Rafe Blackstone may play the sexiest werewolf superhero to ever melt women's . . . hearts . . . on the big screen, but Lily Hollander has already been bitten by an actor, and once was enough. So when Australia's favorite son walks into Sinful Desires, Lily’s lingerie store, she's not impressed. Especially when Rafe displays his overprotective streak in defense of his brother--and aims it at Lily. Or, rather, at her identical twin.
Lily may seem like the softer side of the twinship, but nobody messes with her sister. Rafe can take his assumptions, mistaken identity and otherwise, right out her door again. Starting now.
Are you allowed to hate your future almost-brother-in-law, if you do it really, really quietly?
Rosalind James writes contemporary romance and romantic suspense published both by Montlake Romance and independently. Her stories are set in New Zealand, Idaho, California, New York . . . really, anyplace that seems cool. (Research trips, especially those involving lots of rugby, are a bonus.) Her books are available in ebook, paperback, and audio formats. Rosalind is a former marketing executive who spent several years in Australia and New Zealand, where she fell in love with the people, the landscape, and the culture of both countries. She attributes her rapid success to the fact that "Lots of people would like to escape to New Zealand! I know I did!"
I'm feeling a little lazy today, so this'll be a short review. I've read many books by this author and have liked some better than others. Her writing style is a little verbose, repetitive, and purple, but I don't usually mind it as long as the plot and MCs are compelling. Unfortunately, in the case of this book, the sentiment "it's not you; it's me" comes to mind. There were a lot of things going on in this story and maybe my summer brain didn't want to process it all. I also didn't necessarily dislike either MC, but I didn't find myself liking them all that much either. Perhaps it's because there was only so much inner monologue that I could handle. The MCs seriously reflected on every.single.thing. If this had been my first Rosalind James book, I probably would've given it three stars, but as I've read into the teens of her books, I can't rate it any higher than 2.5 stars.
The H also came across as a bit of a manho. And the way he goes from wanting a ONS with the h, whom he didn't recognize as his future sister-in-law's twin, to being offended that she only wanted a fling with him made no sense. I liked Chuck, the dog, the best. He was adorable and had no inner monologue to speak of. :)
4.5 Star Review of Tempting As SIn (Sinful,Montana #2) by Rosalind James
Another great addition to the Sinful, Montana series. I really enjoy Rosalind James style of writing; her characters are always believable and the way she describes the surroundings, often makes me feel as though I am seeing the places she talks about in my mind.
Both Rafe Blackstone and Lily Hollander are strong characters in their own right. Lily is purportedly the quieter, softer twin, but she is ferocious when it comes to protecting her identical twin Paige.
When a case of mistaken identity brings Rafe and Lily into a confrontation, sparks fly. Once the confusion is unravelled, Rafe and Lily embark on an adventure, all the while trying to protect themselves from getting hurt. Both have been badly burnt in the past by partners that did a number on them and neither want to be that vulnerable again.
Rafe is swoon worthy and made my heart jump on occasion. I loved that he was prepared to let Lily set the pace for the relationship that they building.
This was a romantic, sweet, humorous story which had great secondary characters and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
I'd say that this is one of my new favorites by this author. Loved the Aussie leading man Rafe, after his initial misstep he is a sign worthy too perfect leading man. His heroine was great too, fragile seeming but growing into her strength. There is a nice little touch back for her twin and his brother who were the stars of the previous book.
It is tempting as sin here to spew all the reasons why I felt this story line let me down by not living up to its potential. But, not to worry, folks, I'm not going to waste your time nor mine. Just know the great back and forth banter and soul connecting chemistry in the first book seemed to be missing here. Or at the very least, didn't run as deep. Yes, even the smex appeal just wasn't the same either. Heck, even a purpose or promise of an actual plot was practically invisible to my Kindle weary eyes most of the time.
By 80 percent, I tapped out, because, really, I was skimming over that much of it. Just when I was given a hint of something substantial might take over, it seemed to quickly get sidetracked/watered down with too much meandering writing (i.e. sing songish numerous subcharacter little orphan Annie kid musings/coming & goings, non-revelant subcharacters, details of horseback riding lessons, stray dog pet care/dog sitting, lengthy lingerie shop talk, etc.). And least I forget to mention .. If I read the words "I reckon" one time time, I think my head is going to explode.
Despite the numerous, lengthy descriptions of Lily, the heroine (especially how she dressed or wore her hair), I just only got that she was sweet, real pretty, divorced, owned a lingerie store, and had some goats, chickens, and a small garden. Her fragility was meant to endear me, but I found her too sappy. Her identical twin sister in book 1 obviously inherited all the cool factor genes. The big reveal of what a sleaze ball her ex-hubby was felt unnecessarily OTT due to the ramifications to this heroine's health.
Superficial attraction and lust was what I felt between the main couple more than anything. Yeah, we are told he's falling for her... vice versa. But whatever. That's what this summed up to be for me. A whatever romantic read where I'm still happy they get a HEA, but it just wasn't consistently scripted overly engaging.
Romance Safety Gang:
(I voluntarily read and reviewed a Kindle Unlimited version of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not rewarded or compensated in any form for this review. There is no relationship between this reviewer and the author, publisher, or PR firm.)
Well, Rosalind James has done it again and written a book that draws the reader into a fictional world so enticingly that I end up wishing I could go visit the locale. This time the story is taking place in Sinful, Montana where the heroine Lily Hollander has retreated after a bad marriage to build a life on her own and find her independence. Lily is the identical twin of Paige, the heroine of the first book in this series. They might look exactly alike, but they are totally different.
While visiting Paige, Lily runs into Rafe Blackstone, Paige’s boyfriend’s brother. They don’t know each other so they have a lovely evening together that gives pickups in a bar a very good name. Then when Rafe meets her the next day, he thinks she’s her sister and was two-timing his brother. She’s furious at the accusation and that he used a fake identity with her, not saying who he was - a world-famous actor from playing a werewolf in action flicks. Thus ends Act One of their drama.
For Act Two - Lily has returned to Montana and Rafe decides to go there to study how to be a cowboy for his next role. Of course, they meet up and their physical attraction resumes. James is an expert on the slow-burn of sexual attraction between two characters and this is no exception. It helps that Lily owns a lingerie shop so she can tease Rafe by showing him some of her sexy stock.
Rafe is just the nicest guy. He is deeply attracted to Lily, but he’s willing to let her set the pace. Lily befriends a poor little girl, Bailey, and the mutt that Bailey had adopted. We can really see what a great guy Rafe is by how he instinctively knows how to act with the frightened girl. Those are some of the most endearing scenes. Both Bailey and Chuck, the mutt, will win your hearts.
Both Rafe and Lily are recovering from bad relationships with the most despicable exes who, both being movie stars, lied to the press to make themselves look good. Rafe and Lily seem to have accepted the way they were demonized in the media without any effort to fight back with an interview setting out what really happened. When we find out more about Lily’s ex-husband, it’s a bit exasperating that she let him get away with how he treated her and didn’t do anything to retaliate the slightest bit. She has a sister who is a police detective; couldn’t Paige have given her a bit of advice about what to do? I guess Lily is just an example of how a woman can adopt her tormentor’s view as her own self-image. We know that the wicked ex will eventually get his comeuppance, but I would have enjoyed wallowing a bit more in his downfall. The same for Rafe’s dishonest ex.
But that’s a small quibble. Overall, I couldn’t put the book down and ended up putting off a lot of other things on my to-do list so I could keep reading the book. That’s always the way it is with Rosalind James’ novels. If you haven’t read her before, I heartily recommend that you jump in with one of her series. Just be sure that you don’t have terribly important things to get done before you start reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from the author; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
Oh my! Such a lovely story. Rafe Blackstone is a well known actor, famous for playing a werewolf known as The Beast. He has just had an acrimonious split from his fiancé, an actress, and is between films. He decides to visit his brother Jace in San Francisco, because he is worried about him. Jace was in the military, and came home with PTSD, and the family were scared for him. He is now a successful author, but had a stressful and bitter divorce six months before this story begins. Now Jace is planning to marry Paige Hollander, and Rafe is very worried that he is doing this on the rebound at best, and at the worst Paige is a gold-digger. He arrives in San Francisco late because his rental car breaks down, so he books into a hotel for the night. The Concierge suggests a good bar to go to, and as soon as he gets there a woman catches his eye. After a while he rescues her from another man trying to be over-friendly. They have a drink together, get chatting, and agree to go to a Karaoke bar together. Both of them have used aliases, for various reasons. They have a wonderful evening together, and Rafe arranges transport to get the woman home, she wouldn't give him her phone number, but took his.
The next day he turns up at his brother's house boat, to find that same woman trying to get in. He assumes she is Paige, and from the previous evening with her decides she can only be after Jace's money, and is really quite rude to her. Then Jace and Paige arrive from their morning run, and he discovers his error, the woman he had spent the evening with was Lily, Paige's identical twin. Instant frost! Lily is not prepared to forgive and forget. They manage to be civil to each other when they all go to Australia to meet the rest of Jace's family, but that is it!
Lily returns to her life in Sinful, Montana; looking after her goats, chickens, her garden and her lingerie shop, and her life returns to normal. The heat turns up for Rafe, his ex-fiancé puts a video out on the internet to get back at him, and which gives a very wrong impression of him. He needs to hide away until the storm blows over. The one place he expects to be able to do that is Jace's cabin, close to Lily's cottage in Sinful. She hears he is coming, but thinks they will be able to avoid contact. And then ... she meets an eight year old child called Bailey, who is trying to look after a stray mutt of a dog called Chuck ... and this turns out to be a total life changer for both Lily and Rafe.
There is a lot of story in this book, some of it very funny, some of it absolutely heartbreaking, some of it unexpectedly exciting in an 'Oh My Goodness' type of way. Rosalind is very good at ratcheting up the tension, and the emotion. Bailey is a wonderful character, and is so true to life. Secrets come out along the way, a few tissues might be required to stop the tears! A really satisfying ending, with a delightful twist. Rosalind's stories get better and better! Well worth reading, worth more than five stars!
This book was even better than the first one, Guilty as Sin. I enjoyed that one a lot; it was very exciting and had great characters plus an excellent twin-switch plot. But while I was reading, I was getting even more interested in Rafe and Lily. I wanted more of their story, and it was terrific. Those two have serious chemistry from the first moment. It is off the charts. Their first date was amazing, especially for two people who have big trust issues. Rafe demonstrates his respectfulness and understanding of Lily early on. When the misunderstanding hits, Lily stands up to Rafe in a way that she didn't even know she could do. That is probably my favorite part of the book: Rafe and Lily bring out the best in each other. The misunderstanding doesn't last very long, and they try to be adults about it. (I hate drawn out misunderstandings that could be resolved in two minutes if people talked. That is not what happens here, I promise.) The actual problem is that they have each revealed more of themselves to each other than they meant to, and they each have to decide if they will hide or try for more. It is a very compelling story that encompasses themes like genuineness, courage, the true nature of love, and consent in several forms. In addition, we get some great secondary characters. I just wanted to bundle Bailey and Chuck up and bring them to my house. I liked that we got Bailey's point of view in several chapters. Martin adds a lot of fun to the plot, and so does Jo. And we get to meet Willow and get some serious hints dropped about Brett's backstory. Do I hear book number 3? Then there is the humor. For all the big themes discussed in this book, I laughed an awful lot. Rafe has the most wonderful self-effacing sense of humor. His reports on his horseback riding lessons are pure gold, and I highlighted all of them. Since he isn't afraid to laugh at himself, the other characters aren't afraid, either. There are lots of funny exchanges between Lily and Rafe. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. My honest opinion is that it has all the best facets of Rosalind James's books: great writing, lots of fun, excellent characters with true chemistry, and a few serious things to think about, too. It was very romantic and definite keeper.
Tempting as Sin is a fun and enjoyable romance. This book is the second in the Sinful, Montana series and it is just as good as the first.
I really liked the character of Lily, our heroine. I liked that even though she had been a bit on the wimpy side in the past, she was pushing herself to be braver and stronger. Lily was really focused on building a happy successful life, and I liked that she wanted to do so on her own terms.
I liked Rafe our hero as well. He annoyed me a little bit in the beginning but he really showed himself to be a stand up solid guy, even if he did work in Hollywood.
The relationship between Rafe and Lily was fun to watch develop and there was no doubt that they belonged together and would make each other happy.
One of my favorite parts of the book were the secondary characters and the farm and animals. I actually enjoyed the farm and animals so much they almost overshadowed the secondary characters at some points!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sweet contemporary romance.
Tempting as Sin is book two in Rosalind James' Sinful Montana series. IMO it a can easily be read as a stand alone without any difficulty, but if you are anything like me I like to read series in order.
The main characters are Lily Hollander and Rafe Blackstone who happen to be, respectively, the twin sister and younger brother of the main characters of the first book in the series: Guilty as Sin. Lily is very different from her twin Paige, she was always the quiet twin. More introverted, eager to please, not wanting to make waves, but after an ugly divorce she is trying to make her own way in life, and working hard to become a strong independent woman.
Rafe Blackstone is a rising Hollywood star. At the beginning of the story he is determined to stop his brother from making what he thinks is a terrible mistake by getting serious about Lily's sister Paige. Then a meeting in a bar leads to a case of mistaken identity the next day, and he, not having a clue about the whole identical twin thing, is convinced that Lily is Paige and that she is using his brother. This makes for a not so brilliant start for our H/h. LOL!
The story follows them back to Sinful, Montana, where Lily lives and owns a Lingerie store, and Rafe comes to Jace's cabin trying to stay incognito while to researching for his next role of a western small town sheriff. There are plenty of sparks, conflict and UST before our two heroes come together. Toss in an eight year old girl who Lily befriends, a big goofy dog, Rafe's meticulously efficient assistant and other cast of local characters and it all makes for a heart melting story. I've said it before, I believe one of the author's strong points is the amazing cast of supporting characters she creates.
I would recommend this book to romance lovers everywhere: it has humor, angst, fluff, suspense, ust, heat and happy endings. I hope to see more stories set in Sinful, Montana.
Ms. James is one of those authors that always manages surpass my expectations. I went into Tempting as Sin expecting to be entertained and expecting to enjoy the book, but it's the second book in the series. We've seen glimpses of the main characters before, so I was honestly expecting it to be a little "less" than Guilty as Sin (Sinful, Montana #1) Expecting that "less" was a BIG mistake on my part. While Tempting is a follow up/companion to Guilty, the story and characters are independent and carry their own weight in a well written, heartwarming story. We do see some of Paige and Jace (as you would expect since their siblings are the main characters here), but this is very much Lily and Rafe's story. From mistaken identity, to misunderstandings, shared dogs, vengeful exes, and little girls needing love Lily and Rafe's adventures left me feeling hopeful that things turn out they way they are supposed to and that the end is the best thing for everyone. Ms. James has mastered the slow burn and capturing the emotional essence of a relationship. She is a versatile author whose work I genuinely look forward too. No matter where she takes us next, I'll definitely be reading along.
Tempting as Sin is book 2 in the Sinful, Montana Series and this one is all about trust and misunderstandings, Rafe is an Australian actor who needs to learn it’s ok to trust and not every woman is going to let you down and treat you wrong and Lily needs to learn that not all actors are bad people some are capable of love and then we have Bailey the sweet little girl who has been mistreated, once you add Chuck the dog that trusts and loves everyone into the mix you get a story that will captivate you. This book is a sweet romantic read yes it has some laugh out loud moments but it also is touched with some sadness, it has the perfect mix of love and angst and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to more from Rosalind James and this series.
I love Rosalind James' style of writing. Lily and Rafe's story was truly a journey. From where they started to the final pages, you run the gamut of emotions.
A sweet, sexy, funny, romantic love story. There was also some sadness, anger, fear, and a good dose of happiness. Rafe and Lily liked and respected each other, and that made the love and sexiness so much better. It was also great that they were willing to take on Bailey and Chuck before they knew where they stood with each other.
I really enjoyed the scene with Antonio. It seemed to me that both Rafe and Lily were generous, gentle spirits with strong cores. They would bend, but not break. I loved their conversations, and I was very happy to see that last chapter that gives you a sneak peak into what happens a little further down the road.
I enjoyed returning to Sinful, Montana and getting to know Lily Hollander better. Rafe Blackstone is an alpha male with more than good looks as we begin to see in this second book. A lovely romance with very likable characters. Lily's heart is so big but she is one strong woman who is learning more about herself in this book. Enjoyable romance.
Preconceived ideas bring misunderstandings and distrust in others. Learning to give up those ideas and trust again is the backbone of this book. Rafe, a popular Australian actor, needs to trust in himself and in relationships again after his fiance did him wrong. Lily, needs to trust a man who is an "actor " after her "actor " husband turned on her. Bailey, the sweet little mistreated neighbor girl, needs to trust that someone will love her for who she is and never leave her. Chuck the dog trusts and loves everyone and brings these three together. This book is filled with tender moments, a lot of fun filled minutes, and don't forget the sexy bits! Rosalind as usual writes a sweet believable story filled with compassion, human kindness, great dialogue and character interaction. Do yourself a favor, grab a cup of tea, find a comfy chair and curl up with this awesome book.
I loved this book! It's the second book in the Sinful, Montana series. I love how Lily and Rafe meet and how they feel about each other. It's as good as how Lily's sister Paige met Rafe's brother Jace! I could totally picture myself in Montana in the mountains. I don't want to spoil the story but watching the two of them get together was beautiful. I would like to read another book in this series because Rosalind has introduced other characters that I really want to know more about. I have read all of Rosalind's books and have loved each and every one. I definitely think you should read this book and the one before it.
I really enjoyed the two books that encompass this little series. Nice romances, great writing and terrific characters. Looks like I will be checking out more books by Rosalind James!
Book 2 of the "Sinful, Montana" series and I loved it!
This one is a slow, sweet burn, with equal parts sexy & adorable thrown in! I fell in love with the family created here, and I won't say who that is because I wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone.
With each new book Rosalind writes, I fall more and more in love with the characters. This is no exception. I thought my heart couldn't expand any farther for Lily & Paige, but this book proved that to be untrue. Their bond is so unique and moving.
And Rafe...well, let me just SWOON so much I fall off my chair. Because wow. Woweee wow. That is one hunk of man!
This book showcases a love so sweet, tender, and sexy that I can't wait to reread it over and over again. Definitely give this one a read, it was fantastic!!!
Book two of the series & it's the best. So many funny or sweet lines, great characters (I really want to see Hunter have his own book, & Hayley in a novella at least) but most of all the theme of sticking up for yourself, learning from past lessons & just doing the right thing resonates with me. One I will happily re-read, as its romance with a good heart.
Loved book one and book two is super good also. I listened on audible. It is a contemporary romance / romantic suspense and loved the narration and the characters. Plot revolves around twin sister of woman in book 1. The hero is hot! The banter and suspense make for a interesting and intriguing plot. Great series!
Reread: 4.5*'s Rafe is the brother of Jace from book 1 and he takes no time in getting in deep shit with his future sister-in-law Lily. Jace is a famous actor and mistakes Lily for his brother's partner Paige (they are identical twins). He lies about who he is when he meets her in a bar then later tries to buy her off (thinking she is Paige) to break up his brother's relationship as he thinks she's a golddigger. Lily who is the soft hearted twin had terrible marriage to famous actor whom she left a few years ago. Jace Blackstone brother of hero in book 1 is staying in Sinful preparing for a movie role in a western and learning to ride horses. He and Lily got off to a terrible start when the met in California. If there was award for FOOT IN MOUTH he'd win hands down.
Just love the characters and how they deal with their past and make a future. This book has the most charming little girl Bailey, that Lily falls for hard. Bailey has no parents and lives with her elderly grandma. She is on her own for the most part. She has a pretty scary past with her druggie mom who was in and out of prison (now dead) and the guys she shacked up with.
Adventure, romance, hollywood intrigue and a lost 8yr old in the backdrop of rugged Montana what's not to like?
Oh, the characters! Oh, the settings! Oh, the plot lines that intertwine! Oh, the fact that I get no sleep whatsoever whenever there is a new Rosalind James book to savor! Her latest masterpiece is the second in the Sinful, Montana series. Tempting is Sin is the story of two people who find themselves caught up in family drama: identical twins, brothers, job conflicts, and desire. Sinful, Montana is the epitome of a small town in a rural area. Having grown up in a similar small town, I certainly recognize the nature of the interactions among its citizens. One of Rosalind’s many strengths is her ability to describe the many individuals that one might encounter in similar circumstances. Her books are never ‘just’ a romance. There are plot twists, sideline characters that you want to know more about, adorable animals (in this case, pygmy goats, chickens, and a mutt named Chuck), and an intriguing story about two people who have suffered in the past, but just might find that they are made for one another. Throw in an orphan child, some Australian scenery, and a few life threatening dangers, and you have another great book.
Review written: June 1, 2018 Star Rating: ★★★½☆ Heat Rating: ☀☀☀☼☼
Lily and Paige couldn't be more different and their books reflect that difference. While Guilty as Sin was a mystery and full of action, Tempting as Sin is more of a drama. Lily's huge heart leads her to make some missteps, but also to open herself up to love in many forms.
There is a softness to this book that really sets it apart. James' signature writing style is on full display. I swear, I could read a book without knowing the author and know if she wrote it. There's a certain something that really gets to me every time.
Rafe is an intense and deeply sensitive character. He doesn't have much of an arc but that seems to be mostly because he's already where he needs to be. He does open up beautifully to Lily and Bailey. His hero worship of his brother Jace certainly leads him to do brave things, but a lot of that also comes from within himself. There is one major plot point surrounding Rafe that never seems to be fully resolved and just fades away and that is unfortunate because I would have preferred to see it fully resolved on page. Rafe's sensitivity sometimes seems too perfect and that makes him a little less believable at times, but he is a wonderful character.
Lily certainly has had a great deal of trouble prior to Tempting as Sin and some of that trouble comes back to revisit her. The beauty of Lily is her inner strength and how she manages to be both sweet and strong at the same time. Her heart is huge and she loves deeply and passionately, sometimes making things harder on herself because of it. Her need to help Bailey is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I liked how strong Lily is, but that her strength isn't in being bad-ass. Her strength is in her heart and her love, her loyalty and her tenderness. She's a girly girl who will fight for what is important. That's a huge statement to make.
Bailey is a simply wonderful addition to this book. Her smart-ass comments, her (often) wrong beliefs, and her emotional walls really make her a challenge. Both Rafe and Lily must overcome Bailey's fears to draw her in to their family. Her fears are quite rational and her walls quite sensible given her history. She's way too young now, but a book for Bailey in 10-15 years would be a treat.
The overall plot wasn't as tight as for Guilty as Sin, but the focus was so different that I suspect that played a huge role. This was all about Rafe, Lily, and Bailey becoming a family. There is some drama surrounding all that but there is little outside conflict and almost all the struggles are internal. Not one of the three considers themselves worthy.
I was a bit disappointed that Paige and Jace don't really seem to be that involved. In Guilty as Sin, Lily and Rafe both made significant contributions and part of the beauty was seeing how Paige and Lily interacted. This isn't just muted in Tempting as Sin, it was almost completely silenced, as if neither Lily nor Rafe could stand up to the awesomeness that is their siblings. And yet, both of them are strong characters with huge hearts.
Overall, I liked this book very much, but not as much as Paige's book. I loved seeing the little interaction between Paige and Lily and I loved the love in the book. Some of that was offset by a less than deft touch in certain matters, though. All in all, James is always a win and no matter what, I will come back to her books because I just keep liking them so much.
Just Come Over is the 12th book in Rosalind James’s Escape to New Zealand series and like the others it is completely stand alone. I loved this audiobook and would heartily recommend it, even if you weren’t particular looking for a romance book. James’s skills as a writer continue to get more and more nuanced with each book and there is a lot of heart in all of her books without ever being cheesy or too idealistic. James also avoids the trap of some series of writing the same book and characters in different ways. Each is unique and worth reading or listening to.
I loved the characters and chemistry in the book. Zora is an extremely likable and relatable character. I love that her career path has taken unexpected twists and she owns her own small business while being a single mother. Rhys is fantastic and I particularly enjoyed his dialogue throughout the audiobook. I like how he matured into the character we see in the audiobook, and that he didn't come out of the womb as a white knight. It was Casey however that says something that had me laughing so hard it turned into a cough, although I won’t put it in this review, because it will be better as a surprise for future readers. I really love how Isiah is allowed and celebrated to be who he is and enjoy his unique interests. For its sheer complexity (as it is with a lot of family dynamics) the character interactions I most found the most fascinating was Zora’s relationship with her mother. It was very easy to visualize these scenes. The only thing I’d have liked to see more of is more and deeper glimpses into Hayden’s non-Zora life. He seems like a great brother and uncle, interesting, and there are hints there is more to his story than we know.
My favorite thing about James’s books in general is that they show the bravery of women in situations that readers will be able to relate to. Everyday sorts of bravery too often get overlooked, much less celebrated and I appreciate more than I can say that this is a regular theme in her books. Zora faces a lot of challenges in this audiobook relating to marriage, divorce, parents, child-raising, love, small business owner, illness, financial, dating after a long absence, and sex. The balance of these challenges throughout the audiobook is expertly done.
Emma Wilder is a great narrator. She dramatizes the right amount, her pacing is great, and does great vocal acting for the different characters, genders, and ages. A listener can relax and enjoy this audiobook and catch every word's meaning. Its also a pleasant voice to hear.
Ms. James writes real people in real situations and she didn’t let us down in the second book in the Sinful series. While there is a glimpse of characters from the first book, Paige and Jace, this is the tale of Paige’s twin sister Lily and Jace’s brother Rafe.
I loved the story and characters, especially Bailey and Chuck. And I warn readers to have Kleenex handy for the last two chapters.
Even though I loved the book, I have two problems with the story line. The “meet cute” and later in the book a trip to Australia. Lily’s neighbor is Jace, she knows about his movie star brother Rafe. I highly doubt that colored contacts would conceal his identity through an entire evening. The next day Rafe reveals that he has known Paige’s story and seen her photo, yet he didn’t recognize her twin the night before? Didn’t add up for me.
Later in the story Lily has an addition added to her home. Other things going on in the story line make this a high-pressure time for her. So she decides to skip town and take a trip by herself to Australia. I have had several remodels in my home and know that something is always coming up requiring last minute decisions. Yet she decides to take a trip to another country. It just seemed a forced way to bring in Australia to the story. It didn’t seem natural to me.
About 75% of my reading is done when I can catch a moment here or there to read a couple of paragraphs or pages. I was so confused through the beginning of the book and had to do a re-read. I highly suggest not starting the book until you have time to read the first 6 chapters in one sitting.
Despite my two problem areas, the rest of the book is a joy to read and I highly recommend this book.
I was very interested to see where Rafe and Lily's story would go, and, as always, Rosalind took us on a great journey of faith, hope and love. The story is not only about the relationship between Rafe and Lily, but also of Bailey (and Chuck). I believe that Bailey is an integral part of this story. Lily is hesitant about finding love again after being betrayed by her ex-husband. I feel that when she met Bailey, it helped her realize that there is the potential to find love again. Now, Rafe and Lily didn't exactly start out on the right foot. Well, they did, but by pretending to be two totally different people. Once they met through Paige and Jace, they realized that they both had an attraction, but, aside from realizing that they were soon going to be in-laws and the fact that Rafe is a movie star and Lily wants nothing to do with that life again, they tried to stay away from one another. However, Rafe was going to be staying at Jace's house in Montana to learn how to be a "cowboy" for his next film. It was inevitable that he and Lily would bump into each other. But, what they didn't expect was that the more time they spent together, the more in tune they were and realized that they could possibly pursue a relationship. Rafe was also very welcoming to Bailey, which was another strong feature for him. Rafe is just an all around good guy. Through some tough times with all three of them, they all came out with the best end result - love! This was a bit of an emotional roller coaster, but ultimately, Lily finally realized just how strong she really is. She and Rafe had a great relationship - hot and sexy and sweet and sincere. Great combinations. Loved the characters. Loved the book. Loved the ending :)
Tempting as Sin is the second book in the Sinful Montana series by Rosalind James. The first book focused on Paige and Jace, while this second book focuses on their siblings Lily and Rafe. Rafe is an actor, and looking for a quiet place to prepare for his next role he goes to stay in Jace's cabin in Sinful Montana, neighbor to Lily. Rafe and Lily had an exceptional first meeting that completely falls apart at the second meeting, so Rafe has a repair job to do to make amends. Lily adopts a couple strays in an 8 year old named Bailey and her dog Chuck, and these two characters really make the story. Bailey is so well written and her childhood is such a sad and all-too-common tale, with Lily's reaction to the situation being just the best. Rosalind has a talent for creating strong male characters with unashamed vulnerabilities that makes them real and relatable. Her characters are well developed and have growth throughout so you can see where they've been, why they are who they are, and how they go farther than they ever imagined by having the right partner at their side. No damsels in distress, her female leads are used to taking care of themselves, but the right partner can come along for the ride and share in the responsibilities. Everyone will want a Rafe after reading this book, but I'm not sure they make them like him anymore.
I keep thinking the last Rosalind James book was her best one yet, but then a new one comes out and it is all so much better. I can't wait to read the next one!
(Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.)
This latest book by master romance writer and storyteller Rosalind James is perhaps one of my favorite stories she has written so far! A compelling, emotional story with plenty of everything I like: romance, great settings and plot twists, enough suspense to keep it interesting but nothing too bloody or scary for me all wrapped together in a plot that makes me want to keep reading and reading.
Rosalind's writing of this story is just right - she pulled me in right at the start with a completely unexpected re-introduction to Rafe, the hero of this story and brother of Jace from "Guilty as Sin" (the first book in the series.) I didn't expect to like Rafe all that much, but I completely fell in love with him in this story, and with Lily as well - also somewhat unexpected. Their initial meeting in a downtown San Francisco bar was fabulous, and things took off in every direction from there! Rosalind is a master at character development, putting the reader right inside the heads and hearts of her characters so we can experience the story along with them as if we were in it ourselves. The characters of Martin, Bailey and Chuck (and more!) added completely unexpected elements and fun, and of course Lily's "Sinful Desires" store is someplace I really wish I could visit!!! :-)
This is a perfect summer read, and one not to be missed by James' fans OR new romance readers. I think it would work almost as well as a "stand-alone" but for the full effect I'd recommend reading "Guilty as Sin" first. Pull up a beach chair and umbrella drink, and you're set for a wonderful time!
Almost lyrical writing at times, this book is rich with sentiment. On a shallow level, I probably shouldn’t like Lily - she owns a lingerie shop, her hair doesn’t go limp or frizzy in the heat, she has great legs for a little flippy skirt, add blond hair and brown eyes ...need I go on? She doesn’t wear heels though when she’s milking her goats, cleaning the chicken coop, hammering nails and working her precious piece of land. Two sides of a coin. Not the stronger twin, not a fighter you would think - but Lily is a giver, she has self doubts because , well, that’s for you to read .. Not that Rafe isn’t used to gorgeous women, normally they’re all over him. Certainly once they know who he is; that might explain his deep sense of suspicion.Although I’m not convinced that it’s just the fame factor with him, the man oozes charisma! Then throw the Aussie ‘can do’ factor ,work/earn ethic, protect your family into the mix. We gradually get to know Rafe and Lily and learn their individual secrets as the layers peel away, but it’s not all about them. There is vulnerable Bailey to be rescued and a goofy dog to win everyone over. There’s fun and laughter, trust to won and given, romance and hot loving (of course). Normally I’m sorry to finish a book but I have to say - what a glorious ending!
I am loving this series. Rafe and Lilly were perfect together. She was not as girly as I had assumed from the first book. She had a great personality and was very independent, despite what she may have believed of herself in the past, and has even built a successful business.
Rafe was definitely more than meets the eye. My initial impression of him was that he was cocky and felt himself better than others. I quickly noticed, however, that this was far from the truth. He was truly dedicated to making sure his brother was safe and happy. I think that this was a big part that Rafe and Lilly had in common--they were both protective over their siblings and wanted them to be happy.
I was afraid of what was going on in the press with Rafe and how it would affect his and Lilly's blooming relationship. Need not worry though...
&Bailey was just a great addition to their story. I don't think the book would be near as good without her in it; she does make up a large part of the book. Bailey was in horrible circumstances and so timid, but between Lilly and Rafe, they made a perfect little family that fit together perfectly and worked to heal each others wounds.
Alas, I am usually one that loves lots of raunchiness in the books I read/listen to. While this definitely had some steamy parts, the book was not just that. So much more.
Love, love Rosalind James books! Every single one grabs me and has me super invested in every character! Her New Zealand series will forever be one of my top series reads! Love those rugby guys and their ladies! Rosalind brings us more amazing characters in her Sinful series...characters I also loved. Rafe and Lily we met briefly in the first book, Guilty As Sin. Lily was married to a horrible movie star, she was abused terribly and is leery to meet new men, especially anyone in the business! Rafe happens to be an actor and is also the brother of the man who's engaged to Lily's twin sister! Rafe and Lily share an evening, sparks definitely fly! They have some serious chemistry! Once they discover who each other are, and they definitely didn't say who they really were, Lily feels betrayed...did Rafe really think her sister was a gold digger? What did her think of her? When Rafe arrived in Sinful for much needed relaxation, space and quiet to prep for his next film, he isn't worried about Lily being right next door. Can he resist Lily or will more sparks fly? Can he trust himself and Lily? Will their past define their future together? Loved this romantic, steamy book! Highly recommend this series and author! Five stars!
