This slime book has an introduction and it tells you what slimes they have and on that same page it tells you the number the page has for making it.

This is the perfect book for science teachers who like to get their students into hands on projects. It's also great for grandma's for entertaining the little ones and mom's to keep their children busy away from the tv and computer. Lots of recipes for different textures and colors. The pictures are colorful and the recipes are easy to follow.

It is HUGELY disingenuous to claim the recipes are 'totally borax free!' - right there, in the title, and also in the text of the book. And then to have most of the recommended activators on the list because they contain boric acid.*

After that, the book is essentially two recipes with other 'recipes' the same thing but 'add this or that' ingredient. I'm unsure, except to maybe add filler (pun not intended), why Jagan writes each of the variations as a full recipe, including often word-for-word directions and nearly identical 'you need these supplies and ingredients, between them. Why not have 'here is recipe 1 and here are the variations' and 'here is recipe 2 with its variations' and then have the variations in small paragraphs following the original recipe. Granted, the entire book would be about 6 pages, but the current book is only essentially about 6 pages anyway but now with wasted paper (though at least they have a ebook version which I was fortunate my library had - with all of the photos my ebook reader cannot handle it, but my laptop can).

Also, I have to ask, crunchy slime? Why? and Bubbly, foamy slime that only last a couple weeks, at best, why? Given that these are the bulk of the variations, I spent much of the book asking Why?

I'm glad I got this one from the library and can return it to them.

*I am fully aware that borax and boric acid are two different chemicals. But i) in most slime recipes with borax, it is included because during the slime-making process borax breaks down to boric acid; and ii) it is the boron, contained in both chemicals, that is the problem. Substituting boric acid for borax does essentially nothing to make the recipes 'safer' for children.

Am I too old to slime? The author does not cover this topic. In point of fact, amid all the fun, an ideal age for slime is not indicated. Less than four could be tricky, because slime could be mistaken for food. Older than eight could be too old.

There are many many many recipes for slime. So much slime! So little time!

But what to do with slime once it has been made?.....There must be more ideas than are presented here.

Reconnaissance for a weekend with my 6yr old niece. The diametrical opposite of ‘Slime 101’. Strong in critical success factor content, yet lacking in visual appeal. This book instills a deeper understanding of the science behind why certain ingredients react to produce slime and how to perfect your creations. I appreciate how the author categorizes slimes into beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels. This helps reinforce expectations for the ambitious slime maker.

Ihan ok limakirja.
