Everything I hate about this genre
The world building is the strongest part and that is slapdash. Is Roxburge located in the northern part of New York? In the Midwest around Chicago? We don't know I only went with those places because of the organized crime.
The characters are simplistic, there are too many of them, and the motivations are scribbles on a plotting board.
The plot is insta-love enemies to lovers suspense. Those are three things that can be done well but combined they are a mess. I'm not saying someone somewhere won't get this idea right eventually. But it hasn't been done yet.
A good book recipe is like a good cake recipe, the ingredients have to work together to make a cohesive whole.
That's why a simple plot structure works best. It's not boring if you add unexpected elements and take time to really understand why things work together.
The writing needs work the love scenes are terrible. They sound like they were written by a man or by someone with a horrible bedroom play time. I get that Little may have wanted to be more realistic but, a partner that brings you to completion multiple times and loves foreplay isn't unrealistic. It's the goal not a unicorn--fantasy creature made up in fairy tales. And over all more research is needed. How does someone build an empire, act when they are abusive, or have dementia? Not the Hollywood version the real one. King had to innovate. Did he create the first mega hardware store or did he create a
franchise? Both actual models that were used successfully. And an abusive relationship takes years to build. In the first three months he'd have shown her a dark side. He'd have created a scene to embarrass the crap out of her or made her physically uncomfortable. He'd have grabbed her hard enough to leave bruises and held her even after she said stop, stomped on her foot, or pinched and twisted skin until it bruised all in a fit of rage. And he'd have justified it as her making him crazy. He'd have been sweet before and after. But at three months they are just starting to train you to watch out for their temper. They have already started to undermine your physical and mental state. Commenting on your clothing, intelligence, choices, and maybe even gaslighting you to make you question your own mind. An abuser doesn't just flip a switch one day, no he's always an abuser and he keep testing your boundaries until he knows that he can hit you and you won't leave. And as for dementia it's a horrible disease it isn't just the old lady can't remember. People react when they are frightened or caught in a memory. They can get aggressive and abusive. It's not a dynamic explored enough.
Pacing is alright at least it's over quickly. But since there are so many elements there isn't a slow down until the end which is really the scene from the next book in the series. Good idea chucking that one in here because it's a clunker. Adam and Em have the chemistry of milk and bread. There isn't any chemistry they just combine into a bland soggy mush.
Overall, it's just a skip. Ms. Little go back to basics, cut the fat and beef up the rest. And yes I wrote this review while hungry.
