John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, hoping to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency where he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John's assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting.

After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years.

John began writing Ranger's Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series.

He currently lives in a suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

In the last 6 months, we have read the 12 books in the Ranger's Apprentice series along with the 9 books in the Brotherband Series and one more book to finish in the Royal Ranger Series (6 books). That's a total of 27 books since September! We are hooked on these books! John Flanagan is an extraordinary author combining adventure, mystery with a bit of romance and lots of character-building qualities in his main characters. These are a series of books designed for young boys, but they have been a delight to us who are in our 8th decade! Thank you to John Flannagan for writing these books! And to our daughter for recommending them to us!

Love this series. Halt is so cool. :P But, honestly, it's awesome. Good plots, lots of action, great humor to lighten it up a bit, and, of course, great characters (ahem, Halt). In addition, the relationships between the characters is fantastic, I epsecially love Halt and Will's relationship and how it grows. The skills required (and mastered) by Rangers are really cool. I've always loved archery, that was part of what got me interested in the first place. I also just liked the general way the kingdom was run, the balence of power and all. It was neat to be able to see a bit of the other cultures apart from Araluen, too. Overall, books 1-10 were amazing Give them a try. You'll see.

I absolutely love this series!! I was in a bit of a reading slump when my brother let me borrow these books and I immediately became addicted to them! Although they are aimed at younger audiences (10+), they can definitely also be read by teenagers and adults - many love this series!
I love the time period they are set (Medival) and it was so cool to spot parallels between the fanatsy countries in the book to real life countries!
The characters are amazing!! I could never get bored reading about them! Their banter is hilarious and never fails to make me laugh! The development of some characters was so good, and at times, seeing how far they had come did make me cry!!
Halt and Horace in particular had some of the best character developments and are definitely some of my favourite fictional characters! Gilian and Will are also great characters and all 4 of them together are so funny.
I was never someone who would read books about battle strategies, fights and knights but these books made me get really interested in that!
The plot was very interesting - full of twists that made you not want to stop reading!
It is so cool to look back over the entire series and see how Will had come 'full circle ' and it was definitely bittersweet reading the last book (it made me sob!)
Overall I rated this book series 5 stars. Everytime I start reading these books it feels like I'm catching up with old friends, and I know I will definitely keep re-reading this series for a long time!

This is my number one all time favorite series!!! It is perfect in every aspect 😊it has lots of actions, plot twists, great humor, well developed relationship,love,friendship.... Well I can go on forever. Even though everyone give Harry Potter(don't get me wrong I love Harry Potter ,it's just I love these more, may be because I love fight scenes more) first place for me it will be Ranger's apprentice forever, 'Will' always gave me the lord of the rings-legolas vibes so l love it and will love it forever, read these 😇they are really good.

This series is our favorite read out loud books as a family. We love the characters, the interactions, the adventures, the growth. It is a good clean read with lots of great examples.

(I do edit out a few swear words when I read it out loud)

Some of my favorite books. Interesting but still enjoyable when I'm in the mood for something YA.

Really great series! Pretty good character development, though some book plots get repetitive.

I read all the books in middle school. I loved them then and still have a fondness, but I was very confused with timeline and world building, which seemed pretty inconsistent.
