James Morgan: outlaw in a ruthless biker club, the Bastard Legion. Willing to do whatever he must to claw his way to the top of the club’s hierarchy.
Two things stand in the way of his ambitions: his heroin-addicted brother and his bisexuality. In Morgan’s world, his attraction to men is a death sentence, and he has no desire to pursue it… until he tangles with Luc Sinclair.
Luc Sinclair: fellow Bastard Legion biker. Tattoo artist. Rebel who wants out of a club he’s grown to despise.
Luc has a sister he’s protecting from a Legion ex-boyfriend. Saving her makes him a target. Morgan intervenes, and all bets are off. The sex is as fierce and passionate as it is dangerous. But when Morgan’s junkie brother learns of the relationship, he sees a way to advance in the Legion and take out a brother he hates. Their three worlds collide—one is left for dead, another fighting for life, and the bond between them broken.
In a dark and violent world where it’s every man for himself, finding their way back to each other and the only truth they’ve ever found will be a long, hard fight.
BD Roca grew up in Brisbane, Australia and still misses the scent of frangipani and living in funky old Queensland houses. When not writing, she enjoys yoga, and the occasional glass of pinot, although not in combination. She finds writing about herself in third person kind of strange & is thinking about switching to first ;)
4.5 Stars I’d never heard of the author but I enjoy “biker” stories and have found few that I like in MM. This was an absolute winner! It’s set in Australia, but I guess some aspects of motorcycle clubs are universal. Morgan, at first, appears to be the cliché biker dude, but there’s much more to him, not including the bisexuality he’s kept locked in the closet his whole life. When he rescues Luc from a beating, it’s sets the stage for their doomed love affair. Told in three parts, the first two segments are set in the past, revolving around efforts by both men to resolve their family issues and leave the club behind. Part three is set in the present, around 12 years after parts 1&2. I was also quite pleased by alternating POV’s, combined with an emotional and compelling plot. The writing was excellent, the pacing quite good with a great buildup of tension that kept my attention riveted. This was one that I couldn’t stop reading until it was finished at 2 A.M. There were a few things I’d wish were done differently, mostly in part three. It didn’t flow quite as well and events moved a little too quickly, in my view. There weren’t a ton of sex scenes, and all were integral to the storyline, with a decent sizzle factor. I’m definitely going back to read the first novella, involving Morgan’s nephew. I think it will fill in some of the intervening years of Morgan’s absence from Luc. The story is gritty, rather dark in places, with some violence that’s not too graphic, except one disturbing murder scene. I’m giving this one a strong recommendation.

I am a huge fan of the Sons of Anarchy television series so finding a novel focused on a motorcycle club was exciting for me. I really like the way B.D. Roca builds the threat level in Broken Sun. I read the first half of the story on the edge of my seat, concerned not just for the safety of Morgan and Luc as individuals, but also for their relationship. From the beginning of Broken Sun, Roca establishes that Luc is in a precarious situation because he is protecting his sister, who has run away from her Legion member boyfriend. This results in his beating, which could have been much worse if Morgan had not stepped in. Luc then further compromises his safety by asking to leave the Legion. Roca communicates the air of tension in the clubhouse when Luc asks his question and the reply he gets compounds the difficulty of the position he is putting himself in:
The other book in this series was one of my favorite reads last year and I was really excited to get my hands on this one. The first half or so was fantastic and I couldn't put it down. The chemistry between the two guys jumped off the page. The situation they're in is super tough and you feel like it's them against the rest of the world. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen and if they were going to make it out alive and together.
The magic started to wane for me though as the story hit it's peak. The blurb says "the bond between them broken" but I guess I underestimated what that was going to mean to the story. There is a huge gap where they are not together and that's just not a story twist I like. If an author puts the MC's through hell I want to see them come through it together. These two did eventually find their way back together and the book ends in a HEA but by that time all the magic was gone for me. I had a hard time buying their reunion and all the events that happened from that point on. It was about 40% of the book so it was a big chunk for me to be disheartened by.
It wasn't until almost the end of this book that I realized how these characters tied in to the characters from the first book. That being said, this can be read just fine as a standalone. I think this author is very good and I hope that more people will try her/his books. The reason I didn't rate this higher was due to my dislike of the way the plot went but I don't think that's reflective of the author's talent. A lot of readers may have no problem with it.
I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is a dark, gritty and intense read. Morgan and Luc are enmeshed in the same biker gang - Morgan as an ambitious enforcer and Luc as a club member desperate to get out. Theirs is a world of dangerous scheming conflicted loyalties.
I loved both of these men. Luc risks his life for his sister’s safety. He is a talented tattoo artist desperate for a chance to start fresh outside the club. He is gentle and a little naive and he isn’t as good at hiding his sexuality as he thinks he is. And every time I wanted to feel sorry for him, he surprised me with his strength and resilience.
Morgan is careful, he’s ruthless and he is ambitious. He can’t see a life for himself outside of the club and he is willing to sacrifice himself to keep those he cares about safe.
I loved the connection between Luc and Morgan. Morgan’s almost childlike wonder at the chemistry between him and Luc is wonderful. I was less keen on the drawn out angst and miscommunication between Luc and Morgan but when they were together, they were pretty much perfect.
I really enjoyed this story - my only reservation is that the plot seems to ramble. The story spans more than a decade and as well as the time lapse, there are several subplots that don’t necessarily add to the main storyline. At times, the focus drifts from Morgan and Luc to the people around them. The result is uneven pacing. For me, too many important events are summarised or recapped while less important moments are explored in detail.
B.D. Roca is a new author to me, so when she contacted me to review a biker story, I jumped at the opportunity. There’s nothing like a good biker story! What I then proceeded to read was a delight for the senses.
Set in Australia, Luc and Morgan are not the most compatible people. Morgan wants to climb the ranks of the club, and Luc just wants out without dying in the process, which appears less and less likely as each scene passes. The plot was great, and the pacing was on point.
There is a large gap of time between the beginning and the final get-together, but while I was sad to have the missing years, the result allowed for infinitely more maturity on Luc’s part, and the way the men come together is more special for the lapse. It is here, however, that the pacing falls apart a bit. It isn’t enough to throw you out of things, but it is noticeable.
Slipping into the minds of each main character allows for greater understanding of the whole. The chemistry between the men is strong, their pull toward each other palpable, and sexy times are super hot. The character growth on both parts is massive, especially with the ten plus year break between them.
Broken Sun is a gritty, evocative book. The situations faced by the men with regard to the motorcycle club are beautifully dark, and really make the book seem more realistic. Favors done equal favors owed, and no good deed goes unpunished.
I am rating this book at four strong stars, and I highly recommend you give it a try!
I voluntarily read an ARC copy of this book for Divine Magazine from Dreamspinner Press with hopes for but no obligation to provide a review.

I really enjoyed this story about two guys who were members of a biker gang, though each for different reasons. Morgan had been working his way up the ranks, known as a tough guy who gets things done but pretty much sticks to himself. He steps in when he sees fellow member, Luc, about to face off against three other members. Their connection grows from there.
Being gay in the biker world is not a good thing, and Morgan has put those feelings aside for a long time. Luc sparks something in him though. He is sassy and outspoken and one of the few people who isn’t afraid to speak up to Morgan. Luc calls Morgan out pretty quickly, and instigates things that Morgan finds hard to resist. But Luc has his own agenda of extricating himself from the Club, something very few are actually able to do. But he comes up with a plan and manages to convince Morgan he needs to do the same so that they can explore their connection. That is easier said than done, of course.
Nothing is easy in this way of life. There is pressure from all sides, including Morgan’s drug addicted, drug making brother who first puts Morgan on the line to fix his screw-ups before blackmailing him for money and more. On top of this, Morgan’s position in the club is changing and he is given an offer he can’t refuse, which he takes in order to keep Luc safe and buy his freedom.
My heart broke for these guys and the lives they were forced to live. I so badly wanted them to get out and find happiness together, which, after a decade of them each suffering in various ways, they finally are able to accomplish. This story contained much of the elements as the previous book, which took place in the same world, but could definitely be read on its own. I really enjoyed meeting these guys and loved Luc’s snark and boldness. He maintained it throughout and it was quite entertaining at times. These guys made a really good match – Luc truly brought out the better man in Morgan and showed him a life where that man could exist. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more in this series.
James Morgan is an enforcer for the Bastard Legion gang. He owns his own garage and makes a good living, which he is trying to keep quiet. His brother, Steve, deals drugs for the Legions, but is losing his credibility because he is a user. Morgan is controlled, strong, and he intimidates everyone. He also hides a secret.
Luc Sinclair is also a member of the Legions, but he’s had enough. His priority is helping his sister to get away from an abusive ex, who’s a member of the Legions. He’ll do anything to save his sister, face getting beat up, even confront the leader, Neal Garioch, and his second in command, Heller. Luc is even willing to buy his way to freedom because he wants to have a good life, return to college, and open his own tattoo business.
When Morgan runs up on Luc being attacked by his sister’s ex, and other gang members, he saves him. But Morgan finds that Luc isn’t afraid, and he’ll do anything to protect his family—even face Garioch, no matter the outcome.
Morgan and Luc start to make a connection, and Luc knows there are ways for Morgan to get out of the bad environment. But when devious gang members, and Morgan’s brother, start to threaten and harm what’s his, Morgan takes things into his own hands.
Both Morgan and Luc have their own stories as to why they got involved in the Legion. Both also have the desire to find someone they can spend the rest of their lives with, but for Luc and Morgan, freedom from the Legion’s doesn’t come without a price, and one of them will have to sell his soul to Garioch and the Bastard Legion.
B.D. Roca delivers the type of novel I crave. It’s gritty, suspenseful, violent, dark, and offers many emotional and powerful moments between Morgan and Luc. For both Morgan and Luc, family is an issue on different levels, and both have to deal with the turmoil in their own way. The series is set in Australia: Parts one and two are set in the past. Part three is many years later. I felt the way the story flowed just added to the intriguing plot.
The first novella in the City to City series is Happy Birthday. Don’t let the title fool you. It tells the story of Morgan’s nephew Nick, and Jake. As for me, I will be watching out for the next installment in this gritty series.
This is the first book in this series that I have read but I have to be honest in saying that I was blown away with everything that happened in this book. I will definitely be reading the next one when it comes out it'd there is another book on this series. This book was raw and powerful. It had what I would picture if someone was in this situation as a bit of truth on what would happen if they was in a strong biker Gang that does the things this biker gang does. Like I said a very powerful very raw read.
Morgan is one of those enforcers that you do not mess with. He has power and strength behind him. He is a lot scary and very unapproachable. Not to mention very straight.
Luc is isn the same biker group but not as high up on the list of importance. But still no less part of the group. So this means that he has to hide in plain site. He cannot be honest about the fact that he is gay or if he does it could mean death by he men that are meant to have his back.
Morgan is definitely closeted and as Luc watches him from a distance and realizes this about him, Luc cannot help to peruse him. Especially after Morgan stepped in and spared him from a beating from fellow club member over a completely different matter. The closer these two end up being the more dangerous of a game it becomes.
When Morgan's brother blows the lid off these two men, Morgan steps up and takes he heat and helps Luc to get out of the group. But this does not come without many consequences and those consequences include Morgan walking away from Luc.
This is not where their story ends but honestly it is just the beginning. To find out what happens and if these two will or will not end up together in the end, well you will have to read it. It is truly a brilliant read. I definitely look forward to the next book in this series when it comes out.
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review
Gritty. Brutal. Violence is the order of the day, and weakness will get you killed. So will liking another man, never mind loving him. Set in Melbourne, Australia, this is the story of two members of the Bastard Legion motorcycle club, who discover that survival of the fittest can mean more than one thing. They have very different starting points, their family situation is nothing alike, but they bond over a physical attraction that will not be denied, no matter the danger. Of course it leads to nothing good, and leaves the men separated and fighting for their lives. But even though the darkness seems overwhelming and the odds are less than favorable, there is an underlying strength in both men that kept me hoping they might make it – not to a happy ending, but at least one that is not a complete disaster. I am relieved to say that I was not disappointed.
Life in any biker club isn't as glamorous as some seem to think it is. People have seen Sons of Anarchy and think it's just entertainment. It's supposed to be all fun and games and making money. But they don't realize until it's too late that life in the club is hard and violent and often grizzly. This book, this series, has shown a lot of that impact. It was surprisingly realistic and really good.
Being in the Legion motorcycle club is all Morgan has really ever known. There are strict rules about certain things and certain things that if they come up, will get you killed. Being gay is a definite one. So Morgan has buried that part of his bisexuality and went on with life. Until a random night in a bar, when he runs into fellow clubber Luc. The looks between them alone would have gotten them killed, but they push it further as Luc has lusted over Morgan since he's laid eyes on him. And Morgan is drawn to Luc like a moth to a flame. They can't resist each other and things blossom quickly. But they are found out by Morgan's brother and in an attempt to blackmail Morgan, Luc is beaten almost to death and Morgan has to toe the line. Things quickly change. Morgan knows he has to get Luc out of the club like he been trying to do and now. He does but at a cost that breaks the bond and puts him in over his head. And hurts his family. Now he has a choice to make and it may be too late to make things right.
When I first read Happy Birthday, which is book 1, I hated Morgan with such a passion. He hurt Nick so bad. But stupid me, when I started this book, I didn't put it together that this Morgan was the one that did all that damage. I know. I'm an idiot. But when I did put it together, I had a hard time at first. To see this softer side of Morgan. To see that he loved someone and that it was a man. It pulled at me. The more I read, though, the more I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. Yes, he made some bad decisions. Very bad. But deep down he was doing what he thought best to protect what he loved. It just backfired. More people than he thought knew what was going on and they weren't going to let it go. He knew he had to save Luc and it shattered him in a bad way. And even though he became someone almost evil, you can't help but feel his brokenness. The pull of everything getting to him and pulling him under. Drowning him with no way out. The one thing I hated more than anything, though, was how long it took for Morgan to get back to Luc. And if the fact it wasn't for a job for the Legion, he wouldn't have at all. But when you feel you aren't worthy or deserving of such beauty, it's understandable.
Doing things we have to do to protect others isn't always the best. Especially when it ends up hurting you or them. We have to remember sometimes there is another way, and if there isn't, we have to find a way to make it work and move on.
This was one hell of a book. And series. It has some harsh truths and violence in both books. But in order to be accurate, there has to be. I recommend them. Very very good.
This was an excellent read for me. It's the type of novel I really get into. Dark, violent, emotional on all levels and filled with two very dynamic MC's: Morgan and Luc.
This 2 book series and starts off with the short story, Happy Birthday which actually takes place after this book which is novel length - but it makes sense once you start reading. So yes, read Happy Birthday first, then Broken Sun.
Spoiler: I wish I had realized that the Uncle in Happy Birthday is the MC in Broken Sun, it actually would have made more sense when I started the 2nd book, even though he's pretty despicable, you learn why and, of course, he redeems! I spent too much time confused/guessing if it was and not focusing on the story. Easy enough to put together since he mentions his nephews name, Nick, right away.
James Morgan is a ruthless biker with the goal to go far in the hierarchy of his club, the Legion. Luc Sinclair is a member of the Legion too, but he wants to get out, and he needs to find a way to leave the club and stay alive.
When Morgan and Luc start to see each other, they know that they risk their lives. Being Gay in a Biker Club is like having a death wish. They’re cautious, until things go wrong and life and death get in their way. I’m a huge fan of biker’s books and Sons of Anarchy (Jax Teller forever). This book was for me, I had to read it because you know, gay biker and all. I was a little bit disappointed.
The writing is good, the author developed the characters very well, Luc and Morgan are two beautiful men and souls. They are passionate with each other but also very complex. They’re also very hot.
The story and the plot were good, but too long, way too long. There’s barely no action, clearly here, the author angled the book on the characters’ psyche more than of the biker life style and it’s not a bad thing but the story stretched too much, things were going around in circles, sometimes I lost the tread of my reading.
It’s too bad, because, really, the author has a very good potential. The writing is good and well built (without the too long parts). It’s not because the book wasn’t for me that it doesn’t deserve a try. I’m sure you’ll love Morgan and Luc and try a ride with them.
For me it’s 3 OptimuMM’s for them.
