I have read other books on the book of Daniel before, so this wasn't a new topic to me, though I would not claim to be any sort of expert on it.

What threw me the most was the constant illuminating of why the book of Daniel was real and true and not really written by someone pretending to be Daniel during the time of the Maccabees. I guess I just take it for granted that the Bible is the Bible, it is what it says it is; no more, no less. I don't tend to rub elbows with people who insist that it isn't true and if I do, we don't really discuss it.

So that was unexpected, but not bad. It's always good to see how what has been discovered matches the Bible.

I don't agree with all of what the author was saying about the interpretations of some of the prophecies and while the prophecies are repetitious, the discussion of them doesn't have to be. It was in this. Not a bad thing if you want everything covered, but it was a bit much for me.

Not bad, but a bit over my head at times. Not the fault of the book, completely reader error on this one. It just makes me realize that I have a lot more to learn. I guess that's true of most of us regarding most things!

Recommended if you want to learn more about the book of Daniel and don't mind repetition. 3 solid stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Moody Publishers for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

This is an excellent, detailed bible commentary on the book of Daniel.
Daniel is both a simple Old Testament book but also perhaps the most complicated and misunderstood as the second part involves prophesies of the end times. In this regard it is perhaps enjoyed for 6 chapters and then the second half treated like the majority of the book of Revelation in the New Testament. It is this aspect of confusing and hard to comprehend prophesies that restrict many Christians from studying these books.

Yet like Revelation there is the promise of a blessing in trying to understand these scriptures.

Therefore, it is a great joy to read such a comprehensive study commentary.

The author is from the evangelical wing of conservative theologians and he takes great delight in how recent academic insights mean Daniel can be more readily accepted as the actual author.
The beauty of belief and faith mean you can focus on the historical Daniel, a man of his time and set aside more liberal scholarship. However, this book does not avoid these controversies and makes a strong case for taking the bible at face value.

This gives Daniel, more of a compelling message, in terms of his life in exile, his faithfulness and visions.
We need a book like this commentary to understand both the spiritual messages as well as the signs around the Return of the Messiah.

It is not a book in the usual sense, to read as a book, but a study vehicle to enhance one’s understanding of the bible. A commentary that although full of biblical references and background information that is all it is seeking to do and why it was written. But from its enlightened energy it therefore enlarges one’s faith and broadens your knowledge. It is not doing the work for you though, so it is best appreciated slowly, in bible study and searching for truth.

This one book enlightened me but it is just the start in my struggle to understand the overall picture. There are books that pull the end times together but this can’t do so fully as its focus is on Daniel with references to other verses that support these views.

A great book, showing why we need to understand all of the book of Daniel. A good place to start if you want to commit to the study with a prayerful heart and an enquiring mind.

This is a good little commentary on the book of Daniel. The author offers sound Biblical interpretations of almost every verse in each chapter. Each chapter is broken down verse by verse in an easy to follow format and easy to understand for the layperson. This commentary is not by any means exhaustive nor in-depth but it does make a good introduction into Daniel. If you're looking for a more detailed commentary I would recommend something more exhaustive.

Of course, no commentary is without faults. There are some eschatology notes in here that I personally don't agree with. And I' sure you will find some disagreements of your own as well if you decide to purchase this commentary. One of the points I don't agree with, for example, is the interpretation of the 70 weeks. I understand that there are several interpretations regarding this portion but just a heads up. Mr. Whitcomb believes the 70 weeks will be completed during the second half of the Tribulation. I'm not partial to this interpretation and if you're not either, this is something to keep in mind.

But overall, I give this book 4/5 stars as it does a good job of explaining this complicated book in a concise and clear manner.

The book of Daniel is one of those books in the Bible that can be difficult to decipher, what with it being a book of prophesy. Finding a good commentary to help you better understand can be a struggle. Some commentaries are just as hard to understand as the text itself but Daniel: Everyday Bible Commentary by John C. Whitcomb is a commentary that can be used by anyone!

Taking you verse by verse, the author takes the time to break down each verse to help the reader better discern the text. With a considerable amount of historical background also included, this is a wonderful resource that any Bible scholar would treasure. Highly recommend!

"Daniel" is a commentary on Daniel. The author gave some background information about the book (when written, who wrote it, etc.) and then commented on each (small) grouping of verses as he worked through Daniel. He talked about the conservative response to liberal views about when the book was written and supposed contradictions in Daniel. He provided word studies, cultural and historical background information, and preaching-style insights into the meaning of the text. It works best if you read the passage and then read his comments. I thought he did a good job of helping explain potentially confusing verses. The commentary was more academic than conversational in tone, but I had no trouble understanding his points. Overall, I'd recommend this useful Bible-study tool.

An easy to read, detailed enough commentary of Daniel for the average Bible study leader. It gives me a good overview of the book, covers the contentious issues, raises some of the critical objections to the book and then shows where those objections fail. Great to see this get re-released.

Daniel Is a heart pounding book. You say to me a heart pounding book? It is a book about Daniel, how can it be a heart pounding book? Well let me tell you - it tells you all about how it is a book of prophecy - prophecy of CHRIST's coming - and in it seems a lot of the signs point to what we are facing now - it goes into detail what Daniel was facing as well - it was so eye opening - how GOD used the HOLY SPIRIT even then and how we are to use HIM now to understand what the prophecies mean. Awsome.

This is a great verse by verse commentary of the book of Daniel. There is a lot of historical background and the author spends much time explaining how it was not written later by an anonymous author.
The explanations of the dream sections are particularly useful
Great book!
