"A dangerous disease requires a desperate remedy..."
Robert Catesby is a man in despair. His father is dead and his wife is burning in the fires of Hell - his punishment from God for marrying a Protestant. A new king presents a new hope but the persecution of Catholics in England continues unabated and Catesby can tolerate it no longer. King James bears responsibility but the whole government must be eradicated if anything is to really change. And Catesby has a plan.
The Gunpowder Treason is a fast-paced historical thriller. Every character is based on a real person and almost every scene is derived from eye-witness accounts. This is the story of the Gunpowder Plot, as told by the people who were there.
Enjoyable read for a wet December afternoon. A fictionalised recreation of the Gunpowder Treason, staying very much with the authorities' version of events, drawing on what documents are available. No clever twists emerge. The author depicts the brutality of the authorities towards Jesuit priests and the English Catholics in general. Yet there is not attempt to sanctify the 'Plotters either. I don't think avid 'Gunpowder Treason heads ' will find any new angle to the 'Plot from reading this but there's something quite endearing about the novel.
an interesting I to the eve t's and historical atmosphere th at led up to the Gunpowder Treason plot. All characters were real people and all of the story in this book was drawn from factual evidence.
Desperate men, in desperate times tried to put together what they saw as a desperate remedy! a very worthwhile read for a history buff! though this dangerous and inruncate scheme, which was doomed even as it began.
