What I Liked:

It's been a while since I really enjoyed a book - for some reason, this year has been a difficult reading year for me. Nothing appears to be holding my attention. I'll start a book and then set aside and it'll probably stay abandoned. I saw this book on sale a few weeks ago, for $0.99, and I was curious because of the cover (it's gorgeous!). But when I saw that the story features some of my favorite tropes? It was a no-brainer. The Maiden's Defender is the first book I've read in weeks and it was so wonderful, the perfect book to get me out of my reading slump.

This is the second book in the series, and it features Teàrlach and Maddie. Teàrlach has been hired by Laird Moreville to train soldiers. Teàrlach is a skilled warrior and a fourth son of the MacGregor clan's laird, and he wants to make a name for himself. He doesn't plan for Lady Maddie, who is Laird Moreville's ward under the King. He doesn't expect to fall for this sweet maiden, who is shy and a little naive but so clever and spirited. He doesn't expect to have to escort her to her wedding to Laird Moreville's son. Maddie doesn't want to marry John de Moreville - she'd rather stay in her rundown home and live a simple life. She never expected to fall for Teàrlach MacGregor. But when the time comes to marry John de Moreville under the King's command, Maddie knows she must choose: duty, or love?

I've not read the first book in this series, nor have I read anything else by this author. So I didn't know what to expect in terms of writing style, prose, world-building, etc. The author penned this story beautifully! The story's structure is a great combination of delightful meandering (in the beginning) and rising tension (in the second half). Her writing is well-crafted without nothing to detract the reader's attention. It's clear that the author has good working knowledge of the Highlands and Scotland in general, at least enough for this twelfth century novel.

I love several tropes of this book, which ended up being what prompted me to buy the book (besides the fact that it was $0.99 at the time - on sale). I LOVE the burly warrior/gentle maiden trope. I know it is somewhat of an "old"/outdated trope, and perhaps not always viewed as the most feminist of tropes. But I love it. It IS feminist; not all girls are rough-and-tumble fierce warriors. I love the girls of quiet strength, whose silent resilience is her strength. And I love the strong, surly warriors who are also sensitive and honorable. This trope is quite possibly my favorite in romance novels. The book also featured a fairly good slow-burn romance - it was so sweet!

Maddie is a wonderful, admirable heroine. She is definitely one of quiet strength and silent resilience. Her gentle nature is a strength, as is her resilience. She was mistreated by her father for years, and indirectly mistreated by Laird Moreville for years, yet she found ways to survive and her spirit remained unbroken. She is one of the strongest heroines I've come across. She isn't a sword-wielding, world-saving, trouser-donning heroine; yet she is equally strong, in her own way.

Teàrlach is such a sweetheart. He is a big, burly, quiet, broody Highlander, with years of experience as a warrior and hired sword. He can move like a shadow despite his tall frame, and he is incredibly skilled with most weapons. But he also has a soft, honorable heart. He takes care of Maddie when her leg is sprained. He ensures that she receives proper resources and visits her every week. Honestly Teàrlach wasn't even trying to court her, but he was the perfect suitor in every way. Teàrlach is the embodiment of an excellent alpha male: he's masculine and viral and whatnot, but also sensitive, honorable, loyal, caring. He has so many good traits but he isn't a cardboard cutout.

The romance is so sweet, and steamy too. I loved watching Teàrlach and Maddie fall in love. It was so obvious and so adorable to watch. The author spent a lot of page time ensuring that readers could witness the blossoming relationship. There is no insta-love here. I loved every romantic second of their "courtship" (it wasn't technically courtship but you know what I mean!). I loved the care that Teàrlach took to keeping Maddie's good name and reputation intact. But I also loved when Maddie made some decisions for herself and threw caution to the wind! You go, girl.

There were a few steamy scenes in this book, not very many, in fact I think there was only one "long" one, but the author did a great job of creating good chemistry and building tension. The romance was sweet, but sexy too!

The climax of the story takes a heartbreaking turn, and then a joyous one, and then heartbreaking, and then wonderful. It's a roller coaster of an ending! But worth it in every way. I actually liked how the author took a somewhat unconventional way to get to the expected HEA. Don't get me wrong, Teàrlach and Maddie get a fantastic HEA and I love it so much. But there was a little bit of heartbreak before they arrived at this HEA. Worth it!

As you can see, I really enjoyed this book. I wouldn't have come across it had Entangled not put it on sale, so thank you for that, Entangled!

What I Did Not Like:

Nothing to knock off stars, but the author could have thrown in one or two more ~steamy~ scenes! Maybe more tension-building scenes, and at least one more long one. That would be my only complaint. Teàrlach and Maddie had such great chemistry, it was almost a shame not to see more clashes between them!

Would I Recommend It:

If you like historical romance novels, I really recommend this one. It's set in the medieval Highlands (1191, if I remember correctly), and it has the sweetest romance. Not to mention the alpha warrior/sweet maiden trope. And an excellent HEA. And a slow-burn romance. Love it!

Rating:

5 stars. I am a huge fan of this book! The alpha male/sweet maiden trope was the main draw for me, and of course the gorgeous cover. However, I will be looking out for future books by this author. She has me intrigued!

The Maiden's Defender by E. Elizabeth Watson is the story of Teàrlach MacGregor and Lady Madeline Crawford. Teàrlach once was Madeline's father guardsman so he has met Madeline before and had feelings for her. But when her father was sent to prison for some evil doings the King places Madeline in the care of lair Henry de Moreville. This lair place her in a small place on his property with two elderly people to look after her. But even those elderly people are doing her wrong and Madeline doesn't complain due to her abusive up bringing by her father. When Teàrlach meets up with Madeline again he still wants to help and protect her. But Madeline being noble puts her out of Teàrlach reach...but it doesn't stop their growing love.
I so loved this story! I couldn't put it down!

The Maiden’s Defender by E. Elizabeth Watson
Ladies of Scotland #2

Madeline Crawford is a mouse…a mouse that has learned to creep around without incurring the wrath of her father. She is nothing like her stronger sister who appeared in book one of this series. Well, Madeline finds herself as the ward of the king with Lord DeMoreville the man in charge of taking care of her and he is a no good rotten scoundrel…to say the least. On her eighteenth birthday she is out and about enjoying the countryside when she takes a tumble and Teàrlach MacGregor comes to her rescue. The two knew one another in the past when he was working for her father but a new phase in their lives begins when they meet again. With Teàrlach on his way to DeMoreville’s stronghold and having seen the needs of Madeline he is appalled to find out what his new boss is actually up to.

This story has a man who is a fourth son with nothing he feels he has to offer, a woman that is browbeaten but with a dowry, an evil man pulling strings, romance, separation, loss and an eventual HEA for the two. Madeline grows as the story progresses moving from mouse to more and Teàrlach…well…he finally wises up but it takes a bit longer than it should have, in my opinion.

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I loved "The Maiden's Defender" by E. Elizabeth Watson. Medieval romances are my absolute favorite and I keep hoping they make a comeback. Lady Madeline's evil father has been displaced and she has been taken pseudo hostage by the Scottish King. She has a ward, but lives alone with just two feeble servants in a deserted keep. Madeline is sweet, kind, and very, very naive, she can't read or write and was cowed by her father for most of her life.
Tearlach is Madeline's father's former commander and was always attracted to Madeline, but knew he was beneath her. He stubbles upon her as he is traveling to seek a new position. She fell and hurt herself and he rescues her. Tearlach instantly takes Madeline on as his responsibility. He gifts her with additional supplies, visits with her and ultimately they fall in love.
But it will not be easy for the two. Madeline is betrothed to a man who isn't kind and she is scared to defy the king. Tearlach would do anything for Madeline, but he won't keep her from marrying a man of her station.
Tearlach and Madeline have chemistry that leaps off the pages. Loved them as a couple and liked each one as an individual character. I found myself rooting for them to find a way to their happily ever after.
There are a couple of really steamy scenes between the two. I will definitely read more by this author. Please keep the medieval romances coming!

Tearlach McGregor is the right man to train soldiers how to be ruthless, especially since he can take on a number of men and come out on top in a fight. But the moment he rescues Lady Madeline Crawford, Tearlach begins to wish his life could be different and he could give her the life she deserves including love, family and happiness. Yet, when Madeline is informed she's betrothed to another, there's no way Tearlach can stay only to lose the woman he loves. However, Madeline is determined not to give up on them so easily, and as her wedding nears, will she be able to find a way out or will she and Tearlach lose their chance at happy ever after?

I've read quite a few Historical Romance this year, but this story is one of the best so far because both of the main characters were marvellous and had some tough obstacles to overcome; the dialogue was well-written and a wonderful combination of intense moments due to the deviousness of some of the secondary characters that will do anything to make Tearlach and Madeline realize it's not possible for the pair to be together and pleasing banter that had me liking every interaction between this couple, as they grow closer together and make the most of their time together. The way this story started had me worried for the heroine, because she's all alone and finds herself in trouble. Will anyone find her before it's too late? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time that had me fascinated by this couple's growing relationship, as they're familiar with each other because he used to work for her villainous father, and Tearlach has always felt something for her. Will he be able to win Madeline heart?

Both the main characters had very interesting back stories with Tearlach being the fourth son of his family and not having to lead the clan, so it's made him take a different path in life. He's tough and confident when it comes to training men to be ruthless soldiers. He's also protective of the heroine and I liked that he would do anything for her, which is proven by what he does to ensure the heroine isn't being taken advantage of and that someone that's trying to use her for their personal gain doesn't get the chance. While the heroine, she's kind, caring, resilient and I liked that she had the courage to stand up to those that are wanting her to marry. I also liked how accepting she is of Tearlach's help, so she can learn things she was never taught growing up.

Overall, Ms. Watson has delivered a wonderful read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was a delight to read and just kept getting stronger, as the heroine did her best to tempt the hero. As for the ending, it had me crying happy tears as the heroine goes to great lengths to find her way back to the hero and make him realize that they're meant for each other. However, I loved how the secondary characters helped the pair find their way back to each other too, because no one is more suited for Tearlach than Madeline. I would recommend The Maiden's Defender by E. Elizabeth Watson, if you enjoy Historical Romance, the friends to lovers trope, the opposites attract trope, or books by authors Heather McCollum, Kathryn LeVeque, Lori Ann Bailey and Amy Jarecki.

I love Tearlach. that is the sweetest guy under that tough exterior. How he is with Madeline just has you melt.

Here Madeline is free of the shackles of her father but no hindered by the Lord who the king is having take care of her. He is a horrible cheat. And greedy to boot. But Madeline is grateful just for her freedom and doesn’t say anything. Seeing Tearlach again has her wary but as she gets to know him and she sees how kind and caring he is she falls in love. Tearlach shows Madeline respect and is honest with her. He doesn’t treat her as if she is beneath him but encourages her and sees her strength and beauty. He helps her learn and grow. She gains confidence and belief in herself because of Tearlach and how he is with her. They fall in love and are torn apart as well.

We get heartbreak and second chances. We see how kind, loving and forgiving Madeline is. How love can heal someone and have them gain their senses and fight as well. But also it has them let go so the other can be safe. Only sometimes when we let go we must come back because it is the right thing as well.

A really wonderful sweet romance that has the man believe in the girl and the girl believe in love in the end. One where they help each other heal and find strength in love and one another. And we see family show loyalty and love but also help one another no matter what.

I fell for Teàrlach in the previous book in the series & was so glad he had his story. The pair have been attracted to each other for a long time & each brings out the best in each other. I found this to be a lovely tender story of Teàrlach thinking he’s not good enough & Madeline believing she’s to do as she’s told without complaint. I enjoyed the story & found the characters to be well developed & likeable, the plot was well paced & all the time I was routing for the pair to have their HEA

the sequel to an earl for an archeress, the maiden's defender picks up on teàrlach macgregor's feeling for lady madeline crawford and gives them a chance to grow and blossom into something deep and meaningful and able to withstand any trial.

when teàrlach discovers maddie at the bottom of a ravine he is incensed to realize that she is being neglected by her guardian. having previously witnessed her father's abuse and neglect of her and her sister, teàrlach is unwilling to stand by and see her suffer any longer. and so he takes it upon himself to care for her, even as he realizes that this friendship can't go any further than that.

but you can't control who you love. and teàrlach was already half in love with maddie before he ever saw her again. and spending time with her now only strengthens the depth of his feelings for her. he would lay down his life for her in a heartbeat, give up anything to save her from injury. the only thing he cannot force himself to do is see her marry someone else.

and she is betrothed to her guardian's son. it is a marriage that has been blessed by the king and as loyal subjects neither maddie or teàrlach have the power to break the agreement. teàrlach is the fourth son of a highland clansman and maddie the youngest daughter of the imprisoned sheriff of ayr.

this moment marks a long and arduous separation for these two lovers, and by the time it ends and they are reunited, they are completely changed. but one thing holds true. the love they feel for each other is beyond anything—time, distance, old hurts—all of that can be overcome.

Oh I absolutely loved this book. It was the kind of sweet that makes your toothache. Right from the first page I was drawn in and hooked. What was even better was how Madeline grew. She went from being this timid, quiet girl who never spoke up, to this powerful woman who went after what she wanted. Tearlach was the perfect gentleman. He wanted the wee lass right from the start when he was working for her father. I loved watching him struggle with his wants and needs when it came to Madeline. There was such a strong back story with this novel i was holding my breath waiting for that penny to drop. You could read the suspense building in certain scenes. I wanted to scream at TEARLACH to open his eyes and notice what was going on. This author was new to me but now a favourite. I can’t wait to read more.

What does highlander with nothing to his name but his skills to do when the lady he loves is betrothed to another?

I enjoyed this book with its simplicity. The plot is simple and straighforward but the way it is weaved with the character-driven story is seamless. The author really knows where to put the emotional scenes that pulls the reader's heartstring. Its a complete departure from the previous book where I found the characters boring despite their complexity.

Plot: 4/5
Characterisation: 4/5
Prose: 3.5/5
How much I enjoyed it: 4/5

This is a lovely story, well written and I was intrigued from the beginning, Madeline and Tearlach may have the same problems as many highland stories, but E Elizabeth Watson, has done a good job in making this her own. Getting back to them, their chemistry is wonderful, I couldn't wait to see if they get their HEA and thwart the awful warden.

Since her father's imprisonment Madeline Crawford has been under the guardianship of the King until he finds her a suitable husband. He sends money to High Sheriff Moreville to look after her. The Sheriff has his own agenda and is slowly putting things in place as he wants them.
Tearlach MacGregor once worked for Madeline's father. Now he is on his way to work for her temporary guardian. What he discovers when he finds her, angers him on her behalf. He will do his best to improve her lot until her marriage.
Our heroine has hidden her true personality for years through fear. It's time to face up to the world.
Our humble hero is a fearsome warrior who suffers with an excess of honour. It could cost him everything.
A very enjoyable and emotional read.

Tearlach has cared for Madeline since he was her father’s chief guardsman. Even though he soon learns that her father is a cruel, unworthy lord, he stays for Maddie’s sake, always keeping an eye out for her. But being the 4th son of a Scottish lord, Tearlach doesn’t think much of his prospects to win her hand.

When Maddie’s father is convicted for seditious plotting and imprisoned she becomes the ward of the King who puts her under the guardianship of the laird Henry de Moreville, who houses her in a small, tower near his castle with only an elderly couple to help her. Unscrupulously stealing from her monthly allowance from the king, Maddie has barely enough to live on, from what de Moreville allows her. But Maddie never complains. After her severe upbringing by a cruel and abusive father, she has learnt never to complain, never to be contentious but to at all times be quiet & accommodating.

I adored the relationship between Maddie and Tearlach. He is extremely protective of her. A strong, taciturn warrior, but I loved how Maddie brings out the tender and gentle side of him. Maddie too slowly emerges from her shell under Tearlach’s care. The bond that grows between them was beautiful to read.

A wonderful, sweet and tender story

Tearlach is a warrior and trains men to be ruthless soldiers. When he rescues the Kings ward his mind turns to a wife and family but sees no chance in being with Madeline. Will he find a way to claim her as his own? I liked this Highlander read. The story is fast-paced with plenty of drama and the chemistry between Tearlach and Madeline is amazing. I was hooked from beginning to end.

I liked this book. The chemistry between Tearlach and Maddie is obvious - to everyone except them. He's admired her from afar for many years, but because of her beastly father he never even tries to speak with her. She notices him, too, but is too cowed to think he'd ever be interested in her. Complicating matters is the fact that she's a noble and he's a guardsman. And then they're separated when her father is imprisoned.

Maddie is finally happy, out from under the rule of her father. She lives a quiet life in the country and hopes that the king will forget about trying to find her a husband. While out for a walk, she accidentally slips and falls down a cliff. She's trapped. She knows that no one knows where she is and that it's unlikely that anyone will come looking for her. But who should happen to come along? Tearlach.

A bit too coincidental.

But their relationship deepens, despite the fact that he sees her as out of his league and she lacks the confidence she needs to feel like there's a chance for them. Then fate intervenes, and not in a good way. Her warden wants her dowry and will do anything to get it.

I adored the hero in this book - the tortured, self-sacrificing, honorable, fourth son Tearlach. He loves but will not allow himself to have that which "belongs" to another man, even if that man doesn't deserve the bonnie lass. Author E. Elizabeth Watson does a skillful job of ramping up the sweet agony of unrequited love until our hero unleashes his desire. Great read. Great writing. Great story-telling from Watson. I look forward to many more.

I received this book from net galley for an honest review. Thank you!!

This novel was a nice read. It brings a choice between love and duty, which may people face during this time period. Lady Madeline Crawford is a meek individual due to the upbringing by her father. She never complains or voices her opinions, which frustrated me since I felt she needed to speak up for herself, which she will gradually develop throughout the novel. She becomes a ward of the king due to her father's imprisonment. She is a ward of Lord Henry de Moreville, who plans a marriage to his son to get Madeline's dowry. However, he did not predict how Teàrlach MacGregor would influence Madeline's life.
Teàrlach is a fourth son and a warrior. He received employment from Moreville and finds Madeline living as his ward. He used to work for her father and stayed there because he liked and cared for Madeline, but it could never be more. He felt he could not be more for her, him as a fourth son and her a lady and ward of the king.
Teàrlach and Madeline get to know each other and begin to fall in love. Teàrlach taught Madeline to read. Madeline has never had anyone who truly cared for her. Both are torn between duty and love as Madeline's wedding to another man approaches. Teàrlach wants to marry Madeline, but feels he is not good enough. Madeline wants to marry Teàrlach, but cannot disobey the orders of the king. What will the two sacrifice in order to be together or will they follow their duty above all else?

Teàrlach MacGregor.... swoon worthy. Man of few words, but manages to win over Lady Madeline. She is living quietly with a few servants awaiting news of a betrothal from the King. She sees herself as weak and slow, but is none of those things. She has a core of steel inside her. Teàrlach sees it and falls in love with her.

Their romance was built up quite well. I enjoyed seeing them at each stage, cheering for them. Letting loose a few tears for them. A very enjoyable historical romance for me.

This was the first time I can remember reading a Medieval Romance and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It features my favorite romance novel guy – a swoon-worthy protective hero. Who doesn’t love a sexy highlander?
Madeline is an uneducated yet smart and strong heroine. She started out as fairly meek and with good reason. Her father was a brute who oppressed her horribly and refused to let her learn to read. She was illiterate through no fault of her own, but she was also inquisitive and highly intelligent.
The hero, Tearlach, recognizes and admires her intelligence. He even teaches her to read. How swoon-worthy is that??
Madeline certainly came into her own at the end, which I really loved. Naturally, women were supposed to be meek and mild in that time period, but Madeline proved she was no shrinking violet when it came to choosing her own destiny.
Enjoyable sweeping romance from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

To me, this book really rates as a 3.7.
I'll share first what I loved and then what I hate. This review won't have any spoilers, which is probably one reason why I rated it low.

I really liked these characters, Tearlach and Madeline. I thought that they made a great pair-ish. I thought that he was the perfect hero, perfect protector and I thought that their relationship was really sweet. The tension was built up perfectly and I thought it really made me feel like I was Madeline, blushing all the time.

I thought that the pace of the book was great, up to about 2/3 of the book the pace was great. It really goes be stick to each word and not cause my eyes to wander and skim. The plot was...okay. It was realistic if that was what the author was going for. It was believable.

But it felt like some many different things could have made a better plot and were eluded to in the book. But the last 100-200 pages it felts like the author had to stick with one, so let's stick with the easiest one. Then last-minute was like, "oh that's too easy!" and then added an obstacle that felt like just a little speed bump but that speed bump didn't slow anything down, it just caused the end to wrap up faster.

Then the antagonist to me didn't feel like he really drove a wedge or had a real believable motivation for what he was doing other than he was a jerk and greedy. Which kind of leeks into the protagonist side, our heroes, it didn't seem like there was a real obstacle for them not to be together, they were just making excuses. I don't really like the heroine that much either who didn't have much change happens with her throughout the book, only until the end and then that didn't even seem really real. When she gets all firey and indignant towards the end, it didn't feel real, like she'd really broken out of her shell like that.

I would recommend this book to someone else but only because it is a quick read, the tension is great, the love scenes are great and it's really all about Tearlach.

The story was surprisingly good.
There was really no heavy drama included, which is nice and really focused on the slow-burn-blooming love between Maddie and Tearlach.
I also loved the part where Maddie was like on the rooftop, and Tearlach saw her and basically was about to strip in front of her. My goodness, I couldn't really get that out of my mind hahahah I was so embarrassed I felt like I'm peeping on the two haha

Moving on, while reading first few chapters, I had the feels of dnf-ing the book as it was quite bland at the start, but I continued reading because I just love the small interactions between Maddie and Tearlack.
I also thought, this book could've had less chapters but realised in the end that it only felt right to really read into what they all feeling or thinking.
I still didn't like the way "nay" was used, as the way felt weird included in simple English sentences. Feels like it's better used in another way or when their brogue accent are present.

Overall, this was a considerably better and comfortable story than the first book.
So glad I read through the end.

Excellent read! E.Elizabeth Watson’s artistically superb writing draws you right into the story of Tearlach MacGregor and Lady Madeline Crawford. The human condition, strength and weaknesses, are born out through a tale of secret love and the hierarchically societal norms of the times. The reader is taken through all their own emotions of frustrating young love, hardships, heartbreak, and then elation and cheering as the two find their way. These were two of my favorite characters of Ms. Watson’s to-date!
