The purpose of this illustrated Book of Hours is to provide Catholics with a comprehensive prayer book which includes both the traditional Medieval common content of the Book of Hours, and the great variety of traditional Catholic devotions to the present, representing Catholic prayer life of over a 1000 years.
This publication is in two parts: Part One - The Book of Hours, presented in a manner as close as possible to the colorfully-illustrated Medieval Book of Hours; and Part Two - a Treasury of Catholic Devotions containing a selection of popular traditional devotions and prayers.
The Book of Hours includes:
- a 1962 Calendar of Feast Days;
- a Calendar of Movable feasts to 2040 A.D.;
- the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Gregorian notation of its antiphons, hymns, and anthems;
- the Hours of the Passion, Holy Spirit, and the Immaculate Conception;
- the Penitential Psalms and the Office of the Dead;
- the Infancy Gospels and popular Medieval prayers to Our Lady.
The Treasury of Catholic Devotions includes as well as the typical variety of daily prayers for most occasions:
- the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross, preparation for Confession, Mass, Communion and Benediction;
- especial devotions to the Holy Sacrament, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to the Most Holy Name of Jesus, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and to St Joseph; all together with a variety of Novenas and Chaplets.
The Book of Hours contains in large part the existing public, official, and liturgical prayers of the Catholic Church: the Officium parvum Beatae Mariae Virginis - the Little of Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and the Office of the Dead; both of which are in the officially-sanctioned Roman Breviary of 1962. In this publication they are still presented in Latin (beside the English translation) because Latin is still the official language of the Catholic Church.
The prayers in the Treasury are in English.
Illustrated Medieval initial letters, decorative motifs, and pictures have been used as the main style throughout this publication, but illustrations from other periods have been used where appropriate.
