Smith Brothers #1

Mountain Man

Rate this book
Hank Smith saved my life, carrying me through a blizzard to his mountain cabin. He doesn’t like strangers, and he doesn’t like leaving his sanctuary. Now I’m trapped here with him until the snow melts.

I see him looking at me. He tries to hide behind a gruff exterior, but I see the longing and the heat burning in his eyes. I know he wants me, and I can’t resist him. I want to feel those big, rough hands all over my body.

But once he’s unleashed his raw, barely tried desire on me, will I be able to leave my mountain man behind, or will he make me his?

Warning: The Smith Brothers are not just identical twins, they’re big, burly, bearded, insanely hot mountain men. They’re also sweet, and very, very dirty. Did I mention dirty?

Mountain Man is book one in the brand new series, The Smith Brothers by Sherilee Gray. What happens when one of your very favorite authors decides to write a series about a pair of hot mountain men? Maybe time stood still? Maybe the world stopped spinning? Maybe fireworks spontaneously erupted into the sky? Well, maybe none of those things happened but one thing for sure, I was a very happy girl!

Birdie Winters never really knew a real home growing up. Her mother claimed she had a wandering soul. They never stayed in one place long. Now Birdie’s mother was gone and it was just her. She’d been in Eaglewood for several months now working at the library. She hadn’t made many friends and thought it would be a way to try to meet new people by going on a mountain hike. The weather was supposed to be clear. Somehow she got separated from her group and she fell and sprained her ankle. She could hear them looking for her but they couldn’t find her. She was convinced she was going to die on this mountain.

Hank Smith has always lived on the mountain with his grandfather and brother. He was up at the hunting cabin when he saw her. By the time he got to her, she was unconscious. So he carried her back to his cabin. If he had been just a few minutes later, it would have been too late.

When Birdie awoke with a naked man holding her, she couldn’t help but to scream. He was the biggest man she had ever seen. But she soon realized that he was also kind and caring, if not a little gruff. He was obviously uncomfortable with her there but the storm was a bad one and they were stuck in the cabin until there was a safe way down the mountain.

“He was big and fierce and untamed, but there was a vulnerability under all of it that had my belly in knots, that made me want to know more about him.”

Hank had only ever been with a woman once so he was completely out of his element with this beautiful woman. And beautiful she was. He was ashamed of himself at the thoughts he was having about her. His body was reacting like a teenage boy. A woman like her would never be attracted to a man like him.

“Hank Smith was like nothing, no one, I’d ever seen before. Just looking at him made my belly feel funny and sent inappropriate thoughts shooting through my head.”

Let me just stop here because you can probably figure out what happened next. Two people stuck in a mountain cabin, both extremely attracted to each other. Watching Hank gain confidence was a beautiful thing. But Birdie knows he is accustomed to being alone, that he prefers it that way. And she never stays in one place long. In fact, it’s probably time she move on again. Although she can’t help but feel more content, more at home with this huge man than she has ever felt before.

I loved this short story. It was so sweet and oh so sexy. I couldn’t help but to love this guy. What’s even better you ask? Hank has a twin brother, Beau! I can’t wait for his story in the next book in the series, Wild Man.

“I’ve never had a home, not a real one. And being with you, Hank, you are home. You’re what I’ve been searching for my whole life.”

This is a quick one that’s steamy with a sweet heroine and alpha hero. It only took me an hour or so to read, but it was a fun hour. I liked it a lot and I’ll definitely continue on with this series! I’m curious about Hank’s twin brother, Beau.

This one was OK. Didn't buy into the whole "walking sex god mountain man who has only had one lousy sex experience" thing. I swear what is up with books lately. The hero is either a walking STD or a ridiculous (almost) virgin. Also, maybe I missed it, but what the fuck does this guy do for a living? Does he not have a job? Does his entire life consist of just "living on the mountain"??

And yes I know I am being uber picky, but whatevs. At least the sex scenes were somewhat hot. *lol*

4 - "I knew you'd keep me safe..." Stars!

Sherilee Gray begins her new Smith Brothers duology with Hank Smith’s story, a loner, who lives in solitude on a mountain, his brother Beau, generally his only source of company.

Sherilee is becoming a firm favorite of mine when it comes to her Heroes, always strong, brooding larger-than-life in attributes, but generally all growly and alpha in personality. Doesn’t hurt that behind the gruff exterior they are usually absolute pussy cats for the women they fall for, and Hank epitomized that for me perfectly.

"You’re stuck here… I’d say for a while."

I like that she spun the norm on its head a little with this one in that Birdie is the one that is sexually experienced, so being stuck with Hank in his cabin through a snow storm, puts all-sorts of opportunities in their paths. The close proximity does absolutely nothing to quell their budding attraction to each other, and it doesn’t take long for them to take things to the next level.

I’d have to go back to life without her… I’d have to go back to settling for fantasies.

But can their attraction be more than just a few stolen days in a remote cabin together, neither of them are confident in discussing the ‘after’, when the weather clears and Birdie can travel back down the mountain to her life in town…

Like wasn’t a strong enough word for what I felt…

Mountain Man is a does what it says on the tin kind of read. Sexy, sweet and really enjoyable. I honestly don’t think this author can write a bad Hero, but then she generally taps into each and every one of my favorite attributes when she writes her men, so it’s hard not to love the outcome. Beau Smith is up in a couple of weeks, and I am looking forward to seeing what exactly puts the Wild into Wild Man when it releases.

ARC generously provided by the author, and it was my pleasure to provide the above honest review in exchange.

"There's only one bed left" will have me one-click books until the end of times. I SAID WHAT I SAID.
I one hundred percent grabbed this book based on the plot alone.

THE PLOT :

What you ultimately need to know about Mountain Man though :

Alright, alright, in words if you will, Mountain Man was a sweet, short, light and sexy read featuring the age old "rescued by the mountain man in a snowed in cabin" trope and it worked wonders. Add in the fact that our gruff and recluse hero is inexperienced in the bedroom and that his protégée is eager to tutor him and you get the perfect feel good package!
It was cute, flirty, steamy as hell and I loved the dichotomy between the hero's character traits : physically strong but emotionally vulnerable.

I enjoyed this sexy novella so much I one-clicked book 2, knowing I needed to read about the hero twin's brother right after finishing this one. (I liked his brother's book just as much if not even better! -> Wild Man)

This is how you do a novella!

Hank rescues Birdie when she’s lost in the mountains. He takes her back to his hunting cabin and then while a blizzard isolates them from the world, he falls in love. Insecure about his lack of experience, bruised from the pain of rejection when he was younger, he knows he’s not what Birdie could ever want. And even if she wants him, she’s a traveler, always on the move. Life on the mountain would never be enough for her.

Birdie has never known what having a home was like. Raised with a mother constantly moving from one location to another, it’s all that she’s known and so she continues to live the same life. When she meets Hank she begins to wonder what staying in one place would be like. Unfortunately, Hank prefers his reclusive lifestyle so Birdie takes what he is offering now despite the conflicting emotions rolling through her.

I absolutely loved both of these characters. Birdie was so sweet and caring. She didn’t even know what she had been missing in her life until she spent all those days on the mountain. Hank is a big burly growly mountain man who checks all my boxes when it comes to my perfect hero. It’s as though Ms. Gray looked inside my greatest desire and created the perfect character. With his grumbly ways and uncertain actions and reactions, I swooned in just about every scene.

Fast paced and well written with lots of heat and even the feels so often lacking in a novella, I will be putting this one on my re-read shelf. Along with my other Sherilee Gray books. And the icing on the chocolate cake is Hank’s brother Beau will be getting his story as well!

Just the right mix of sex and story. I love the old stranded in a snowstorm with a hunky recluse storyline...and a recluse who happens to be inexperienced and needs a tutor? Yum.

Sweet n sexy romance about a gentle giant kind of H and BBW shy h. The setting and atmosphere was lovely. The h was shy but also not hesitant about wanting the H.

The H though, he seemed to be chock-full of baggage - Mommy issues, from the time he lost his Vcard, overshadowing elder sibling and so on. No wonder he seemed so awkward and easily hurt. I guess my taste runs to H's a teeny bit more socially ept.

A GoodReads friend of mine wrote an awesome review for Solitary Man that had me running off to Kindle to grab it. But when I saw it was the third in the series and the first one was free I figured I may as well start there.

Mountain Man felt a little like an Alexa Riley novel. It had the insta love I enjoy, along with a little bit of drama that's not really drama. And a growling, sweet hero who's been basically solitary forever.

Both characters were cute and easy to like. There wasn't any real drama and it was only a short read. The only thing I can say is make sure you don't read it in public because there's a lot of really hot sex scenes. Other than that dive in now.

This book was exactly as expected. It was Short, hot, sexy and kinda stupid :D the almost virgin hero was a really nice change to the manwhore that seem to take over romances. It was pretty unbelievable the way his inexperience was described, but oh well ... I definitely love the grumpy and don‘t talk much guys the most, because it is way more sweeter when they finally do with the woman they choose.
The h was absolutely bland and rather useless.

The „drama“ and how they held back was way too forced for me and tried to put a depth in a story, that is way too short to be able to develop it.

All in all a nice and quick read, I will soon forget, but entertained me for a few moments.

Sigh. Sherilee Gray never disappoints. Ever.

I received the ARC of Mountain Man at 12 midnight, and didn't turn off my Kindle until two hours later. I HAD to start it, and forced myself to put it down. But as soon as I could pick it up the following day, I did and finished it. This novella had so much heart, emotion, story and heat packed into it, that I couldn't NOT put it down until I read to the last page.

The story opens with Birdie hurt and alone in the freezing mountains during a snowstorm. Hank Smith appears out of the winter wildness and rescues her, carrying her to his isolated cabin high in the mountains. Hank and his brother Beau have lived in the Colorado mountains all their lives, while Birdie is new to the small town of Eaglewood. Her attempt to be more social ended up in her with a sprained ankle, close to hyperthermia and stranded in a cabin with a big, brooding, mysterious, and sexy man. Hank is a recluse, preferring the beautiful isolation of his ranch and the company of his twin brother now that their grandfather, who raised them, has passed. But he is instantly drawn to the curvaceous librarian, even as his fierce, almost visceral reaction, frightens him. Hank isn't sexually experienced--he's only been with a woman once, and it wasn't positive. But with Birdie, his need for her overpowers that fear. And he wants her. Wow, does he want her. And this quiet, waters-run-deep, protective and beautiful man calls to Birdie. For a woman who doesn't make attachments easily due to a transient life with her mother, she still finds herself wanting to be with this man. She desires to be his tutor, his safe place. Which is terrifying for her, because she doesn't believe she's made to stay in one place. And with a mother who abandoned him and his brother at a young age, leaving their father a broken man, Hank is terrified of asking her to stay only to eventually--inevitably--watch her walk away when she can't endure the loneliness and isolation of the mountains that are his home.

This story is just beautiful. It's passionate, emotional, sweet and romantic. The way Sherilee Gray handles Hanks inexperience and Birdie's patience and sensuality with him was believable and wonderful to read. For a short book, there was so much inside it, and I wanted more. Fortunately, Beau's book is still up. And I can't wait to read it! Awesome book!

I really enjoyed Sherilee Gray's 'Breaking Him' and this foray into erotica continues with 'Mountain Man' with a solitary, gruff and somewhat emotionally vulnerable hero who saves a woman and then doesn't quite know what to do with the both of them.

It's a straight up-and-out sort of read and very easy to go through within a hour or so, not to mention the scorching hot times between the sheets that made the short anticipation worth it. Hank Smith definitely made the book for me; I wished that Birdie - whose odd name really reminded me of an old woman's - had a bit more courage for go after what (and who) she wanted instead of taking off in a way she'd known all her life. I felt more for the former than the latter, but was still gratified with the happy end that I thought Hank really deserved.

I loved this sizzling hot story!

A big, bearded, sexy AF mountain man who doesn’t like people, who’d rather be alone.

A beautiful, curvy, traveling soul who never stays in one place very long.

She gets injured, and stranded on a snowy mountain during a hike, he rescues her and takes her back to his cabin. (I’m kind of a sucker for the damsel in distress, stranded in the snow, rescued and taken to a cabin story.)

I felt their chemistry, I craved their passion, I was rooting hard for them. I loved these two together.

Hank was growly, gruff, a man of few words. But my goodness, beautiful Birdie made him want. She was the face of his fantasy girl.

This author made me feel everything in this sexy sexy novella. I didn’t want to put this down until I finished. I am amazed at how quickly I fell for Hank. I fell HARD! Even though this a shorter story, I felt I knew him, and cared for him, and wanted him to be happy and loved. And I loved, loved, loved his deliciously filthy mouth.

This was my first book by this author and I can’t wait to read more!!

Hank has a twin brother, Beau, and his story is next! Yes, please.

Pretty good little morsel. Enuf character dev despite the length. Plenty of nice hot sex. Celibate hero, what else do I need. The strong, silent sort, my fave. Manly man.

Not sure I’d read the twin bro’s book tho. Beau sounds like a manwhore, and I hate those!

Hot mountain man who is a near-virgin and completely celibate for years? Sign me up for some loving!! I loved the how the Hero is described (super manly man!!) And he is definitely a Hero! He saves the heroine from dying in the cold and he tried so hard to be a gentleman even when the heroine is his fantasy woman. They are stuck in the hunting cabin for a week coz of the heroine’s sprained ankle and heavy blizzard. The tension between them is smoldering. The smexy times is so hot and I liked how hesitant and sensitive he was as he didn’t have a lot of experience with any woman.

Sure this is insta-love but when you find the one, you’re never gonna let go! :) I loved the epilogue too, so satisfying.

Definitely a winner from Sherilee Gray!

The good:
I liked that Hank wasn’t the stereotypical romance hero. He was pretty inexperienced as far as the ladies went, but he was gone for Birdie basically from the get go.

The bad:
This is a novella, so you’ve basically got instalust immediately. Also, Hank’s one prior experience in the lady department was described with more detail than I really wanted.

3.5 RATING - A sweet and sexy novella featuring a shy mountain man and the damsel he rescues. A short guilty pleasure read not to be taken too serious. Similar to "A Real Man" story from Jenika Snow but more polished or an Alexa Riley book but with better writing. I do plan to read the next book in the series when it releases.

Novella with huge H, isolated socially and physically. He saves the h from a blizzard, falls hard for her. She's very attracted to him, but is unsure of what she can offer this independent man. I didn't like their dithering but once they decided to get together, it was a sweet steamy read.

There was a lot to like about this novella... there was 'trapped in a snowstorm', there was a man with a beard and a chest like a wall, there was wood chopping (I was stacking wood today so it was kinda topical too!).

On the downside there wasn't a big emotional connection between characters and there was an excessive amount of orgasmic screaming.

Having said that. I'll be reading more by this author for sure.

2.5/5

I don’t know if it was just me being asexual that had me rolling my eyes a lot or if this is just that cringey. Sex does not equal love, not at all. Apparently Hank and Birdie didn’t get the memo. They have sex for a week and decide they are madly in love and can’t live without one another.

*cue the eye rolling*

That’s basically the only thing I didn’t like about this book... and the dialogue got worse towards the end.

I loved a curvy lady being the most sexiest woman a man could imagine. I loved that he worshipped her body. I love that he loved her belly! As a curvy person myself, my biggest insecurity is my stomach. To finally have a book that mentions the belly and calls it beautiful is a HUGE DEAL.

I liked Hank and his innocence. It was refreshing to have the guy be the inexperienced one for once. I swear, in real life, you’re more likely to come across an inexperienced man than a sex god.

The sex scenes weren’t bad, at all, but they weren’t perfect either.

I still couldn’t connect with the characters. Something about them felt flat, inconsistent, and underdeveloped.

By far not the worst smut I’ve read but also not the best... by a long shot.
