The Real Deal is my very first book by Lauren Blakely. She’s the author that I have bunches of her books on my tbr list, but I just never get to them. So when the opportunity came up to read this one, I grabbed it, and I’m so glad I did!
April Hamilton lives in New York and has built a successful career as a body painter. She’s an artist that prefers her canvas to be human. She loves what she does. What she hasn’t been as successful at is dating. Her previous boyfriend, the one she thought she might be falling in love with, said he was divorced. But he lied. Now April is on a man diet, concentrating on her career. She actually has a big job she hopes to get, one that could really do things for her reputation.
Every year the entire Hamilton clan descends to April’s family home in Wistful, Connecticut for a huge family reunion. This isn’t the traditional family reunion, though. This includes a week long competition with her father’s partner’s family in all sorts of games. April’s family loves her. She’s the youngest. Ever since she spilled the truth about her ex-boyfriend, they have been trying to fix her up with eligible men in Wistful in hopes of getting her to move home. They don’t understand her career choice and think their daughter would be happier at home. Rather than continue to fight them on the blind dates, April has decided to hire a boyfriend for hire from Craigslist. Actually, her close friend recommended him but she saw his ad and it was hilarious.
Theo Banks works as a bartender. Theo has a past, one he’s not particularly proud of. But he’s legit now, everything is on the straight and narrow, including trying to pay off an old debt of his brother’s. He’s so close to having enough. That’s why he came up with the boyfriend for hire gig. Theo has a talent for being a sort of a chameleon. He can talk in any accent, he can be suave and business like, he can be a bad boy, he can be loving, he can be rude. He can be anything his client’s need. But the gigs are strictly platonic. Hand holding, kiss on the cheek, an arm over the shoulders is as far as it goes.
When Theo and April meet, the sparks immediately fly. These two have instant chemistry. But it’s more than that. They have the same dry sense of humor. They seem like they never stop talking. Things just click. On the train ride to Wistful, they use the time to get to know each other, to construct their back story.

Theo isn’t prepared for April’s overbearing family. But somehow, he just slides right in and wins them over. He actually enjoys being a part of them. He is even more surprised when he discovers the reunion is actually a competition. He can do this, he loves a good contest. He and April slide right into their roles as a couple. It doesn’t take long, though, for the line between real and make believe to become blurred. For real feelings to begin to form. Can they cross that line, enjoy their time in Wistful, then walk away when it’s time to go home? Or do they even want to walk away from what is growing between them?
“There’s a part of me that’s starting to think bits and pieces of us seem real. And the real thing is far too dangerous. Maybe this started as a ruse, but it’s turning into something else.”
This story was just adorable. Theo and April were perfect. They fell hard and fast. But Theo has to deal with his past. April has never wanted for anything and he feels like she deserves so much more than him. How will she react when she finds out all the details? Will she walk away like his last girlfriend did? I loved the way these two bantered back and forth, the way they invented their history as a couple. I think I smiled most of the way through this book. And it had a perfect epilogue.
I’ve waited so long to finally read one of Lauren Blakely’s books and now I’m kicking myself. This book had every one of the things that make reading for me so enjoyable. I hope it does the same for you.

I enjoyed this immensely! Neither Theo nor April were looking for any type romantic relationship. And then, BAM! It smacks them upside the head in the best way. I adored seeing them try to navigate real life between the rules of their deal. Lauren Blakely is such a queen of the rom com!

I loved this book! Absolutely adored it.
This is one of those romances that just makes you swoon. I found myself falling in love with Theo right along with April. He was the absolute most perfect book boyfriend. Even though he was supposed to be "acting" you could tell that he really wasn't. The chemistry between the two characters was just off the charts. They both complimented each other really well and their witty banter was hilarious. I loved their little "remember when" stories, they were so fun to read.
April's family dynamic was great, as well. They had a blast with each other and I loved their idea of Lawn Olympics. All of the secondary characters had something to offer and there was some sort of interaction with each. I don't know if this is a series, but I could see at least one spin off from it.
The story line itself flowed really well and was well thought out. Everything happened organically and while the climax was completely expected, it was still done in a way that made me swoon and made me sad, simultaneously.
I can't express how good this book was. If you're looking for just an all over funny, romantic read then look no further. You have found it. Lauren Blakely has proven to be a really great author and I look forward to reading future books by her.

Oh how I loved this book! All of Lauren Blakely's books, in fact. The Real Deal is a "hired boyfriend/date trope. Although this trope is high in predictability, the entertainment factor is always a plus. Especially when the book is written with the romantic comedy genre. And being written by Lauren Blakely always adds more fun.
April and Theo were a perfect couple. I felt this strongly even before they met. Each perspective gave me the perfect amount of insight to come to this conclusion. When they actually met, they "clicked." It wasn't only physical attraction between them that was instant. They were both good people. Theo had a past he wasn't proud of however when you learn the details, you will love him even more. April comes from a wealthy family and grew up with a life full of love and happiness. But April had her own issues due to her family's high expectations of her relationship status, or lack of.
April lives in NYC, a couple of hours away from her family's Connecticut hometown. She has no desire to move back home even though her family persists that she should. They have in mind that if they match-make her with a man from their hometown, she'll want to stay. For the most part, April is able to avoid her overbearing family. However, that reprieve is short-lived because she must now prepare to travel back home for the family fun reunion. If April has to go back, she will not go alone. Since April has been burned in the romance department, she is decidedly single. Now April needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.
Theo is a lot of things these days. He is a full time bartender and part time date/boyfriend for hire. Theo has a financial debt he is desperately trying to satisfy. He is so close to being debt free. As I said earlier, Theo has a couple of secrets. They are revealed to the reader as the book goes on. However, Theo's secrets are kept tightly hidden, locked up away from April. I will say Theo is not completely dishonest with April. In fact, he surprisingly finds himself revealing bits and pieces of his past to April. And as their fake relationship turns to something more, Theo is desperate to find the right moment to confess it all before she finds out. You can probably infer what will happen and I'll leave it at that. I would hate to spoil this book for you.
The Real Deal is a fun and flirty read. In addition, there is some angst and sexy, intimate moments that are off the charts, scorching hot. I loved every minute of this fast paced read and as always look forward to more from this author.
The Real Deal is a standalone novel written in first-person perspective from both Theo and April's POV.

Story 🌟🌟🌟🌟
This was so freakin fluffy and so steamy, wow!
April loves her family like crazy, every four years they make this huge family reunion in her mother’s B&B. They do a lot of games and the winner gets to choose to which Organisation he or she wants to donate the money they win.
But since an idiot broke April’s heart something changed. Now her family consists of matchmakers who want to couple her with all the amazing (haha) men in her hometown.
But April does not want to be matched with a hometown boy. She wants to stay in New York and do what she loves - be a body painter.
So her friend shows her an ad she instantly loves - a boyfriend you can book for a weekend - or for a couple of days. An arm candy she can show to her parents, so they stop pushing her into the dating life.
But life is never like you plan it and so April and Theo connect with their first message and with that a home town trip with confusing feelings, funny moments, family events and love starts.
God, i loved this so much. I had so much fun reading this book - it was so cute and fluffy and I was grinning like an idiot the whole time.
If you want something cute but steamy, you should definitely pick this book up!

Oh. My. God. April was like the most heartwarming person I have ever read about. She was so friendly and pure but in some way also extremely naughty and also 100% funny.
She was just my favorite kind of girl.
And Theo - our wonderful broken boy - with the wicked grin and the mysterious past.
He was kind, friendly, politely and such a wonderful human being ♥️ He was an adorable cinnamon roll you wanted to hug all the time.
And April’s family - oh my god. Like, that could be my family 100%. A bunch of crazy people who want to win but also to have fun.
I loved her family so much - especially her parents. They were so cute and protective.
Also I loved Theos family - His Brother and his brothers love of his life. They were perfect in a different way, but I loved them either way.
Relationships 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This book was so freakin cute, I thought I would die. They were so sweet and caring to each other but then there was also this crazy sexual tension between them.
I actually screamed in delight when they kissed.
Next to being the absolute cutest little things in the world, those two were also extremely funny, supportive of each other and they talked about everything. (Hm, not everything I guess)
This was a relationship I could look forward too! But also there was drama and all.
I loved it.
And the relationship between Heath and Theo - so heartwarming and absolutely beautiful. Those two are the definition of family.
And April and her whole bunch of relatives were the messiest but also cutest thing I have read in a while.

I flew through it and would’ve finished it in one day if I didn’t need sleep so much (Silly, ill me 😣).

I received a surprise ARC of this book and am happy to say I loved it! I'm a huge fan of Lauren Blakely, and The Real Deal made me giggle all the way through. Spicy enough to arrest my attention with a genuinely likable pair of main characters, The Real Deal is a fast and enjoyable read and can be read as a stand-alone.
April is desperately in need of a boyfriend to keep the matchmakers at bay during her family's reunion, but when her best friend, Xavier, has to go away at the last minute, she's certain she's doomed. When Xavier advises April to look no further than the Craigslist ad for his friend, Theo, he assures her she'll be all set.

What a fantastic story this is. I loved it. An easy read that starts with April dreading going home for her family reunion weekend because her family is seriously into matchmaking. Obnoxiously so. April is a well known body painter, she makes a great living and is up for a coveted opportunity and is excited about that. Her family is clueless really as to what she does and all they panther to do is move back home. Not gonna happen. Her friend Xavier was her fill in arm candy for the reunion,when he's offered a chance of a lifetime and has to bow out of his commitment to her, he sets her up with a friend. A friend who is a bartender and rents himself out as a platonic boy friend. He is the master actor. She's a lot reluctant but when she responds to his ad on Craigs list and they meet it's perfect. They hit it off and she brings along her friends who are protective to make sure he's not a serial killer, and they make plans to get to know each other before and while she fails to warn him the intensity of her family and how seriously they take their reunions, these two really are so suited for each other. I loved the flow between them and how easy they seemed to fit. While Theo isn't fully honest with her about his past history it's more of an omission. But they talk easily and freely and it takes them a while to make the final leap but the tension between them is palpable. The author does a great job showing us the emotional connection between them.
Theo's brother is a problem for Theo at times. Theo feels the need to take care of him and one of the reasons he's hiring himself out is paying off a debt that was his brother's. A debt that shouldn't have been owed, I digress. Theo is well received by her family and things just take off. April takes it upon herself to call Heath, Theo's brother and invite him for the last day of the family festivities. When she overhears a conversation in part... she flips a switch. Rightfully so, although I will hand it to her, she did stop and listen to what Theo had to say. She said she needed space and he gave her that. No more than that because I'd give too much of the storyline away.
For a couple that was only supposed to be not for real, they could not have been more real. Loved the book, the characters, all of it. Stellar read.

It's made April Hamilton not want to return home but this time for the annual family reunion games she's asked her BFF Xavier to come posing as her boyfriend. When he gets a job of a lifetime he recommends Theo Banks a boyfriend for hire on with the most awesome ad on how he could be just what you needed him to be on Craigslist.

Sweet, sexy, funny and addictive. Definitely addictive, I could not put this book down. The story, a fake boyfriend for hire, was not in anyway unusual, both Theo and April had their reasons for doing this and they were hell bent on not being in a real relationship with each other, or anyone else for that matter. I fell instantly in love with Theo, I loved his sense of humour, his inadequacies, his loyalty and the way I imagine he looks. April too, had an awesome sense of humour, their banter and conversations together were heartwarming, they certainly made my heart go pitter patter. I especially loved their imaginary world. April’s family were wonderful, they gave me many laugh out loud moments. I loved the writing. Perfect. This book really is The Real Deal. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest review.

I've been in the mood for a sweet romance lately and I've heard nothing by wonderful things about Lauren Blakely.
The Real Deal was unfortunately not what I was expecting for a sucker punch romance. I feel like this was a tad bit too cheesy for my taste in romance.
April Hamilton is a strong and sassy young woman that has been single for awhile now and is on a no dating diet. She is getting tired of having her family trying to set her up on multiple dates. She has a summer reunion to attend to and needs to find a boyfriend ASAP. April is scrolling on Craigslist and finds an ad for a boyfriend for hire.
Let's me the REAL DEAL boyfriend for hire Theo Banks. Theo is the typical bad boy with tattoos and a bit of a rough past trying to settle his debts.
April hires Theo for her pretend beau for the summer reunion. Only one problem.... Theo and April have to "pretend" they like one another but somehow this game lands them in falling for each other for real.
So... my issues with this one was the cheesiness factor and found myself rolling my eyes too many times. I was hoping for more of a deep/romance connection and I felt it was just too "unreal" for me and just over the top lovey dovey... if I'm making sense?
I unfortunately also saw this story playing out before my eyes... and was expecting the story to play as it was supposed to. I was wanting MORE... and felt it was lacking in my eyes for a romance.
Overall, this was entertaining but was a tad disappointed for wanting to hit my romance fix. But, I definitely would check more out from this author. I can see why many others love her style!

The real deal is a funny, sweet and swoon worthy read. I enjoyed the banter and make believe stories between April and Theo. I also enjoyed the family and their fun reunion. Overall an enjoyable summer read !

I can't even tell you how much I loved this book. I wasn't certain I would like the tough bad boy exterior of Theo but he turned out to be not only adorable but hardly a bad boy at all! I love the trope of pretend boyfriend/engagement, so that's a natural first step toward loving this book. I also loved the hints of jealousy and cute flirting. I think my favorite surprises were that I didn't mind them falling in love over 5 days — somehow it worked — and the fact that they didn't just get intimate the first night alone together. Overall, such a fresh surprise that had me grinning throughout the whole book!

I love this book. The characters are engaging. The plot is fresh and imaginative. There is plenty of tension throughout the book to keep the reader's interest piqued. The secondary characters all have individual personalities that make them as interesting as the H and h.
The backstories are revealed in increments that keep the reader guessing. It is well-paced. The attraction between Theo and April is believable and sweet.
I wanted to gobble it all up and read the whole thing at one sitting. Unfortunately, life got in the way, and I couldn't. But... it's that good! It's sweet, cute and laugh-out-loud funny.

4.5 Sizzling Summer Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
Lauren Blakely did it again! Another fabulous romantic comedy that doesn’t take its self too seriously... I know I can always count on Miss Blakely for some laughs and abs....
April is not going to her families summer reunion without a date! She is done with the family constantly trying to fix her up just to get her to come home... Theo is a bartender with a gig on the side.... he is a rent a boyfriend... i’m sure you can tell how this all starts out... April and Theo start out as a business arrangement completely platonic... but even from their very first meeting in the park you could feel the sparks between them...
April is a fabulous female MC... loved her she was strong, independent, sassy, kind, the kind of girl you would love to be friends with... Theo was a very typical Lauren Blakely mail MC... A little bad boy, a little arrogant, a lot gorgeous with a wonderful sense of humor... oh and we cannot forget about the ABS! Their relationship was a bit Insta, but it worked for me in this book, I felt it! Loved the banter between them and you could just tell they were both very caring people that deserve this....
A bonus in this book was the fabulous setting of the summer reunion... loved getting to know April‘s family better and I love the small town vibe... I wanted to jump in and join the fun and games at this reunion... twister... the hula hoop... a scavenger hunt.... this really is the perfect summer romantic comedy💕

This was a very charming and amusing book. The hero and heroine have unique professions. April paints people for a living - not the flowers on little kids’ cheeks at the fair kind of human painting, but for music videos, a Sports Illustrated sort of swimsuit edition. Google it - it’s really a big deal for some people. She’s good and she makes a decent living. However, she hasn’t had luck in love and she’s dreading going home for her family reunion without a guy because she knows that everyone will try to match her up with guys in their quaint little Connecticut town. So she ends up hiring Theo who is a bartender who moonlights as a date for hire. He has a Craigslist ad for his talents that will just crack you up. He also is just scraping by in New York City as he’s trying to earn enough money to pay off his older brother’s debt to a former girlfriend.
Of course April and Theo start falling for each other right away. Their conversation is witty, interesting, and sexy. I always enjoy authors who can write dialogue that help you to understand why two people would fall in love with each other.

5 Real, Real Stars

First, understand this is a Terrific Rom/Com. However, I have some thoughts first of what this story brings to the table...
Each of us are unique. We are products of our genetics, how we are nurtured and what we experience in our formative years. That doesn't say whatever happened is set in stone or people have no control of their lives. It is how we react and the challenges we have to handle allow us to make changes and grow.
In Lauren Blakely's The Real Deal, she takes all of those ideas and makes them relatable. We are able to see many of the challenges these characters go through and remember possible situations we went through, too. I mean, how many times have you had to explain to your parents exactly what your career is...how just because it may not fit into the standard configuration of Lawyer, Doctor or Teacher...it is just as rewarding and fulfilling.
Or what about those who had life deal them a heartbreaking hand... where families are not picture perfect and children end up having to raise themselves. Where trying to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies shape more than what society deemed fit...
Some of these circumstances may not seem to be equally important... but then again, people can only judge from their own lives... so when presented with individual challenges...each has weight and we dig in to figure out how we handle them.
So with that being said, picture the woman who has taken the road less traveled. April Hamilton came from one of those families that was close knit, financially more than solid, was invested in what their children did with their lives and if that wasn't enough....lived in a small community.
Her family loved her unconditionally yet truly didn't understand how successful April was in her chosen profession. She was a sought after body painter... the one who made models look as if they were wearing clothes when they were naked... or created them into snarling animals. She had paid her dues in the toughest market, New York City, but to them she was still the teen who painted butterflies on kids cheeks at the town fairs. All they wanted was her to settle down and move back home.
And on April's last visit, she made a critical error; she got a little drunk and shared how she had been done wrong by the last guy she was with. An Asshat had played her good. He was juggling her and a WIFE! So when she lamented about the situation, others heard her and decided to step up.
Yup, that small community was the kind that was in Everyone's Business so when the annual family reunion approaches, April starts receiving emails about different men who are available to meet for coffee, walks or any number of other things...
Gahhh, April knew her family loved her but she was not moving back to her hometown and did not want to be the object of fix ups during this visit. She reached out to her good friend and lined him up to pretend to be in a relationship with her. Unfortunately, at the last minute, he got a professional offer for the same time he couldn't refuse.
He did have an idea, though. He told April about Theo Banks who does these type of pretend dates for a living. He is the guy you can hire to be the Break Up Guy, the Sh!t Disturber for an In Your Face Family Event, or the Best Boyfriend Ever...April is really stuck, trusts her friend as he vouches for Theo, so she reaches out.
Theo does this business of Pretend Guy and does it well. Presenting a different persona or acting has been something he has done from a very young age. He and his brother had to figure out how to keep a roof over their heads...and slowly came into understanding what they could do...As they developed into men, choices were made, lessons learned and Theo is close to making his final obligation from those years be done.
When April reaches out to Theo for this week visit, she hasn't decided yet if this is happening. They both chat a bit and from the very first moment, there is this connection. It is as if they start this dance... one comment is met with a another and soon a story is formed of how they met, their attraction and when they knew...It is banter, laughs and thrilling in the speed they connect. April decides this is happening, lays out the needs and Theo makes sure April understands the rules... He is a pretend boyfriend, not a Lay. Both are on board.
Over the course of a few days, they text... with fast responses feeding into each other... smart, funny, sarcastic, quick. Both are a bit intrigued and taken with each other...and both keep remembering no hanky-panky.
The day arrives for the train ride to the town, April is nervous because this is it, she is meeting him for the first time...Theo comes towards her and she has to just relax. They talk on the ride...and then April drops the bomb... this reunion is going to be a bit more then expected. People she does not wish to see may be there and then there is her competitive family. Theo looks deeply into April's eyes and tells her he's got it.
I LOVED THIS BOOK. The level of layers and concern for the characters is just right. The swoon worthy moments are there. The respect and consideration for April by Theo is there. April learns to appreciate being cared for...and Theo is the one to show her how wonderful she is outside of her career.
Their chemistry is off the charts and everything you could want. There is more then just fun and games, though. We do have complications which add challenges for Theo. He has some reckoning to handle and learn from.
Lauren Blakely's writing works in so many ways for so many readers. There is a reason; She just gets how to rope you in from the start, gets you to care for both of the main characters and gives you a romance to make your heart sing. What more could you want...whatever it could be... She's got that covered too!

Their chemistry is off the charts and everything you could want. There is more then just fun and games, though. We do have complications which add challenges for Theo. He has some reckoning to handle and learn from.
Lauren Blakely's writing works in so many ways for so many readers. There is a reason; She just gets how to rope you in from the start, gets you to care for both of the main characters and gives you a romance to make your heart sing. What more could you want...whatever it could be... She's got that covered too!

The Read deal is another Lauren Blakely hit! April and Theo's story sucked me in and I didn't want to put this book down until I knew what would happen. Loved every single bit of it!

Look, I get it. I totally get why Lauren Blakely is so popular. I have been a little cautious because she releases books almost monthly so I was wondering whether the quality would suffer. The Real Deal is my first book by her and I can happily report: the quality is top notch and it's one of the cutest books I've read this year.
Theo is a walking, talking, breathing actor-for-hire-menu. He isn't an escort, sex is the only thing that isn't on the list of things he will perform for his clients. He is up for everything else though. Whatever your needs, he can do it. Whether it is the cowboy with the raspy drawl, the bad boy who causes trouble or the billionaire in a suit. He's a gifted chameleon. But people don't know that he's also an ex-con man.
Liking her is dangerous. There’s a text message on my phone that’ll remind me just how dangerous it is. I need the money a lot more than I need a distraction as delicious as her.
April needs somebody to accompany her to her annual family reunion since her best friend is unavailable on short notice, which puts her in a pickle because her whole family is trying to set her up with somebody local in her hometown. But being a best friend means Xavier doesn't leave her in the lurch: his friend, an actor for hire, has time for the gig as her new boyfriend.
When April meets Theo for the first time the hit it off at first sight. They are two peas in a pod. They are so alike, a perfect match. Both of them have a goofy, sweet sense of humor. In preparation for the family reunnion they make up stories about how they met, episodes of their lives together and let me tell you, Lauren Blakely struck gold with this - the build-up of the sexual tension between the main characters is delectable, the slow burn of it grows into a fire and eventually into an explosion and I loved every second.
Everything we do is suddenly foreplay, even our role play.
April is a sassy, strong young woman who loves her independence and job. Theo a sweet man behind the bold, and a little cocky attitude. Of course he has secrets but they don't cause huge problems eventually. I loved Theo and April's strong connection which was pretty much happened at first sight but in this case it totally worked. Their cute banter was one of my favorite things.
The Real Deal is an adorable, sexy romantic comedy with all around lovable characters. It will make you feel good, laugh and sweep you away from reality and isn't that the best feeling ever? To fall into a book and not come out for hours? My first Lauren Blakely experience was a complete success.
It feels as though all the secrets I’ve been keeping are bubbling up, threatening to spill over, and I know I will tell her. I know I will share everything. I want her to know me. Want her to understand who I am. Because I want her to feel the same damn way I do. I want her to fall in love with me, too. The real me.

Such a sweet love story!

I just love this story! It’s a twist on a familiar theme where you rent a fake friend for an event. However, this one is a bit different because it’s the female renting the boyfriend for a long weekend at the parents. Why bring your own date? Because everyone is relentless about hooking April up with someone from home.
So April has a friend who knows a guy that rents himself out for events. From the time April and Theo meet you can just feel the connection. The wit, humor, and playful banter is so refreshing and made for a perfect story. They understand each other and Ms. Blakely brought in the intense attraction and getting to know you phase just perfectly. Heck, even the parents liked him!
However, Theo's not perfect and I love the fact that the author built in those reservations and imperfect parts of his life so that we could see that, even with imperfection, he still perfect for her.
This story is funny, sexy, and even a bit serious at times, but I love the wonderful feeling story gave me. Ms. Blakely crafted a story that is everything a rom-com should be and more. Amazing characters, smart and witty banter, and intense connections you won't forget. The Real Deal left me with a smile on my face and that’s the mark of a wonderful writer.

Wow! This was just super adorable! A little slow burn but fun and flirty and just right up my quirky alley. April is tired of being set up by her family and Theo is just the boyfriend for hire she needs! From the start, their playful role-playing was just sexy and all I could think was "lets act on this!" Their chemistry was at a low simmer most of the story and you could just feel it perking along. April's family was so close and the kind of well-meaning and supportive folks you wish everyone had. And they fall in love with Theo and I think Theo falls right back! The reunion and games are so addictive to read about that I wish I had a reunion just like this. I need to have a talk with my family. The Hamiltons put mine to shame and now I have all sorts of ideas on how to spark some life in our get-togethers. But I just fell in love with all of the characters and the how they met story was so cute. I want a Theo in my life. He really won my heart over in record time.

Due to some mega idiots and bad decisions, April swore off men.
But now she needs a 'date' to join her for her family's reunion thing. Five days with parents and aunts and siblings trying to set her up with the town's hardware store owner or the neighbor's grandson. Nope. Not again. April needs a pretend-date asap!
Enter Theo. He desperately needs money to pay back an old 'friend'.
He works as a bartender in his normal life, but in his I-need-money-asap-life he's a boyfriend for hire!
April was sent to him by his buddy Xavier - who was supposed to be her date, but he got a super job in London and had to cancel.

I LOVE LOVE Lauren's male POV romcoms, but hearing both their thoughts is great too.
And this one was really adorable.
Mega funny, sparky, sexy, cute. A bit mysterious/secretive.

Poor April - her family is hilarious - at least for us to read about! ☺☺☺
All through the story we're afraid that April won't be able to understand Theo and why he does what he does. What he used to do. Ugh. But of course this is a cute Rom Com, so we know that it'll all be ok in the end. But it takes us a while to get there! And we love every second reading about that journey!

As much as a few Blakely reads have given me joy (real talk : more lols than joy), I've also been plagued with a lot of 'yeah it was cute but whatevers' from her, too. Sometimes that's all you want, though, so I was happy enough with that when I needed it, even as I was shifting away from her books instead of clamouring for any new releases. But I risked a chance and gave THE REAL DEAL a shot because of the switch from smutty contemporary to something more women's fic'y. And honestly I think I liked this even less than the smutty ones.
Despite having a fake boyfriend trope, which is pretty much catnip for the Romancelandia crowd (this chick included), this book was just.. weird. The author is definitely channeling a more mature voice, no witty fourth wall breakage or snarky insight, but it also felt kind of awkward. True it's an ARC so some of the stumbling sentences and weird transitions could be corrected prior to the final but I have a feeling it's just how it was written. Combined with a relationship that moves faster than the speed of light, especially one hampered by the fake trope and compounded by even more lies -- which make it even less likely; some really bizarre choices on the heroine's behalf (I mean, really, you invited your fake boyfriend to your family reunion and three days in you invite his brother? you don't even know these people!) and some overthetop angsty and hard knock life backstory on the hero's side.. it's just a lot and I wasn't buying what this was selling. Not at all.

"It seemed crazy that we could fall in love so fast."
(camera pans, Office-style, to me. "it did seem crazy, yes it did.")
Honestly the only highlight was the heroine's profession (she was sorta a special effects make-up artist) and the idea of this crazy competitive family reunion full of games. But even the down-home, small town life of Wistful (yeah..) was made to be kinda irritating because of the wayI forgot her name already April's family kept trying to sell it to her, to match her up with eligible townies, in order to make her move back home. Oh, and that reminds me, ontop of refusing to stop matchmaking, to the point that a grown woman fakes a relationship to get her entire family to back off, you're telling me after how many years of April explaining her job, it takes a man to finally ram it home to her parents? Talk about man'splaining, my god.
Yeah, obviously this wasn't a winner for me. But I'm the odd duck out on this one so far. And for all the joy (see aforementioned comment RE joy = laughs) that I've had from Blakely with a few memorable reads over the last few years, I think I'm going to have to move on from this author. The meh does not outweigh the good and while we've had some good times.. there just haven't been enough to keep on reading.

The Real Deal was a lighthearted,sweet and refreshing story!The romance was beautiful and both characters were likeable.Theo make me swoon and melt over him.April is such a cute and smart heroine.
It was fast paced and I enjoyed the story a lot.The plot was so good and the characters were well developed.April and Theo were a perfect couple, they fit so good together.I couldn't imagine them with someone else.I had a smile in my face with these two, they were flirty and funny.
If you are looking for a heartwarming,funny and romantic story this is perfect!

Well crap. I finished this weeks ago and just forgot to review it. Which is doing all of us a disservice. I'll do my best based on my admittedly poor memory.
Theo and April have some great chemistry. I loved their banter and that they communicated so well even though there were barriers that should have gotten in their way given their disparate circumstances. I loved how open she was with him and how he was more open than he probably should have been and only became more so over time. I can't recall a dark moment and I remember waiting for one, so if its there, it was short and didn't traumatize me.
I do remember thinking in the end that it might have made more than four stars if it weren't for the stupid brother's ex-girlfriend blackmail thing going on. I mean, that part didn't hardly make sense to begin with and only provided weird drama. I did like that we eventually meet the brother and how the drama's teeth were pulled in a satisfying way. But I still disliked it being such a big part of Theo's motivation.
So there you have it. Four stars for reasons I only vaguely recall. Yay?
A note about Steamy: There were explicit sex scenes. They were about the middle of my steam tolerance. Yes, I recall thinking "about the middle of my steam tolerance" even though I can't remember anything more than that. Sigh.

4.5 I-needed-this-feel-good-romance Stars
What do you do when you don't want your family to keep meddling in your life? Well, hire a professional to pretend to be your boyfriend of course!
Theo (28) is like an actor. Need someone to pretend to be your fiancée? Or maybe a boyfriend that worships the ground you walk on? Or maybe a bad boy that causes lots of fights? He's there- whenever you need him💁🏻♀️. Theo does this as a side job of bartending in order to pay off his brother's debt, a brother who's trying to turn his life around. Plus, he has an arsenal of delicious and sexy accents (I listened to the audiobook- Zachary Webber and Erin Mallon did an amazing job. I heard it for free through Scribd).
April's going back home, to her family's reunion, and she doesn't wanna keep getting bombarded with people trying to hook her up with others, on top of being questioned about her profession (she paints people). So she asks her friend Xavier to play the part- except, he's traveling to a gig in London and can't do it for her. Luckily, he has a friend who's an expert at this sort of thing.
As soon as April and Theo meet, the banter and connection was on-point👏🏻. The banter alone and the way they volley their fake stories back and forth was simply *chef's kiss*🤌🏻. I, myself, kept questioning whether or not they had a past since their acting skills were so good😉! Theo has a knack for reading the room and understanding what's expected of him before he's even asked to do it. They start off with messages and those alone were fun. On the train ride to her parent's, they use the time to not only get their stories straight but also get to know one another on a deeper level (I now have a fantasy about trains 🔥lol). When he meets April's retired lawyer-mom, he's able to keep up with her line of questioning, impressing her immediately. Her dad's a little hard to win over (but I sure didn't mind the manual labor he had him do 😅lol), but, eventually, he's able to get him on his side.
The chemistry... okay, so this is on the slow burn side; duh, she hires him to pretend to be her man, but there's a lot of genuineness in their connection❤️. She's been burned before, so she's hesitant, but man, he assures her every step of the way. And don't get me started on his JP side😅- as soon as a man approaches April, he's there, sniffing her, touching her, grabbing her... I loved those scenes. Their first intense kiss is at about 50% 🔥with some nice treats along the 70s% and then smexxxy tine at 78%. The treehouse and boat scenes will live rent-free in my head for a while🥵.
There are some truths that need to be revealed- I saw what the issue was going to be coming, especially when Theo hadn't been as forthcoming as April was, but we get their HEA and a cute epilogue- this epilogue was so swoooony🥰! Really brought their story full circle- GAH! 😍loved it.
