Going into this novel, I was aware that it was the first book in a trilogy, but I wasn't sure if it would have enough appeal for me to want to continue reading the next two books. Boy, did it ever!

What made this story so appealing?
1. For a debut novel, Lee's incredible writing craft had me from the first sentence! With immediate action at the beginning, a spine-tingling build in the middle, leading to action that smacks you upside-the-head at the end, this book is the definition of a page-turner!
2. Even though this book falls into the horror/paranormal genre, it's not a blatant, in-your-face grotesque-read. It was macabre in a perfectly subtle way. Let's just say that I could read it before bedtime and not have any nightmares.
3. The detailed poetic writing had me feeling like I was in the story! This would make a fantastic movie!

Except for some teeny-tiny editing issues, this book blew me away! If you enjoy reading horror/paranormal involving ghosts, demons and vampires, this book has it all!

ADDITIONAL REVIEW:
I've just listened to the new audiobook, narrated by Hannibal Hills. This soon became the audiobook I hadn't realised I NEEDED to hear. I read the book when it was released, loving it from the first chapter, but listening to layers of the story being superbly narrated was being welcomed back into the dark velvety folds of Beverley Lee's writing. Hearing the characters being lifted from the pages with their arm around my shoulder, saying, 'come on in, take a seat and live this story with us.'...the joys of brilliant narration.

Original review:
Beverley Lee's craftsmanship is outstanding; as a debut novel, it stands an equal amongst those crafted by 'old masters'.

I only ever intended to tiptoe into a couple of chapters to get a taste, but I literally lost hours as rain lashed at my windows, so absorbed from the very first paragraph. I was snowed-in, cut-off, paralysed with fear, cradling little Gabriel, right there with Beth . . . terrified!

I refuse to give too much away. The Making of Gabriel Davenport drags you into a world a mix with the paranormal, an unlikely family bond, a great historical location and a Reverend whose faith is teetering on the edge of his own hell . . . it holds you there with so much depth of plot twists and plausible characters, that you become very attached to; it's hard to escape. It is a must-read for everyone who loves fantasy, ghosts, and demons, and that's just a gentle nudge to the edge of what this book brings to the reader, kicking and screaming.

Beverley Lee, I salute you; a masterpiece. I bought the Kindle version but shall purchase it in paperback so it can sit on my bookshelf; no doubt to be read every Halloween.

The Making of Gabriel Davenport - Beverley Lee.
🍁
I first saw this around on Rods feed and then stalked Bevs instafeed which can I say is amazing 😉 so I went ahead and stuck this on the wish list and TBR pile on my kindle! .. I wish I just read this sooner! But was great to see in October reading it!
🍁
The story follows Gabe and his Mother and Father, living out in the country and enjoying new parenthood, Stu (Gabe’s Father) acquired a antique box from the local store which to Beth (Gabe’s Mother) instinct tells her is bad news!
The tension in these first chapters is un-nerving, I was reading like I was high on speed just wanting to know what’s happening and what is lurking on the next pages!
🍁
A tragic accident follows and we fast forward in Gabe’s life, where we meet Carver, Ollie and Olivia! Damn I loved Olivia so much, she is a full on battle axe of a woman and I just saw my Daughter in her! Don’t you love it when you can relate a person from a fictional world into someone you know?
I loved getting to know these characters and I won’t say what happens next but I can assure you guys it gets good!
Throughout the story we meet some more gothic creatures, I did think with these certain creatures the story would take a whole different pose but I am so glad it didn’t!
🍁
The tension doesn’t let you go until the very last sentence which has you screaming for more.. I seriously can’t wait to get to number 2 and then to number 3! 💀
So all in all - haven’t read it? Go and put this on that wish list.. it doesn’t disappoint!

I can't believe this is a debut novel! Beverley Lee writes like she has done so her whole life. I was immediately drawn in by Bev's expert, detailed narrative. The thing that blew me away was how Bev could transition that narrative into different characters-everyone from a nursing, first time mother, to a 30ish year old priest, to a teenaged boy to ancient evils-everyone had a unique voice and I knew exactly who was speaking by the inner mind chat and dialogue.
Other, less experienced authors try to do that and fail miserably. This was a true success. I also liked how Bev kept the chapters short. This story required a quick pace and it unraveled at the perfect speed-too quickly and the reader could be left confused or with a lot of unanswered questions-too slow and the reader would lose the urgency. Lee found the sweet spot, moving the story along just right.
But enough technical accolades- this story is fantastic! The mood is dark and brooding, the evil scary and threatening, the characters are real with real motivations and a sincerity that makes you care very much about what happens to them. The ending---WHOA! Let's just hope there is a sequel on the way and FAST! This is my new favorite thriller/horror. I loved it (as you can tell)

“She dreamed in grey; the colour of misery.”

Beverly Lee has to be one of the most under-rated authors I’ve come across this year. Her debut novel oozes talent! This book grabbed hold of me from the very first sentence and didn’t let go, even after I turned the last page. Beverly created a deliciously creepy atmosphere, with amazing pathetic fallacy comparable to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It takes a lot to creep me out but the start of this book was genuinely chilling! The novel was perfectly paced and incredibly vivid, with each scene playing out clearly in my mind; when are we going to get a movie, Bev?!

The book also featured some beautiful descriptive passages, demonstrating Beverly’s clear love of the written word. One of my favourites was: “It was full dark but the sky was alive with electric light, nature’s fireworks against a backdrop of brilliant indigo, bruised and beaten.” Seriously, wow.

The characters in this book were so likeable and I felt every emotion right along with Gabe and his peers. I loved the manor house setting, at times feeling a Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children vibe. This is a book that managed to be consistent with certain expectations regarding the supernatural, yet still refreshingly original. It was obvious that Beverly put a lot of thought into this, her debut work.

My final word is about those chapter endings: Bev is an absolute master! Every chapter ended in such a way that made it nearly impossible to stop reading; I just had to know what happened next. And I can only hope there will be a sequel!!

'it had dwelt in the shop window of the antique shop, forgotten and still. But waiting. Waiting for that one person who would catch sight of it, that one person who would admire the seasoned wood and the pure, ageless craftsmanship. It didn't choose that person; they made that choice on their own.'

Wow Bev, what a debut you have! The Making of Gabriel Davenport was absolutely stunning!

The story starts with Beth and Stu, a married couple who have moved into a new home, in a small village in England - for their young son Gabriel to grow up in. When it becomes apparent to Beth that something eerie is present in the house; events spiral out of control.

What a ride this book is, it's seriously fast paced, with good interesting characters and an edge of your seat plot. I particularly liked the character Gabriel, the main protagonist, despite his age he shows quite a bit of intelligence. Noah the priest was also brilliant, his inner struggle with his faith was something I really found engaging. My favourite character though was definitely Clove - I won't say too much about him because of spoilers, but let's just say I like my dark characters, and Clove was deliciously done. In fact all the dark parts of the book were the best bits - Bev I can see you had fun here!

I also loved the atmospheric writing. The descriptions of the countryside, The Manor where most of the book is set, and the descriptions of events were all written with such detail and elegance that you could really get lost in it all and feel like you were there! I love when a book does that, don't you?

My only complaint is the book was too short, there were certain chapters where I wanted more. Basically I wanted more Clove! And after that ending I need to get my hands on the sequel!

I recommend this to fans of horror and atmospheric books, you'll seriously enjoy this one.

Stunned by this one. Lee knows that terror begins with an attachment to the characters, and she develops the world of Gabriel around the reader, enveloping you, leaving you not only a witness, but with a genuine feeling of knowing the characters as friend or foe, comfort or threat. The reader sinks into this world--that's the best way I can put it--and you're reluctant to leave it, even when anxiety and fear makes you desperate to look away. That magnetism through prose is what makes Beverley Lee one of my favorite authors.

The story follows Gabriel from infancy, and the mundane leads into the fantastic world of the vampire. The transition is woven with such skill that the reader believes whatever Lee has to say. If she writes it, you'll buy it (and I mean that both ways).

Looking forward to part two in the series.

This book is a masterpiece!
I highly recommend reading this book!
The fine craftsmanship of the book is simply brilliant.
The book truly carried me away and I was really sad when I had to stop reading and go to work.
The language is really beautiful and intelligent, the vocabulary is diverse; the blooming flowers of it all being small, pretty words that are not often used.
The characters have great personalities that connected with me. I had sympathy with all of them and truly wanted to know what happened to every one of them. They are all there for their own sakes, and they all see the world differently, yet they are all important to the story. I loved the part where Beverley started to split them up – this produced lots of cliff-hangers and made me read (if possible) even faster – in order to find out what happened to them.
The beginning is hair-rising and heart-stopping. Beverley manages to anchor the characters, the setting, the tone and the actions to come already in the first chapter. She also manages to deliver what the beginning, the “mini excerpt of what to come”, prepares the reader for: A story with horror, with paranormal activities, with a poetic language and sympathetic characters, and with movement, heart, action and spine-tingling conflicts.
The story has an extremely strong structure. Beverley knows the craft of a great story – she has obviously been learning about structure. I think the reason why this story works so well is that the structure is simply perfect. Nothing in this book is random or superfluous – which is why it is such an easy and pleasant read.
The ending wraps up the story perfectly - and surprising!
The tone and the questions in chapter one, and even from the title, are rounded up in a good way. The story is so solid, that when I read it, I felt like I read a classic.
To me it seems obvious that this book will become a best-seller.
Beverly deserves living of this trade – and I’m pretty sure she will!

Ok, I knew I was going to like this book because of all the hype I constantly heard about it, but I honestly didn't think I was gonna like it so much!! The book grasped me from the beginning and I kept flipping page after page not wanting to stop because I wanted to know what was gonna happen next!

The thriller portion of this book with it's supernatural beings was what drew me to the book at first (besides Bev herself, because she's fantastic). And I can say, it definitely didn't disappoint! Had me on the edge of my seat waiting for more suspense. The last half of the book is definitely where the pace picked up the most with all the tension of the book oozing from the pages with Bev's brilliant wordage and story weaving. She's an enchantress luring us in with her words...WATCH OUT! haha no in all seriousness, I can't wait to start the second book...because it was just that good that I need more of Gabriel!!!!

Reviewed By Divine Zape for Readers’ Favorite

The Making of Gabriel Davenport by Beverley Lee is a masterful blend of horror and fantasy, a well-crafted story that will make readers shiver as they follow this exciting adventure into the dark places of the story. Something happened in Meadowfield Bridge that tragically affected the lives of Gabriel Davenport’s parents and, consequently, his own life, something that has silently haunted him for years. Many years later, and now an adult, Gabriel sets out to confront his past, but little does he know that what he’ll face could cause his ultimate demise. Can’t he just choose to live quietly and normally rather than face a darkness as irresistible as it is unforgiving?

Beverley Lee is a new voice in the world of fantasy and horror, one that will be adored by fans of this genre. As an indie and a first-time author, her writing is surprisingly excellent. The plot is wonderful and there is a lot of darkness in the book to make readers look over their shoulders as they turn pages. You are gripped from the very opening and by powerful lines of the story, laced with imagery and symbolism: “She dreamed in grey, the color of misery. The pall bearers lowered her coffin into the ground. She banged on the lid, bloody fingers clawing at the wood. But she wasn’t trying to get out. She was trying to get in.” Things only get better and better as one reads on, and the tension builds with the sense of mystery and impending danger brushing endlessly on the edges of one’s heart.

The characters are very exciting and real; it takes a lot of skill to make an impossible story believable, even lovable. It takes greater skill to make anyone fall in love with darkness and Lee has got all of these. Excellent writing, beautiful plot, great characters, The Making of Gabriel Davenport is one of those stories with great potential for a horror movie, a breathless, breezy read.

The Making of Gabriel Davenport was not what I expected - in all the right ways!

The opening line alone was beautiful, and drew me in right away. It also got dark very quickly, and set the tone for the rest of the book. I wasn't even five (short) chapters into the story before I was fearing for Beth's life, and I still feel for everything that's gone so terribly wrong for her. While she wasn't one of the most active characters throughout the book she's one of my favourites, which I think says a lot.

I *love* The Manor. It's the perfect sanctuary (demons notwithstanding) and GAWD, the things I'd do to search that vault and that library! They both sound like someone's perfect happy place! It might be time to start a list of fictional places I'd love to visit, and put this one at the top... Not that Carver would let me.

The one thing I really didn't expect was the supernatural twist. I knew there'd be a demon and something evil from the blurb, but I didn't expect someone who could see the dead, or fudging vampires. Not the fake, sparkly kind. The dark, dangerous kind. I thought I knew who my favourites were until Clove walked in.

The characters are real and convincing, and I felt protective of Beth early on. Olivia is my favourite character. She's a girl with a fascinating ability, who's unapologetic, and who gets things done!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought it, but it wasn't this and I can't wait for the sequel. The Making of Gabriel Davenport ended in such a brilliant way, and I can't recommend it enough.

Beverley Lee comes across as a lovely person, happy, thankful, polite, and courteous, whenever I see her on any of the social media threads. She’s one of those people that is a constant sideline cheerer, a supporter of writers she knows and roots for – there isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t see her retweet several people’s tweets, putting herself out for the good of the community. Honestly, it’s like having a proud sister on your team, the person that is going to stick by you through thick or thin and do so vocally. She is a legend.

And then there’s the other side to Beverley.

There was (it’s been a while now since I heard anything about him) a standing joke about George R.R. Martin, where he is writing his latest book and has a writer's block, and then a glint comes into his eye, and he attacks the page, writing “And then they all DIED!” as he repeatedly stabs the notebook with a pen.

And that is pretty much how Beverley writes. You have this wonderful, atmospheric, slow build in her books. This detail-rich prose, lulling you to floating happiness, bathed in her character detail, her magnificently painted and exquisitely realized situations. The pressure building page by page, the lid of the melting pot shaking and rocking in barely contained pressure. And this almost Hitchcockian approach to horror, subtle, inferred horror, fade to black type of tension building.

And then she kills characters. DIE! DIE!

As sure as night follows day, Beverley is going to destroy your life if you are in one of her books. Not only are you going to die, but you are going to die inventively.

So let’s look at TMOGD, my third Lee novel (though I have read more of her shorts).

I knew, before going in, that it was a vampire novel. How? Because Beverley markets the series as a vampire series. So, it came as something of a surprise that that element of the book was actually rather downplayed. I thought Gabriel was going to be bitten, become a vampire, and learn how to do vampire stuff. Bite, fly maybe. A bit of vampire sex is normal, right? I mean, that’s pretty much what vampire novels do, or?

Wrong. Not at all. TMOGD has vampires in it, but honestly, they don’t actually do that much with regards threat. I think it is fairer to say that TMOGD is all about tension. This is the tension monster of all tension monsters. A Tenshmon.

Beverley has constructed each chapter to be short. She’s controlling your breathing and pacing the novel on that basis, and adds a tension hook to almost every chapter end. By the end of the novel, you are as exhausted by the tension as much as all of the characters in the book. It’s an effective tool, and played well, honestly, you want to rush through the book to get back to breathing normally.

The plot is well thought out, though I had problems at the end with some of the details being obscured – I felt the bite from Clove needed to be seen. It is hinted at, but again, Beverley made it fade to black to obscure the details.

I also have to say that I was incredibly frustrated with the whole gang in the manor. Like, almost throw the book across the room frustrated (to clarify, a good frustrated – I couldn’t believe they could be so dumb). The whole miserable bunch of them. It was pretty much like watching a horror movie where you scream at the screen that the characters are being idiots! They tell each other (SEVERAL TIMES) that they have to stick together. That the demon wants to separate them. That as a group they will last longer. After which, every single character then tries to leave the group, individually, and always with the go-ahead from the other members of the gang. Sometimes for reasons that defy belief – one of the characters decides he needs to pull on the ol’ flagpole and says he’s just grabbing his charging cable from upstairs, where the demon was last heard. Sure. Go ahead. As a person that lives in Austria, I am uniquely qualified to be able to comment on situations where the characters are effectively saying “I’ll be back.”. It always ends in tears.

Or bad accents at the very least.

One character decides to go fetch pizzas from the kitchen. The priest even makes a point of telling the group he wants to go alone upstairs, and nobody should try to follow him. I might have even said “You are so going to die” out loud at work as I read that one.

So – As I said, this book is frustrating, but that shows that you care, and that’s down to the writing. Beverley has filled the book with people that are really well fleshed out, and each has a distinct voice. The POV’s are solid, the writing is impeccable, the pace is breakneck.

The making of Gabriel Davenport is a train wreck waiting to happen. You know that it is going to pick up speed, get faster and faster and that at the end of the line, just at the place where the bridge has been destroyed, there isn’t going to be a Spiderman to save you. There’s going to be a George R.R. Martin standing in the train’s path, looking forlornly up at the speeding bullet death train aimed straight at him, and his one-liner before he dies is going to be “So that’s how you do it”.

DNF.

I’m 100 pages in and it just isn’t working for me at the moment. The pacing is very slow and sometimes if I don’t have the proper amount of time to set aside, I struggle to get invested in the characters and the story. And this is exactly what’s happening.

I’ll pick it back up when I have more time to devote because this is one book I really want to read and enjoy.

I didn't as much read this book as I devoured it. I honestly devoured this thing, and was hungry for more. I could hardly put it down, to the detriment of other books I was also reading at the time, and when I did put it down, it haunted my mind, I kept thinking of it, wanting to get back to it. Three days was all it took me to read it, and when I was done I was... broken, because I didn't have the sequel!! The mood of this entire book is right up my alley, reminding me of the sort of films I used to watch growing up and getting acquainted with horror and falling in love with it. There's a tendril of Anne Rice flowing through the narrative, but also a vibe that is very much early days Stephen King. As if this novel happened to be the love child of The Tale of the Body Thief and Salem's Lot? I was hooked from the start, the eerie, uncomfortable feel the author managed to set right from chapter one, where you have this thing going up your spine telling you oh boy oh boy, somink bad's about to happen. It takes a while to build up the necessary tension, and Beverley does this MASTERFULLY well. By the time soming bad does happen, I was jumping on the couch in anticipation. I was ready for it, but not really ready, know what I mean? It clawed at me. That first half of the novel is really a masterpiece in horror. But the second half is where the true art of the writer comes to shine. The characters are so vivid, and so real, and so pungent and heartfelt! I always wonder how an author has to be really very good to build up a character so well, in so few pages. From the moment you meet certain characters, the person they are shines back at you and you just know. And you can't help but love them. Then there's the odd ones where you're left in the dark, and you wonder about them, and you're intrigued by them, wanting to know more. I realise Moth is a steady favourite, but for me it was Clove. Can't wait to get to the second book so I dig into that bloke. Hmm Hmm.
Can you tell I really loved this book? I did. Do I recommend it? YOU FREAKIN' BET I DO!

She sighed, a soft exhalation of breath, which misted the window for a moment. Then, it was gone. Sometimes, she wished that she could disappear as easily.

This was a brilliant debut! As a constant reader & a somewhat writer, I truly appreciate the details Beverley Lee has put into this story. I love when an author can transport the reader into the setting with such ease. I was enthralled with the atmosphere of this entire story from beginning to end! I could envision the landscapes, the buildings, especially The Manor! I LOVED the library (what else is new?) & picture immersing myself within a book for hours upon hours, vampires & the like roaming the halls. No demons, please!

Lee's ability to create multidimensional characters is superb! There is such a wonderful cast of characters that I truly loved -- Gabriel, Moth, Ollie, Beth, Noah & Clove! Dear Clove. My absolute favourite! I so look forward to *hopefully* finding out more about his backstory & how he came to find Gabriel.

Also? I am shipping Gabe & Moth like FedEx! Please make this canon, dear Beverley Lee! ::Fingers firmly crossed::

This was an utterly thrilling read, especially the last 100 pages! I did not want to put it down. I enjoyed the short chapters, as I felt they really added to the fast-paced storytelling. The only problem is, the book was too short! I wanted MORE!

Atmospheric & haunting, thrilling & intriguing. I had no idea what this was going to be about & I was beyond pleasantly surprised as it was all unveiled! This is my kind of book. I am awaiting the sequel with bated breath! Highly recommended!

Now I'm admittedly a slow reader at times and often other things in my life can take priority, but once I started this book I just could not put it down. The length of the chapters really helps the story flow so well and kept enticing me to carry on reading. The usual "just one more chapter" before sleep quickly escalated in numerous chapters.

The opening scenes of the book really creeped me out and I really regretted reading this before going to sleep one night (it was not a good night's sleep)! The middle of the book then seemed to become less tense, but there was an overriding sense of unease, like something even scarier was coming...

And the escalation towards the end of the book was truly captivating. I was turning each page quickly just dying to find out what was going to happen!

As for the characters - what a group of well-developed and likeable characters. Very easy to distinguish between who was who from the beginning (which I can sometimes struggle with).

I cannot rate this debut novel highly enough - holding out for a sequel because I simply must know what happens next!! If you love demons and vampires, then this is the right book for you.

Just finished this amazing book. Holy flying cats it was great! There is an underlying feeling of tingly fear throughout this entire book and I love it! Taken from multiple points of view, it's cohesive and understandable, you loose nothing of the story. Though the main character is mid teens, I'd still classify this novel as Adult Fiction. The story has a Stephen King type feel without seeming to copy him at all; a bit of an homage perhaps? I thought the story was very unique, highly original, and varied with a cast of characters that were easy to connect with. Yes, I like that there is a character with my name. And a scary...thing. And a weird school/institute. And Gabriel; beautiful smart Gabe. Oh and Olivia! Can I love her more? No, probably not. Vampires! #CloveIsABabe And Noah. Ollie...
Oh and all the feels that are happening! If you're a fan of suspense, a pinch of horror, and a mystery that leaves you wanting more, then THIS is the book for you. A perfect five star read.
Ms. Lee, in all seriousness: SEQUEL.
That is all.

Beverley has an ethereal writing quality that floats into your head and blocks out everything else. I was captivated by the characters and want to know more about their supernatural lives. Tension pulsates throughout the book which actually caused me to break out in nervous laughter at one point, not because it was funny, but so unexpected. The evil entities that lurk in this book are so menacing that I was mentally screaming at the characters to run. I am very happy that I have book two in the trilogy because I need to know more.
I left the review rather vague because I believe this is something that you need to experience for yourself.

A brilliant page turning dark fantasy by Beverley Lee. I learned quickly not to read it in the dark! The pace was perfect, the unveiling of characters excellent and the ending! Omg, it has left my thoroughly impatient for book 2 Exemplary debut novel for lovers of fantasy
