Kelley is a member of an online weight loss group I am in. Her success has amazed me, and I always notice how sweet she is. As soon as she told us she had a book, I had to read it.
Kelley began her journey at 391 pounds. Through bariatric surgery, hard work, dedication, support from her family, and her faith in God, she lost an astonishing 243 pounds. Kelley tells us all that we have ever needed to know about her experience. We learn how rude and unkind people were to her, even doctors, coworkers, bosses, and friends. My heart broke for this sweet soul who was treated so poorly simply because of her weight and no other reason. We also learned how loving and supportive her inner circle was to her. Her son, her parents, her best friend, her bariatric surgeon and his assistant, Kim, her plastic surgeon, and her son's father. Kelley is so sweet that she shows us her kind soul when describing to us how others have shown her love and support. She also shines the love of Christ when forgiving those who have hurt her. I don't know that I could have been so nice about others being so hateful, regardless of why they were being so ugly.
And can I just say how darling her son Alec is? The love he has and always did have for his mom is so heart warming. His servant's heart is definitely a reflection of his parents. Even though the relationship didn't work out, Alec saw his dad leave his girlfriend's home during the week to come take care of his mom after surgery. When his dad wasn't there, Alec's grandmother was. This child was surrounded by so much love and support that it seeped into his soul. I can't imagine how proud she is of the man he is.
Kelley also shares with us every aspect of her surgeries. For anyone who says that surgery is the easy way out, they NEED to read this book. I never knew all that was involved from her every day life of not being able to do simple tasks like walking or grocery shopping, to making a difficult and scary decision to have the surgery, almost dying afterwards, the pain, the recovery, the vomiting for 10 months, the bathroom accidents, not being able to clean herself in the bathroom, the problems with extra skin, the surgeries to remove 11 pounds of skin, the drains, the months and months of pain, not being able to handle pain meds, not being able to sleep in bed, not being able to stand up straight - I could go on but Kelley describes it much better.
Kelley's unwavering faith in God is such a testimony and something we should all strive to model. The way she tells us how obstacles were removed, paths were cleared, doors were opened for her and some that were shut, made my heart happy. And the Disney experience was chilling! (In a good way!)
Even if you don't "know" Kelley, if you've ever wondered about any of these things, read her book. There are so many other issues she tackled that I know I'm forgetting. But I was left with the feeling that I would be honored to have someone like her as my friend, whether she is 391 pounds, 148 pounds, or any number in between.
