A ecologia social sustenta a idéia básica de que os problemas ecológicos estão profundamente relacionados aos problemas sociais, particularmente no domínio dos sistemas políticos e sociais autoritários e hierarquizados. A ecologia social sugere que não é possível fazer frente a tais problemas apenas por ações individuais como o "consumismo ético", mas sim através de atividades coletivas fundamentadas em ideais democráticos e libertários radicais. A complexidade das relações entre os seres humanos e a natureza é enfatizada pela ecologia social, juntamente com a importância de se estabelecer estruturas sociais que levem em conta tais relações. Se a natureza é fonte de liberdade, participação, solidariedade e apoio mútuo, então as estruturas sociais que organizam as sociedades humanas também podem ser – eis a mensagem básica da ecologia social.

A pioneer in the ecology movement, Bookchin was the founder of the social ecology movement within anarchist, libertarian socialist and ecological thought. He was the author of two dozen books on politics, philosophy, history, and urban affairs as well as ecology. In the late 1990s he became disenchanted with the strategy of political Anarchism and founded his own libertarian socialist ideology called Communalism.
Bookchin was an anti-capitalist and vocal advocate of the decentralisation of society along ecological and democratic lines. His writings on libertarian municipalism, a theory of face-to-face, assembly democracy, had an influence on the Green movement and anti-capitalist direct action groups such as Reclaim the Streets.
