C H Clepitt has a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of the West of England. As her Bachelor’s Degree was in Drama, and her Master’s Dissertation focused on little known 18th Century playwright Susannah Centlivre, Clepitt’s novels are extremely dialogue driven, and it has often been observed that they would translate well to the screen.

Since graduating in 2007, she gained experience in community and music journalism, before establishing satirical news website, Newsnibbles in 2010. In 2011 she published her book, A Reason to Stay, which follows the adventures of disillusioned retail manager, Stephen, as he is thrust into village life and the world of AmDram. Clepitt’s feminist fantasy, The Book of Abisan not only crosses worlds, but confuses genres, and has been described as a crime drama with magic. She has often said that she doesn’t like the way that choosing a genre forces you to put your book into a specific little box, and instead she prefers to distort the readers’ expectations and keep them guessing. Her 2016 work, I Wore Heels to the Apocalypse does just that, as just like the characters, the readers won’t know what’s going on in this laugh out loud satirical scifi.

Recap: Homeless Emma loses her boyfriend to drugs and gains an unusual, long-lost family member who helps her wipe out the cartel responsible.

Review: I enjoyed reading this short story because of the strong characters and the level of intrigue - you know enough to understand what's going on but there are various hints and suggestions that there is so much more to learn. The violence and injuries are believable and the standard vampire tropes are challenged which in itself is fresh and interesting.

Looking forward to finding out more!

CH Clepitt has a knack of making you want to read more.
Lineage - subtitled A Beginning - does just that. This is a tale of vampires and vagrants, in which a down-on-her-luck girl who makes bad choices in boyfriends ends up caught between gang bosses and something a whole lot more dangerous - and the key to her survival lies in, fittingly enough, her blood.
For Emma, the lead character, has an ancestry - a lineage - that marks her out as more special than she believes herself to be.
It's a touching tale - full of neat little touches, such as the explanation for why vampires don't go out in daylight being that natural sunlight shows them as they would look at their true age.
The end - without offering spoilers - gives a launch point from which I want to know more, and look forward to finding out where this tale will go next.
It's only a short story - probably about 5,000 words or so - but great for a quick read for the bus or train.

Intriguing!

Down on her luck and facing more complications than a young woman needs, Emma bursts into the reader's consciousness and quickly establishes herself as a likeable and loyal character. Having lived on her wits for some time, Emma takes the challenges she faces in her stride, although not terribly wisely.

Gudytha brings a new dimension to Emma's life, and the events which bond them raise questions that intrigue the reader and make them want to know far more than what is told in this short story. The humour is dark yet vivid, which really appealed to me as a reader.

Not only do I enjoy this writer's style immensely, I definitely want to read on and know more of this story. I plan to read the next short in this series very soon.

3.75 It’s less of a short story and more the start of a novel, which I enjoyed and wanted to keep reading. Nice world building, frustrated it ended so soon.

Brilliant start to a series

This book could have a sub heading of when Emma met the vampires as that about sums the book up. It is a brilliant start to a series which follows a young girl called Emma and her many times removed great grandmother, who is a vampire . This is an introduction where we find out teasers about the main characters and just learn about their future. I can't wait to read the next one in the series
