It doesn't show as an Audible read on Goodreads yet but I did find it there.
Just what the doctor ordered on a sultry, rainy beginning to summer!
I picked this up as part of my Audible plus subscription and it did not disappoint! The concept of Henry only being awake one hour a day is original and the audiobooks are very entertaining. Henry is very likable, as are the rest of the characters both human and animal. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys fast paced mysteries with a bit of humor and animal antics thrown in. 4 solid stars.
The premise of this book (books? I read it as one) sounds kind of dumb, but it was fun to read! The stories move along quickly, you have to just go ahead and suspend some belief (the talking cat is my favorite, totally unexplained, part!), but it's worth the journey!
4.5 stars. Even though Henry’s condition (being awake for only one hour a day) is really ridiculous, the whole thing seems to work and makes for a very interesting and enjoyable book.
I LOVED this - this was the MOST FUN read in a long time - everything about this was just, well, unexpectedly great. I have groaned inwardly as I've read so many of my fav. authors in the area of Action Adventure over the last couple years because they are ALL starting to feel so redundant. This caught me so off guard that I actually laughed OUT loud (then retreated to mostly silent 'lol's' for the rest of the book)... His over all primos is 'so far out there' that it was actually very 'timely' to read and probably helped me in my own awareness of how much time I waste. Having said that - I felt like I owed to it Nick Pirog, to write this review & I am feeling like this is something that even Henry Bins would take time to do. (read the book & you'll understand). also, a lil' inside joke... I've never been a cat lover - but I actually LOVED the off the beaten path humor. Probably should say I have to take off a star in my rating due to some crudeness in the humor and story line - but easily things that could be skimmed without missing the over all awesomeness and originality of the story line - since the 4 stars instead of 5 - but overall ... FANTASTIC book -
I first read 3 am ages ago and loved the premise behind Harry Bins and his self named disease of only being away for 1 hour each day between 3 am and 4 am. Having such a limited time window to function he manged to be a successful Forex trader, pet owner and sometimes boyfriend.
He has a cat called Lassie who he seems to be able to communicate with and who adds some comedic relief to the serious plots. The plots are far fetched and I have no idea how with a 1 hour window Harry gets into so much predicaments involving murder, the president and keeping a relationship going, but he does and I think for all it is far fetched that is what draws me in to each book.
It was good to read the books a part of one collection as it meant I could just jump right into the next book and pick up the story.
This was a very interesting read. There are 5 short stories that are really just different sections of one long tale. I really enjoyed Henry Bins. He is funny, intelligent and man - what a bummer of a life it must be to only have an hour a day. And Lassie....hilarious! I read a couple of reviews that were criticizing everything from his disorder to the cat behavior.....really? There are books about vampires, werewolves, other dimensions and people are going to criticize talking to a cat? I'll never understand.
Anyway, I read these in an attempt to read something additional from Nick Pirog after only reading his first book and I'm glad I did. I'm off to now continue on with the Thomas Prescott series.
I truly decided to read this because I said no way in hades can you write and interesting book about a person who is asleep 23 hours a day. Not only was I proven wrong he wrote 5 books and I was angry that 6 wasn’t out yet. Henry Bins has Henry Bins disease. At 3 AM he pops up and at 4 AM he drops like a stone no matter where he is or what he’s doing. During that hour Henry’s life is full of unsolved mysteries that he is determined to solve. With the help of his talking cat who loves Justin Timberlake, a loving father and his person sized dog and a hot police detective Henry’s hour is never boring and not a minute is ever wasted. I highly recommend you give it a try.
I could not put this book down! I read in less than two days. Nick Pirog must have a brain and a half! His imagination is amazing and twists are extraordinary! I can't for the rest of the series. Please-- is book 6 done yet??
This is a five-book collection, and I’m going to review all five books in this single review. They are extremely short, highly readable, and if you 3X them as I did, those five hours will fly by.
Henry Bins sleeps 23 hours a day. I envy that; I had less than three hours today and sleeping for 23 would be amazing—but only for a while. Sadly, his entire life has been one in which he slept most of it away. He is awake between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., and he must budget his time carefully as a result. He has five minutes to eat; four minutes to watch TV; a few more minutes to run, etc. His is a regimented life, and no one knows how he developed the compunction to sleep 23 hours a day.
In the first book, he watches as the president of the United States murders a young woman across the street from his Alexandria, Virginia home. Ingrid, a female detective who worked the murder case, will become Henry’s love interest as the books unfold. Good thing she’s conditioned to work the night shift. You can read this to determine whether the president indeed killed the young woman.
In the second book, they find a body floating in the Potomac River, and they figure it’s Henry’s estranged mother. She inexplicably left the family on Henry’s sixth birthday. Henry and his dad have no idea why she left. Perhaps she couldn’t deal with Henry’s bizarre sleeping patterns. Again, reading this will help you determine whether the body in the river is really Nick’s mother and whether she was a terrorist or a CIA operative.
Book three takes Henry to Alaska in the summer so he can finally see a sunrise. But Ingrid announces she’s pregnant, and Henry unravels. He screams about how he doesn’t want a kid, and he storms out of their cabin. While running along a river, he’s involved in an earthquake, and for lots of reasons, he can’t get home to her. Lots of suspense and tension here all amazingly packed into a small book.
Book four was my least favorite. My mind wandered, and I had to work to stay focused. Henry essentially gets a choice to either live a normal life and have his memories wiped completely or continue his one-hour-a-day wakefulness. You can read this to determine what choice he made and why.
Book five includes a wedding as Henry and Ingrid finally bring their marriage to fruition.
Ok, let’s look at some details here. Henry has a cat that behaves like a dog, and the two seem to have deep and meaningful conversations. I mean, the kind of conversations where Henry and the cat thoroughly understand one another. You need to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the banter between Henry and the cat. At least the author doesn’t have the cat speak English. Henry just somehow understands its meows.
As one who is frequently nastily abused by the fickle Morpheus, I gravitated to the idea of a 23-hour sleep. Could I engage in that lifestyle every day? Obviously not, but the concept captivated me.
Welp! I did have high hopes that i would love these books. The plot was something different but I ended up really struggling to finish. I am ok with dispelling disbelief sometime. The MC Henry Bins has Henry Bins. A sleeping disorder, named after him. He is awake for one hour a day. He wakes up at 3 a.m. then falls asleep at 4 a.m. Ok, that's unique. Different. No problem. Got it. In the first book Henry hears a woman scream from her home across the street from him. Henry looks out the window to see the president of the United States come out of the woman's house, get into a car and drive away. I probably should have put this book off to the side after that scene. Henry even eventually becomes chummy and best buds of sorts with the president. I would say the most irritating part of these books was the relationship of Henry and his cat named Lassie. Henry and Lassie would have entire conversations. No one else could understand Lassie but Henry. I listened to the audiobook version so the narrator would speak Lassie's part..."Meow Meow Meow..". Then Henry would respond to his pet. It was cute the first few times but damn! The writing really wasn't bad and the narrator was excellent. The best thing about this was that it was free and included in my audible subscription.
This 5-book collection has a very intriguing concept. Henry Bins has an extremely rare medical condition named after him (he is Henry Bins and he has Henry Bins) that allows him only one waking hour out of 24, always between 3 and 4 a.m. What he is able to do with that one hour a day is thought provoking enough, but "3 A.M." goes down all kinds of paths with Henry getting tied up in murder mysteries, Presidential secrets, clandestine mind-control operations, you name it. Book 5 introduces a chilling plot that is especially relevant, given the state of the world here in the spring of 2022. Each of the novellas picks up where the previous one leaves off and is written in lean, unadorned prose - Henry only has an hour a day, after all, and can't waste time with detailed descriptions. And somehow the fact that he has two-way conversations with his cat, Lassie, does not come across as hokey. Just about none of this book is believable but somehow it works and is great fun. There will be a movie adaptation. It does end on a huge cliffhanger, and there are two more "3 A.M." books planned, with No. 6 coming out in May 2022. I will definitely be checking them out because I HAVE to see where this series winds up.

This is a compilation of 5 novellas. I listened to the first 2, then took a break before returning for the final 3. Each novella has a self contained plot, but they are somewhat related (and should definitely be read in order).
The main character, Henry, has an unusual condition — he is awake only one hour each day. We learn early on how he was diagnosed at a young age and how his dad raised and educated him to be a clever and well-adjusted person.
Henry is a smart and funny character who teaches the reader to appreciate every minute of each day. The minor characters are also interesting. The cat Henry adopts in the first book becomes a key character, although there is a certain characteristic about this cat that is completely unrealistic — and funny.
Henry encounters a series of mysteries, many related to his condition. Despite his time limits, he solves each of these. I look forward to book 6 in the series.
The narrator, Jamie Renell, is perfect for the books.
The book has a very interesting premise about a man who is awake only one hour in a day. The stories itself are a lot of fun with conspiracy and action. Henry also has full-on conversations with his cat who is a crazy character in his own right. He helps him solve some mysteries too, believe it or not.
This is not for realists, you have to suspend your disbelief quite a bit. Some of the plots are better than others and there is a whole thread of mystery on Henry's mom that is followed from book one through to five, and is not solved yet, but somehow morphs into another mystery about his father. The author does a good job at keeping you hooked up for the next installments.
This reminded me somehow of a never-ending mystery of "five adventurers" a series of mystery books I read in Arabic and are based on Enid Blyton's works. Your civilian protagonist solving a mystery, with his cat and with a huge handicap of one-hour days. Very original but gets old after a while.
I read this over a year (one volume five short books).
The creativity of Nick Pirog in this series kept me turning page after page! I had to keep reading to see the next chapter and was always surprised by the unexpected twists. I bought the 6th book as soon as I had completed the 5th in the series set.
It isn’t often I will read a whole series as like many others I have hundreds of books and authors waiting to be read in my Kindle library.
The 3.00 a.m. series is definitely worth the time, which due to the fact it was read quite voraciously was really no time at all!
If you haven’t yet discovered the world of Henry Bins, take a look inside and meet him. I found it intriguing, humorous and thought-provoking. The conversational style of Nick’s writing is so well written and the story believable I’m fairly confident I will remember him and Nick Pirog when I am asked about any good books I have read. Very highly recommended!
When I first read the description of this series, I thought "that's a little far fetched, even for a thriller series". I was right, it is. BUT, it was also so cleverly written and had a real sense of suspense which is credit to Nick Pirog. Each book is fairly short (not a bad thing) so the series works very well. The main character (Henry) is the right blend of brash and sarcastic to pull off the storyline and the supporting cast is excellent - although I'm still not sure if he has a very active imagination or if he can actually talk to his cat?! Anyway - easy 5 stars from me, and I hope the series continues
I just finished listening to all 5 books in the series - and it was so much fun! These books are hilarious and ridiculous and just plain fun. Nick Pirog has a great imagination and an easy style of writing. The narrator is perfect. The books really suck you in! One reviewer commented after only reading 3:00 a.m. that Pirog must have never had a cat before because the interactions with Lassie were exactly opposite of what you'd get with a cat...no, I think he HAS HAD a cat and the interactions in this book are what he would like to have gotten from his cat. Lassie is awesome (and hilarious and ridiculous). That reviewer should have kept reading the rest of the series!
Lighthearted quick read - broken up into a bit of a mini-series. The premise was interesting and the writing is fun; I chuckled out loud a number of times. However, suspend your grounding in reality: the main character is awake an hour a day and find himself involved in saving presidents, fighting terrorists, etc.. Also, his cat communicates with him. At first, I read the cat narrations as hilarious dialogues that mimic the way I talk to pets. But no - the cat apparently speaks to him. Regardless, it's a fast-paced, fun read with tons of witty banter.
Unreal story! I don’t mean unbelievable, but not an OMH story! If you like suspense, a bit of politics and romance, love and other things you have to read this book!📕
Mr. Pirog is an amazing author who drags you into the characters with finess and aplomb! The characters are beautiful painted and filled in and the story almost beyond belief. But believable with what gets filled in. I could almost see this could (have) been real. Maybe it is and we just don’t know. Read it! You won’t regret it.
Riveting mystery, love,adventure, different stories
Couldn't put it down. When I did, I couldn't wait to get back to it. Each story was even more intriguing than the last. Characters are so interesting. They instantly felt like old friends whose lives I could hardly wait to get back to. All five books are so well woven together, it's one long adventure well worth the reading time. Best book I've read in ages. Hats off to the author!
What an interesting story. It makes you think how much you do in one hour nothing like Henry Bens does. These are action-packed stories and there's even a little romance. The animals add to it they're very endearing . Amazing how the guy who only lives one hour a day awake is the one to save everybody all the time. I can't wait for the next couple stories. The last one leaves you hanging just like the previous ones.
Love everything about this series. Who knew there is actually a "Sleeping Beauty" syndrome, (KLS) and patients can sleep for 12 to 24 hours a day. Everything is time sensitive for Henry Bins, and he can accomplish so many things in that time, even courting and marrying. There is even a Star Wars "Luke, I am your father moment, and a Dallas dream season! Love your style Nick. Breathlessly awaiting the mystery surrounding Richard Bins!!!
