Witch's Bite #2

Price of Magic

Rate this book
All magic has a price, and I’m paying it.

I was able to rescue my friend and save the vampire clan I work for, but my actions have attracted the kind of attention I’ve tried my whole life to avoid.

A dangerous vampire shows up at my house uninvited, and with an offer I can’t refuse. He has information on my mother, someone I’ve long believed to be dead. I find myself getting drawn further and further into his games that risk all my secrets.

When my future goes up in flames, literally, that’s only the beginning. All the ghosts from my past are here to haunt me. I’m learning that I can’t run from everything, no matter how hard I try.

Price of Magic is the second book in the Witch’s Bite urban fantasy series. It features an ass kicking, potion slinging heroine in a fast paced, dangerous tale full of magic and murder. Perfect for fans of McKenzie Hunter, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Ella Summers, and Linsey Hall.

I liked it a little less than book one. Olivia loose some cool factor, and so does the author with the plunge in NA. I really could have done without the vamp attraction, both because it's such a overused cliché and because it does make us look like idiots. Honestly I find it irritating. A lot. Like chalk on a blackboard.

I also wish her struggling more at the end or refusing his blackmailing. They had no problems at the end to sell you, and after all, if he kills everyone what will he get? :P

Hopefully book 3 will be out soon.

I liked it, buuuuuuut...

...the FMC is pretty spineless. Like, I don't understand why she does whatever Riley says from the moment he shows up. He has no authority over her - she's not a vampire, and furthermore, the witch council and vampire council don't even like each other, so the fact that he's on the vampire council is whatever. He's not the boss of her. He comes in and acts like he is her sovereign ruler or something, and she doesn't offer even token disagreement. She follows him like a spineless puppy as he investigates, and is used by him as needed.

It was not a good look. And it made me not think very much of her at all.

It's also made me drag my feet about the next book. It's on my kindle, but everytime I finish a book and look at my kindle to decide what next, my eyes skim over that one and I go UGH and look onward. I'm just not impressed with her, and I suspect Riley is going to be the love interest (she had a fair bit of "he's a dick, sure, but he's sooooo hot" going on... one of the worst tropes ever), which is irritating.

YMMV, but ... meh.

The world and the characters the author created once again gripped me in this installment. The writing was fast-paced and my adrenaline levels were upped.

The one thing that bothered me was Olivia’s behavior. She was too hotheaded and seemed completely defenseless when she had chemistry/was in lust with someone. She knew she couldn’t trust Reilly and still she let him get close.

It’s a pet peeve of mine when a character does this, and it seems to be happening more and more lately. As if women are incapable of finding someone attractive and yet have no desire to get together with that someone b/c of reasons.

This was just as good as the first book.
These books are quick, fun and with lots of action - and with an amazing heroine.

Can't wait to read the next book!

Kicking and Sparking

KU 4.5 stars
This is another great Kindle Unlimited find with a tenacious heroine, a variety of vampires and a throw down of wicked witches. This new series does a stellar job of igniting a dose of freshness into some oft used stereotypes. Although there are a number of typos, I didn't find them overbearing enough to detract from both the quality and impact of the story.

A quick and fun read with plenty of tension and good worldbuilding. It could have done with an editor to catch the homonyms and such, but it wasn't bad enough to really take from the story. I'll grab book 3 when it's available. This book contained a link that read as though it was supposed to go to book 3, but there's no sign of that being published yet.

Really 3.5, almost gave it a 4, but I really wasn't a fan of the ending and where some of the character relationships are going. I might try to finish the series at some point but I can't be sure rn

While the first book in this series was a little scattered - with information being parceled out in really weird ways - this book seems to find its footing and it seems to flow much better.

Riley, who is a VERY strong vampire, is introduced and immediately we realize that there is more going on than it appears. Olivia, quite justifiably, has many, many questions on just what the heck is going on as her life begins to spiral out of control. She finally begins to get some EXTREMELY valuable information about her mother, but more importantly, about the circumstances of her birth.

Riley seems to be in the middle of everything, yet Olivia does NOT trust him *smart girl*. As her life is blowing up around her and her friends are being threatened, she agrees to go with Riley on the quest to find a certain person that created the mayhem and also btw, tried to kill her.

I like Olivia. She has a core of strength and she tends to be extremely loyal to her friends - even though that seems to be the thing that gets her in trouble. Every. Single. Time.

Things are getting interesting. Onward to book 3.....

Running might be the only answer

She's trying to get to grips with the magic she stole but is fearful of the representative that is coming to interview her and the others. He's handsome, a cold hearted vampire that will do everything to further the vampire's cause and in particular his sire's standing. Attacks, kidnapping and threats are all aimed at her. Will her heritage come to light? If it does what will it mean for her? Betrayals and heartache stand in her way and an attempt at escaping is thwarted because she went back for her cat. Can she save the others even if her life ends here? A great plot that let's you see into her beginnings and what happened to her mother. Plus the fact that her loyalty to others is her undoing.

I was pretty good with this right until near the end. I was intrigued by the mystery of what the leading lady was With the direction at the end, I probably won't read the next.

From a structure point of view, the first two books are short and the second literally jumps in at the end of the first. These probably would have been one book in the days of traditional publishing. but they were free on Kindle Unlimited.

Olivia learns more, is it too much?

Olivia is falling down the rabbit hole, finding out things about friends and family that are hard to believe. Reilly, the Vampire Council representative shows up and has an interest in her that Olivia doesn't feel comfortable with. He also offers information on her mother, if she does what he wants. But another group joins the hunt, the JHAPI a government law enforcement group with paranormal and human paired teams. And the hunted isn't what the originally thought. They want Olivia, and everybody else wants to know why.

3 stars is generous. Good characters, good plot and storyline - totally ruined by poor pacing and a heroine who acts like she was a character on "Charmed" (tv show) interspersed with random spurts of behaving like Gal Gadot in a superhero movie.
(Sorry if that description made no sense, there were a lot of scenes that made less sense).

Fantasy requires the willing suspension of belief.. Or a lot of comedy. The heroine was not Gal Gadot, and even Miss Piggy would be more believable in these fight scenes.

The sad thing is, all the ingredients were there to make this a great book.

This book was too short to really get into Olivia's personality as much as I'd have liked. Especially since, at this point, I'm not sure I really like her. And I know I don't like Reilly. Olivia is too bitter, and hotheaded, although I do feel like she's trying to do the right thing. In resisting taking the magic, she feels a bit like a drug addict, or an alcoholic trying to stay clean. Which I suppose is the case, and something she's got experience in. Reilly however just seems like an over controlling ass. Hopefully we'll see more to recommend them both in the next books.

I didn't like this one quite as much as the first but I still enjoyed it. There were some repetitive moments, scenes that were too similar to each other and some cliche parts but I really like the main character. Some of the other characters that I'd loved in the first one didn't feel quite the same in this one, it was really subtle, which might have been intentional for reasons I won't say, but I didnt like it and it made me sad. It wasn't bad just not exactly what I wanted. But I'll read the next one because I'm curious about where it's going.

A fast paced urban paranormal read

Stephanie Foxes' Witch's Bite series continues at lightening speed. There is magic, secret skills and plenty of action as the mystery of Olivia's mother comes to a conclusion and new enemies surface with plans to use her and her strange magic. This book does have a serious cliffhanger that will just whet your appetite for more. Editing was a bit more spotty this time around.

It’s getting better...

As the storyline in this series progresses, it just gets better!
Olivia is trying to recover from the events of the last book, while figuring out what happened to the one who tried to kill her.
In the meantime, she has to deal with a vampire from the ruling council, friends behaving oddly, and a blast from the past.
By the end of the book, Olivia knows a lot more about herself, and is facing trials she never knew were coming.

A good series if you like vampire stories. Unfortunately I don’t. However I did like the heroine. Olivia is smart, gutsy and loyal. I couldn’t make a connection with her though because of her attraction to the vampire. Foxe has built a complex society which resonates as true to itself.
I bought the box set and I did read all of them. FYI every book but the last one ends in a cliffhanger, though so don’t plan on reading any of them either out of order or as a stand-alone.

Price of Magic: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Witch's Bite Series Book 2)

Price of Magic: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Witch's Bite Series Book 2) I absolutely loved the book 😍💗 Olivia still speaks her mind, dam the consequences😯😂😅 but she is having a hard time, someone from her past comes to investigate and it’s seriously affecting her and I cried for her for all she has been through…. There so many more unexpected plot twists and now I'm really excited to read the 3rd book 📖 … I definitely love and recommend the book 📕 / series 📚…..

Inhaling this series - there is no other way to put it. Loving Olivia and her action-filled life. Her search for answers uncovers more than she bargained for. Her need to protect and do what is right lands her in more hot water. People are not who (or what) they seem. All of this and a lot more is rolled into this well-written book. Can’t wait to continue the journey in book 3.

Well written, unique take on supernatural elements

Character development is good, story elements woven with great flow and plot twists avoid cliches. The lack of an obvious romantic interest is refreshing for a supernatural novel; the heroine develops and discovers things about herself without interference of other characters in a contrived way.

Lots of revelations

Many questions are answered. Poor Olivia doesn't seem to have anyone unwilling to ask for too much from her or willing to give anything of themselves. Dangling hope that she can find her mom is cruel. This was still a great adventure. Olivia is more dragged from adventure to adventure than racing towards it tho.

While I enjoyed this book I felt it was a lead in to the third book. This book introduces, Reilly, a vampire from the vampire council who threatens to kill all of her friends if she does not help him. They fight constantly because she wants to do things her way. Of course, this frustrates Reilly no end. She ends up doing things her way and always defeats the bad guys.

One Surprise After Another

Reading a Stephanie Foxe story is like riding a roller coaster designed by an AI. There is no place to catch your breath and you hang on desperately waiting for it all to make sense. If it wasn't so entertaining I might have been able to stop reading and get on with my life before I consumed two books.

You have been warned.

This book was fuller and richer than the first, but in terms of actual plot, this one was a little less exciting. However, I did manage to actually finish the book and enjoy it, which warrents 4 stars these days because it takes about 10 unfinished books before I get to one worth finishing. I really hate Reilly and cannot read his name without hearing the O'Reilly Autoparts jingle in my head.

Another great story

Olivia is really a great character that I enjoy reading. She finally gets answers about her last but it doesn't make her life any easier. I loved the whole book and look forward to the next.
