12 books1 followerRobert Dukelow worked in orchards in rural California starting at age six. He was a voracious reader and avid writer from childhood. He attended Chico State College on a California Merit Scholarship and went to graduate school at Chico State. He completed many classified training courses taught by U.S. and German intelligence agencies. He worked for thirty-three years as a U.S. Army multi-disciplined counterintelligence officer. Most of that time, he was working with NATO partners, but he also worked with the NSA, CIA, and FBI. He retired from the Pentagon in 2005. He resided over 26 years in Germany, two plus years in Hungary, plus shorter stays in The Netherlands and Afghanistan. He is native fluent in English and German. He studied many other languages. His avocations include writing, gardening, raising gamefowl, mountain hiking, cycling, photography, and teaching.

This is the first book in a fictionalized autobiography based on the experiences of soldiers both in Vietnam and Germany. It begins in California, where the writer was born and raised, takes him to Vietnam, and finally tells of some counterintelligence work that he did in Germany. (the writer was, in fact, in counterintelligence, a life that is chronicled in greater detail in the 2nd and 3rd books in the series)
Fascinating information, told in a series of steady, declarative sentences reminiscent of the reports he wrote over his 35+ year career. Fascinating people, fascinating situations, fascinating sequences of events that wouldn't be known to those of us who are living the life virtually rather than for real.
Worth a read by anyone interested in how war looks and feels on the ground, and how the structure of the military serves to both obfuscate and ameliorate complex situations.
