Beloved Enemy
Right on elite businessman Gu Qing Pei (Shang Bai)’s first day of work at his new workplace, the chairman throws his vigorous and arrogant son Yuan Yang (Gao Ming) at him. Yuan Yang sees through Qing Pei’s hypocrite mask, but due to his father pressuring him, he can’t hit him. Therefore, Yuan Yang learns for the first time that there are things that can’t be taken care of by money or fists. A masterclass of testing my patience. I was livid with YuanYang. For more than 80% of the time I wanted to throttle him; but the last twenty, the moment the reason for his hatred for Gu Qing Pei erupted, it was such a cathartic eye-opener.
I'm grateful I read it over a span of two months; no way I could've survived this emotional rollercoaster otherwise.
Gu Qing Pei, my heart wept for him, never a moment of peace with how just in his company, it elicits a volatile reaction from YuanYang. How he couldn't think straight because of his needless, heedless infatuation, and his lustful, blindsided sexual appetite. Bloody Gu, since you dare to challenge me, you better be well prepared. I want to see how big your courage is.. 🤨 It viscerally hurt to see the disregard YuanYang showed him.
Y'know, I could've been more forgiving if YuanYang was actually apologetic for his actions that were brutal and nonconsensual. Lording over him with the threat of intent of sex again and again, the memory of revulsion and humiliation and degradation. It's my own fault. Enemies to lovers of opposites attract? *scoff* More like forced manipulation. 😒 The only good was seeing YuanYang see in GQP's disdain, the utter disregard in him of how much of a failure he is. An incompetent waste of space, a princeling that is not worthy of any respect, nor have any real interest in him.

“YuanYang, in this world, it’s likely impossible to find anyone who could torment people as much as you.”
And it hurt to see GQP resign himself to it, when YY was having difficulty processing the difference between obsession rather than admitting actual feelings for him. Author's love to dodge that realization is something I'm used to by now, but that grievance never gets annoying or old. 😮💨 Especially when it's shown that the pleasure Gu Qing Pei receives, or the care YuanYang might show after - because of the abuse GQP has withstood by his hand - counters the raw, rough, primal urges. One apology, one act of contrition could have gone a long way of true character growth.
It was painful for GQP, but the writing's visceral portrayal of his inability to avoid him, his Beloved Enemy, one he loathes for loving him, was a sharp stab. 😣 I never saw them as a healthy couple, the shadow of that wretched video of shameful disgraceful circumstances that brought them together... but...
The side stories were cathartic at how the reckoning of the video came full closure. Add in the personal vendetta of YY's parents being silenced in a heartfelt way that I wished we could have had more of their happiness and acceptance. GQP's internal monologues of woes of their age gap became a bit tedious; like we get eleven years is too much let alone with a guy who doesn't even know how to tie his shoe. I'm exaggerating.
I never felt it was love till their confession, laid out their complaints and grievances with hurtful words that cut through the heart. I didn't feel that it was a compromise, but rather GQP seeing his tumultuous torture from his perspective, despite his possessive self, there was pain for wanting him. 🥺 How he changed his feelings so drastically, never attracted to a man before besides him. *sigh*
“YuanYang, did you ever feel any guilt toward me?”
YuanYang clenched his fist, “I’m willing to make it up to you, but you didn’t give me the chance.”
Each time I hated him, the author masterfully manipulated the situation to appeal to his better side - keen sense of kindness and tenderness and care and dare I say, affection. How he dogmatically denied even these past two years after their initial "adjustment strategy" of no emotions, feelings, or love involved. It was just a game of conquest and contest, he still saw him as someone he could toy with and keep solely for himself. 🙄🙅🏻♀️
I would have loved it if GQP had kicked his ass good riddance. I would not have complained. Even if he wow'd GQP with his apparent business acumen, he still was an immature, impulsive ingrate that even after two years still was serving on a platter is despicable, atrocious, deplorable, ridiculous behavior - a big hooligan that with a twist of words and arms *literally* to get his point across and his way. 😠 He was not worth the lint beneath my show, I hated him, wanted to slap sense into him, like boundaries much! Know your place, your limits!
But... It's a love story. And despite the cruel way in which their love floundered, it was a bittersweet declaration and confession that melted my heart. 🫠🫠 How the person he most cared about in his heart has always been YuanYang… nothing has changed. GQP helpless to YY's tears.. his hugs. his kisses... that vulnerable side that gave him the strength to forgive - what you want is what I want to give you. 🥲
A lot of rage and anger. Frustration and depression. Yet there were brief bouts of happiness and warmth crept through their scathing quick-witted banter that showed that while it had been an ill-fated romance, a few sweet moments of intimacy and fleeting instances of regret and grief proved that maybe they had always been meant for each other. ❤️🩹 A happily ever after that arrived after a rough and tough, beaten and bruised path, but it was when they were finally true to each other that I saw that perhaps it had not all been for naught. 🪷
“That was my purpose. YuanYang. I’ve said, as long as you don’t do anything crazy, I’ll be with you through this life.”

Since I don’t like the book cover. I searched for a fan art instead. This is exactly how the author describes them in the book. This is precisely how I imagine them in my mind.
Two dominant personalities, and the MC with his signature glasses. They're both so hot plssssss ✋
This might be my favorite book from this author so far. It’s a perfect mix of my favorite relationship dynamics: enemies-to-lovers, top turned bottom, older shou and younger gong, and the classic straight, homophobic ML turned gay for the MC. And the dirty talk? 10/10 —ML has such a filthy mouth, it’s insane. 👀 but seriously, how did this book manage to tick all my boxes? 🥹🥹

*I do wish the translation had been better, chapters at the end were a bit rough. still giving it 5 stars because I really enjoyed it. Highly recommend this if you're a fan of Case File Compendium by Meatbun. Same Vibe

Yuan Yang no fue tan escoria como pensé, tampoco es que cambie mucho, al final, sigue siendo un poco bestia y demasiado horny, es un perro leal pero su genio provoca darle zapes, el hecho de que haya crecido tanto profesionalmente en dos años sí me impresionó, aunque su personalidad, es la misma, posesiva e irracional.
Gu Qingpei es tan lindo, me dolió mucho el corazón cuando tuvo que irse a Singapur, fue demasiado para él, a pesar de ser lengua afilada, su corazón es tan suave🥺.
yuangu son muy hornysssss, aaaaa
mis únicos problemas fueron:
1.- Gu Qingpei perdonó al papá de Yuan Yang, NOOOO ODIÉ
2.- Realmente perdonó muy fácil a Yuan Yang, me hubiera gustado verlo llorar tipo Song Juhan, por unos capítulos más.
3.- NO HUBO INTERACCIÓN ENTRE HE GU Y GU QINGPEI, al menos, no se vió en esta novela.
Gu Qingpei es tan lindo, me dolió mucho el corazón cuando tuvo que irse a Singapur, fue demasiado para él, a pesar de ser lengua afilada, su corazón es tan suave🥺.

Inicialmente lo empecé a leer porque hace unos años vi la serie que está basada en este libro, y como es China, censuraron todo lo homosexual que tiene la historia, y quería hacer una comparación. Me ha decepcionado un poco, es demasiado largo como para lo que cuenta, el conflicto se alarga tanto que cuando llegué al final y todo se resolvió en dos capítulos y que el último capítulo se llamara “El final feliz” fue francamente ridículo jaja. Gu Qing Pei como personaje me cayó bien, pero Yuan Yang es horrible, definitivamente no merecía quedarse con Gu, los personajes secundarios se sintieron vacíos, creo que Gu Qing Pei debió quedarse con Wang Jing jajajaja
En fin, al menos lo acabé

I generally don't like to read books a second or third time... But the only exception to this habit of mine is beloved enemy. I absolutely love this book and don't how many times I read and re-read it over and over again for the past two years. It just feels so nice to to read about the main protagonists. Very cotton candy-ish The character development of this book is something that I cherish the most.
I am not saying it is a great book and that everyone should read it or something. On the contrary I wouldn't want many people to read it, as it is one of those genre specific books that won't amuse most. And I don't want to hear anything even remotely negative about it!
But that being for me this book is a friend, a magic, a calming reassurance that always manages to put a silly smile on my face :) and I am forever grateful to the author and the translators who brought me this gift of lovely words!! 🧡🧡🧡
Ps: GuQingPei and YuanYang.. I madly love you guys to the moon and back!

This was on my TBR for almost a year, but I always pushed it back because, well, the title & book cover are a little corny. I only picked it up now just to finish 188 series. It IS amazing. Right now it’s my second/first favourite out of 188. I can’t decide between it and Winner Takes All. What I’m trying to say is pick this up because it gets better and better with every page turn. And check the CW as always with the 188 series.

I could not put the book down and I really liked the MC. I completely understand why some people dont like it as the relationship between the main characters is quite toxic and abusive.
I usually dont read these types of novels but the writing style, plot and MC really captured me.

...Leí esto en exceso durante 3 días seguidos. No he visto el drama... pero no estoy segura de querer hacerlo porque siento que me decepcionará que no se deduzca que es un romance real debido a la censura.
Esta autora no es tan popular en España, pero deduzco que debe serlo en China ya que muchas de sus novelas están adaptadas a dramas de audio y ésta incluso se ha adaptado a un drama de acción real.
Como se menciona en las etiquetas, la mayoría no es consensual y odia el sexo. Incluso hay sexo dudoso que viene con la influencia de afrodisíacos. Así que los lectores que no quieran encontrarse con estos temas deberían volver atrás y no leer nada. A pesar de eso, hay algunos tropes y dulces momentos pero son muy pocos pero impactantes.
¡Esta es mi cuarta novela de esta autora y me he convertido en un gran admiradora de sus novelas! Hasta ahora me gusta más "Beloved Enemy" y "Sissy" (si me gusta sissy pero no soporto a Shao Qun)
Lo que me encanta (de esta autora):
- Escritura y ambientación maduras (excelente obscenidad también): todas sus parejas son personajes que han visto el mundo en el sentido de relaciones anteriores. No son los tipos vírgenes débiles. Aunque también disfruto enormemente estas historias inocentes de luz de luna blanca/loto, también me alegra encontrar historias como Beloved Enemy.
Se sienten más reales y el desarrollo de la trama siempre es tan excelente que incluso transmites más a las parejas. A pesar de su actitud mundana y su vasta experiencia, se enamoran muchísimo el uno del otro, hasta el punto de volverse obsesivo y destructivo, ¡y la forma en que sucede está muy bien escrita y es natural!
- Personajes complejos, desarrollados, defectuosos pero tan atractivos : ME ENCANTA cómo esta autora es capaz de hacer que sus personajes cobren vida.
a) MC suena aburrido solo por la descripción (tipo gerente corporativo), pero ¡GUAU! Es muy elocuente, elegante, inteligente, trabajador, diligente, capaz, exitoso, etc. Se siente muy en deuda con cualquiera que haya sido bueno con él. No tenía antecedentes, pero logró llegar a la cima de la escala corporativa por sí solo. Su mayor defecto es que le importa (demasiado) cómo lo ven los demás. Solo se convirtió en un problema cuando se sintió traicionado y completamente humillado por ML y su familia por dejar de lado estos principios férreos de él sobre cómo mantenerse en la sociedad por la que luchó tan duro.
En resumen, es un personaje 3D completamente desarrollado. Yo también me enamoré de MC y, como lector, entiendo perfectamente por qué ML se enamoraría tanto de MC, hasta el punto de volverse destructivo.
b) ML : todos los ML escritos por este autor son agresivos, extremadamente impulsivos, físicamente la cima de la pirámide en lo que respecta a apariencia, sexualidad y resistencia. El sentimiento es tan crudo y CALIENTE. También siempre tienen antecedentes súper poderosos, pero ML está acostumbrado a comida y vivienda simples (debido a sus antecedentes militares). El poderoso trasfondo no se utiliza para dar peso, sino que complica enormemente a ML al estar junto con MC. Los ML siempre son escoria al principio, a menudo hay r*pe y dubcon, pero no es tan simple. ML también es un personaje complejo. Hay mucha culpa, sufrimiento también. Y cariñoso y cariñoso. Hasta ahora en las historias que leí, a ML siempre le disgustó MC, pero hombre... Al final caen muuuuy fuerte. ¡Y este proceso siempre está tan bien escrito y es tan convincente! No es el tipo de enamorarse a primera vista y obsesionarse sin ningún motivo en particular (también conocido como escenario de Kdrama).
¡¡El HE siempre se debe a que ML es tan persistente en no soltarse nunca!! Preferiría morir juntos que dejarlo ir. Sufre un dolor tremendo durante este proceso.
- Trama y desarrollo de personajes: Siempre me pregunto al principio.... ¿Cómo puede esta pareja convertirse en amantes y de esos que están tan obsesionados? Ahora se odian tanto... Y cada vez el autor logra que el proceso sea tan hermoso y poderoso.
- Personajes secundarios : los mejores personajes secundarios que he leído están en las historias de este autor. Especialmente en Mi pequeño álamo. Son creíbles y identificables. Igualmente desarrollado como los personajes principales. Hay mucho desarrollo de personajes.
- Sensación general: cruda, emocional, destructiva y súper adictiva : ¡las habilidades y el estilo de escritura son tan buenos! El ritmo es excelente, las escenas son cautivadoras y no aburridas.
A madida que vas avanzando todo está equilibrado entre descripciones y diálogos. El flujo siempre es bueno. En cuanto empiezas a leer no puedes parar.
- ¿Por qué entonces las malas calificaciones?
La configuración de los personajes... No a todos les pueden gustar estos ML explosivos y agresivos que pueden y NUNCA lo dejarán ir. Totalmente obsesivo y destructivo. Del tipo que preferiría morir antes que dejarlo ir. Se puede definir como muy tóxico y poco saludable. Y entiendo totalmente por qué algunos lectores sienten repulsión por esto. Pero también es el entorno en el que los envío tanto y al final siento tanto dolor por ML. Su incesante perseverancia me adormece y sólo desea que vuelvan a estar juntos.
AHORA POR QUE SOLO MI CALIFICACIÓN DE 4 ESTRELLAS:
Si bien la novela tiene una premisa interesante y la dinámica de los personajes me parece muy interesante, hay algo OOC en que ML sea tan infantil si es que fue al ejército. No sé cuánto duraría cuando el ejército es una institución que se enorgullece de su disciplina y de responder ante las autoridades. Además, si el ML realmente no quiere trabajar para la empresa ¿por qué no se va y encuentra su propio camino? ¿Por qué su padre y MC tienen que obligarlo a trabajar? ¿Qué trabajo creen que debería estar haciendo? ¿Y qué pasa si ML no puede gestionar la empresa? ¿Por qué un joven debería tener que seguir las decisiones de sus padres sin tener en cuenta lo que él quiere?

Al final ... Hace tiempo que acepto el hecho de que los autores chinos de danmei pueden obligarme a aceptar cualquier cosa en sus libros. Incluso con un contenido tan desordenado, violento o repulsivo no pude evitar enviar a ambos personajes a lo largo de la trama.
Dejando a un lado todo el contenido mencionado anteriormente, me encantaron muchísimo los protagonistas principales. Sus personajes eran de temperamento fuerte, decididos, claros con su objetivo y fue muy agradable leerlos.
Nunca lo sentí aburrido y definitivamente lo recomendaría a todos los que puedan mirar más allá de todos los temas confusos que trae consigo este libro.

I appreciate the writing skills. I have seen the series but as usual any C-Drama, it was censored. But one thing was common, the chemistry and the character development. Yes it is toxic, but also there was dealing with that toxic and neutralising it, then built a stronger relationship. This story is built that way. Anyway, I will never support a toxic relationship.

I appreciate the writing skills. I have seen the series but as usual any C-Drama, it was censored. But one thing was common, the chemistry and the character development. Updated ranking on the 188 scum gong group books so far:
1. Sissy

I can’t even explain to you the complexity of this ranking because this is purely subjective based on me seeing the tropes I enjoy the most being executed in the book. Like for example I like these books when the gongs are toxic as hell hence why Sissy and AP take first and second place. but I also do love puppy gong. However, how come I put Winner Takes All (the one with puppy gong) on number 3 and Beloved Enemy (the other one with puppy gong) on number 7? Why not put Beloved Enemy on a higher ranking? Well, because I enjoy the feeling of reading PBD more due to the angst. Additional Inheritance was given 3 stars (which is the lowest that I’ve given among all of the books), yet it’s placed on number 5. That’s because I have a soft spot for WXH and LY since it’s the first 188 scum gong novel I read. I would argue that Beloved Enemy is more fun to read than ILWAI, but I put ILWAI on a higher ranking because of the toxic yandere half-brother. See how stupid, complicated, and based on my personal feelings and emotion this is? So don’t look at this ranking and judge these books from it, the ranking is just a thing I make for myself for fun lol.
I’ve completed all of the books that have full english TL and unfortunately must now move on from this series. I enjoyed it, I literally did almost 0 work during the duration of this run and it was amazing.
Personally I think Beloved Enemy was really cute and I love the dynamic between GQP and YY. They remind me a lot of hexie from bab! I will always eat up puppy gong and non-chalant, charistmatic, and mature shou everytime i’m served one. In terms of toxicity, this one is nothing compared to the other one. YY is a rogue-ish character who threatens to beat up other people every 2 seconds and he has no emotional intelligence whatsoever. Him and Peng Fang have like 0.5 braincell put together and i think it’s funny.
Btw this is the kind of dynamic that they have, it’s very cute:

GuQingPei patted him on the shoulders, "Turn around and let me give you a kiss."
Yuan Yang's body stiffened, not moving.
"Come on."
Yuan Yang sluggishly turned around, trying not to aggravate the injury on his shoulder.
GuQingPei heartily gave him a kiss, "Coaxing you is like coaxing a little kid. It's really a workout."
Yuan Yang whispered, "I'll move when I want to move."
"Fine."
"You dare try to kick me out....”
"I'm not kicking you out... Nevermind... can't tell you clearly."
Yuan Yang grabbed onto his waist, "I'm annoyed to death with this kind of attitude of yours, as if I'm pestering you endlessly."
GuQingPei laughed, "Aren't you pestering me endlessly?"
Half of Yuan Yang's body leaned on top of his body and he gently bit his clavicle, "If you keep bullying me, I'm going to beat you up."
I’m glad I decided to pick up this series and I’m excited to read more in the (probably distant) future. I will wait for them all to be fully translated and hopefully get licensed!

As usual, I did not anticipate getting sucked into this one. My new technique to get through my TBR is to choose a random book from the list, read the first few chapters, DNF out of boredom, and then cross it off my list. That did not happen with this one. Ended up binging the whole hting in like five days which God knows I do NOT have the time for right now but I did anyway 😭
Characters were fantastically written and both held distinct voice in their respective POVs. SQC has already proved herself to be a competent writer when I read Wu Chang Jie last year but I ended up enjoying this one a tad more than WCJ since I felt a bit more invested in the plot than I did with WCJ. The business backdrop was not the most riveting but SQC clearly knows a thing or two about business because the text does not skimp on the work details, which is interesting, but most of it went over my head.
Mostly, I'm here for the character development that I think SQC really knocked out of the park, YuanYang's character goes through so much over the course of this story, he's nearly unrecognizable at the end. GuQingPei was also a wonderful protagonist and his dynamic with YuanYang was lots of fun.
I would like to complain a bit about the translation since I felt it was really not the best, but it's good enough to enjoy the story, even you do stumble over a couple lines here and there. I enjoyed this one immensely, enough to be reading another one of her works immediately after this one.

Uhmmm this book is not for me. I really dislike the ML for being so childish and immature at the age of 22. Feels like I'm reading a high school novel instead. Even after the heartache and pain, he was kinda still the same? MC had qualms about ML for being self-centered but he himself was also looking out for his own interests.
The relationship was really abusive (both parties) and ML hated it when MC got hurt but he himself hurt MC too. Kinda ironic.
Also what's with the mention of test-tube babies etc if MC and ML were not described to have any, be it in main story or in the extras. Feels like useless word fillers.
Was supposed to give 2 stars for the book as it was not that pleasant to read but 1 extra star for the excellent angst. I felt the angst so much that it was the redeeming quality of the book and what kept me going.
Lots of angst, moderate amount of smut and a little sprinkle of fluff.

Undeniably a toxic couple and Yuan Yang objectively did not deserve a happy ending, but *shrugs I enjoyed it anyway and rooted for them to end up together.
Dark romance with an unhinged, violent love interest who uses coercion a lot (also with sex) and the smart, sophisticated older protagonist who has the fortune/misfortune of getting involved with Yuan Yang.
This is a pretty trashy romance novel, but it's fun and the couple had chemistry and an interesting dynamic. It's dumb fun, but the characters are really engaging once you get into the story.
Contains non-consensual sex, drugging and other R-rated stuff, so avoid unless you like gay AND dark romance. If you want something wholesome, look elsewhere.

I gave it 4 stars simply because of how addictive it was. I can not accept nor comprehend the twisted relationship that somehow developed, changed and... succeeded? I don’t feel happy at all after finishing reading. I don’t know how to feel. It’s just all messed up. And there were plenty of opportunities for the author to expand on side stories and characters, but it simply didn’t happen. I’m tired.
