Small Deaths

Rate this book
A serial killer is on the loose behind the lines on the Western Front during the First World War. As the armies mass against each other readying for battle, villages close to the front line find their children disappearing. The military is indifferent - civilian problems are not their affair. The police are powerless - the military will not allow civilians to investigate in a war zone. Set against the build-up to the battle of Cambrai in November 1917, this historical thriller builds to an unexpected, heartbreaking finale.

This crime novel, set at the Battle of Cambrai a hundred years ago in November, is a stunning debut by author SW Williams. The novel looks at the life of a soldier, a doctor, and a first aider, as well as the local community and how they have been affected by the war all set against the preparations for the battle. When children start to disappear, the police cannot investigate properly because it is happening in a military zone and the military do not have the time or capacity to get involved in a civilian problem. This leaves the locals to search and investigate for themselves.
A brilliant book and definitely one for the Christmas list!
